Dikhawa is part of India culture. If you don't spend then economy will slow down. Also some people's opinion is spend and enjoy now rather than saving and suffering now thinking will enjoy saving after 20 years, when not sure if will be alive then.

I'm 35 now, I started getting into the habit of saving in the last few years, maybe because of covid 19 lockdown, before then i had a terrible habit of wasting money, as i matured, i realise what you think is great when you're in youth is not great when you're in 30's, playing keeping up the Joneses does keep people poor, like I have a car, the neighbour has a big car I must have one too, people easily get fooled by these so called influencers on social media and celebrities especially in India,

Completely agree.....i know my financial situation...but my wife is so much influenced by this branded culture and repeatedly fights with me over buying expensive things, food and travel....

Lavish wedding parties are unnecessary, people see someone has a massive party then they put unnecessary pressure on themselves to match or do better than this or that person, it's a terrible trap to fall into, also i don't understand why students are getting finance especially international students to buy expensive cars, surely the car dealerships do financial checks on potential customers on their ability to meet the monthly payments 🤔
Main reason people go over the board to buy expensive cars is to get attention from girls. I have notices this with myself. I have a friend who makes 1 lakh per month here in India and spends 80k+ per month and drives a 15 lakh car. Plus, he always have a tension of monthly payments.
On the other hand, I make triple of that guy, I live debt free, I drive a pre-owned 2011 Hyundai hatch and I don't get attention from girls and at this point of life I have stopped caring about it because my investments bring me 2 months of salary every year for free without working.
In short, in our modern Punjabi culture, show off is celebrated. Investment/savings is considered as poor man's thing.
