  • Stephen Kinzer's book provides us with a glimpse into the overt and covert policies of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and CIA Director Allen Dulles during the Eisenhower administration and how their actions and "secret world war" shaped and changed the trajectory of 6 countries and created a pattern of interventions that benefited U.S. interests that linger with us until today.

These two brothers should be prosecuted for their crimes against humanity.

I cringe at the sound of Dulles brothers; what they did not only to this country, but to a dozen other generations of humanity from Guatemala to Vietnam was criminal and their misspent time - along with Eisenhower and Nixon - should never be repeated again. The Brothers were criminals under the guise of representatives not only of the United States, but to all who have suffered because of their cruelty, bias, anti-Semitism, and a variety of prejudices - their love of money and power was a dominant factor in their relationship with to our nation and our democracy.

This guy is blaming Americans somehow for the evil manifestation of the Dulles brothers who were in control of US foreign policy after WW2. They were the sons and grandsons of Presbyterian preachers who presumably preached the ten commandments, but paradoxically perhaps the Dulles bros practiced hypocrisy and preached hatred. Allen played both sides. He, Prescott Bush and Averell Harriman financed Hitler's war machine but also led OSS from Switzerland before becoming director of the CIA. Both Dulles were known to be flagrant adulterers. Allen was sacked by JFK after the Bay of Pigs fiasco and was involved with Hoover, Jack Ruby, LBJ and George H W Bush in the assassination of JFK. Their legacy is one of betrayal, hypocrisy, greed and naked ambition.

I hoped he would touch more on Allen Dulles covert operations as head of the CIA in the JFK era, Bay of Pigs, and his
(i would say suspicous) appointment to the Warren Commission. Americans learning this stuff is incredibly relevant today.

Those two were traders to their country! That is how they should be remembered in the annals of history.

Thank you so much for this magnificent presentation, i live in Guatemala. Since that time Corporations still rule the country. All the richnes and land is owned by 1% and half are families from out the country. Because of the infernal war that it developed from this incident people started migrating to the US running away from poverty and war. I think this is the mayor outcome from the coup in Guatemala.

Tanks for this in-depth analysis on the takeover of the US Democracy by a bunch plutocrats. Edgar Hoover also fits pretty well against this awful background of corruption. Let us hope than the US are much more than their financiers, monopolists and lamentable representatives.

This is pure power nothing more. And the perpetual warfare of today is a very scary bit of residue that Ike warned us about. I fear we are on a path of no return. Tell the people you love just that ...

One pet peeve. I don't like when journalists use the new-speak of the government. It should be called what it is. American "exceptionalism" is really "unilateral aggression or interference". American "interests" are the interests of the business elites who own and run the United States of Oligarchs.

If the talk is representative of what's in the book, the book is a cover-up. It begins with the 1950s and ignores Allen Dulles's role in the Second World War. Allen Dulles can't be understood without understanding his connection to transnational Nazism.
