I'm the FX artist from Uncharted: Golden Abyss. I remember having big chats with other devs about the interrupting elements. Everyone knows about the tutorials in games, but this game had a mode where if you came across a pile of ripped paper, you were forced to assemble an image with touch controls. THIS HAPPENED DURING COMBAT! It's been 11 years since I worked on that title, but it still bothers me.

@@RetroBirdGaming For us 20-30 year olds that care about old systems like a PS2/Xbox/GameCube/Dreamcast and older for sure that do look back at Atari to N64 generations, no idea about PS3/360/Wii gen onwards as they are used to the same games for a third gen in a row of graphics and open world and multiplayer and such being the same and doubled down to be worse, the few that played an NES (not me only through the Wii U VC or Indies mimmicking but many others sure did I assume), the types that research and respect them for sure.
If our kids care will be the tricky part I feel because the 'judge someone if they don't play trendy game or has a default skin especially' is a problem I think at least on podcasts I've heard if they have a default skin which to me is just hilariously dumb to be judged by. Even then I never knew if with PC wallpapers if Crysis 3 was enough in high school then something else to 'blrnd' in. I thought the game was ok but I wasn't going to put Cod like a generic.
If similar to sports expectations just gaming instead these days that I can only guess as no idea what school is like for primary/middle/elementary and high school these days as it's been a few years
Whatever percentage we are I'd very small I feel but hopefully enough to keep going than the rest in our generation (too caught up with mobile games or live services and don't care either about games as a full package, better ideas, and so on elements to them or were never into games at all or expect like movies particular themes and elements in them) as much as the generation after us that we can't rely on.

When the save point before a boss is also before the unskippable cutscene before the boss, so you have to rewatch it every time you die and need to try again. That and when one of the discs for a multidisc game gets too scratched to read and it isn't even disc one, so you're well into a playthrough before you realize it. Original Playstation games were pretty bad in that regard.

I hate rubberbanding in racing games, or when enemy drivers catch up to you in a way that would be impossible otherwise. I don't understand the argument that "it makes the game more interesting", it just makes it more frustrating and it feels like I'm not being rewarded properly for racing well.

      OMG F-Zero for this!
I read it wasn't really to make the game more interesting btw, but it was a technical limitation, because it was impossible to keep track of all the pods/cars along the race course. Cars could be tracked if they were in view, and otherwise they were just kept artificially right behind the player.

It doesn't happen super often but it seems like every time it does I am in the middle of a game and end up losing a bunch of progress and potentially damaging my console. I got tired of it so I recently bought a little back up generator that will give me enough time to save and power off whenever it happens. Retro gaming: when someone turns the console off when you're trying to keep your game that doesn't have battery saves paused while you're gone.
Modern gaming: The stars align, you've got a big chunk of time to game. You fire up that game you've been waiting to play, and the console prompts a 5GB+ update.

Great topic! When I was a kid, my parents sometimes would drag me to places I didn't want to go while I was in the middle of a game. Many times, it was so immediate, that I wasn't able to save my progress and they wouldn't let me leave the game powered on while we were gone. Another one that was common for NES owners was actually getting older games to actually load! My cousins and I would blow into the cartridge, wiggle it around and keep resetting the console until we finally got the game running!
As an adult, one of the major pains is just controllers that wear out too quickly. Either the control stick is too loose, the controller no longer calibrates or even some of the buttons stick. Some these are relatively easy fixes such as cleaning, while others are more in-depth fundamental design problems. The worst is when you're in the middle of an online game and the controller malfunctions (causing you to lose). 😒

Sunlight! I grew up with our Mega Drive/PlayStation in a corner of the top floor of our house, which had four huge skylight windows on sloped ceilings and a standard window on the back wall. There would constantly be natural light flooding into the room, which was a nightmare for gaming, especially as games got darker with the start of stealth games and survival horror. Now I'm an adult, and I can arrange my furniture however I want, making sure the TV doesn't face the window is top priority whenever I move somewhere new, and it's always at the expense of practicality.

Probably the thing that annoys me the most is a lack of quick saves. I know it's not very retro of me, but I kind of hate when I don't have the ability to save in that moment in case I need to stop what I am doing. I'll add that when it's a short game that can be beaten in one sitting like an arcade style thing, this doesn't really bother me that much, so I guess it only applies to longer games that exceed say 3-5 hours.

After everyone was sleeping, I started up my game only to find the batteries in the controller were flat. Frustrated, I sighed and opened up my drawer to grab some batteries out of my secret pack of 38 double A batteries. I bought and hid my own pack for exactly this reason... Now you go to wait 5 + hours because games are huge & the average person doesn't have 1-3 TB for their internet. They have something like 50-150 mbps. If you don't have a PS5 you ain't reaching top speeds. It'll be somewhere from 50-90 with a PS4 depending of you have that wired or not. Games are like 100gb & more now & on average something like 60 gb. Which takes again 5 + hours to wait just to play a game.

In an attempt to preserve my progress data I placed (what I thought at the time) was my custom car data on a separate memory card. When it came time to make room, I checked nervously to make certain that I wouldn’t delete the wrong save file! The custom car data seemed to be the only one I could part with, turns out, it was the progress I had deleted! I lost my Diamond Cup data on the highest difficulty setting! It was a tragedy! It drove me to the nut house, _which is where I’m currently writing this from._

As a left handed person one thing always drove me nuts in gaming since the mid 90s: the lack of customizable controls.
Was always being used to aim with the left thumb/stick (N64) and therefore was really not able to play games like XIII on the Gamecube or Dishonored/Singularity on the XBox360.
Today most games still do not get left hander control options right. At least the console system now allows for custom button remapping…
And remember those few NES games that had jumping on the B-Button…
    unplayable…😂😂🆙

The part about controllers running out of batterypower hits hard.
I remember when I first played Demons of Asteborg I was playing very poorly and I wasted most of the money I gained on extra lifes. So when I got the the castle my character was sort of underpowerd. I kept failing so hard I was already furious when the battery in my M30 needed recharching. I was sooooo determined to beat the game I picked up a wired Mega Drive controller and kept going. Don't get me wrong. The Mega Drive 6 button controller is a fine controller but the M30 has a better formfacter, better buttons and the D-pad feels soooo much smoother. So going back to an inferior feeling controller drove me nuts.
I did not beat Demons of Asteborg on that day but I did end up beating the castle stage.

A lot of modern games have these scenes where characters are explaining something to you while you're walking towards a goal. And almost, without fail, if you just walk at a normal speed you'll wind up at a loading screen that completely cuts that dialog off with no way to ever hear it again. It just seems like a weird design choice. I appreciate the games where characters pause and say "Ah, I'll get into that later" and follow up with it -- God of War is a good example.

To my wife the gaming bar stool drives her nuts. For me it is pausing the game for that interruption & then unpausing the game & then you miss something or you die right away. A big new one right now is the Stadia dying. I know most people didn't care for it, but I could play new games on my phone while I was on break at work. I thought it was great.
The dying batteries are also a turd and a half. My entire living room is connected to my Xbox. So, everyone in the house will use my Xbox, and not plug the controllers back in to charge. I come home from work, and I'm ready to infuriate myself with the Mega Man X collection, and low battery.
Then, there is the king of all gripes: Children. When kids ask to play a game, and you're like, "Sure, buddy here you go! Just don't load my file!" and then they load your file, waste all you're good items, and leave you stranded in a constant loop of doom because they went somewhere they weren't supposed to and autosaved you into oblivion.

I said something and my friend holding the controller spun around very quickly, and while doing so pulled the controller cord so tight it pulled the N64 and the TV off the tallboy Dresser. The N64 hit the ground first, then the TV fell onto the n64. The corner of the tv hit the side of the n64 breaking the WHOLE side of the n64 off. The n64 worked perfectly fine after that (looked like garbage but it worked) but that TV was so screwed, the screen was messed up and it made a high pitch sound. I miss when consoles where super strong

    1. Patching the game before you can play it - I mean, come on! I can think of hundreds of cases when I came from work to play some games and I needed to install a big a$$ update before even loading the game.
    2. Game crashes when you saved 30 min before it happens. In this situation, I m usually just giving up on the game and moving to do something else

One thing that reallydrives me nuts while gaming is sucking at games especially ones where the character can die. Just the feeling of frustration and stress wondering why I'm stuck at a particular level of a game. A close would be too much tutorials, tutirials aren't bad but a lot are too long and aren't skipable which just wastes time during replays. Maybe grinding in games could also be included.
For more physical object interruptions. There's bugs flying around and cockroaches both of which unwanted. Then there's controller batteries, kinda drove me nuts when the rechargable AA batteries on my Wiimotes were being inconsistemt and randomly dying out while playing, which was due to them being old and worn out. Makes me miss wired controllers haha.

As a kid my parents would call me for dinner or because they needed my help outside working on something & even back then I didn't mind because food, or sure I'll help out but let me finish what I'm doing. That was not the expectation, it's like my parents (primarily my mom) didn't understand I couldn't just stop what I was in the middle of & I'd come once I get to the next natural stopping point (save point in JRPG, best the next castle in Mario World, failed the level then went back to a save spot in DKC), which resulted in my still to this day reaction of "what?" when someone interrupts me gaming. I've gotten better now that I'm older, but I've also found that a lot of times I'd get interrupted & expected to drop what I was doing which is just selfish & unfair of the person doing the interrupting.
Luckily these days it doesn't happen very often & I usually have a good idea of how long I have for gaming time, my wife is great at coming & mentioning if she wants to do something, but she means when I'm done & most modern games are great at allowing me to stop whenever I want. Heck even retro games usually have great stopping points because they were designed for either one big play session (I play these on Emulator nowadays) or short bursts of fun.
Getting into the weeds on this though, my most recent driving me nuts was when I was playing Resident Evil Remake recently. The save system having limited saves due to ink ribbons really bothered me, mostly because I was being a bit too conservative with my saves. I really hate losing progress as I'm currently trying to work through a large backlog & having a limited number of times I can save on a game I've never played before was more annoying than a fun design choice. Seemed like life things would pop up right after I'd saved, but just after I'd been successful with best g a boss or performing something tricky & I didn't want to quite yet use another precious ink ribbon to save. I get why it was done & I think having that as a option in future games on hard difficulties is great, but it meant I couldn't play a half hour if I had that half hour free & needed to wait for bigger chunks of time & not have the ability to jump off & play something multiplayer with friends on the same system (was playing on ps5) if they happened to pop online (which is often).

I had to re-cap a Game Gear, completely rebuild my PC Engine Duo R, re-cap my Punisher arcade PCB, repair 2 of my PS2s, and repair the control panel on one of my CRT TVs... and then my OG Xbox stopped turning on (probably a leaky time keeper cap), one of my arcade cabinet monitors is taking forever to warm up and probably needs a re-cap, my Street Fighter II PCB c-board went out, and my freaking Ninja Baseball Batman PCB is on the fritz, and I honestly have no idea what is wrong with it.
