The most important thing I took from this interview; we built off what Ben(Wallace) was building. BigBen was the most important piece to the 04 Pistons.
Rasheed WAS NOT on that team yet! That lineup would’ve been Pg: Chauncey SG: Rip SF: Melo PF: Cliff Robinson C: Ben Wallace Not even winning the East with that lineup... P.S. I’m a Piston FAN from the Cradle to the Grave...Eastside Born & Raised Melo wasn’t the answer!
Tayshaun could've thrived in the type role that Iggy played for the Warriors as Melo matured into a starting role. They could've even went small at times
Red HawK13 Do I think he can’t play defense? In certain spots, sure. I’m a Knicks fan and saw him everyday play lackluster defense except when he played Bron, that is when he hustled in that end. I think he would’ve learned to play with more urgency in Detroit.
They had the chance to choose D.wade too! Pistons could of had a dynasty for sure. That's why the GM position is critical in any team's success as well.
Ronnie Alston Dwade turned out to be a monster but Billups was an icon in Detroit, I would have prefer to draft Melo, since scoring was their weakness, and they already invested too much money on Hamilton and billups
Ronnie Alston bro im not a wade hater but wade had shaq and bron who are top 5 all time. Having said that i think everyone knows they should have drafted melo.
@Red HawK13 Dude, he never said Melo was incapable of playing D/team ball. However, throughout Melo's career he's only ever been option 1 on offense and had never been asked to defer the scoring responsibilities to anyone else. George Karl was specifically an offensive minded coach, the Pistons won through Defense and teamwork. Stop, go watch some early 2000s basketball and then come back to argue your point.
Alex Fleming He didn’t single handily do it. Dikembe actually outplayed him in the Bucks series. Single handily is what LeBron did in 2018. A.I had a bunch of bad or mediocre games where they still won.
Idk man. I like rasheeds defense way better than melos and if melo played on the pistons, they most likely wouldnt have gotten rasheed at deadline that yr
Larry Brown is the reason the Pistons didn't win more than one chip.Great defensive coach, terrible offensive one.Dumars should've had more faith in Carlisle who was a really good coach at the time and I think they still would've won the chip that year and definitely more down the line bcuz he was good at teaching both offense and defense.Dumars was greedy for that gourmet chef for his best meal that year but could've been getting even better meals in years to come with his original chef
This is actually a great WHAT IF because the Pistons taking Carmelo Anthony #2 was a REAL possibility at the time, it isn't a 20/20 hindsight type of thing like the Blazers passing over Michael Jordan with the #2 pick or the Pistons passing Dwayne Wade(its wrong to bring up Wade becauseNOBODY thought Wade should go #2 in that draft!!) A lot of people questioned the Pistons taking Darko AT THE TIME!! Carmelo gets ripped a lot because of how bad his Knicks teams were, but he was a generational type of talent(people may forget that Melo was an all-star caliber player as a rookie) like Rip Hamilton said. The Pistons were already a dominant defensive team and one of the best teams in the East in 2002-2003, imagine how great they would have been with a versatile 20PPG scorer like Melo? They probably could have went on a run where they won 3 in a row and/or 5 titles in 7 years, and Melo's all-time ranking/greatness would be WAY higher than it ended up being. Some of you in the comments brought up a good point about Rasheed Wallace, the Pistons probably would have had the best record in 2003-2004 at the trade deadline if they drafted Carmelo Anthony, and may not have traded for R.Wallace, but they still would have been a championship team regardless. C.Anthony's great inside-outside scoring, rebounding and 3-point shooting would have made them elite. About Larry Brown, its true that he had the old-school mentality and didn't like rookies or young players, but he would have seen Carmelo's talent at the rookie summer league and then at training camp, and would have given him big minutes immediately as the starting forward next to Tayshawn Prince. He wasn't going to play the "Sit And Learn, Youngster" mind games with Carmelo because Carmelo was just too good for that.
They would’ve likely screwed the entire league over through atleast the 09-10 season. I mean when most NBA teams have their long run of being a powerhouse team, they only last 5-7 years but this could’ve been 8-9 years
@@Imadawg213 Agreed!! In 2003-2004 Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups were still in their late 20's, Tayshaun Prince was in his 2nd year, Ben Wallace was at his HOF peak and the Pistons were coming off a season(2002-2003) where they finished 50-32(looked it up!! lol), which was good enough for 1st in the East. The championship/dynasty potential of those 4 with Carmelo Anthony is off the charts!! Carmelo Anthony may have had a Magic Johnson or Kobe Bryant early career path because he would have won titles and most likely Finals MVP's in his first 5 seasons, and been in the discussion of Greatest Player of All Time, the way Kobe and Magic are/were.
@@seeehorn very true, realistically the 09-10 season would be their last shot at a title without Carmelo but with Carmelo, even in the 11-12 lockout season they could possibly gain another ring. The Pistons in 04 might be one of the best if not the best team of all time, the following 5-8 years they would prolly pick up atleast 1 more ring and 2 more appearances
No, not really. He's not even in the top 20 to never win a ring. His reputation was good until like 2015 - 17; when people expected that with Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah the Knicks would makes the playoffs. People used to think about him more positively even though he only got out of the first round twice. It's kind of like Russell Westbrook. During and after his MVP season everyone thought that he and Curry were near the same level. Now it seems crazy that we ever thought that. Westbrook has been very disappointing the last 2 postseasons, especially last year. I was actually shocked by how Westbrook played against the Portland. Like I might expect someone to shoot the ball poorly, or to choke in big games like James Harden has before, but I've never been shocked by James Harden playing bad. I was honestly shocked by how horrible Westbrook was in games 2, 3, and for most of game 5 last year vs Portland. 3 years ago he was considered a top 5 player. 2 years ago he was considered a top 10 player. Last year he was considered arguably top 10, but he was slipping. Now, is he even top 15? I don't think so - I don't care about anything regular season, even with his solid and improved midrange J that he has, and shooting over 50% for the last 2 months of the season. He had a 12 game stretch last year where shot 50% from the field. Yet it didn't mean shit when the playoffs rolled around. So, everything he's doing now doesn't mean anything if he can't replicate it in the playoffs. He's gotta shoot at least 45% or better in the playoffs. No excuses. Dame went from maybe top 10 to of course top 8 - 10 players, Westbrook went from maybe top 10 to maybe not even top 15. Idiots like Kendrick Perkins still think Westbrook's a top 10 player because of this regular season, when his stats are much better than the actual player that he is. Also the Rockets fast paced offense slightly inflates his stats.
Elijah Ruderman Lets be honest most of us didn’t think rose and nowh was enough, d rose mentally was damaged and injury prone, and he wasn’t the same guy after how the bulls did him you should watch the little documentary on that. Also, Noah wasn’t ever that good he was overhyped Boozer was the better player when they were in Chicago, Noah got to much attention. Also them not making the playoffs imo was unexpecting and even if they did it would’ve ended in the first round. Now as I do feel Melo might be in that top 20 of not winning a title hands down. Could Melo have had a championships if he made moves to other teams yea, i just fault Melo for overstaying his Welcome in New York just saying!
I wish, sadly he never cared about basketball....People act like Dumars was drunk when he drafter him, dude was one of the best built white big men ever.Tall, strong, great shot blocker and yet he wasn't so slow when moving, had good passing and his jumper wasn't so trash at all. There'a a story that he hit like 7-8 straight threes during draft training. Most people wanted him, sadly you can't teach effort, plus larry brown was kinda dick to rookies.
People always forget, melo was coming out of college and to be surrounded by those vets. They were built different. Melo wouldve been a huge boost to that squad
I don't like RIP when they defeated my Lakers in 04. But now I respect him and I actually wanted them to beat the spurs in 05. Those pistons were absolute Dogs
As a lifetime Pistons/Bad Boys fan... I been saying this since the 2K3 draft. Strong veteran leadership, hung our hat on Defense, LB as head coach (!) now add this young Bull that can score 30 in his sleep. Sh*t is actually sad being a Detroit fan~thinking abt "what coulda been"
Still f’n bitter about not drafting Melo. That Pistons team would have been so hard. Neither Bron nor DWade were close to stepping into a situation so perfect for them.
Melo was robbed of rookie of the year. No offense to LBJ but Melo took a team with a worst record and took them to a higher seed than Cleveland. If Melo goes to Detroit it would’ve been a wrap. If that Pistons team thought Melo how to win that 2013 Knicks team wins it all.
Joe Dumass decided to draft what's his name instead of THE top player in that college year. Like Rip said, Melo likely gets to the D, learns D, and gets at least 1 ring.
I was so disappointed when Detroit did not take Carmelo Anthony in the 2003 draft. It is like everyone saw what the best pick was except for Joe Dumars and the Pistons. Trying to look smart with the unknown Darko instead of the sure bet and clearly better player, NCAA National champion Melo. The Pistons would definitely do that different in hindsight and it became painfully obvious about a month into the 2003-2004 season how bad of a mistake they made in the draft.
If they (The Grizzlies Pick) had gotten the number one pick and drafted LeBron, that would've been like 8 straight championships - they would've never traded Chauncey. With Wade that's like 5 or 6 (Again they wouldn't have traded Chauncey in 2008 because they would've been a dynasty). With Carmelo that's 4 or 5 Chips. The Pistons made 6 straight conference finals from 2003 to 2008 anyway, and if hadn't traded Chauncey in 2008, and also had Carmelo or Wade, that would've continuing winning Chips. I'm basing these Championships off players sometimes being injured, or maybe Rasheed Wallace doesn't get traded there in 2004. Also Big Ben left in 2006, but if they 3 peat from 2004 - 2006, he might've taken less money to stay. Crazy what if.
They would have won more than their 1 and more than 2 that's for sure. And it would have developed Melo very well and that organization would have started building around him as the vets got older. Melo was close to winning one with less. Kobe and lakers stopped him in game 6 of WCF. And west was harder.
Draft spots in football and basketball mean so much. If a particular player is in wrong system or culture then it can entire story. Very few players can become superstars on just any roster with any coach.
They would have won in 04 still, maybe a sweep instead of the 5 game sweep. They would have won game 5 in SA the following year and closed out in game 6 at home. Nearly did it and lost in a close game 7. Melo puts them over the top. Wade, Shaq, Mourning, Haslem and Payton were great. That 06 year was close and a tough series, but Melo was a 30ppg player at that point added to what Detroit has already built as being the team to beat and a proven championship team. I think they could take it and they already had homecourt that series so even a game 7 would be in the D. Might win that one and that Dallas team would lose to Detroit with Melo or like they did with Shaq and Wade. Possible 3 rings there. 07 the Spurs swept Lebron. If Melo, already having 2 to 3 rings goes head to head with Bron and has that Pistons championship core and defensive prowess around him, I don't think Lebron dominates games 5 and 6 like he did. They at least win that series and get the rematch with Spurs in 07. Then Ben left in the offseason. I don't think Ben leaves if they've won 3 rings. Why not go for 4 in 5 years? 08 the "Big 3" Celtics were formed. They beat the Pistons in games 5 and 6 to go against Kobe who was all by himself. With Melo, at that point an MVP caliber player, multiple rings, perhaps a finals MVP, and Mr. Big Shot and all of these studs on one team with that long tenured chemistry... I think they win any home game in that series and even if they didn't have homecourt somehow, I bet clutch Chauncey, clutch Melo or late game shutdown clutch defense wins a road game. Instead of losing in 6 they may well win in 6 or 7 and I think the same result, a 6 game series win over Kobe with little help. Like what the Celtics did to them, lots of shutdown D and zero in on Kobe. Pistons did it with the 04 Lakers, they probably do it again and out of respect for Kobe I'd give him the 2 wins that he got over the Celtics would be the same. That's 4 rings at least. The 07 Spurs the year before is a toss up. In 09 I doubt you trade Billups; multiple rings, a finals MVP or 2, possibly 5 straight finals appearances, or at least 4 likely. You don't need Iverson as great as he was, when you have a generational talent in Melo and that same core still, maybe without Ben if he stepped away. They'd still have had Stuckey and other veterans because of how they finished the years like they actually did, so those picks would be the same. 09 Billups and Melo pushed Kobe and the Lakers in the WCF in an all time exciting series, and that would just be in the finals instead if that trade never happens and if Melo was drafted to Detroit instead of Denver. Kobe and Pau and co. won that series against Denver, and Kobe was on a tear so they very well could have won that year still. Wouldn't have been as easy as the Magic were for them though. Let's be real here, Dwight never got past Detroit in his life in the playoffs, he got past Lebron that 09 year. Chauncey and the Wallace's had his number. They wouldn't have been in the finals if Billups was still in Detroit. That finals would've been 7 games probably, like the WCF Denver series ended up being. People forget Chauncey and Melo led that Denver team by themselves. They could do it in Detroit with a way better cast for sure, they forget how much of a winner Billups was and the Pistons were, imagine if he never left. 2010 Sheed left and went to the finals with the Celtics. Melo was in the last year of his deal with Denver. That would be the deal with Detroit instead but same situation, although he'd be looking for more money now, maybe still goes to NY to try and win on his own and get paid. But idk if Sheed leaves if they'd have 4ish rings and 5-6 finals appearances. Can the Celtics get past a Pistons team with Billups, Rip, Melo, Prince, Sheed, Stuckey, Maxiell, McDyess, and possibly Big Ben? I don't think they do, for they barely got past Lebron by himself. Most of the Pistons were aging by 2010, but Billups was still an All-star, Melo was a scoring champion and was in his prime, Hamilton and Prince wouldn't have had as many minutes on their knees, some young guys would be in the rotation, and you'd still have that competitive champion defense regardless of age and some skills declining. They just might get to the Lakers again in 2010. I see this framework being a real possibility all because of one draft pick being different in Melo. So many dominoes don't fall then, or fall differently perhaps. A core of Billups Melo Rip Prince Sheed Big Ben Hunter McDyess That can run the league for 6-7 years like I drew out, it very well could go from fairytale thinking to a legitimate reality with that team. That's maybe 4-5 rings in 7 seasons.
This is likely how the records r gonna go: 03-04: 60-22 (win finals) 04-05: 54-28 (win finals) 05-06: 70-12 (lose ECF) 06-07: 68-14 (lose finals) 07-08: 55-27 (lose conference semis) 08-09: 59-23 (lose finals) 09-10: 64-18 (win finals) 10-11: 61-21 (lose conference semis) They would run the NBA and I believe the 11-12 season will be their last good season before rebuild
@@Imadawg213 You said you think they lose 05-06: 70-12 (lose ECF)? Wrong I think The Detroit Pistons in 05-06 with Carmelo Anthony beat The Miami in The (ECF) that year and go to play The Dallas Mavericks in The 2006 NBA and beat The Dallas Mavericks that Year.
@@user-td1me4tv3u Now that I see it we could’ve been the NBAs Chiefs in the mid 2000s and kept our powerhouse legacy through as far as somewhere between 2012-2015
Sheed bought in right away when he came to Detroit. I think Carmello would've done the same thing. By 2007 Cleveland was better and in 06 Miami had Wade, Shaq, and Mourning they were tough. Boston had the big 3 by 08. With Mello that could've given Detroit the edge over those teams. Detroit was was still making it to the Eastern conference finals 6 straight times. Tayshon would've been fine being the 6th man.
Tayshon made the block of the year... But the narrativ on Melo's carrear and status would have been different, even if he won only the one championship, He would have a real chance to be a real contender. The game of "what if" is very tricky.
the interesting thing, too, is that before Detroit won the title those players were respected but not revered. in retrospect we know they were championship-quality, but if Carmelo had been in there from the year of that first title then people might have seen Detroit as a team that couldn't have done it without him, and given him a lot of the credit even for the first championship
Pistons is my favorite team like rip to me is the first 3&D all-star but what he saying is facts Mello only an a team once with the nuggets an most of this players where old even AI if he came to the Pistons instead of what's his face the Pistons would one been scary good
Sounds good but there's also a chance that Larry Brown fux it all up. He'd rather lose playing his way than win by allowing his players more freedom. Sn: If Darko was the 14th or 15th pick his career is looked at differently. He didn't suck, he just had too much pressure as the #2 pick.
Narrative on Melo would've been totally different. Plays no D, X. Selfish, X. No playoff success, X. No rings, X. I think it totally would've changed the whole narrative between Lebron and Melo. At the time of entering the league, Wade was mostly an uncertain player who potential the really developed towards the second half of the season, and it was mostly between Melo and Lebron for ROY. Lebron being on the East has definitely helped his career out tremendously, so imagine Melo also on the East. Melo with an aged Chauncey gave the Lakers a run for their money in the Western conference finals. Now instead of that it's Melo with Mr. Big shot and a squad of dawgs. I still think Lebron would've came out with the better overall career because of how he took care of his body, but the conversation would be SO MUCH CLOSER. The worst thing that happened to Melo was not ending up in Detriot. The second worse is him not taking his conditioning seriously enough early on in his career.
That lineup would’ve been Pg: Chauncey SG: Rip SF: Melo PF: Cliff Robinson C: Ben Wallace Rasheed WAS NOT on that team yet! Not even winning the East with that lineup... P.S. I’m a Piston FAN from the Cradle to the Grave...Eastside Born & Raised Melo wasn’t the answer!
What? you clearly forgot we had a future starter in Okur off the bench right? We def would have won the east...U thought Sheed was the michael Jordan of the team or something?
@@AllThingsKen we not winning shit the team was built on defense help side defense help the helper. Okur wasn’t doing shit to help on the defensive. Rasheed was the missing link of that team and pushed us over the top. Another thing everybody had Darko at the top of there draft board not just Detroit and the addition of Rasheed is what brought my team it’s 3rd title. Who tf you think memo was???? You fail to realize the backbone of the team was Defense Defense Defense adding a 19yr Carmelo wouldn’t have brought us a title but, I guess you think Memo and Melo = Shaq n KB gtfoh
I still say it would of been some Jordan type shit if Melo went to Detroit 🤦🏾♂️ fo sho a 3peat from 04-07 ....But Bron and Wade was coming & that Boston team still would have been put together so we lose in 08 and 09 Melo Still on the Team...and we bring in some more Help like a Backup PG some how get a good free agent or 2 then 10,11,12 we run it up again & then Melo walks away to the Knicks with a winning pedigree and takes them to the finals 1 time in 4 years losing to Lebron James who has 3 rings to his 6 and Wade's 3 rings along with Bosh or Amar'e Stoudemire
Honestly is accurate. In 04 and 05 we go 54-28 both years and win it all That 64-18 05-06 season we could’ve been a 73-9 team and win the finals for a 3rd straight year. 07 we finish 54-28 and a 52-30 the year after. Before we start declining we’ll prolly get some big FA at the time over summer 08 and run it up to the finals again going 58-24 but likely the Lakers get their revenge 5 years later and beat them in 6. In 09-10 finishing 54-28 we run it up to the ECF again and get smacked by Orlando. In 10-11 u might think that would be the year the Pistons begin their depressing decline with all their players on their way out, especially losing Sheed in 2009. They Pistons show they could be good for 2 more years and go 57-25 with another ring that summer and the year after the Pistons finish 1 seed in the conference during the 12’ lockout year with a 45-21 record but that would be their last reign of the east year as they would begin their irrelevant and mediocrity era today in the 12-13 season as it would be a fun 8-9 years.
But here is the biggest question. Does Detroit still make the trade to get Rasheed Wallace? That trade happened midway through Carmelos rookie season. That’s a big question mark.
Ben Wallace had a good take on it - he said they may not have one 2 chips if they drafted Melo because of how much they would have had to play him. They didn’t have time to wait and develop players that was their window there and then.
Sucks how In order to be considered an all time great they have to win a chip. Winning requires much more thank just an elite individual star. At the end of the day it’s a team sport. Then people wonder why players are moving to better situations. Had Lebron stayed in Cleveland and only won one chip his status wouldn’t be nearly as great as it is now.
IG: confused_melo For FACTS #Ginga lol he’d be a beast to us but no one would consider him top 5. Lol if he had that 2018 Cavs vs this Injured warriors he would’ve had a chance. his Cleveland chip is more valuable than his Miami one.
As a heat fan I hate to admit it. But they still win 2004. 2005 they make the finals loose in 7 to the spurs, they win there. Then my heat in 2006 beat them when they were 64-18 in 6 games in the conference finals. They probably win there also. Then 2007 they loose to cavs in conference finals in 6, that Cavs team sucks. They would make finals not sure if they would have beaten spurs but who knows. Then 2008 they make conference finals against big three Boston took them with 6. Maybe with Melo they beat them also.
I just realized... whats even crazier from a drafting standpoint is, they also could've had Chris Bosh ( or D Wade, but not drafting him is a little more understandable), and if they get him , and utilize him as an undersized 5 and back up 4, they likely win 3 chips as well. That Darko pick gotta be the worst ever. Sam Bowie at least had his career cut short by injury. The Darko pick was just terrible.
Love Mello as a Knick but boi!!!!! Yeah Prince would’ve lost playing time but I think he would’ve accepted that 6th man trophy proudly. Ben, Sheed, Mello, Rip, Billups... lineup wise, he would’ve been a better defender. He wouldn’t have to be the best defender though.
People who are Melo haters don’t understand that systems build players and teams. Lebron on Cleveland initially as great as he was never got close to a championship. Melo on the Knicks would have always played out the same way
IG: confused_melo For FACTS #Ginga so is rodman, draymond and iverson, hell even Kobe was a ballhogger that shot too much. You can be a cancer with bad coaches and management. You can also win rings if they know how to use your talent
And just as hypothetically the Pistons adapt to Carmelo's weak defense no ball movement play style. That's the thing about hypothetical situations, you can spin them both ways. Melo has had plenty of time in the league to spin a different story about himself.
Well obviously Cleveland wouldn’t have won if y’all had melo. 😂😂 dude stating the obvious pistons team would have been even more better than Cleveland.
@@antoinebutler6675 well to be fair those pistons team were defense minded... they didn't really have great consistent offense. Chauncey and Rip were good but not big time scorers. Melody changes that dynamic

They had the chance to choose D.wade too! Pistons could of had a dynasty for sure. That's why the GM position is critical in any team's success as well.
Leonel Langston they had chauncy billups bro. He way more deadly than wade at that time
Rabin Maharjan maybe that first year but by year 2 Wade was better then Billups you see what he did in his 3rd year in the finals

Ronnie Alston bro im not a wade hater but wade had shaq and bron who are top 5 all time. Having said that i think everyone knows they should have drafted melo.
More importantly Melo would’ve learned to play “Team Basketball” defense first & move the ball creating the best shot
@Red HawK13 I mean his career speaks for himself, he known as really being a "me" first player then "team" player
@Red HawK13 bro I know he can do those things but he only seems to emphasize that style in Team USA play not on Denver or the Knicks.
You realize that Melo has one of the highest basketball IQ’s ever.. especially offensively and creating shots
Jeron Branon Kobe had that same mentality, just that his office actually helped build around him, except his smush parker days😂😂

Rip Hamilton's interview was so genuine I didn't know how he was as a person but ima fan.
Carmelo Anthony is one of the greatest players to not win a ring (one of)
No, not really.
Elijah Ruderman Carmelo will retire top 10 in scoring history scoring champ and a 10X all star. “Not top 20” LOOOL
Roger Wu who didn’t play a lick of defense lol
He's still playing bro.....
To everyone.... Keep safe.. 💕🇴🇲🌹

This is a scary scary scenario. They would’ve been kings
'Bout damn time Melo got some respect put on his name. Dood's easily one of the most underrated ballers of all time.

Darko crying right now
I wish, sadly he never cared about basketball....People act like Dumars was drunk when he drafter him, dude was one of the best built white big men ever.Tall, strong, great shot blocker and yet he wasn't so slow when moving, had good passing and his jumper wasn't so trash at all. There'a a story that he hit like 7-8 straight threes during draft training. Most people wanted him, sadly you can't teach effort, plus larry brown was kinda dick to rookies.
he didn't care back then, doubt he cares right now. His mind was never in the basketball, except maybe for a year or two.
Darko been knowing cmon now. He was happy with the money and fame. Had no work ethic or hunger.
He kinda got bully in Detroit tho😁😁😁
nbr_dbr_brt he still never played 😂😂😂
People always forget, melo was coming out of college and to be surrounded by those vets. They were built different. Melo wouldve been a huge boost to that squad
Could you imagine Melo being held accountable and having to be a consummate professional with his talent scary
Just how Pat Riley & Shaq showed D-wade how to win, Pat & Wade showed Bron how to win & play team ball. The Pistons would've taught Melo the same
Exactly
Damn that’s like the eastern all star team ✊🏽
I don't like RIP when they defeated my Lakers in 04. But now I respect him and I actually wanted them to beat the spurs in 05.
Those pistons were absolute Dogs
As a lifetime Pistons/Bad Boys fan... I been saying this since the 2K3 draft. Strong veteran leadership, hung our hat on Defense, LB as head coach (!) now add this young Bull that can score 30 in his sleep. Sh*t is actually sad being a Detroit fan~thinking abt "what coulda been"
I hope there's a parallel universe where this happened and the Pistons win 5 or more straight championships.
Ppl dont realize giving older guys rest and having young stars come in. this why Celtics stayed good for so long.
Real Talk💯
Still f’n bitter about not drafting Melo. That Pistons team would have been so hard. Neither Bron nor DWade were close to stepping into a situation so perfect for them.
Melo was robbed of rookie of the year. No offense to LBJ but Melo took a team with a worst record and took them to a higher seed than Cleveland. If Melo goes to Detroit it would’ve been a wrap. If that Pistons team thought Melo how to win that 2013 Knicks team wins it all.
john Carlos it's probably bc of lbj was so hyped and him and melo has similar stats so they went with the number 1 pick
I lost money on that lol. Me and my dog bet b4 the season. Me and Melo got robbed lmao
M Haynes how do u love a bet to an annual
@@mantgrta9728 check urban directory
Joe Dumass decided to draft what's his name instead of THE top player in that college year. Like Rip said, Melo likely gets to the D, learns D, and gets at least 1 ring.
That is an incredible point!
with him OR wade, pistons are basically UNBEATABLE. the SCORING MACHINE of THOSE two with that ALL-TIME GREAT defense ? HOLY SHIT
Even though I was rooting for the Lakers, this Detroit team was the definition of TEAM basketball
That shit would have definitely work. I could see Melo on the 2 and rip be the 6th man
Rip is absolutely correct! The Pistons would've won a hand full of titles with Melo!
What Rip said is what I tell everyone
Very well said Mr. Hamilton
Imagine if they would of drafted Wade, rip be gone in a year lol
RIP Rip 😂
On point! Can’t believe Joe Dumars blew that pick.
A core of
Billups
Melo
Rip
Prince
Sheed
Big Ben
Hunter
McDyess
That can run the league for 6-7 years like I drew out, it very well could go from fairytale thinking to a legitimate reality with that team. That's maybe 4-5 rings in 7 seasons.
This is likely how the records r gonna go:
03-04: 60-22 (win finals)
04-05: 54-28 (win finals)
05-06: 70-12 (lose ECF)
06-07: 68-14 (lose finals)
07-08: 55-27 (lose conference semis)
08-09: 59-23 (lose finals)
09-10: 64-18 (win finals)
10-11: 61-21 (lose conference semis)
They would run the NBA and I believe the 11-12 season will be their last good season before rebuild

RIP speaking straight facts
its weird seeing hamilton without his glass mask
And a full beard
Thank you
I was shocked that DETROIT passed on MELO for Darko. One of the DETROIT PISTONS BIGGEST MISTAKES.
RIP Hamilton speaking facts about Carmelo.. I can't believe pistons didn't draft him. We all thought pistons was gone draft melo
I think Rip would have sacrificed just enough to keep Prince and Melo happy, what the hell was Detroit thinking
Tayshon made the block of the year... But the narrativ on Melo's carrear and status would have been different, even if he won only the one championship, He would have a real chance to be a real contender. The game of "what if" is very tricky.
Melo averaged 21 as a rookie. Hell yeah they would’ve got 3
the interesting thing, too, is that before Detroit won the title those players were respected but not revered. in retrospect we know they were championship-quality, but if Carmelo had been in there from the year of that first title then people might have seen Detroit as a team that couldn't have done it without him, and given him a lot of the credit even for the first championship
Bruh im a die hard pistons fan (02-04 pistons screamed team success for me) but that being said as soon as l.b. left i knew it was over for us
Pistons is my favorite team like rip to me is the first 3&D all-star but what he saying is facts Mello only an a team once with the nuggets an most of this players where old even AI if he came to the Pistons instead of what's his face the Pistons would one been scary good
All I can say is real shit RIP
Sounds good but there's also a chance that Larry Brown fux it all up. He'd rather lose playing his way than win by allowing his players more freedom. Sn: If Darko was the 14th or 15th pick his career is looked at differently. He didn't suck, he just had too much pressure as the #2 pick.
Wow this is all Facts Melo was really that Guy Mr. 30 piece a mf Game back then💯👌🏾
Ben must have smoke for Melo because it's no way he really believed what he said. No way!
I believe with Melo the pistons do win at least two rings. Maybe 3, but three is hard to do with any team.
We can change every single outcome to every single season if we played this game of " IF "
Woulda, coulda, shoulda...
*shoulda, coulda, woulda
I did the interview with Ben Wallace...I got this question started between Darko and melo on my show. I didn’t agree with Ben either
RIP!!!!!
Totally agree
So true
Drafting the right prospect is everything , drafting kawhi was the difference between San Antonio’s longevity and Detroit’s
Would sheed trade happen if Detroit drafted melo?
Rip would’ve been the 6th man of 6th mans
These woulda coulda shoulda ofs get old.
That lineup would’ve been
Pg: Chauncey
SG: Rip
SF: Melo
PF: Cliff Robinson
C: Ben Wallace
Rasheed WAS NOT on that team yet!
Not even winning the East with that lineup...
P.S. I’m a Piston FAN from the Cradle to the Grave...Eastside Born & Raised
Melo wasn’t the answer!
@TerrorTown7575 that’s why they acquired Rasheed Wallace
What? you clearly forgot we had a future starter in Okur off the bench right?
They Pistons show they could be good for 2 more years and go 57-25 with another ring that summer and the year after the Pistons finish 1 seed in the conference during the 12’ lockout year with a 45-21 record but that would be their last reign of the east year as they would begin their irrelevant and mediocrity era today in the 12-13 season as it would be a fun 8-9 years.
never ending excuses for Carmelo. woulda coulda shoulda
RIP could shoot!
Once again people assume the chemistry would be there and that Melo wouldn't have an ego still (which still would be very possible).
Yeah but he wouldn’t really have a say being a rookie. He would have to drop the ego
But here is the biggest question.
Does Detroit still make the trade to get Rasheed Wallace? That trade happened midway through Carmelos rookie season.
That’s a big question mark.
THIS. People discrediting Sheed big time. He had a huge impact on that team.
Ben Wallace had a good take on it - he said they may not have one 2 chips if they drafted Melo because of how much they would have had to play him. They didn’t have time to wait and develop players that was their window there and then.
Melo took a team to the playoffs his rookie year IN the west!!! WTF is Ben talking about?!?
Rip is 100%right
Sucks how In order to be considered an all time great they have to win a chip.
Jeremy lin has a champion ring b4 melo let that sink in
As a heat fan I hate to admit it.
Think about all the people the Pistons passed up on to get Darko
Facts…narrative is everything now right?
BIGGEST PROBLEM: Larry Brown didn't play rookies
!!!!!!!!!!!
Just, Think about it, oooow we.
I don’t know if would work honestly. Probably the biggest what if in Detroit Pistons history
Hell yea we would of won more rings if Melo would of came to the D
RIP speaking facts. Joe was a fool for drafting Darko.
Who’s here after Melo’s interview😂
And just as hypothetically the Pistons adapt to Carmelo's weak defense no ball movement play style. That's the thing about hypothetical situations, you can spin them both ways. Melo has had plenty of time in the league to spin a different story about himself.
Well obviously Cleveland wouldn’t have won if y’all had melo. 😂😂 dude stating the obvious pistons team would have been even more better than Cleveland.
Bron beat them by his self so he jus sayin one rookie of that caliber wud best Cleveland
@@antoinebutler6675 well to be fair those pistons team were defense minded... they didn't really have great consistent offense. Chauncey and Rip were good but not big time scorers. Melody changes that dynamic
