Ilford Delta range is Ilford's ‘Professional’ range of films. This is versus their ‘Plus’ range of films which includes HP5, Pan F (which was in the very first WonderBox), FP4, etc.
The first Delta - Delta 400 - was introduced to the world in 1990, Delta 100 was launched in 1992, and Delta 3200 came in 1998.
In 1995 the formulation got an upgrade, with improved shadow detail and latitude.
The difference of Professional vs Plus is in the technology - the Professional range uses Core-Shell crystal technology to get minimal grain and maximum sharpness! Note that this is versus similar speed films - it’s easier to get small grain when the film is slower (the ISO is lower) so you’ve got to compare Delta 400 vs HP5 for example - or Delta 100 versus FP4 (ISO 125).
It also means that Delta 100 has the finest grain of the entire Delta range and the detail you’ll get is genuinely unbelievable. One of the customer reviews on site talked about needing to zoom in more and more on their HD monitor to try and find grain on a 35mm scan - and even when they found it they couldn’t be sure that it wasn’t the limits of their scanner instead of the film itself!
This gives your images a very clean look.
Exposure latitude is not quite as forgiving as the Plus range. This means you have to be more careful with getting the exposure correct in-camera - and it also gives a stronger contrast in the image. This isn’t going to be overwhelmingly contrasty, but it will be noticeable versus shooting with FP4.

Delta 100, especially in 120 rolls and 4x5 & 5x7 sheets, has always been a beautiful film for me. It holds detail in things like cloud highlights very well, especially combined with a developer like Pyrocat HD, known for helping keep the highlights.

Delta 100 is absolutely gorgeous. Maybe a tad too gorgeous sometimes and yes it’s difficult to find its grain even in Rodinal. I have shot it in 400 speed and find its grain to be more pleasing probably because you actually see grain 😀

I've used it in old 120 cameras such as the Ilford Sportsman, Ensigns and the like. and it has a much nicer more contrasty look than the FP / HP films. It really works well if it's over exposed slightly
I find I can't get on the FP4 / HP5 as well, but that just leaves those grades for them that appreciate it

Love this film, been looking for something that I can use as an everyday film and fine art. After trying dozens I finally broke down and bought a 100' roll and a box of 4x5 it is gorgeous grain if you can find it. I use an Epson 4870 flatbed and scan my 35 at 3200 dpi and the 4x5 at 900dpi. I know Ilford wants us to use DDX but I have used HC110 for years I process E at 6 minutes and rate the film at 50iso the negs are gorgeous thanks for the info. sure wish they would do another upgrade to enhance the shadows a tad better though.

Ah that is just brilliant that you have found a film you love! It is awesome to have your 'go to' film and once you have found a developing recipe you like, you are away! 🚀 Happy shooting! 📸

Please ask your friends at Ilford why we don't have a Delta 400 4x5 sheet film option, thanks.

Delta 100 is nice but why would anybody shoot any other 100 speed fine grain film when Fuji Acros II exist?

I enjoyed this Paul, thanks. The history parts are always very interesting to me. It's so much nicer having some tell you it as a story instead of reading it on Wikipedia! I shot a lot of Delta 100 last year in 120 format, just fun family snaps. I hope that you are not suggesting that Pan F, FP4 and HP5 are not 'professional' films. I started out with FP3 and HPS! That is not a typo, H P S.

I prefer the Delta 100 to the FP4. In my opinion prints from this film are sharper, crispy much more than the FP4.
FP4 is creamy and I don't like it.

Hi Paul! Found your video as a RUclips suggestion and glad to see your review of Ilford Delta 100. I am using the 120 version of this film to test a few old Kodak Brownie Hawkeye and Spartus 120 cameras. I wanted a B&W film with a low ISO that I believe will work in these old cameras with f16-ish and 1/50-ish second shutters. I have the first results and they are dreamy! See the latest 2 B&W Instagram posts on my account @anthony_plescia to see the Hawkeye results. Will have the Spartus 120 results shortly (this was a box camera made in Chicago, IL). Really like your film reviews so keep at it! Cheers from USA 🇺🇸! Anthony.
