  • This is a newer Tidewater Teddy version of my old documentary about the American black bears (Ursus americanus) in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Dare County, North Carolina is a bastion for American black bears that is hidden in plain sight. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge hosts one of the largest concentrations of black bears on the U.S. east coast. In this video, I’ll go looking for these bears on an American safari.

Siyo! I was motoring my 1968 Bristol 27' Sailboat through the alligator river. I was not aware of the bear presence there. I had anchored on the river and used my dinghy to get to shore and harvest some river cane. I walked a few feet ready to harvest my prized cane when I heard a loud warning growl. It looked up and less than 10' away in the thick of the can patch was a monstrous Male black bear. I sang to him and slowly backed away. I eased down into my dinghy and quickly rowed back to my vessel. The beat could have ripped me to shreds or even gave chase to me and easily overtaken me in the shallow river. He was letting me know that this was his terrain and I was a guest in his home. I apologized for my trespass and thanked him for his courtesy call. Great video on a beautiful place! Sgi.

Whoa, man! That’s a crazy experience!! Yeah, you definitely gotta be careful around bears. I’m glad you respected the bear’s space! It’s also cool you sailed through Alligator River. I had a 30 foot 1969 Dufour Arpege sailboat, but I never took her outside the Chesapeake Bay. Thanks for sharing!!

Alligator Wildlife Refuge is a great place to watch a wide assortment of animals. Drive slowly, stop often, leave your windows down (when the bugs will let you) - Make sure to watch the canals for alligators and otters. In the winter months is a great place to watch migratory waterfowl.
