  • The original starter on my 2004 John Deere L120 with the 20HP Briggs and stratton V-Twin failed and needed to be replaced. This video is an easy overview of the replacement of this starter and the hard to reach T40 Torx driver.
    Thanks for watching!
    Cheers

    I ended up using a T40
L-shaped tool and used a wrench for leverage, worked great.

Nice job. Wish I would have found your video before I did my starter. I ended up using a long T40 bit too - only way to do it really. I took it a step further and magnetized the bit to keep that 2nd bolt from falling off when you're trying to get it in position. I also put breakable thread locker on the bolts. The other advantage of the long bit is you don't have to loosen the shield to get in there. Love the old school fire barrel.

Thanks for checking out the video, at least you figured a way to do it. I haven't considered thread lock but that's a good idea for sure.

Great vid, helped me out! Time to get a smaller T40 that fits in there. Wondering why the starter gear failed (split in half), could be age, or could be a weak spring, or just ???

It's designed as a failure point, probably to save other parts from damage. I would think age plays a large role in the strength of the part.

the video is well done but for me it is missing a step. the step is removing the plastic cover that gives you access to the starter mounting bolts. I have removed all the bolts that I can see and the back 2/3 is free to remove. the front part near the air filter housing does not want to come loose. I am afraid if I just try to pry it off that something will break. can you explain how to remove the plastic engine cover that has already been removed at the start of your video? thanks.

If you have loosened the bolts that hold the cover on the engine it should lift straight up and pull off. the air filter cover needs to be off also.

I did all that but could not get it to release. I ended up using my hand to pull up the cover on the side closest to the driver's seat and put a deep socket under the cover and on top of the engine. That gave me the clearance I need to remove the starter mounting bolts. I now have a starter on order. Thanks for the video, it helped a lot. I just hope that fixes my issue, the cap at the top of my old starter was gone and part that goes up to engage the motor when the starter is running was in the area where the cap should have been so it was not engaging with the motor when attempting to start my mower.

There is a screw under the air cleaner filter pre-filter screen that holds down the front of the housing. Remove that and the housing should lift straight off.

I'm having this same issue on my D140. I can't get the plastic cover to lift off for the life of me. Removed the air filter and bottom screw. The weird thing is all the bolts holding the plastic cover on broke loose but none of them will back out. They just keep spinning. It's driving me insane!
