Is this the rustiest Jaguar in the world? Car & Classic - The Rescues

  • This time, on Car & Classic - The Rescues, your host Chris Pollitt teams up with Jonny Smith to invade a forgotten Somerset farm. Brimming with derelict classics, the guys happen upon a Jaguar MkIX that has been parked in the same spot for at least 43 years. Untouched for all that time, the once majestic Jag is now a wreck. However, it's a great basis for a fascinating explore, and there may just be some useful parts to salvage!
    If you can make use of the parts, email chris.pollitt@carandclassic.com
    Also, be sure to check out Jonny's ‪@TheLateBrakeShow‬ RUclips channel.

    The weather the Brits have to deal with is brutal. Here in California, if it happens to be raining, you just say, "Screw it!", and go the next day. The Brits just have to go and work in the rain, because it may be raining for a week or more.

    +1 Car & Classic - Excellent video but it's so tragic that once gorgeous Jaguar was simply left to rot. With almost nothing left but a rusted hulk this video sort of reminds me of watching the original Bob Ballard footage of the newly discovered Titanic way back in the mid-1980s.

    Love it!!! I live in Somerset and there is an abandoned quarry near where I live. Near the path there is the remains of a Mk 3 Cortina. All there is left is the transmission tunnel, some of the outriggers, the back axle and the front wishbones. Apparently it got there because some teenage tearaway in the seventies took it and drove it over the cliff. Apparently he still lives in the town and has grandchildren living locally.

    That is a Mk8. It will have a 3.4 litre engine, drum brakes and no power steering, unless it was swapped about decades ago. Mark 9s had discs, 3.8 engine and power steering as standard. Apart from badges, and different rear lights on late 9s, they look identical. Mark 7s had a split screen and different trim. Heartbreaking to see it like this, but those parts will help other projects.

    The blue kit car is a Nimbus Mini based effort... my mate has one in his back garden, albeit a rally cross one! Incidentally, if you want to see the biggest collection of mostly British classic cars (some almost complete, some stripped bare), you need to travel to Knaven, near Maud in Aberdeenshire... there are a hundred plus sitting rotting away! Many have been there for 50 years or so.

But it's worse, a lot worse. Great job harvesting the usable parts for other Jaguars, people are going to be very happy about that.

Alas though, sometimes discovering a "Dragula" can be costly.I acquired the wonderful 1952 XK-120 roadster you see in the photo from a man who discovered it long abandoned in a remote New Jersey wood. The gentleman invested many years and endured two divorces reassembling it.In truth he had endured so much that he was as glad to be rid of it as I was to acquire it.I am now a subscriber ! • @geobrower3069
      @geobrower3069 4 года назад +4

      Totally agree, same here in Canada, "Oh, I'm going to fix that up one day", I knew an old farmer (total of at least 60 American and UK vehicles around the place) who had a 1927 Whippet in an open front drive shed, had sat there for 40 years when I first saw it in 1990, it had sank down to the axles; also a 1948 TC3 sitting out in the open with it's back broken from rust-out. In 1991 I was able to buy his 57 Isetta, 4 wheel, UK built (the US Isettas were German built); it is running and licensed here in Ontario. He even had a BMW 600 (2 door Isetta) but wouldn't sell it as his grandson wanted it.
      In 1995 I was back at the farm to buy his badly rusted 1958 Moggy convertible (I started the rebuild in 2017) at the same time he showed me another I hadn't seen back in his woodlot, a 1955 Traveller, after cutting trees we shoveled and carried it in pieces into my trailer, very likely a doner car). At that time (95) we walked by the drive shed, it had collapsed under the snow load a couple of years previously; crushed under the roof was the Whippet, a 51 Ford F1 pick-up, a 60's Opel, a Ford Super Major and a 71 Cadillac).
      As the farmer was getting on in years I was back again in 2000, his grandson wouldn't let him sell anything as he said they were highly valuable and should be auctioned off. You can imagine the condition of all these cars and trucks sitting out in the Canadian winters for decades! Two years later he passed away and his remaining kid's called in a scrap dealer to clean out the cars so they could sell the farm. I was 150km away and didn't hear about it until too late.
      Used to be a lot of stuff like this on farms until the townships started making the farmers clean-up. What a waste. In the 70's and 80's you would even find old second world war aircraft tucked away on farms, they would've been there since the late 40's!

    I used to see a Mk VII-IX laid up behind a house in Nanakuli. There are a few of these big Jags around this island. I used to see a pre-cyclops Rover 75 in Waipahu keeping company with a few early '50s low-priced Americans. I last saw these things around 2012. I fancy I am the owner of a 1909 Kissell Kar, as I dug up the brass serial plate. It is the 871st one built from c1905. It was a 3cyl 40 hp. Kar or truck. I made a photocopy of it & sent it to the marque club. My hobby is antique bottle digging, and I enjoy the occasional automobile, a c1918 Buick hubcap, and a '39 Buick badge. I found the Buicks on Molokai, as well as large parts of a '57 Cadillac 75 limousine. An airport hack? These islands still have dry sides, and I live out here.
