Clones Town (Updated) - A Visit Through The Years

  • Greetings to all from Clones Town
(The original Clones Video with 10K views disappeared from RUclips)
I have taken the opportunity to update the video a little bit and have uploaded it again. It now includes a short segment of the 1964 Fleadh Ceol. It is a very grainy piece of film and of poor quality, but I think it is worthwhile seeing in any event. This was taken from a short BBC film.
I also managed to include a few segments of film of the GNR Trains coming into Clones Train Station. I would love to find more of this film as I think it's a very important part of our heritage)
I hope this video appeals to everyone who lives in Clones, anyone who has ever lived in Clones, and to all it family decendents researching their roots. Clones is a town of which we should all be proud.
In compiling this video I could not help but be humbled by thoughts of our ancestors walking the same streets, past the same buildings, worshipping in the same churches and hearing the exact same bells of the Sacred Heart Church which are on the soundtrack of this video.. Some of these old photographs go back to the late 1800s' (not photographed by me!)
It is often said that a town is only as good as it's people. Clones Town has great People. Despite all the adversity visited on Clones Town over the years, it's people have always bounced back and come through with it's tremendous community spirit.
One of the biggest blows ever suffered by Clones (in living memory) was undoubtably the closure of the Great Northern Railway in 1957. It's effect at the time is impossible to put into words. Growing up in Clones during the sixties, it's closure was constantly bemoaned by everybody. Of course the town also had to deal with the woes brought on by the Troubles and the unavoidable economic difficulties of being a border town.
Clones Town has always punched above it's weight with it's number of well known sportsmen, authors, playwrights, musicians and composers.

    History
Clones was the site of a monastic settlement in the kingdom of Dartraige Con-innsi, originally founded by Tigernach (anglicised Tierney) in the 6th century, until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII. St. Tigernach or Tierney's abbey, built in the early 6th century was dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul. Tigernach later became Bishop of Clogher and removed that see to Clones, where he died of the plague in 550. The abbot was the Primus Abbas, or first mitred abbot of Ireland. The ruins of a 12th century abbey building can still be found in the town, along with a sarcophagus reputed to have been built to house the remains of Saint Tighearnach, and a 9th century round tower and high cross.
    Transport
The town was the site of a major junction on the Great Northern Railway during the 19th and early 20th centuries, where routes from Enniskillen, Armagh, Cavan, and Dundalk converged. This formed the focal point of the railway network in what is now the border area between the Republic and Northern Ireland. The railways were finally closed after unilateral closure of the Northern Ireland route sections by the Northern Authorities and the Ulster Transport Authority (see History of rail transport in Ireland). Clones railway station was opened on 26 June 1858, closed for passenger traffic on 14 October 1957, and finally closed altogether on 1 January 1960.

My wife Ronnie nee McCabe of "The Stag's Head" Fermanagh Street and myself very much enjoyed the selection of photos old and new of Clones, which brought back memories of days gone-by and updated our take on Clones, many thanks, Enda.

Hugh Morrison Thanks very much Hugh and give my best regards to Ronnie. I remember our school days very well. It’s not that long ago, and we’re still only spring chickens! I’m thrilled that people are enjoying the videos. Clones is a lovely wee town with a great community of people, and these videos were a labour of love. Thanks again.

What a lovely video, very well produced, I love seeking out footage of Ireland and great videos like this pop up from time to time. My cousin lives in Clones and I visit her when I'm on holiday in Ireland. I think it's a lovely town. I remember my mum taking me to a Fleadh Cheol in Clones in the 1960's when I was about 6 or 7 years old, it was a great adventure for me going there on the bus from Cavan town, Not long after that I came to live in England but will never forget that happy experience 💚

Clones is a great little community still and with the finest of people - even if I say so myself :) I don't know if you have already seen this video of Clones in the 60's. It's a cine film taken my my Dad. ruclips.net/video/jLyXPP7cqlw/видео.html

Lived in Clones from 1950 to 56.. father worked on GNR.. remember going to Bundoran by train… lived in Lr Abbey St and then O Neill park…

Thanks for watching and commenting. The Bundoran Express is always spoken about in affectionate terms. I remember my Father saying that he, along with my uncle watched the last express train leaving Bundoran. The closing of the railway line in October 1957 is often lamented, and indeed it was a colossal loss to the area. Of course we are all slaves to the state of the economy at any given time, but it is still difficult to believe the closure of the GNR was anything other than shortsightedness. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and I suppose crystal balls were in short supply at the time.

Thanks, great work! Are there any memorials to John Wesley in Clones? It seems he lived there for a period an established a Methodist church in Clones? Thanks.

    • @musichead1313
      @musichead1313  2 года назад +1

Thanks very much for your comments. Yes indeed John Wesley founded his first church in Cara Street, almost opposite where I used to live. When I was growing up I used to hear this spoken about from time to time, but I don’t believe there was any plaque erected back then. However Clones Historical Society have been very active over the last number of years and this might have changed now. You could make an inquiry to Clones Notice Boards (on Facebook) and they would be happy to respond. Incidentally the Wesley Church was behind the house you can see at around 13 seconds on this video ruclips.net/video/HDV3K4BENZM/видео.html The property had become a scrapyard during my time living in Clones which was run by the late Pat Grue, who is the gentleman on the right n the photo. I hope this information helps.

Clones is right on the Border which I know was difficult in the past but hopefully is not so bad now, even with Brexit and all the hoo-ha with that.
Thank you for the views though-well done of course too.

Thanks for watching and commenting on the video. The good news is that Clones is going through a renewal at the moment and has received a huge injection of funds to develop the Ulster Canal in the locality. Here is a link www.anglocelt.ie/2022/07/04/e40-million-announced-for-next-phase-of-ulster-canal-project/. Hopefully this will bring about a resurgence in the local economy and beyond.

Dear Enda, i have come across this and it me reminds me of my Great Aunt Lizzie from clones). Do you have any information with regards to my Family So i can continue to build my family tree please. I Believe she went by the name liz (McKenna?)and grew up to be very old indeed and lived with her brother? Jimmy McKenna. I visited about 30 years ago. All I can remember apart from the Sweet shop the Pub and Cross in town is that it used to be 30 mins walk from town and im sure we went uphill for a bit, maybe a roundabout/pond.....there was no street lighting. It was a long time ago but any information you can give me would be great. kind regards

Hello James, Thank you for making contact. I’m happy this video brings back memories for you. Clones, as you probably know is a very historic town. As you might expect in a small country like Ireland, each county would carry a preponderance of specific family names and the McKenna family name origin is strongly associated with Co Monaghan. I don’t know if you are on Facebook, but Clones Notice Boards among other things is a fantastic resource for finding out things. If you like (?) I can pass to them a copy of the text of your message and ask them to post it to see if anybody can provide further information as it would be interesting to see what might come back for you.
