Thanks! The overhands will esp come in handy against my primary sparring partner these days, who is 6 foot 8(I think hes actually 6'9 or taller and is underselling his height a tad bit) and 260lbs all lean; I myself am 6'0 even and 194lbs. I have much more experience than he does, but he has been training for about a year and a half now maybe slightly longer, so that combined with his height/insane reach advantage(I didnt know just how ridiculous reach advantage could get till I began sparring this guy regularly lol). I may almost always "win"(though you dont "win" in sparring; I just land more, better shots and defend against almost all of his shots successfully, aka I hit and dont get hit often vs him and all the other guys...my coach is the one person in there who consistently beats me) but thats beside the point; I always like finding new ways to fight him. I rely on close range barrages of left and right hooks with jabs and crosses thrown when it will be useful to me; and I mix in leg kicks, and some rounds I focus entirely on landing home my leg kicks and evading and blocking everything he throws at me while hammering his legs and occasionally landing punches to his head and body(and roundhouses too occasionally, though less often of course). Those are my main strategy vs such a glaring height disadvantage, but at least its literally FORCED ME to develop my defense to a very high level; I block/deflect/cover up as my primary defense, like Cotto he too relies on his guard for his defense. And like Cotto, my guard is an active guard, my fists rarely drop below cheek level(which is my default position, offering excellent defense and also wound up arms to have fast powerful punches without having to wind up anything), my chin is always tucked, and hell even when Im punching one of my shoulders(and the opposite hand and arm and glove) are ALWAYS defending my face/head against a potential counter attack.
its cause I decided early on that I didnt want severe life ruining brain damage from doing something I love, and I love sparring so much its my favorite activity I do. I never wanna stop sparring, and never will stop either. I can last, because I rely on my defense and rarely get hit, and land on and walk down my opponents looking for chances to land punches kicks or knees on them. My shadow boxing/visualization training/bag work all helps me tremendously and I do all three, at the same time of course, 3 times a day(at least, often times MORE) I do 30 minute heavy duty training sessions with a pair of 16ounce gloves on that I use specifically for outside of the gym training(I spar with an identical, but different pair, of gloves so nothing is different when Im in class/sparring in muay thai, or else training outside of class; everyone ought to have one pair of gloves for class and one for outside-of-class, its extremely convenient).
