Ponkan (Citrus poonensis)
Origin: Probably China, India or Taiwan
I remember when i was a kid back in taiwan, people would buy these giant tangerines as table decorations for the Chinese New Year. We never ate them because the taste was very sour and I am not sure if those were the same as this one in the film.
I burst out of laughter when I saw you holding up the giant citrus! I had Ponkan before, but not as huge! I like mandarin but not the tangerine/hybrid variety, because the segments are harder to separate and usually lots of seeds.
Animania freak that thing was a beast!
Ponkan in Brazil is incredibly sweet. Easy to peel, easy to eat. Best fruit
Good to know!
We call these "kan" or "kam" over here (depending on which dialect/language of Chinese you use) "kan" is more for Mandarin speakers. "kam" is either Hokkien or Cantonese I forgot.
From what variety of ponkan is this? I am a producer of ponkan in Brazil and I have never seen one of this size, I would like to know to get change of this variety.Thank you
caramba mas, nunca tinha visto ponkan desse tamanho, elas são gigantes. as que eu compravam normalmente tinham o tamanho de uma laranja comum.
Wow looks delicious, I've never seen such a huge ponkan.
Yay old school Jared
Dude, it's old school because it was uploaded 5 years ago.
Tangerine in Chinese sounds like the word for 'gold'
mystery solved, thank you!
Really? … Oh yeah i got that sound when i spoke Cantonese but not mandarin or Taiwanese though
Well....it didn't end up tasting like either dish-soap nor diesel. so you gotta call it a success based on that at least :) They sell a "Honey Tangerine" at the local grocery stores here, however, they have much thinner rind than that thing..it honestly looked more like a cross between an orange and pumelo (sp?) - (note, later looked this up, they are, in fact a Mandarin/Pumelo hybrid.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponkan ). ,, I wonder if something maybe was lost in translation (blurred distinction between varieties of sweet citrus?) I about fell out of my chair at the end from laughing at the near Buster Keaton-esque expression on your face as you realized you had NO way of turning off the camera and panic momentarily set in. Hopefully it doesn't end up edited out.. I needed the laughs this morning!
izonker Honey Tangerine at your store may just be a sweeter cultivar of tangerine and not a true ponkan. I'm not sure exactly how the hybridization of the fruits works to create a ponkan exactly. Oranges are also a natural hybrid of mandarins and pomelos, but are very different than ponkans. And true tangerines are a hybrid between a bitter orange and a mandarin, so it technically shouldn't be a tangerine at all, right? I'd love to ask a botanist about this some day.
I made this video explaining the cross pollination of some of the common citruses. But I'm sure its actually more complex: ruclips.net/video/GgZ6H5yvp-k/видео.html
I probably didn't explain myself clearly at all ( note to self, early morning RUclips comments, nearly as dangerous as early morning facebook commenting) I meant to say that the Honey tangerines found here are not the same (and I would trust your sourcing far more than Jimmy the local 17 year old wage slave working in the Produce section at SaveMart :P .. I am sure the difference is that the "Honey Tangerine" here has more to do with a marketing name than an actual cultivar name.
Good chance thats true. Haha, poor Jimmy doesn't know any better.
That looks delicious! Happy Chinese New Year
It may not have had chemicals, but it had audio altering magic.
I just had one of these yesterday and I think that they are legit the best citrus I have ever tasted.
I'd love to see the trees they come off of..
A honkin' ponkan
I had a honey tangerine from a Vietnamese market. It just kind of tasted like flavored water. It was pretty disappointing.
I'm not an expert but I think fruits get fertilizers but not growth hormones... I think those are reserved for animals... but I also imagine if you did ingest growth hormones that would be effective on fruit then they wouldn't have an effect on human growth. They might cause cancer but you wouldnt grow taller for example which is what growth hormones in cows cause via drinking their milk
Although plant hormones are obviously not the same as animal ones, we sure do use them. Those are present in plants anyway, but artificial application of them can promote the processes we need - growth of certain part - roots\leaves\flower buds or delay\provoke flowering\dormancy, increasy fertility etc.
limau jared ..limau :D
***** what about them?
Jared Rydelek in malaysia we call all citruses limau .. like the one with you now we just call it limau Ponkan :D
just like your previous clip Limau hantu the second name is the name of it.. :D
do you need to try the mandarin dekopon. ponka family fruit
I reviewed it in my orange comparison video
ruclips.net/video/ItlDWH0ovuw/видео.html&lc=Ugxnp6AIxrzYiZabZRl4AaABAg
I saw the video BUT THE TANGERINA DEKOPON DOES NOT LOOK AT NOTHING SO MUCH IN SIZE AS IN FLAVOR, IN THE USA THE CALL OF SUMO CITRUS IF I DO NOT BURY.
I do not speak English so I'm sorry for some mistake
HGH Tangerine
It's PGR. Plant growth regulator or plant growth hormones.
Nice hiss
Lol, it tickles me to see a western guy holding a tangerine saying e traditional auspicious Chinese quotes of wat tis fruit symbolize. If u hv a Chinese gal friend n u say these wishes to her parents they'll be vy pleased! Btw, hv u tried Lychees b4? They R my fav fruits! ^^
dreaminbunny I had a Chinese girlfriend once. I'm pretty sure her mother just thought I was a bum because I'm a professional entertainer. I don't think talking about tangerines would have helped. Haha. Lychees are great, I prefer Rambutans and Longans though. Here's my review of it: ruclips.net/video/6sY86nveaOY/видео.html
Im Chinese n 40. Ur an artist n a fruit loving one, it'll be so much fun to hv a son in law like u! I juz googled Weird Fruits n saw a pict of a yellow fruit wif soft thorns n green flesh. Wonder wat is called? Hv u tried it b4?
thanks :) That sounds like a horn mellon. They are pretty good, not too flavorful though
Jared Rydelek I'm interested to know what kind of entertainer you are!! And how come we've never seen clips of this lol??
I'm a contortionist and sideshow performer. It has nothing to do with fruit, so I don't bring it up. I do talk about it in this other travel series I have on this channel: ruclips.net/video/AredD74gEco/видео.html
Yo try blood orange abd it can be made into marmalade jam
Its a bit too common for its own video, but might do a comparison in the future with it.
Malaysia
Can you talk about your contortionist training in China again please
Ps nice hiss
Ponkan
The subtitle say it's a Pumpkin
Ponkan like fruos
You , with a cut on your hand , who'd of ever guessed THAT would happen, to the worst person to ever handle a knife? Hee hee 😜.
This audio is so cursed
Most of those decorative trees are naturally awful in taste. They are there more for looking nice.
