    I regualarly see a pair of 480s that are rotting away on a driveway. The owner is keeping them because they are "worth loads". Not if they are allowed to rot

    • @Pekkett
      @Pekkett Год назад +1

      What? What do you mean “worth loads”? Where I live, these are dirt cheap, I mean they’re rare, but just so cheap. My dad had a 480 that just sat in our driveway for 15 years, he didn’t keep it because it was valuable, he just kept it because it had gotten to the point where it was impossible to move, he did eventually get rid of it. And now it’s been scrapped :(

    • @LordElpme
      @LordElpme Год назад

      @@Pekkett In good condition they will be worth a bit to the right person as so few are left in good condition. Most either got scraped during the days of Scrappage Scheme or have been left to rot on the driveway.

    loverly car, best 480 engine and colour combo. not sure if yours is auto or manual. had a 1988 non turbo which i liked. however they never had the full volvo feel i felt. went to 850's t5 and r's for the next 12 years, the onto p2 v70 as my daily drives. still have my 850's as i bonded more with them than the 480. yours is in great condition and can understand the money needed to keep these going. i had the window reg go on mine, new arches cut in and welded, rear lights leaking, water in the running lights blowing the bulbs. luckily my car was from a wealthy owned and had been to main dealer all its life, even for a single bulb change.

It will need some welding work done, a general tidy up and arches sorted at some point but it’s gonna be a running project. Reminds me of my old car, a late model 94 Turbo manual with AC. Must have been close on 200bhp with increased boost at 13psi (engine and gearbox was more than happy at this power for 2 years) and lowered on Eilbach springs. It had the standard electrical gremlins but wasn't essentially a bad car or unreliable. Untaxed since 2004 so probably long gone now. When I got it it was a car I'd wanted for quite sometime, turbo, popup lights it ticked all the boxes back then enjoyed my time with it good to see they are appreciated now more than when I owned mine as back then it was just a bit of a curious oddity.

    Still love the 480's looks (I'm from the Netherlands). My father considered a 480 when time came to retire his 460, for half a second. Of course, the 480 doesnt really suffice as a proper family car - He got an Audi 80 instead.

  • @peterwilliams8922
    @peterwilliams8922 2 года назад +2

    I loved my 480, but I have to be honest, it was a nightmare. It was a long time ago, but I believe it was a 2ltr volvo engined car, but still had the renault rubbish electrics. My first and probably biggest problem was the leak in the rear, I paid hundreds of pounds - after the warranty ran out, to try and fix it, but nothing ever worked. Even Volvo dealers didn't want to work on it. I once tried to part ex it for a 360 GLT, the same model as I part exed for it with a volvo dealer, and they wanted £2k plus the 480 - for a car 3 years newer! The electrics eventually made it totally unreliable for commuting and I lost about £4k in total with my trade in. I was a volvo guy until then. Never had one since.

    I owned a 1991 volvo 480 es 1.8 injection,limited edition in Paris Blue (green bumper inset strips),2 tone interior - turquoise and blue with what i can only describe as a cupcake sprinkes designed multicoloured carpet.LOL.........ive owned volvos all my life and consider the 480 the best ive had - the attention to detail was fantastic....it was gorgeous inside and out.................i had a Kenwood CD player installed and 6 disc changer instead of the radio/cassette however it only had approx 6 months use before i traded the car in (i removed cd player/disc changer.)...............i still have this as brand new complete with all cables needed to install (plug and play) if anyone wishes to purchase from me and install in their 480.....price is negotiable around £150 plus postage extra...get in touch if interested......would be perfect in this white 480 :)

    • @Edie_Fox
      @Edie_Fox  Год назад

      The Hausser kit? If any have survived, I believe they will be much loved and on a car. Outside of the UK. I’d say the only hope would be to have one manufactured. Probably at a cost of double a decent 480…. There was some recent talk of WR Composites making the spoilers but a lot of work required to make it fit. www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=36744&p=227564#p227564

    nice guide and video, but i live in the us and i love this car. the only problem with importing one is California smog laws. which of the 3 engine types would be the easiest to convert to work in california? or could you direct me to a source where i can find more information? thanks.

    • @Edie_Fox
      @Edie_Fox  3 года назад

      Hi. I just took a quick look at the CA laws…. They don’t make it easy, do they?! All the grey/import stuff etc.
      I wonder if this car would be ‘built for the US market’ compatible as it actually was…? ww2.arb.ca.gov/frequently-asked-questions?keywords=&page=3
      Perhaps the best place to ask would be the forum, link above. 🙂

    • @grahamthornton5669
      @grahamthornton5669 2 года назад +1

      I don't own a 480. I do live in the US - but WA not CA. The 1.7 is the Renault F3N engine which was also used in the U.S. spec Renault Alliance. So it *might* be possible to transplant the emissions gear from the Alliance to the Volvo. I would expect non-turbo improves the possibility it will fit, but it is far from certain. Later post 91 models have catalytic converters but idk if that is enough to keep CARB happy. Lastly you could register the vehicle in NV or SD, the latter allows you to register as a residence and will issue you plates and a DL.

    • @theshrugggd3313
      @theshrugggd3313 2 года назад

      @@grahamthornton5669 so i can register the car in nevada and i don’t have to worry about california smog laws eh? well i do actually like your idea of transplanting emissions gear from the alliance. there are 2 emissions tests that need to be carried out as far as i am concerned. when the car first gets imported it is tested for gross pollutants, but if you want to get it registered in california it needs to undergo a much stricter regimen. it might already pass the import tests as is, but it probably won’t pass california laws. thanks for the information.

    • @Edie_Fox
      @Edie_Fox  Год назад

      Hi
      I think you need to register here first then navigate to the forum: www.volvo-480-europe.org/index.php
      There are about 5 or 6 ‘R’ cars in the queue at the moment. They are done by 2-3 people outside of their own cars and full-time jobs so it depends if you’re in a hurry… Always ask for support and opinions on cars you see. Many members will happily pop along to see a car for you if it’s quite far from you.
      R9, a 2L Paris blue ES is likely to be next ready I think. The idea is for the members (who know the absolute best for the car) work on them to bring them up to scratch mechanically (lots of obsolete parts supplied from members’ own stock) MOT’d then they are sold on for a reasonable price for the buyer to complete any cosmetic work.
      R9 needs a clutch so that will be getting done when spring comes along.
      Update from DC on this post about it. www.volvo-480-europe.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36829
      I have seen R9 as it lived near me but had been garaged a while and once it’s sorted by the team and cleaned up, it’ll be a nice car ready to go.
      I cannot emphasise enough the checks and work that goes into these R cars. All of the known niggles you will get on a 480 are already checked/repaired/replaced and there is always back up support in future from people who know the car inside out.
