Back in the 4th grade i was the best in my class at this game, on free Friday no matter who challenged me i would always beat them for one reason: power sliding.
I was around eleven when I got this game for Christmas alongside Nintendogs and a Nintendo DS system in 2005. (I am twenty-one now, so I believe that is correct) It's been almost ten years, and I finally tracked down a used copy, as I had sold mine long ago. So much nostalgia... God, I feel old.
I remember watching this video when it first came out, it was amazing and nostalgic! I remember playing Mario Kart DS all day by myself and with my friends the various fun Battle Modes, and who can forget the classic Pipe Plaza map? This is one of my personal favorite DS games! Thanks for reviewing.
first, you need to know what a slide boost is: Do a hop jump into a turn, press left-right or right-left (depending on whether your going into a left or right turn) twice until the sparks on the back wheels of your kart turns from blue to red. What this does is it charges up your carts boost and gives your extra speed when you exit a turn. This is snaking: Doing this boost consistently while going down a straight away and putting yourself in a position to go into a slide upon reaching a turn.
to greenguy4301... he means in the sense of that mario kart wii is the better but similar version of Mario Kart DS. I can guarantee that he know that MK DS came before WII
ahhh 6th grade on the bus everyone had a DS and someone always had a copy of this game. the 1 hour long bus ride was awesome because of it. You only needed one copy of the game and we all had an absolute blast playing this game.
The year before the online services were shut down I used to play against people online before school. The sad part was there was only a hand full of people who actually played the game online still so I raced the same few people. Then I heard that the wifi connection would be shut down so I played on it as much as possible.
my brothers got this and its fun as hell, i just cant beleive you didnt say anything about the battle mode! you get a set number of baloons, aka lives, and u can steal them from others and you have to blow them up by blowing on the bottom screen its so sweet
my friends an I used to bring all our DS to school and play mario kart during lessons, it was awesome, we'd hide the DS behind a book and then play over the wireless connection...
2/3 years ago, me, my brothers, and sisters went out to eat at Olive Garden and I brought my DS with me to the restaurant along with Mario Kart DS and Pokemon Soul Silver and when I swapped MKDS with PSS I accidentally left the game on the table and left it their, and I didn't realize it until we got home. :-( I miss this game, so much! :'(
@sonicadx No man for handheld consoles the data is on the cartiage and on the earlier nintendo systems too. For the newer consoles like ps2, xbox 360, wii, etc. The data is on the console. Just because you dropped a blue DS doesn't mean you're data wasn't erased on the mario kart ds cartiage unless you manually erased data on your settings.
Ever since he mentioned, i always laugh at the music because it definitely is extremely happy. I never really took that to notice until after seeing this.
When you skid in Mario Kart DS, you gain a little speed. I don't know if this is a bug or what but people quickly learned how to deliberately skid and go faster. Once you master this, you can beat anyone in any car.
@garettd You have to complete the 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, and 150cc mirror mode in all first place trophie wins to unlock the option to use any character on all types of karts, I used to play this game in 2006 and 2007 and I was a master on wifi. If you haven't completed mario kart ds you will not understand.
I remember playing this game years ago in school with around 8 or more other people using DS Download Play since we all had a DS and a few of us had Mario Kart DS. This game had the best multiplayer in the series, right next to Mario Kart Wii (I remember it being good, correct me if I'm wrong). Also, this is my favourite Mario Kart game of all time. Speaking of multiplayer, does anyone remember the tragic Animal Crossing: Wild World wi-fi? I've never played Wild World but I've heard that it was full of hackers who would use 'seeds' to try and brick other people's games and even their DS.
Now this one I only played a couple of times around 2007 or 2008 so my memory is very cloudy on it. I see this one was the first to have a lot of crazy weapons like that blooper ink, the bullet, and the ghost. I'm so used to Double Dash and haven't played anything newer than DS & Arcade GP yet, so I kinda set my standards at Double Dash. This one looks fun except the blue shells seem to come more than Double Dash.
5:30 Mark: "It's like playing the same track again for the thousandth time of/for the first time". That's why I watch Classic Game Room. Video game reviewing mastery.
I definitely prefer this Mario Kart to Super Circuit, but I think that the drifting is slightly unbalanced, and the battle modes, unless you're playing with friends over wireless, is not very good.
+YLW Pyro Drifting is crazy unbalanced, to the point where people pick characters that have the best drifting just so they can drift over and over throughout each track and receive continuous speed boosts. Definitely a broken mechanic.
I had some good times playing it online. I was nearly unbeatable on rainbow road, haha. It just kinda sucks when you lose to some skeleton koopa troopa who just chain-drifts his way to first place and nobody else can catch up.
I liked this game a little, mainly because I got a used version of the game and everything was beaten and unlocked so I was like, "Oh..." And didn't know what the hell to do.
No mention of the different karts of each character? I've only played older MK titles with one kart per character. Seems like something worth talking about in some more detail.
@littlefishkid actually the bullet bill is better and cant be hit by a star it also cant be beaten by a lightning bolt, homing shell, star, banana. lets see about that whats ur mkds friend code?
I am very interested on what you will think of mario kart double dash for the nintendo gamecube. i never thought much of it at first but i recently revisited it, and ive been playing a lot of super mario kart recently and they really tryed to do something really different. when you get the chance, check it out, its definatley worth it.
unfortunatly, rainbow road from super circuit wasnt a track in here, i love that track, its the best track EVER for time trials in ANY game even non racing games
Woah! Sweet. Never realized how sweet this game looked. I never knew about Super Circuit for GBA either. That rocks. Thanks for the detailed and balanced perspective. :D
@mqgTWO96 Why you think i would manually erase my settings after I beat the game ? Im serious I dropped it and then all the data was deleted when I turned my Ds back on after it froze. My guess is it was saving the data and then it froze can't be sure.
What people have done is they have managed to consistently do this boost ALL THE WAY through the entirety of every track, rarely or never driving straight at any time in any of the courses in Mario Kart DS. When you, a person who can't or doesn't want to snake, runs into a person who has managed to be able to snake through the entire track, online you pretty much have no chance at winning no matter how many red or blue shells you hit him with when/if you get them.
I never understood people who criticized the graphics for this game. Do they realize that the polygonal character models are an improvement over the two-dimensional sprites of MK64? The graphics for this game are actually quite good. Plus, I thought people who complained about snaking are just doing it b/c they can't snake themselves.
What I really enjoy about Mario Kart Super Circuit is that it's just fast gaming on the go. Sometimes you just don't have the time to really get invloved with a hand held game(although there are so many awesome games out there). I would rate the hand held Mario racing games in this order: Mario Kart DS, Mario Kart Super Circuit and Mario Kart 7. Sadly, not a huge fan of Mario Kart 7. Still think they should have called it Mario Kart 3DS and kept it as a hand held version, not a "console" type(which it tries to feel like)version of the series. Then again, we all have our own opinions, which is 100% totally understandable.
Best wishes Mark. Alcoholism ain't easy but I know you can get through it. Your videos helped me through some difficult times, I hope this comment can do the same for you. Best of luck buddy.
This game controls better than the Wii version imo. I dont know what they were thinking with that Manual/Automatic drift crap. The DS version gives you complete control over ur drift boost
Oh yes, the DSi. I have one, the navy color. Loved it. Best DS design ever. I got my DSi before the XL version, but I really don't care about the size :)
Damn, I wish I still had it. This game's excellent! In fact, I liked it more than Mario Kart Wii, which I still have. And I'm sorry, but I found Super Circuit to be terrible.
Risky Boots welcome159ify Some handheld games are better than console games. With that being said, Super Circut isn't terrible, but it's not the best Mario Kart game. #opinions
didn't they cut the wifi server for mario kart ds cuz when i go wifi it wont work at all. after the games has been out since 2006, are the severs still working for mario kart ds?

So much nostalgia...
God, I feel old.
BitzCommsMain Geez, if you think you're old, then I'm in real trouble since my friends were all playing Super Circuit for the GBA
BitzCommsMain Your not the only one who feels that way. I'm 19, by the way.
Best DS game, hands down.
Sendy Lie Easily
Yes.

Has anyone tried playing this game only looking at the bottom screen?
jes
DaHomieJoel who hasn't lol
I do its actually how I play the game.
y is it whenever i see a review of any mario kart, no one is power sliding. ALWAYS power slide.
at least he powerslid in the double dash review
I love watching old cgr videos
I am a beast at this game. I used to make people quit constantly.
I do the same thing too.
thats because you smell like old work socks...
Darren Davenport LOL
after watching this review the question that remains is..
Mark, do you even drift?
Matteo Ferrazzi 97788v vb
ah this takes me back...that intro music...yessss
"leave no beer behind" you sir are a true unique master of words , a high class philosopher . Bravo
Leave no beer behind, I love it 😂😂😂
Would it be cool if they made a Mario kart movie
Cameron Myers LOL wut ?
No...
How would that even work?
well they made a mario movie now so who knows 🤷🏽♂️
i love mario kart ds, its my favourite along with mk7. Its just great.

I wonder what movie Mark is mentioning at the beginning of the review.

Super circuit got boring quick. This one was much like the n64 version. thus why this one is 10X better
Mario Kart 64 sucks, though I agree that Mario Kart DS is superior to Mario Kart Super Circuit in most aspects.
***** +Shawn Sage OPINIONS! YOU BOTH HAVE OPINIONS!

This is actually the first Mario Kart game I ever played. I've been playing all the games since (besides Mario Kart 8 Deluxe).

The contant use of the infamous Blue Shell by the CPU players is the reason the newer Mario Kart games are so hard to play nowadays! :P

this game holds it's value extremely well.....still sells for full retail price at stores and ebay.
You refuse to powerslide. You got me wondering, can you get better times without it, or is it just not your thing?
Now this one I only played a couple of times around 2007 or 2008 so my memory is very cloudy on it. I see this one was the first to have a lot of crazy weapons like that blooper ink, the bullet, and the ghost.

Best DS Game I've Ever Played And I Still Have It
I definitely prefer this Mario Kart to Super Circuit, but I think that the drifting is slightly unbalanced, and the battle modes, unless you're playing with friends over wireless, is not very good.
+YLW Pyro Drifting is crazy unbalanced, to the point where people pick characters that have the best drifting just so they can drift over and over throughout each track and receive continuous speed boosts. Definitely a broken mechanic.
+solitarylonewolf yeah, drifting was pretty broken in this game now that I think about it, but I still had fun.
I had some good times playing it online. I was nearly unbeatable on rainbow road, haha. It just kinda sucks when you lose to some skeleton koopa troopa who just chain-drifts his way to first place and nobody else can catch up.
+solitarylonewolf Yeah, I had that happen to me more than once. There were some tracks where you could literally drift and chain the boosts endlessly.
I remember playing this game for days on end and when i finally earned triple star on the the race courses i left the game in the hotel.
Mario Kart DS and New Super Mario Bros. are 2 games that definitely do the best time as a portabale game, they're perfect when on a break, bus etc...
trying to pick which Mario Kart you like the most, is like trying to choose which one of your children you love the most
I liked this game a little, mainly because I got a used version of the game and everything was beaten and unlocked so I was like, "Oh..." And didn't know what the hell to do.
No mention of the different karts of each character? I've only played older MK titles with one kart per character. Seems like something worth talking about in some more detail.
Playing this at school was total madness!
I remember how much I played this game with my family and how much I played it online. Good times...
@littlefishkid actually the bullet bill is better and cant be hit by a star it also cant be beaten by a lightning bolt, homing shell, star, banana. lets see about that whats ur mkds friend code?
is there any need for name calling? i love the classic game room but i think there are alot of really good games that they are missing out on..
MKDS and MKWii are definitely the best in my opinion
+Robo Stuff wat bout 8?
8 was fun when it got out, but got boring after awhile
+Robo Stuff but it has better graphics and i kinda like the multiplayer morw than in mkwii
mk double dash was the best one mate
Israél Golz maybe idk unfortenetly i never got a chance to play it.
"You should be able to beat the crap out of whoever hit you with that shell...in fact you can when your friend is sitting right next to you" - LOLED
20 or 30 bucks? MKDS was $34.99 up until the 3DS came out and then some
I never got the hang of Super Circuit. But I do love me some MK DS.
I am very interested on what you will think of mario kart double dash for the nintendo gamecube. i never thought much of it at first but i recently revisited it, and ive been playing a lot of super mario kart recently and they really tryed to do something really different. when you get the chance, check it out, its definatley worth it.

Perhaps not missing out on as much as haven't gotten around to reviewing yet.
Ahh, memories. I still play it with my friends now, even.
Woah!
My guess is it was saving the data and then it froze can't be sure.
why did they take off boo as an item on mario kart wii? i used to steal bullet bills in 3rd place
This is a real fun game. Especally Online W.F.C. where you can play 3 other opponents, and yourself on the D.s. from any where around the world.
What people have done is they have managed to consistently do this boost ALL THE WAY through the entirety of every track, rarely or never driving straight at any time in any of the courses in Mario Kart DS. When you, a person who can't or doesn't want to snake, runs into a person who has managed to be able to snake through the entire track, online you pretty much have no chance at winning no matter how many red or blue shells you hit him with when/if you get them.
mario kart super circut was my first ever mario kart game back in 2001 when i was like 3 or 4
Still playing MKDS
I never understood people who criticized the graphics for this game. Do they realize that the polygonal character models are an improvement over the two-dimensional sprites of MK64? The graphics for this game are actually quite good. Plus, I thought people who complained about snaking are just doing it b/c they can't snake themselves.
dude i love this game..i unlocked all characters w/o cheats including R.O.B.
and all tracks
5: 53 super mario kart stage
8:15 mario kart 64 stage
good old memories
"Mario Kart DS" is the game I vote to have the best music in the MK series. :D

I haven't played this in about 1-2 years but I got. When I get my 3ds I will play it
Its tha Game Room!! You're awesome Mark!
@ufomies There isn't any automatic mode
which one is better Mario Kart DS or Mario Kart 7?
@Cecilink60 .. noP double screen.. look on wikipedia.. btw.. In germany they sell it under that name..
Mario360: You can play GBA games on the bottom screen too. You just need to change it in DS options
Best wishes Mark. Alcoholism ain't easy but I know you can get through it. Your videos helped me through some difficult times, I hope this comment can do the same for you.
Best of luck buddy.
where did you find that mark has bottle issues?
are you talking about the movie electric dreams? thats the one where the computer composes its own music and shit but develops a mind of its own
Hmm, no mention of Mario Kart: Double Dash on GameCube. If you haven't tried it, you should.
I'm not sure how MK Wii compares to it, however.
You can drive WITH the bottom screen too... :D
Wow I gotta get that version. My current favorite version is Double Dash on Gamecube
Bonus points for mentioning porter.
#opinions
@Yoshifan444 It's basically Super Mario Kart on a handheld. Nothing wrong with it, just hasn't aged particularly well.
@extremecool2003 thanks in balloon battle u use the mic thing right
I know. I still have it to this day. Really fun, I still have my lime green DS Lite! And of course, I have a aqua blue 3DS.
This is honestly my favorite Mario Kart, and all-time favorite DS game. :)
Me and my friends played it in the back of the class with our books up
I prefer this style of video as apposed to the style he does now.
Yea, Super Mario Kart's soundtrack is amazing, especially for its time.
Are you going to review mario kart double dash for the gamecube
For reviewing handheld games, you really should check out an emulator.... it makes life a lot easier!
How did you get 3 karts on Luigi and Yoshi. Because mine only has 2????
@ZeeM wow you think its good having only those 3 games?i have all mario karts
@GTAmaniacs23 Why are you comparing Mario Kart and Grand Theft Auto? They are two completely different games.
I just found this game on a sale for 10$ and bought 2 of them... REALLY NICE... one was for the 3ds and the other one was for the DSi.....
Baby Park is a track from the gamecube version.
Front mounted guns? If that's what you want, check out Crash Tag Team Racing
peragutt.....I unlocked up to 7 karts, plus, CGR, you should make a vid with you playing mario kart wfi, say, who's your fav character?
I like this game and Mario Kart 7.
I have this game and it is fun. I use daisy a lot as my character.
This game was basically my life when it first came out xD
I still to this day have a lot of world records in this game because of snaking and all the shortcuts that I knew in the game
So unbalanced
I know it was really unbalanced
didn't they cut the wifi server for mario kart ds cuz when i go wifi it wont work at all. after the games has been out since 2006, are the severs still working for mario kart ds?
