When they were younger, we would go to another nearby farm for an annual Labor Day reunion. When they were younger they would “daisy chain“ to touch and electric fence or leap across from bale to bale. Once they threw a chicken in the kitchen of the farmhouse when we were all out at the picnic. As a dad, I loved all of these antics as much or more than they did.

If I had to bet I’d say the kayaker slapped a swarm of hatching/mating willow flys. Other than completely covering everything from trees to houses near a river or creek they are absolutely harmless. In the deep south usually late may to June they hatch by the millions mate then die . (Probably elsewhere too)If I remember correctly its a 24 hour life cycle or shorter. All of us anglers are happy when the flys swarm that means the fish are in overdrive eating their fill before the annual feast is over. Swatting a branch will load the water down with flys and attract nearly every species of fish from tiny to huge. The smaller fish come for the fly’s and the big fish come for the small fish. When you see em it’s time to hit the water!Tight lines everyone!
