I first heard Mr Kinzer interviewed by Terry Gross on NPR, I was intrigued and wanted to learn more. This interview is a real mind opener as to how our government policies were shaped then, and still, by the Dulles Brothers. One point that Kinzer made with Terry Gross is how stunned he was by the realization that history is made and moved by the psychology of single individuals, at times. I've seen this in companies--that the person/group at the top filters and picks those who make up the company valuing particular traits and points of view. I never thought about that on the scale of governments, countries and continents. I look forward to reading his book!

it all comes down to animal instincts. the elite who control everything that everyone says and does behave more like animals than anyone else. being rich kicks in all your animal instincts of being the dominant one in the pack and turns you evil. inequality is the greatest problem every generation has faced since civilization began and rich people are the source of all problems in the world. outlaw rich people, capitalism and replace it with a system where people do things based on the desire to help other people like communism, since the love of money is the root of all evil. i bet everyone reading this is under the impression that communism is evil rather than the solution to all the world's problems and that just goes to show the power of the capitalist elite.

@@dizzyboy352 communism could work... on a commune. In a western society it would lead to more death than the attempts we saw in the 20th century. The type of person that could successfully and fairly portion out G&S while appointing duties is about 1/10,000. If you think capitalism is rank with corruption, imagine how disproportionate things get under the best circumstances. What did your professors say about the failures of communism in the 20th century? lemme guess... everything would have been fine if those meddling Americans hadn't started economic hostilities with USSR. Nah.

One can observes this phenomenon too in the limited tv series IMPEACHMENT, specifically in the personage of Linda Tripp. One can also understand why the GOP despises the Clintons…they out-performed the GOP at their own game, albeit with understated elegance. IOW, the Clintons were/are professional politicians unlike the bumbling GOP. IMHO.

@@dizzyboy352 Capitalism works fairly well when applied with real Democracies. Of the 80 coups or election manipulations by USA, many were full democracies and USA will not have a Democracy in the same hemisphere as USA as Americans might get ideas and try democracy, too. Carter was advised to send death squads to south and central Americas but he was a real Christian aka Too Christian, he was against genocide (1983 Mayan Genocide as charged by The Hague). He was also allying with jihadists as it might come back to bite us.(see 9/11). The Economic Blockade that the United States imposed on Cuba, and which has been uninterrupted for more than 60 years, is the product of the revenge of the Dulles brothers against Fidel Castro, as a result of Castro expropriating the United Fruit Company (UFCO), more than 100,000 hectares of cultivation. Allen Dulles and his brother John Foster Dulles were a shareholder in UFCO, and were on the UFCO payroll for more than 30 years. Both demanded payment from the Cuban government for the land expropriated from the multinational, a ridiculously high amount, when the United Fruit Co. had obtained these large estates for $17 dollars per hectare and demanded compensation for $6,800 dollars per hectare. Castro was also asked to pay the cost of hotels, houses and casinos owned by the New York mafia and other figures of high politics in the US. As Cuba does not pay, the Economic Blockade continues. Now, 10 Presidents have passed in the White House, and the Blockade continues. If you want to know about the atrocities and massacres of the UFCO in Colombia, the Caribbean and Central America, consult Wikipedia: “Wars of the Banana Republics”.

También se le pedía a Castro que pagara el costo de los hoteles, fincas y casinos propiedad de la mafia de New York y de otros personajes de la alta política de los US. Of course, Kinzer's knowledge is impressive, and he includes the government more in the CIA action than David Talbot did, this is a big plus. What makes me think critically of Kinzer is his allegedly "historical understanding" of the 50s. It was clear to every sound person back then, after witnessing the atrocities of two world wars and in the terminal phase of British colonialism, that intervention and overthrow of democratically elected foreign governments were morally, legally, and politically wrong, and in the long run just stupid and counter-productive. The very mural by Rivera Kinzer praises speaks out loud enough. The deeper cause behind the CIA actions seems to me, as a European and German, to be the jingoistic tradition in US foreign history visible in the dealing with native Americans, Mexico, Hawaii, and the Philippines since the 19th century, and going back up to the hypocritical and self-serving ideology of pseudo-liberalism at the very beginning of the USA which veiled an openly racist and genocidal ideology based on social Darwinism. The Dulles brothers are not like "we" are or have been or were, they are on the evil side of history, and they were already in their time. In this respect, I agree more with Talbot, Hedges, and Chomsky, among others, Chomsky being a good example for someone who had a clear view already 50 years ago. I do not speak of Andrew Carnegie and William James. You easily find decent and mentally sound people in all ages.

thank you Stephen Kinzer, an extraordinary if not unique US treasure and, of course, an enormous credit to the Watson Institute. Even this interview makes clear how crippled the US world view is by the narrow minded view of a privileged clique of provincial Americans. As English plutocrats of the highest status were fervent early supporters of Hitler the Dulles brothers were basically ignorant hicks, confident that if shop clerks in Moscow were in charge they had to be subverted? As Harry Truman, a shop clerk, could be made president of the United States, two well born religious zealots could rule the country. Class warfare is eternal, perhaps we should embrace and own it. One has to be concerned that when and if Americans ever wake up to what the world is really about it will be too late.

Some important revelations come out in this interview. There was disagreement between George Frost Kenan and the Dulles brothers.
Kenan was an advisor in the Truman administration while the Dulles pair were players in the Eisenhower years.
To get a better understanding of this distinction it looks like The Brothers would give a generational view of the disagreement.
The Dulles view of government is representative of a 19th century world view. While The Kenan view is one of the early views of the new realities posed by the nuclear power realities.
That war cannot be used without caution in a nuclear age.
The Dulles view did not seem to take into account that the nuclear option could not just kill your enemy but effectively wipe out life on the planet.
    Period.

The way I see it, if mankind wants to take this route, then it will learn the lessons specific to the route. A trial of fire which will likely burn very badly. Nothing, not even things who desire self preservation the most, will live forever.

The Elder Dulles called the Non-alignment of our PM Nehru, "immoral".
I wonder whether he was also targeted like Sukarno of Indonesia and why he was not dethroned, by the Dulles brothers. Nehru was our PM till 1964, for a period of 17 years.

Hitherto acceptable norms of human conduct do not apply. If the United States is to survive, long-standing America concepts of "fair play" must be reconsidered. They also saved western Europe from communist subversion by funding social democratic parties and exposing Communist conspiracies through publications all funded covertly. You cannot blame the Dulles brothers for Khomeini that happened years later. Neither Dulles created the North Vietnamese Army. The Dulles fought the good fight under the most unimaginable political, economic and cultural threats of Soviet and Chinese Communism and bought time for the liberal world to recover from WW2 and the collapse of their empires. God bless their memory.
