I would love to see the big big waves. The best time to do it is during the Winter between November and February. But regardless of the waves, the place is very beautiful and the town is really nice, you should definitely check it out :)
From the other videos I've seen, when the waves get really large, it looks to be pretty cold outside. Do you know what the air and water temperature normally is at the time?

In praia do Norte, when the swells are really big it is a bit risky to be on the beach but it is possible. However, because the waves form behind the cliff you do not have such a good view from the beach as you have from the cliff. That is probably why most videos are filmed from there
