Arctic Chicago - Polar Vortex - drone footage

  • Polar Vortex brought extreme temperatures to Chicago along with beautiful icy landscapes. Dangerous temperatures reaching up to -50 F wind chills transformed Chicago river and lake Michigan to solid ice. Arctic Chicago was shot by Dji Mavic 2 Pro on Friday morning with 9F temperatures. Overnight fallen fresh snow covered all ice creating amazing and unique scenery. Chicago did not experienced so low Arctic temperatures in years setting new records in a lot of areas. I was not able to capture steaming lake due to low temperatures and drone safety but nature painted beautiful picture after all.
    Equipment used -
    DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone.

One of the rare times a city as large as Chicago can look almost completely abandoned. There was this stillness in the air that was beautifully haunting. Wonderful footage! 💙

Immigrants arriving 1963 in Chicago. Experienced such cold weather in the 60's. We had no such beautiful drone generated video and no RUclips. This winter is cold but Chicago has seen worse. Snow above car rooftop. No place to get all the snow fast. City paralized for days if not week.
We are now in Florida enjoy watching this video. Thanks. Excellent quality video.

Now that's a Chicago winter. Thanks for the video. The first time I heard Polar Vortex was in 2014 when on Monday...maybe Jan 6th, it was a high of minus 12 -without the wind chill. That whole year was a dud since the cold was so intense the summer was weak.

    • @chrisbiela

Thank you very much. Yes. There usually is a correlation between cold winter and following summer. I like when it is super cold in Chicago. It is healthier for us in my opinion.

Sitting here 4 years later, I’ve remembered how traumatic it was. I felt trapped and that it was a frozen hell. I’m now 13, living in California now makes me want to have the same thrill of living in such a weather shifting environment. Having experienced 2 tornadoes, one of many street flooding thunderstorms, and plus the mosquito bites that last weeks and cause the most severe itches I’ve ever felt. I don’t think I’m going back anytime soon.

If you don't own the right clothes or the heat isn't working, you need to find help right away.
The extreme cold and quick thaw is ruinous to vehicles and infrastructure. Just the other day, a bridge nearly collapsed when the steel supports failed.
Young children and the elderly are at high risk of frostbite.
But a healthy adult with a good coat can stay outside for hours. No problem.

Because Malaysia is near equator region and the climate is tropical rainforest, Malaysia,Singapore or Indonesia's temperature stays between 20 to 30 degree whole year. Countries above 23.5 degree latitude will face some sort of winter and in Europe which is situated above 30 degree latitude will face severe cold and even sometimes snow :) All these depend on Climate pattern and latitude. But unfortunately for polar vortex it's not normal, it's surely shows imbalance of higher stratosphere and overall wind pattern. :( Climate change is not hoax.

Weather anomaly's are more and more frequent all over the world and we (humans) are to blame. I do not know how this affects your country but the whole globe weather is changing drastically. Chicago has 4 seasons yearly with longer winter and summer, short spring and fall.
