Part 3 of 6 - Recording bass guitar is the next step after you've laid down your drum performance (whether real drums, loops, or a virtual drummer).
Having the bass guitar super tight with the drums is the key to building a powerful song. And we do this by trying to match the bass performance as closely as we can to the drums - hence why I like to record bass so early in the process.
In today's video I share two simple tips for getting a great bass performance in your home studio and how to make sure you get the optimal signal when recording. Let's do this!
6:55 "Plus there's the psychological benefit of not stopping yourself or feeling bad that you screwed up, just play man!"
Great tips, which I really need to follow cuz everytime I screw up, I instantly stop. Thank you!
I love how he gives out important information for free while other people on youtube try and sell useless stuff so they get money. Good job mate!
Brilliant Ben!!! Spot On Sir!
wow, it's like people are trying to benefit from the hard work and effort they've put in to learn the in's and out's of the program... how shameful of them. people should just always offer the most useful and important information to everyone for free that way there is never any benefit to having put in the hard work to learn that information. fuckin moron
How about you go and work for free for a month? And then come back to us and tell us how it went?
@@JSBroadcast i doubt this is his actual job. he's just trying to help people.
I understand what he is doing though, because I wondered the same thing. He appeals to the beginner time and time again because a lot of people both young and middle aged like myself need to know/learn/reinforce that recording/mixing with budget gear is tangible and we just need to make good music with what we have and not be fussing over what we don't have.
Great Bass method of recording !!! I played Bass before I learned to play guitar, and your method of playing "through" and not stopping is exactly what I like to do. I also record about 3 bass tracks and then pick the best playing out of the three to make the final Bass track. Sometimes if I get tired in the middle of a song, I might stop and restart my bass playing, but "playing through" is great advice!
At first I was going to dispute the "less is more" bit, as I had assumed that you were just a guitar player trying to shove the bass to the background. After watching the video, I realize that you were really playing towards subtlety and you layer down a really smooth track.
I am loving this series. I'm using it primarily as a motivator. Thanks!
Yes, that bass line is totally going to get stuck in everybody's head!!!
This series is really useful, Graham.
Keep it comin'!
Your videos are so HELPFUL! Thanks Graham!
thank you so much! I'm just getting into home recording. and this is so helpful, I can't wait until the next video
Graham, your videos are incredibly helpful! It's quite weird how from watching this tutorials I've started to form my own idea of this song in my head...I'm sure the result will be amazing! Cheers dude!
Best tutorial on RUclips for sure.
I love how you use monster cables. They are amazing!
Really good for everyone. I'm enjoying you telling the story of the song and how it all comes together! Gracias Graham
Great video, Graham!!! On overdubbing, I would add that the engineer needs to document all of the settings on the mixer/software, preamp, instruments, microphone(s) used so if the artist does have to come back on a different day to finish up a take, the engineer can at least approximate a recreation of the tonality, depth, etc (the "sound") that was previously recorded. But it's always best to complete your tracking/overdubs for a song for each artist in one session if at all possible because of this, IMHO. Good scheduling really helps here.
Greetings from Brazil ! Nice series man ! Eager for the mixing/mastering episodes :)
Too Nice vids!!! I'm gonna have a concert in 1 month and I got to monitor 3 guitars and 4 midi keyboards in 1 pc with 2 audio interfaces at the same time 🙈🙈🙈
I have watched this series a few times in my first recording adventure it has made things so much better thank you. I actually purchased the scarlet 2i2 bundle and the pro tools first is a great way to in your words, "dip your toes into the water". Thank you for the great videos and all of the great information.
Hi there! I need to turn down my bass and than adjust my interface (Scarlett 2i2). Great content again!
Awesome, it's like the One Song One Month challenge which really pushed me and that song was awesome. I might begin a new one and finish with you at the same time.
Great job as always, really appreciate the valuable information you provide to your subscribers
Beginners,
5:49 - 6:10 the terminology is referred to as "Comping"-- as in, "Compiling multiple takes to create the best track."
You the man
So do you record new take on a new track or over the first or original track? Hopes this makes sense.
I’m about to record bass on project I’m working on. Any tips are appreciated.
@@apostolicway2604 I record separate tracks and then cut them up and consolidate them. What DAW do you use? Your approach may differ slightly- in FL Studio, it’s important to mute the recorded audio clips before recording another take of the same track, otherwise it combines the old and new clip. If you turn on Loopback recording, it’ll automatically mute previous track recordings each time it’s looped or stopped.
If you’d really like me to, I can make a video of my method to help you. :)

Currently using GarageBand but hope to upgrade to Logic soon.
I feel like you're a recording pastor
Love your videos! So detailed and helpful. Thankyou so much
"Just play, man, just play." -Graham, 2017.
you do so great on instructions1 i thank God for finding this channel
Love the jam face! Getting into it.
your lighting looks great dude
Makes me feel special every time Graham says, "I've got a free gift for you..."
would've been nice to see what you did "extra" to the drums (toms, etc.) between the last video and this one, specifically.
Awesome and super helpful information. Thank you so much for making these videos, you are truly a generous soul. Also you look very good in that color shirt!!
FINALLY!!! I have been looking for this answer since months ago and finally found you. Thanks, Graham! Can you recommend any other Audio interface to record Bass right into it? Thanks!!! Keep Rocking!
thanks a million man! youre a legend.
Brilliant series Graham, really useful. Cheers Sir!
Congrats on another awesome, instructive video! As always, you are an inspiration!
Thanks again Graham. I really want to know what do you you think about using Step Sequencers for drum loops, professionally.
I can tell he Loves what he is doing.
Does anybody know what bass he is using. If not, what’s an affordable, studio-quality bass that you would recommend. Thanks!
Great video! Can't wait to see the guitar tutorial.
Love all your channel's content, Graham! You continue to educate in such a great way. One thing I noticed in your mix for this song, is what I thought was maybe the ringing of an unplayed note, or ringing behind the nut of a string. I listened closer and found it was the tone of the snare. In part of the riff, I can hear it ring out, sounding almost like a bass string. Anyways, you're probably making this tune for demonstrative purposes, but just a friendly heads-up. Keep it up, wishing you all the best, and take care!😉👍
Well as always great video !
I just wanted to say that I didn't have enough time on my work break to watch the video in normal speed so i put it into 1.5 speed , and i got to say : this bass line is a bad ass when you play it double time or so , Graham you got to try it faster :)
Thanks to share these tips!!
hey graham I have trouble with recording my acoustic piano at home, is recording a piano gonna come in this series?
great vid btw
Hi Graham! I just downloaded your guide and I think it's great! I just bought my very first audio interface and your videos really helped me a lot. Loving the series so far. Would really love to learn how you would add post fx and what plugins you use for this song you created, to every instrument and vocal. You are awesome man! Have a great day everyone!
Thank you for your efforts . Very useful !
Thanks for the great content! I don’t play the bass, but I wonder if you can program the bass into a daw such as protools first?
Instead of buying a Bass Guitar, could I use a Guitar plugged into a Pitch Shifter Pedal set to drop an octave?
Would it work?
Will I have problems?
Are there other options?
I am just saying a Pitch Shifter on an electric guitar is cheaper than buying decent Bass Guitar.
How do you feel about adding slight compression to bass or vocal tracks on the way in to your interface?
Cheers I enjoyed this.
thank you man for doing this! 😀👌👌
If I don't own a bass or have the ability to bring in a bass player, can I record this instrument using a MIDI or other preprogrammed sound?
Good Stuff...Thanks!!
I wanna take classes with you bro.
Always good Graham .nice vid .:)
What a coincidence, i'm recording bass today haha
me too
thx u for the guide.
What kind bass guitar? Looks like short scale.
whats the setting that allows you to "punch in"?
Hey, what's the green 'i' you click before arming track??
Great vid
Jordan Elcheson it's for monitoring i think. so you can listen to the track while recording
That's it Karl Baraquiel. You can hear what's coming through that Pro Tools channel when recording or when playing the other tracks. If you have effects on the channel, you will hear it with the effects. For example, I use Amplitube for my electric guitar tracks. I have to hit that green I so I can hear the "amp" on that channel while I play. Otherwise I won't hear anything.
What kind of bass guitar is he using?
i i nsttalled pro tools first hoping to get a feel for for pro tools. using reaper currently but wanted to see what all the fuss was about. being industry standard an all i was quite shocked to find out you cant use easy drummer with it. wtf . HELLO AVID WHAT ARE YOU DOING gonna be a while before i thin k about making the switch
Yeah, Pro Tools First is definitely not the full Pro Tools software. It's a good starting point for those with nothing. I'm pretty sure you can get a 30 day free trial of the full Pro Tools software on Avid's site if you want to check it out.
Please remember to get pretty fresh strings on the bass..
helps! on guitar too!!
Hate to criticize, but the reason your scratch guitar track probably sounded out of tune to you is that the bass is a little out, and you're playing it a bit out. That's likely causing the dissonance, not the guitar track.
hey Graham question what effect plugging do you put on Baseline before mixing would love to know please and thanks
if you can make a video and send it to me I will gladly appreciate it
Cool video but i think i'm missing something, somebody know if the bass is connected direct to the interface or it pass first to the amplifier and then to the interface, hope somebody can answer me... greetings :D
Do you add compression to the bass to keep the level even when you record or after during mixing?
Anyone knows what model and brand of chair is he sitting on?? Kind of digging the colour.
3:43
He smiled while saying, "Follow the kick drum"
Feel sorry for basists
This is an honest question that I've wondered about you for a while, and I intend no insult or criticism.
Do you ever feel tired going over the rudiments of recording over and over?
I understand that you are attempting to appeal to the beginner, but what about the folks that have been following you forever and have grown?
Or, is the free RUclips stuff just a way to lure people in to purchasing your courses?
Great videos otherwise! Keep it up.
I've wondered the same thing. However I did buy his some of his Pro Tools tutorials a few years ago and its AMAZING material, definitely worth the money.
I feel his heart is just so for young people to start creating music it has to be one of his major motivations. Just my 2c.
He is running a business after all. I can imagine that if you're trying to make a living off of teaching music production, youtube ads alone won't suffice, and you can't build and sell online courses if you already give everything away. You can learn all of this stuff from books at a library and self-experimentation if you truly want to go the free / open-source way.
Providing the basics for free (compression, EQ, song-writing...) is a great way to get a taste of how he teaches this stuff. If he was to teach everything in a year and never go over similar concepts over time, we would forget about him as other people would produce content and maintain an active online presence. Visibility by providing value seems to be a necessity in today's market.
I'm much more inclined to buy something if I've had a sample first, and I can't accuse someone of being a sellout or a shill for trying to make a living in an evolving market. I wish I had the balls and motivation to put myself out there and do what he does!
That is a great perspective. One that I am willing to bet is correct. Makes perfect sense.
Just to add to these great comments, some people really enjoy teaching others, even if its the basics, and I feel Graham is one of these people so its not a chore for him.
I've been thinking about this some more and have to admit that your perspective is also correct. He makes money selling a dream. He's a blogger that understands marketing, who happened to go to an audio engineering school to cover the basics. I stumbled on GearSlutz "Can we all stop pretending that Graham Cochrane isn't selling something?" which was good food for thought.
Hey man! I’m watching this in 2019 n I was just wondering if the Radio Ready Guide is still up? And is Pro Tools First still free??? Seems too good to be true lol. Thanks!
AJ Lalonde if pro tools first isn’t free anymore or you don’t like it, then there is a great free DAW for windows called Cakewalk or there is a free browser DAW called Bandlab that works on windows and mac
U are so helpful 😭
HEY U THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!
Great!
using the same bass to record!
Did I make a mistake by starting out with a Tascam interface and Cubebase software? Should I change my interface and start using Pro Tools? I am guessing it would be better to make the change sooner rather than later if I really do need to change. Thanks!
James Johnson im exactly in your situation but i think cubase is very much similar to pro tools and tascam is a great audio interface
Asaf Hanoch thank you very much! I decided to stay with what I (still) have because I am happy with my setup and I get good results. I purchased an affordable recording bundle to get started and I have replaced mic stands, cables, and headphones, and I did upgrade Cubase but I still use it as well as the Tascam interface, and the M-Audio monitors. I decided it would be best to work on learning more and improving my skills. Thanks!
James Johnson good luck to you my friend! what model of tascam do you have? i have us 2×2
Asaf Hanoch I have the Tascam US-366 USB 2.0 Audio Interface. Not sure if that is the same as yours but it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs so it may be similar? Thanks!
James Johnson audio interface/DAW are very subjective, and don't really matter to what your music is. I've used Cubase for a couple years and I have no plans to change it, and the audio interface I have works well, as simple as it is.
Is this “bury it”?
Can someone speak to controlling the wide dynamic range of a bass guitar recorded DI? I'm having issues keeping the levels consistent between verse and chorus when things pick up a bit. Is the best method to utilize a compressor, limiter or by some other means? Thanks in advance!
It's a bit late, but a compressor is the best way to go. There are plenty of pedals specifically for bass compression or the easier and cheaper option is to compress in the DAW with a plugin.
I've noticed with DI bass that I get a lot of fret buzz and "quack." I've recorded my amp from the efx send to my audio interface (focusrite scarlett 18i8 2nd gen) and this takes care of quite a bit of the issue. It sounds pretty decent with a speaker IR, so I do not believe it is the instrument itself.
However, I would like to be able to record my bass directly into my audio interface to utilize guitar sims. Does anyone have any good ideas on removing the irritating sounds that come along with DI bass? I've tried to EQ them out and it doesn't seem to really do the trick.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Which fader controller is that?
That's an Avid Artist Mix
I want my music to sound nasty.
this dude talk about bassists like theyre special ed students or some shit 😂😂😂
They pretty much are...
so handsome
i don't have a bass guitar :'(
graham you have a mowhawk lol
What if you don't have a bass guitar
Crazy Chicken use midi
I'm so tired of that "less is more" mantra for bass. There are dozens and dozens of examples of highly successful bassists who completely ignore that. Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Flea, Robert DeLeo, Les Claypool, etc., etc.
If your busy part isn't working, it's not necessarily because it's too busy. It might be that it's just not a very good part.
I am a lead vocalist, but I am also a bass player. That total stereotypical bullshit about bass players following the drummer and getting lost into the background, with some minor deep tones... WHAT BULLSHIT!!! Anyone ever heard of Geddy Lee? A Bass guitar CAN be played as a lead instrument, if you have guts to do it and actually know how to play the damn thing!
