The day I got it, my hands were shaking like xmas morning as I pulled GET BACK from the box. 50 years of bootlegs and searching. To finally hold I t in my hands was almost surreal. The only letdown was the label. It's says GET BACK. THE 1969 GLYN JOHNS MIX. yeah well we know that. Bu tthats not the name. It should read GET BACK, period. But as this guy's said, Apple doesn't consult the fans. They should.

  • @deepredson

My thoughts on the ''wrong Get Back mix'' being issued are these:
I've been a minor producer and a happy engineer for centuries (so it feels), and made my own checks track by track from the old underground boots (69 & 70) of Glyn Johns' mixes and, once re-sequenced and pitch-corrected, compared them to each of the 2021 offerings. All are identical.
Even the 'For You Blue' comment on it being the re-recorded vocal version is not true. (re-recorded Jan 8th 1970, with the 'Elmore James has nothing on this..' etc). This version is found on L.I.B. Naked and the L.I.B. album itself. Very different from 69 & 70 mixes [which are identical].
I worked with the editor of Beatles Monthly for many years on this sort of thing.
Removing/repairing glitches or improving sound quality by remastering has never counted as a different mix, has it?
This is just a case of using the best post-mastering available.
My sincerest good wishes to all.
There are always some of us that believe in fairydust - and why not?
    Barty

I agree entirely. Its very obvious that the vocal overdubs are what we hear on let it be and naked, and the 69 and 70 mixes are identical. It's about time that people with oscilloscopes should turn them off and listen to the music instead. My only small gripe is that they mixed out the feedback in Teddy boy

I've been digging a pygmy for almost 52 years. I just love the energy and spontaneity of the "Let It Be" album. I remember seeing a big stack of both the "Let It Be" and "Yellow Submarine" albums in the Woolworth's bargain basement in 1975. They were selling them for 99 cents. I bought 5 copies of each and handed them out to friends. I will get this. Anything related to the Liverpudlian moptops I want. I have all of their albums including the American ones like "Beatles '65" and "Something New."

For me, I have 2 issues with buying the box set. 1: The price, which is why I've not bought any of these new deluxe special box sets (although I am tempted by a few and will probably get them eventually). 2: There's stuff I've heard on bootlegs for years that I'd love to have better quality versions of, but they aren't included. Based on the tracklisting, it seems they focused more on alternate versions of songs that were on the original album rather than including all the songs that didn't make it. That was always the interesting stuff for me. Songs like Madman, Suzy's Parlour, Watching Rainbows and various others, George did a bunch of Bob Dylan songs acoustic but on the bootlegs it's buried in everyone else just chattering away so it would have been cool to have those cleaned up so we could actually hear George.

@@gettinhungrig8806 A Yoko vocal would have been the ultimate insult when there's so many Beatles songs they left off. As for what was said in the video about John, I think they're just his opinions, not meant to be taken as gospel. John by his own admission wasn't the strongest musician in the group and was mostly playing bass on those songs because they wanted to keep it as live as possible and Paul was on piano, George was on lead, so John was left with the bass. It has also been well documented that John was a bit standoffish as he felt the others weren't as accepting of Yoko being there all the time as they'd liked. John doesn't play on I Me Mine at all. The earlier versions he decided he'd rather dance with Yoko and the album version he wasn't even there. So there is some truth to it.

I balked at the price originally but thought the set was worth the money. I don't think they'd be able to get the rights to Dylan songs much less any of the 1950s chestnuts they rolled out. I liked the alt songs because they picked the best material for those two discs. The bootlegs were always a tough slog. This has material I'll want to go back to for years.

Highly recommended for Beatles fans. Quibbles: the book should have the title info on the spine; the EP is superfluous; and where is the rooftop concert? A proper EP at 7", with a real picture sleeve, that included the concert would have made this set perfect. It's a quibble since I'm pretty sure those recordings are coming.

Another great video Andrew. I will pass on this box set personally as I have on the Pepper, The Beatles and Abbey Road boxes. The reason being is that having the original copies of the the LP, the 87 cd and the 2009 cd, I can't find a good enough reason to keep on buying the same albums when I can just stream the new content on Spotify. I rarely listen to new mixes or sessions more than a couple of times out of curiosity anyway. What the Beatles approved back in the day sonically has always been good enough for me.

I've ordered both the CD and the Vinyl set. One thing that disappointed me immediately was overlap. I think we all know that Abbey Road tracks were being worked upon at the time of this album. I would have preferred more from the Nagra tape reels rather than early incarnations of Abbey Road material, which should have been kept apart for the Abbey Road box set instead. Why haven't the upbeat versions of "Two of Us", Paul's "Back Seat of my Car", John's, "Child of Nature" (Jealous Guy) and even better rehearsal takes of George's "All things Must Pass" been included? Although some of this material might be slightly fragmented, it would have been more appreciated. I'm spoilt I guess, as I have a copy of the Vigotone "30 Days" bootleg. The omissions of alternative and more interesting material was an opportunity missed from this set.

I definitely agree with your conclusion, Andrew. And I do feel a little put out that, as a CD buyer, I don't get the full-sized Glyn Johns LP. That would look so much better than the CD version. Also, I, too, wondered why they simply reproduced the EP on CD instead of putting those tracks as "extras" on one of the others. It would have been nice to have a "proper" cover for the EP. Perhaps use one of the singles covers from the time? That might have justified the separate CD. All that said, I don't know if these issues would rise to paying another $100+ for the LP set, especially since the source is digital as with the CDs. The music is what ultimately matters, and it sounds great to my ears.
Excellent review. Thank you! Looking forward to next week... 😀

I think the missing concert disc is a valid criticism. It’s something most people have wanted. If it’s only the film version without an accompanying vinyl sold stand alone, I can only speak for my anecdotal Disney+ experience, but I’ve yet to find a way to make it play on my duel 1229 and stack I’ve spent years putting together (and that’s my preferred way to enjoy music). Sure I can run it through the old 5.1 with the tv off, or even run the audio through my receiver (a remarkably inconvenient proposition that doesn’t seem to be worthwhile).
Don’t get me wrong I’m excited to see the concert in full, but the bits on the old laser disc are the best part of the let it be film (imo). It will be amazing to get to see everything remastered and complete.
In the end of the film series doesn’t coincide with a proper release of the concert on physical audio media I believe it’s as valid a criticism as any. I guess I’d understand it not being a valid criticism for you personally if you don’t care about having a nice vinyl copy of the performance, but if that’s was important to you and it’s not there are you supposed to send Apple a thank you card for Christmas for specifically excluding it? So that even after spending all this money on all these sets maybe they can release yet one further set that negates this one entirely?
All in all it’s an amazing set that I’ve enjoyed completely. People have got things so wrong these days. A criticism doesn’t mean the entire thing is garbage or of no value. It means people I’ve discussed this with, and I all wanted something that isn’t there. Apple even set it up as a possibility with the marketing for the film and the way they’ve handled all the recent releases.
It’s great! I’ve always loved this album and film (maybe ranking Beatles for Sale as my “worst” Beatles record, but does that mean I don’t love that album? Nope, but it does mean I haven’t listened to Mr Moonlight in over a decade). Could this set have included something that would make many fans happy and serve to make this release feel definitive (at least in its tracks if not audio preference/quality) like the recent White Album/self titled release? I believe so.

When I heard it for the first time I geniunely thought they accidentally uploaded the wrong file or something, which is a shame because I love the Hammond organ in this mix. I was also expecting to hear Let It Be's original ghost solo from take 27a somewhere. BTW going out on a limb here, but to me the let it Be version on the Glyn Johns album minus the banter before & after is the best version I have heard & could have been worthy to have been put on the original final album.

Ok let’s talk about me my uncle and the album. First me I was born 1973 After they broke up. The Beatles became one of my top 10 bands and artist of all time. My set up for listening is a bunch of bluetooth speakers a bar speaker for my tv with 5.1 surround sound. I also have Apples air pods. I don’t buy cds much any more specially if there a streamable version. I have a subscription to Spotify. I am so happy they got all the mixes in the super deluxe set minus the Blu-ray Disc. I love all the remixes the 2021 and 1969-70. I could listen a lot to them and do jam to them in the car. The song as different takes except for a few I like to jam to but the rest will only be listened to a few times a year as history of what happened in the studio. The set is very fun to listen to and my son likes the band too. He won’t care so much for different takes. He is only 18. Also I can’t weight for the movie as I only had a stolen copy I got from Lime Wire a file sharing app in the early 2000 were you stole album copy’s for free. The Let It Be movie I have on a media stick only works if you play it straight threw. If you fast forward it it has glitches. So I happy for what I got. As for my uncle for helping me out a lot in my life and to say thank you I got him the cd supper deluxe set with book as a gift. Why the cds. He as a fan is worthy of the records and had been since he got the first album in the USA when it came out as a kid, but not his record player. Also I wanted him to have the blue-ray disc. He first opened the set up and was so suprize I spent the money on such a nice set he knew it not cheep. Second it his favorite band of all time and loves anything by them. So after he opened it he said always wanted the album mixed the one from 1969 and 70s. Second he listen to the blue-ray disc stereo mix said it Beautiful and rich sounding. As he listens more to the set I get more on what he likes about it. He also said the book is so good. He did say if he was buying it he get the cds as it more convenient to listen to with out the fuss. So from two happy Beatles fans we love this set. I just got one suggestion. Just get a copy of it in your choice of formates. Then put it on and listen to it like you would of as a kid. I am happy to just listen to the songs. I think comparing each albums to the same album but on a different pressing or formate and comparing them loses some of the fun. I know we don’t want a bad recording but at some point once you got a good one just get into the music.

I have the 2009 CD and feel it is good enuf. A lot of Let It Be was recorded live, and there is just so much additional fidelity that can be rung out of the tracks. I also feel like it is not a strong enough Beatles record for me to get something that's slightly different. I am waiting for Revolver CD remix, which sounds like it could use a fresher mix. I have the White Album and Abbey Road in the new remixes, and while interesting, do not really move the needle like, say, the remix of All Things Must Pass (which I know many people hate).

Great review if these two box sets. I was originally going to buy just the cd bios set to get Blu-ray. Ultimately I decided to buy both because the vinyl box set includes much better packaging (in particular GJ’ let it be vinyl). I have reasonable BluRay and 4K tv. And really enjoyed contents of Blu-ray which does have some visual content. I really liked Stereo mid and 5.1 mixes - I was though disappointed with Atmos version which added little. I am hoping that Disney will release 4K version of six hour documentary with a really good immersive 5,1 sound mix - particularly for roof top concert.
I really liked 4 track ep too.
I imagine that Apple will next look at revolver and rubber soul for upgrades. I note that Criterion are releasing new 4K UHD of hard days night in 2022. That should be excellent.

They could have saved room in the CD box by combining both sessions discs into one 73 minute disc, and adding the EP tracks onto the Get Back disc.
I would have also added the original 1970 mix to Disc 1, for CD buyers who may not already have a copy. And I would have made sure the 12" book scales down to a 5" version, so that the box set could fit on the same shelf with a CD collection.

I’ve enjoyed the second Glenn Johns cut of the album for years, and it’s nice to have a slightly cleaner version than my old CD bootleg (that looks identical to the one shown here). I enjoy a lot in this version of the album. It’s a small gripe but the one thing that I really miss is George’s guitar is turned down in For You Blue, but does nic the added studio chatter in John lap steel solo; which I’m mostly indifferent on.. but that is one of George’s subtle beautiful sounding guitar songs. It’s simple, but a favorite of mine. Bringing that rhythm guitar up a bit was one of Specters positive additions

I wasn't too jazzed about this box when it was announced (after all, Let It Be never was among my favorite Beatles albums), but the thing is, I'm a diehard nutcase fan who needs EVERYTHING. So of course I got it. And I was THRILLED when I heard it - because the sound (except that mix of "I, Me, Mine" -- and I was thinking the exact same thing: digital noise) is spectacular! In terms of content, the "white" album box is my favorite of the 50th anniversary boxes, but for sound quality, this one easily wins it for me.
The thing is, this came out shortly after The Beach Boys' Feel Flows set, a 5-CD box (well, not really a box but more of a book-with-CDs-inside-it) in which they used just about every usable second of CD space. I think the list price on both the Let It Be and Feel Flows sets was the same. So yeah, for five CDs, we were getting 3 CDs worth of material. Also, the folks at Brother KNOW what the fans want. There are plenty of folks on the inside who do reach out to fans, which is why their more recent archival releases and year-end copyright extension releases have been so stellar. They know what the fans like, and they know how to push the fans' buttons. Apple, on the other hand...they don't seem to have any fan outreach at all. Their attitude seems to be: "It's The Beatles. People will gobble up anything Beatles." And just like the computer company called Apple, the Beatles' Apple does not reach out to find out what their consumers want: they TELL their consumers what they want.
Now, I don't think the rooftop concert ever was considered as part of the set -- I mean, does the target audience as a whole really want to sit through just the audio of, oh, three performances of "Get Back," two performances of "Don't Let Me Down," etc.? But my thought is that the box was conceived first for vinyl, and it makes sense how it's arranged: one 12-inch disc for the new version of Let It Be, another for the Glyn Frankenstein album, two 12-inchers for the rehearsals and recording sessions, and an EP. (Although I was surprised to learn it's a 12-inch EP instead of a 7-inch.) I'm thinking that they basically took each record and turned it into a CD. It's not the first time the Apple suits did this to The Beatles: all of Let It Be...Naked [still my favorite of the various lineups to listen to the Get Back / Let It Be material] could have fit on one CD (but it worked well as a 12-inch and 7-inch on vinyl), and the "red" album could have fit on one CD instead of a (list price) $32 two-CD set.

It occurs to me that from now on every Beatle song can be remixed and then released many times. Every time they can boost the vocals or boost any instrument or even add sounds from tracks that were left off the original releases. In his way EMI will make a fortune.
What EMI needs to do is release all Beatle songs in the future on a new medium that has ALL the isolated channels on it so it is in effect an exact copy of the MASTER TAPE. Together with the launch of a new player for this new medium the listener can play back these songs either in the default way they were originally released OR the user can boost any track with a mixing table included with the player. So in effect the user can pay back any way they want and listen to any isolated track or boost tracks etc.
Listen to bass track only or drums only or vocals only. Then if you add AI you can isolate parts that are on one track .
I wouldnt pay for any new releases based on new mixes BUT I would pay for both all Beatle songs released with all individual tracks accessable to the listener and the player needed.

hello again, I have withdrawn my post of this afternoon, as I was - I think now - too harsh with the LP box...
It is what it is: the track "I Me Mine" on the EP has strange noises on the left channel, that's what everyone I have talked to today hears. But: it is NOT a pressing error! I have heard the said track digitally again (Amazon Music HD), and there is this disturbance also, just not so strong, have probably paid too little attention at the first hearing... So, I guess it's definitely not a pressing error!
Ringo's cymbals on the Glyn Johns Mix LP are very clanging on the left channel on side A, especially in "Dig A Pony", but that is certainly also on the master. So - after all! After listening through it again, I have to say, yes, I'm calmed down, all is well! Or- not well, but it is how it is! And it's fine!
As for the tracks of the Glyn Johns Mix, yes, that's certainly interesting and a question of how that could happen or why Apple did it that way!
So, all the best and enjoy Let it Be!

I had the opportunity to see the rooftop concert and Peter Jackson’s live link up at an I Max theater while vacationing in Florida last January. My wish is that they would have shown the roof top concert without the cut aways. The audio was breathtaking and loud!!! I’ll probably never hear it as good as I did at that I Max theatre.
As far as the Get Back box set, I have the CD version and think the 5.1 surround mix is the best out of all the Giles Martin surround mixes. It’s a awesome. Usually, the surround mix is interesting but not my go to listen. On Get Back, it’s my preferred listen.
I’m disappointed that they didn’t include the complete rooftop concert without cut aways on the Blu Ray disc. It would have been the extra icing on an already sweet cake.

I've listened to the first side of Get Back online so far. It feels so lonely. Seems that Glyn Johns was going for something more true to the film rather than a commercial release, and it's clear why it was never issued.
For me, "Naked" was the first time I heard this material in a way that felt like a complete album that was up to their standards, and I'm reluctant to buy a different version that will tear that away. Other reasons reluctant to buy it: (a) Giles Martin; (b) no rooftop concert; (c) one of the discs is only 4 tracks??

This release is notable for what is still missing and the fact that both Glynn johns mixes should have been issued. Having had them booth for nearly 30 years i believe i understand this moot p[oint. Where is Black Dog Blues/ Not Fade Away, the full re-make of Hold Me Tight, Mailman Don’t Bring Me No More Blues to name but a few, also Isn’t It A Pity, . However having them in my personal stack makes me realise just how much there is. IT SCORES FOR PRESENTATION, BUT LOSES ON THE CONTENT. In other words you win on the percentages, but lose on the bonuses. I have put my own Get back album together by splitting the studio set to the live set. There is no studio chatter just the recordings, and that sounds much much better.cay la vie!!
