Except he's totally wrong that the reason why you want high efficiency power supply is electricity cost. The reason why you want efficient power supply is because of reduced heat. Platinum power supply is good for extremely extremely high power system.

A good argument for an upper tier power supply could also be fan noise.... a high end PSU, that is more efficient tends to also have better fans that are quieter.... there are people who value that as well... but as always.. great video.
As a general focus comment, I am happy there is someone dedicated to actually talk about and recommend the "sweet spot" or "bang for buck" products.... Everybody else seems to focus on the high end, top tier thing that not everyone can afford...

It all comes down to when I have looked at dozens of other videos to get information for something I want or need for a computer. I will come back to "TECH DEALS" and the gentleman that gives me the information and steers me in the right direction. Excellent advice and instruction given in a clean and uncluttered way that distracts from the information I need. No mumbling, out of focus video, talking over my head, too much techno babble, straightforward information and suggestions that are spot on. This man needs to have a show on tv, because he is that good, until then I will come back to his RUclips videos for tech information.

I bought a Corsair RM750 about three years ago for my first build, which had a g3258 and a GTX 960. It is now inside my new Ryzen 7 build, which has an overclocked R7 1700, two overclocked GTX 1070s, two hard drives, two SSDs, two sticks of overclocked ram, 6 fans, an AIO water pump, and an LED strip. IMHO, the PSU is the only thing you can future proof, so I'd suggest you buy a 650 to 800 watt psu and you will be golden for any upgrades you might make in the future, and if you get a PSU with a 0RPM mode you willmost likely run it with the fan turned off most of the time, even when gaming.

First off, I am so thankful for your videos @TechDeals! You are teaching me so much. I deeply appreciate your time.
Second, I am seeking some guidance for a power supply question for our first build.
I am learning how to build a computer with my boys because they will be doing RUclips videos/gaming etc. I am open to upgrading in the future and that is what brings my question.
Will the power supply I have been given be more than okay?
    Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan, Sleeved Cables
Or will it be a good choice to upgrade to:
EVGA 750 B3, 80 Plus BRONZE 750W, Fully Modular, EVGA ECO Mode
The reason why I ask, is the EVGA 750 will run me $64 after rebate and shipping costs. I also really like that it is modular. The free one will have all the power cords dangling and I would like to keep it clean looking. It also appears to be a great deal.
I am curious if I should keep my money and go with the free power supply? Or upgrade to modular power supply with a 5 year warranty at a great deal?
Or maybe...... I should go with the free power supply and upgrade our case to: Phanteks PH-EC416PSTG_BK Eclipse P400S Silent Edition with Tempered Glass, Satin Black Cases?
Thank you in advance for any thoughts and suggestions for helping us with our first build together!
Here is the system we are building:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (Will look into overclocking)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX B350-F GAMING ATX AM4
    Memory: ADATA - XPG GAMMIX D10 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666
    Storage: 1) Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB SC GAMING

Fantastic work, as always. What do you think about a nine year old Antec True Power 650W. What I mean is is it ok to keep using it? It's never been pushed, and the voltage levels seem in line with what they should be. Will it go out of spec eventually or fail from age, or is it mostly down to how hard it was used? I don't want to use it too long and damage my system. It's never powered more than one graphics card and two drives.

Did you just unironically recommend an N1?
ok, uh, where do I start? I guess by saying that efficiency isn't related to the quality or reliability of a power supply. Not all bronze units are created equal; a unit can be very efficient, but that doesn't matter much if its capacitors explode when you hook up a high transient draw graphics card to it. You did an excellent job explaining efficiencies and modularity, but there's a lot more that should influence a PSU buying decision than that. The main issue I have is that several of the units you recommended are group regulated, and one of which (the W1) exploded in a review of it.
I highly recommend you look into group regulated units and why they're a really bad idea. Essentially, a power supply has to provide power in three different voltages: 3.3v, 5v, and 12v. The job of the power supply is to make sure that this power output is as consistent and clean as possible, so it would make sense that these would be regulated separately. On most modern units, this is the case; on group regulated ones, the 5v and 12v voltages are regulated *on the same coil.* This topology was common on much older units, but it worked because computers didn't draw nearly as much power as they do today; if the power draw on the 12v line gets too high (which is a real concern given how much modern cards can take,) regulation on the 5v line can fail to the point where it no longer meets the (already very lenient) ATX specification. Combine that with the fact that the W1 lacks functional OTP to protect itself from overheating when its low-quality capacitors inevitably get overdrawn, and you have a recipe for fireworks.
edit: if you need more information, look at the tomshardware review of the N1. It should tell you about what you need to know.

Great video, no doubt. I bought a EVGA 750B supply that is non modular but had nice all black cables. This thing is tough, my girlfriend spilled coke into the psu on the 2nd day of me having it (while it was running) because i was making a custom case and had jumped the 24pin while i was testing things. It cut off ofcourse, so i took the case apart, used an air compressor and paper towels on it for an hour to try to dry it out as fast as i could before it became sticky. 5 months later this thing has not skipped a single beat. Can't beat it, and it only cost me $36 on amazon on sale.

A quick tip though, figure out how much power your pc will use in total (pc part picker works great), double it, and buy the closest number to it while rounding up. So that way your only using half of its possible power, so the fan will not be loud and the psu will not be working hard, making it last longer

Second, it is fully modular so that you can swap out and use custom cables. Those features might be appealing to some and worth the price premium.

As long as your building a rig with a single gpu setup the evga 550g2 is all you need and will last many many builds, it has a 7 year warranty, fully modular, 80+ gold, has eco mode, on tier one of the psu tier list, and is extremely quiet, and is only 80 dollars, as long as your not on an extreme budget this is an amazing psu for the price, I don't know why this psu wasn't on the list.

I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 3600 with RX580 (wanting to upgrade to a 6800 or 3070 in the near future). I've calculated the whole build would draw maximum of 420-450W and now i'm not sure whether it would be better to power it up with either:
    a) Corsair RM 750x Gold
    b) Corsair CX 750F Bronze
    c) Corsair CX 650F Bronze
Would the efficiency ratios really play that much of a difference over time? What about lower wattage vs higher wattage unit drawing power from the wall? And lastly: which would be most efficient during idle operation which would account for more than 50% of use?
It's worth mentioning option A is around $35 more expensive than option B, and $60 more than C.
Both B & C are 2020 models whilst option A is 2018. Both B & C are white and have RGB enabled and controlled from iCue software (in theme which my whole set up).
Keen to hear your opinions and all pros and cons, thanks for your input in advance :)

I tend to treat buying power supplies like a art. You can find some brands are better than others. I see a lot of cheaper power supplies that will supply all the power you need but not a clean signal. I used to only buy PC Power and Cooling (Now Seasonic) for many years because they had the least noise, or volt drop when a huge demand is placed on it quickly, and you would never have a sudden glitch, lockup ect that a real cheap supply would give you. Another thing to look at is how many watts are supplied on each supply line. Some or most have the majority of power going to the 12v and then the 5 and 3.3v line with a touch to the -12v which is really a no issue line. But when you buy the smaller rated power supplies you want to make sure that enough is going to the 12v line to power you cpu and graphics. I would never buy under 500w for a home built sys. and prefer a 700w just in case I want to go crazy in the future. A good power supply will last though many upgrades so it's one of the most important things you will buy for you computer. A good, clean stable voltage with very little noise will treat you well.

Hi my name is Andy im visually impaired. I've built a budget gaming build with an evga 500 watt 80+ white power supply. my question regarding these power supplys is when a computer they are in powers down do they make any noise? when i turn off my pc it makes something like a light whistle. i just want to know if thats normal with these 80+ white power suoplys or if i should be concerned.
    build specs:
    intel pentium g4400
    gigabyte ga-h110m-a motherboard.
    crucial 4gb ddr4 2133 ram.
    WD blue 1tb hard drive,
    xfx rx460 2gb gddr5
evga 500 watt 80+ white power supply.
    zalman zm-t2 plus mini tower.

Great video! I have a question. I own an evga nex750b psu, one with multiple 12v rails and after doing some research I've seen a lot of people saying to avoid it. I'm running an ryzen 7 1700 and gtx 1070 in my system, should I consider getting a higher quality psu to be safe?

I also picked up a nex750b and have heard terrible things. Its been running fine so far, nice and quiet. I am putting a gigabyte 1070 in next month. Will it handle it? Should i abandon ship or see how it goes? Very nervous at this point.

Hi, I'm late to the party here.
    2 things to say :
1st : Loving these no nonsense videos, keep it up :)
2nd : About efficiency , you might want to mention that a higher rated PSU like a gold (or above) generate less waste heat and so require less cooling.
Hence tend to run quieter and cooler than a cheaper unit :)

Hello, @Tech Deals. I'm going to buy a power supply. Can you give any suggestions or make the newer video if applicable? Or nothing has changed after two years... I really wish to get information about any newer models... Currently, I've i5-2310 CPU, 4gb ddr3 1600mhz ram, Nvidia gts450 video card but I'm going to upgrade my PC in future; 8gb+ ddr4 ram, i5 gen8+, video card probably gtx 1060. This is the approximate configuration of what I'm planning to buy.

one important factor you've missed (to some anyway) is the sound output. I at first was going to go with the EVGA G2 because I heard the fan only turns on at a specific point making it totally silent, but then people who have used it said it sounded like a blow dryer when the fans turned on. others saying it was louder than their graphics card on full load which is concerning.
What's a good option to go with if your noise conscious? I'm going to be recording audio and I don't want power supply noise being picked up.

This guy is good. He gives the most un-biased reviews yet. 1) Methodical explanations. 2) I think his reviews, help us get away from our dogmatic fanboy/girlism and be more objective. People for far too long approach reviews with their minds already made up. Basically we just want someone to confirm our preferences so we get the "I was right feel good". I think his reviews help us get away from that and learn to honestly listen to all angles. It's something I haven't seen in several years, maybe even a decade to be honest.

Great video Sir. Could you please help me to choose a PSU for my prebuild machine? As I am going to upgrade my GPU to gtx 1060 amp edition from Zotac. Currently I have i3 6100+gtx 750 ti and 2x4gb ddr4 ram running on a cheap psu.
I have Corsair VS450 in my mind since EVGA's are too costly and unavailable in my country. I have no planning in overclocking.
    450W is enough for Zotac gtx 1060 oc + i3 6100 ?

It says on that cooler master power calculator website 447w so she'll I go for 500w? Or stick to 450w? Please reply! Thanks

My custom build is estimated to consume 420~ watts. So, i chose an EVGA 80+ Platinum 750 model. Is this overkill? My thinking is if i go a little more, then less power should be used allowing the PSU to not run at max output. Thoughts?

Hi tech deals! Can you do a review on Pico PSU's cause I want to use on for an i5 6500/16gb ram/gtx 1060 for an ultra small form factor build. For storage I will be using an M.2 SSD, 525gb ssd, and possibly a second SSD later on. No hard drives in this build to keep everything as quiet and still as possible. I might swap the 1060 for the fanless 1050. If the temps are okay I can live with the low fps for less noise. For CPU cooler I will probably use the Noctua low profile CPU cooler. Any thoughts on this build?

Good video, but I would add regardless of the power supply you buy always check how many amps it has on the 12+ rail(that's what powers the major components) then multiply by 12(40 amps x 12 = 480 watts for example) make sure you're getting what you're paying for because some companies will sell powrer supplies rated for a certain number of watts that can't maintain that load for more than a few seconds then fail, sometimes frying the rest of your computer.

I did go the EVGA 750W G2 myself. Warranties interest me a lot. My last power supply lasted about 5 years which is not bad, but if I can pay a little more to save time and heartache later I am going to do it with computer parts. 750W was overkill but I knew it would carry into my next build and maybe beyond.

Needing my computer to operate quietly and with best efficiency, the power supply I chose was an EVGA 850PQ. This power supply can operate silently without the fan on, or as I have set it, to run quietly at the fan's lowest speed. Only when its power output surpasses ~65%, does its fan speed increase, slightly at first. Max. fan speed is only utilized at max. power output, which is 850 W continuous @ 50°C - a superb max.power output spec. Listed at $160, has a 10 yr warranty, and is semi modular. Replacing a Bronze rated unit, ts platinum rating further reduces the waste heat released into the surrounding air. [I have no AC.]
