  • We are back down at the wonderful Farnham Estate Radisson Blu Golf and Spa Hotel in Co Cavan for a few days pampering.
    In this video we have dropped into Cavan town after which the County takes it' s name. Cavan is a typical Irish market town. It has the narrow streets with all their friendly hustle and bustle.
    Cavan (/ˈkævən/; Irish: an Cabhán, meaning "the hollow") is the county town of County Cavan in Ireland. The town lies in Ulster, near the border with Northern Ireland. Cavan was founded by the King of East Breifne, Giolla Íosa Ruadh O’Reilly, sometime during his lordship between 1300 and his death in 1330. During his lordship, a Franciscan friary was established close to the O’Reilly stronghold at Tullymongan and was at the centre of the settlement close to a crossing over the river and to the town’s marketplace. The friary’s location is marked by an eighteenth-century tower in the graveyard at Abbey Street which appears to incorporate remains of the original medieval friary tower. There are about 30,000 people living within a 16 km radius of the town.
    Cavan's successful O'Reilly 'clan', gave rise to the well known term 'Living the life of Reilly' for anyone who was doing well financially. Popular Irish ballladeer Percy French lived in Cavan for a number of years.
    I learnt from grim experience that there are plenty of ladies shoe shops in Cavan! lol

    My grandmother Daisy Reilly is passed on now. Daisy was a very Irish grandmother living in West Virginia. Our family line is from Cavan and King Cathal DB O'Reilly and Cathal Mac Enhain. My family left Ireland about 1607 and came to Virginia/ West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. We are still proud to have Irish Heritage.

      Hi AbCC, Great to hear from you all the way from Virginia/West Virginia/ Pennsylvania. We McCleans have Irish relatives all over America. Ireland's greatest export over the ages has been people! lol The Irishness never leaves you. I hope you make it back 'home' for a visit some time. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland.

      Hi James. Good to hear from you. Ireland's biggest export has always been its people. It is the same even today. The cost of living in Ireland today is very high and there are few good jobs available, so young people leave. The Reilly surname is strongly associated with Co Cavan. Every other person you talk to is a Reilly!!! I'm not sure about the Brady surname. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills of Northern Ireland

      I hear what you are saying Bella. We also get alot of rain and overcast skies in Belfast but when the sun makes an appearance all is well.
      We have stayed in Cavan a few times now for long weekends etc It seems a super place. Very community minded, friendly, homely, great scenery and walks and as safe as anywhere in Ireland.

    I would love to visit there someday. My mom's family surname is O'Reilly. (We are from Cuba of all places 😅). We didn't even know it was Irish until we moved to the U.S., and on St Patrick's Day a teacher told me "Happy St Patty's Day O'Reilly!" ☘😆. In Cuba we used to pronounce it the way you'd read it literally in Spanish. I remember nobody could ever spell it right, even though one of the main streets in Old Havana is O'Reilly street. When people in Cuba asked me where was it from, I'd say: I think it's English.🤷🏽‍♂️😱🤣

      @TomMcClean  4 года назад +1

      Hi PSGM2,
      I'm not at all surprised at thia.
      When we stopped in Cavan we were told that 50% of the people living in the town were called O'Reilly! And no I'm not joking! It is a very common surname. You know the old phrase 'Ireland's greatest export was it's children', is actually true. The emigration from these towns and villages over the year was phenomenal. Although the birth rate was high the towns and villages never got any bigger. My father's 2 brothers left home and I had 3 great uncles and an aunt left too -all for America Australia or N. Zealand.

    My dad was born in cavan 1943, never spoke of his family just said he was an orphan , i want to research the family tree but no idea where to start i tried online and didnt find much, if i went to dublin with his birth certificate will the people in records office help me? X

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  4 года назад +1

      Hi Samantha,
      First thing do not pay out any money for a search online which you can do yourself! Second Do you have an actual address for your father and his family? This would be very good. His parents and grandparents likely were born in Cavan in that house too. so it will be registered to them. I found my dad this way.
      Go to GRONI online.
      www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/go-groni-online
      Go to the free searches. Your fathers family WILL be here somewhere. But his parents need to be born before 1921when Northern Ireland came into being.
      Alternatively your grandparents records will have been kept in the church they attended in Cavan in the register of deaths births and marriages! You need your dad's full name and date of birth and you need to know his family church. Churches are very very good at keeping records. Best wishes from Belfast Northern Ireland
      ps This has only been a short reply. Get as much info from elderly relatives as you can too.

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean  4 года назад +2

      Oh dear there isn't a lot to go on there Samantha. You have no address in Cavan or anything. Was your father a Catholic or Protestant? This is important for going to the right church to look up baptismal records if you ever come over to personally check. What church were your folks married in? are there any old named wedding photos with his families photo in them? Cavan is still a small insular town where everyone still knows everyone else so you might be lucky if you come over. The local Cavan library is very good. Unfortunately you are likely to find that there are stacks of people living there with your dad's surname! I'm not sure what else to say. Best wishes As U2 sang I hope you find what you are looking for.

      Hi Mrs F I'm sorry but i cannot give you any proper answer to your questions about Cavan as I do not live there. I can tellyou that Dublin just a few miles to the south of Cavan is very diverse in population make up. I expects Cavan is marginally less so although I saw lots of coloured folk walking about the streets. Ireland as a whole is becoming more mixed culture/race all the time. Mamy of the doctors nurses and restaurant folk would be of mixed race.
