Bullshit, I have an AB limited license to work on deck, wsf offers $19 per hour which is laughably low for the industry. Why would I work on a ferry for poverty wages when I could work for any tug company in Puget sound for twice that without even trying. Wsf needs to actually pay licenced guys a fair wage to fix the crew shortage.

Well I know it starts out a little bit higher pay than 19 bucks but not much. What is it 21 or so an hour? The schedule sucks and it feels on purpose. You'll be on call with no guarantee of 40 hours a week for the first year or two. If you want a weekend off you have to work 10 days in a row. The hours are terrible. . The boats are archaic due to underfunding. You'll be routinely exposed to drug and psychotic problems from the passengers. Wading through constant bureaucratic red tape from the Coast guard. Zero support from WSF administrative staff.

I owned a company that did work exclusively for airports. We had a fantastic reputation and 90% of our customers came to us. As usual, out of the blue one day we got an RFP for a project at the airport in Seattle.
RFP's are fairly standard with 95% of the typically 200 pages being boiler plate gibberish.
What stood out with the RFP from Seattle was that there was an additional nearly 100 pages that had nothing to do with anything other than dictating what type of employees we had to hire and how we had to treat them.
It required us to hire x number of ex-convicts. So many people with felony records. So many people without high school diplomas So many people taken from welfare rolls. So many people with physical and mental impairments. Not only did it dictate who we were supposed to hire but what type of benefits they were supposed to have and how much we were supposed to pay them.
The kicker in all of this was that no matter how many or what kind of problems they caused, there was no abatement to the contract. We as the company were fully responsible for anything the people they required us to hire caused.
My response… I promptly put it in a shredder and sent it back to them with a one page response with bold font saying fuck you.

In the distant past the ferry system could get by with paying a little less than the rest of the maritime industry because the employees felt respected by management. They are now suffering the consequences of more recent years of a bloated management looking down their noses on their vessel employees and being adversarial whenever they could simply because they could. So now they can just deal with it, and it will take many years for them to begin to recover.

Vaccine mandate wasn't as big a problem as the fact that we're not paying people enough money that people want to come to work at WSF. You got to pay skilled workers to stay at workplace. There was a cut in funding about 20 years ago and now we're seeing the result. The vaccine mandate has very little to do with the problems we're seeing. How can you retain workers if they're not going to get 40 hours a week from the get-go and they're only starting at 21 or $23 an hour? in the Seattle area are you kidding me?
