The Bangles were always really underrated because they were pretty women making pretty music. Each and every one of the were skilled musicians. Susanne Hoffs is still playing great music. For bonus points, she looks twenty years younger than her 65 years.
She's older than Madonna but went for a clean lifestyle early. She also didn't try to continue to look like she was in her twenties by getting surgery unlike the former queen of pop,
She looked mid to late 20s from her actual 20s until around 40. Then she looked 30 for about 15 years. Now... yeah. She could pass for an attractive woman in her mid 40s. It's uncanny.
You say "pretty women making pretty music" yet you focus on how Hoffs looks now. Also, others putting her appearence down to lifestyle are simply naive. Why is it people in the entertainment industry "somehow" look 20 years younger than they are, yet others that aren't performers look their age, dispite having a clean lifestyle? It's not uncanny, it's surgery.
My favorite song they do. They took a classic and made it fit the soundtrack for 'Less Than Zero' perfectly. I like this version better than the original.
Sadly the movie was a mediocre attempt to bring one of the great novels of the 80s to life, but it ended up being just sad. Even Bret Easton Ellis said that other than Andrew McCarthy and Robert Downey Jr., there really wasn't anything to like about the movie - and he felt like it had nothing to do with the book. This song is one of the best things about the movie. (Actually the entire soundtrack is pretty good.)
@@jamesrawlins735it’s in my top 5 movie soundtracks. When I was switching from cassettes to CDs in the 80s, I think this was the second or third CD I bought. ❤
This is my go-to example of when doing a cover makes sense. They brought something new to the table, and in doing so vastly improved the original (in my opinion, no disrespect to Simon and Garfunkel.) Too many covers are of songs that were fine as is, and/or bring nothing new whatsoever - so what's the point? If you're going to remake something, let it be something that should have been great, but wasn't. And the Bangles knock this so far out of the park it's orbital. I absolutely LOVE this band...
All these women were talented musicians and beautiful in their own rights, but damn if you look up the term bedroom eyes you would see a picture of Susanna Hoffs giving her classic side-eye look. She was the crush of thousands of young(and many not-so-young) men. And she is still beautiful now ,well into her 60s.
Beth, it's only January and you have already won the best quote of 2025 with "These [Bangles] harmonies are so cool, it reminds me of Bulgarian folk choirs!"
Thanks, Beth -- this is one of the very few "re-make" songs that I think are actually better than the original ... such great harmonies & "rocked-up" version of S&G's... .. appreciate your reaction....
One of the few covers of anything I really enjoy. Honestly, the older I get the better the Bangles music sounds. I was impatiently waiting on Headbangers' Ball when they were at their peak. Unless Walk Like an Egyptian came on, because it was fun and silly and Susanna's eyes at 2:47.
I just want to point out those awesome guitar riffs are from Vicki Peterson. She’s probably the biggest influence to the Bangles’ sound. I only realised that after seeing them live. They’re a great band live, if you get the chance go watch them. So much harder in-person.
I love Susana Hoffs! She's one of my favorite 80s artist ! These harmonies combined with rock instrumental make this song one of my favorites of all times ❤
Seeing clips from the movie Less Than Zero reminds me of how bad Robert Downey Jr's health was at the time from the drug abuse. I'm so glad he turned his life around.
I'm an old fart but when I came across this on RUclips, I loved it, different from the original but so well done and so rocking, and that drummer.....WOW
My favorite Bangles song, always on my playlist. Gave it to younger girls friends I know who are into karaoke and have a cover band. Now they are addicted.
The Bangles started playing this song in the early 80's when they were a new struggling young band. Originally they kicked off their version of the song with the guitar riff. There are a lot of live versions of this song.....the Bangles were always good live
Awesome! The Bangles were my favorite (and most talented IMHO) of the Grrl bands of that ear and this cover was my favorite song by them. Thanks for taking a listen, Beth!
Great reaction as always. I really loved early Bangles and that jangle pop sound from the Paisley Underground scene. One of my favorite songs of theirs is Going Down to Liverpool. Also a cover with the same beautiful harmonies as Hazy Shade of Winter.
Loved these girls from the original releases. Super talented. For what it’s worth, you look extraordinarily healthy these days (not that you didn’t before). Just keep doing whatever you’re doing!
For any of those curious, the movie scenes are from 1987's Less Than Zero staring Robert Downey Jr, Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, and James Spader. I believe it's one of the best movies of that era, but it gets overlooked a lot due to the dark content and has suffered due to not being available on Blu-Ray or any streaming services (I assume there is some kinds of rights issues going on)... and the soundtrack is killer too, featuring Going Back to Cali (LL Cool J), Life Fade Away (Roy Orbison), In-a-gadda-da-vida (cover, Slayer), Bring The Noise (Public Enemy), Rock and Roll All Night (Poison), and this song... Hazy Shade of Winter (cover, Bangles). Andrew McCarthy's character goes home from college for Christmas at his estranged girlfriend's (Gertz) request to find that their mutual best friend, Robert Downey Jr, has a deadly drug addiction. There are some fun cameos in this one too, including Suzanna Hoffs from the Bangles, and a very young and uncredited Brad Pitt (Brad is a preppy party goer you can see at the beginning of the film as Clay (McCarthy) enters a party. If you've not seen it, find a dvd copy and give it watch, well worth it 80's gem.
This re-tread of Simon & Garfunkle's release from twenty years earlier was for inclusion in the soundtrack of an otherwise mediocre movie called "Less than Zero". The video aired on MTV for some time and it includes snippets from the film intercut with the sham performance by the Bangles. The vocal abilities of the four young ladies is well displayed on this cut and the studio performance shows what sort of benefits can come from hard work and "how you get to Carnegie Hall" (practice, practice, practice!)
It's proof that you can turn even a Paul Simon composition into a hard rock song. I love the organ in the background. As a teenager, I also had a huge crush on the beautiful Susanna Hoffs.
Like others, I'm not big on covers and remakes, but this one just gets it right for me. Simon and Garfunkel version was perfect for the late 60's, and the Bangles just knocked it out of the park for the movie soundtrack for Less Than Zero. I have this on a four song EP that has this version and three extended "dance mix" versions that are pretty good.
At the time It felt like a return to their Garage Rock roots (check out their version of "Going Down to Liverpool" then maybe listen to the Katrina and the Waves version). Now I think of Ghost's "Square Hammer" as it has that same sort of vibe.
Thank you for the super helpful musical analysis, especially as I am rejoining the River City Mixed Chorus this season (apologies for the unarthorized shameless plug, on your feed)! I've been away for about 8? seasons, and have missed the first two practices, as I was out of town. There are fortuantely recordings from the prior practices to listen to and practice what you shared, before my first rehearsal with the group tomorrow. It is a beautiful song! I would add that the video is potentially more nuanced, as it contains clips from the movie in which it starred. This acknowledgement, for me personally, colors and adds meaning to the chord selections and tone. Overall, a very powerful work of art! Thank you!!
I loved this song from the moment I first heard it. I may still have the single tucked away somewhere. It was years later that I found out it was a cover, with the original being written and performed by Simon & Garfunkel.
Nice! Great song, I don't remember when I first heard it, but it's always been fun to listen to. Interesting comments on the production techniques (and sweaters. 😊 I grew up with cold snowy winters, so I get it.)
Loved your expression when that guitar riff rocked you! I love this cover and knew it was coming so I watched you and not the band. I've heard that Paul Simon didn't like this cover, but I thought it was great. It's the same guitar riff but on electric, not acoustic. As Emeril would have said, they kicked it up a notch (several, I think). The movie clips, BTW, are from Less Than Zero starring a very young Robert Downy Jr. For my part, I would have loved just watching the band. That riff just sends me!
@@TheAyeAye1 The movie is definitely missable. But the Slayer cover of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is great, Ll Cool J, Danzig doing crooner pop. It makes sense, Rick Rubin produced most of it; and he produces very listenable music.
This is my genre of music that I grew up with. Classic Alternative Rock! I always put the Bangles and the Go Go’s together. Check them out. Thanks for reviewing! Still waiting for an Erasure review! Andy Bell’s voice is ridiculous! Start with “A Little Respect” or “Love to Hate You”. Look forward to it. 🤙🏻
All four of them sang lead vocals. (Sadly, predominately Susannah's tunes ended up being most of the singles). Hazy Shade of Winter really proves how fantastically they mesh together. Amazingly, in all their years, they only collectively wrote one song: Let it Go from their Different Light album. Again, this has all four of them sharing lead vocals. Two teams of two, criss crossing over each other. Beautiful. Check out this live version: ruclips.net/video/DsFcn8sdNI8/видео.html
If you'd like to know the full history of the Bangles, their recordings and, yes, the story behind Hazy Shade of Winter, may I recommend "All Over the Place: The Rise of the Bangles from the L.A. Underground" by Eric Shade. Available through Hozac Books or your favorite indie book dealer.
The Simon & Garfunkel original has the line "carry your cup in your hand", as does this radio edit cover version. However, The Bangles' album version has the line as "carry your gun in your hand". I was young, but i remember it being a little controversial at the time.
@alittlebitgone I don't have a release. I just remember being a freshman in high school and it being all the talk (the adults were steamed (for the children, of course), & so were the S&G purists). I feel like i heard it around that time, too, but that's a fuzzier memory. Possible they changed it due to furor, equally possible i'm hallucinating. 🤪
Interesting analagy to Bulgarian folk music. If you want to hear the most spectacular Bulgarian folk music harmonies used in a rock song check out Kate Bush's Rocket's Tail with the Trio Bulgarka on backing vocals (also a great guitar performance by Dave Gilmour). A breathtaking song.
I think some credit should go to Paul Simon as well. Unquestionably, the Bangles put in the work to make this sound great. But Simon and Garfunkel were themselves known for their well-blended harmonies. Paul wrote the song with that in mind, which leads us in the end to this song being right in the space where the Bangles could not help but shine. I grew up on Simon & Garfunkel. It was my parent’s music, but at 51 years of age I can still sing along with pretty much any song from their five LPs. (Which is to say, I can mouth the words while listening to them sing it. Nobody has ever done enough evil to the world to make me want to subject them to the actual sound of my singing.). To my knowledge, there are only three cover songs to surpass their progenitors. This is one. The Pixies cover of “Head On” by the Jesus and Mary Chain is another. And the Indigo Girls’ cover of “Romeo and Juliette” from Dire Straits is the third. Simon wrote the song for two-voice harmony, and they’re doing it with four. And I think the faster tempo really does add something, especially after the first bit being slower than the original. I am omitting all the really weird experimental stuff, like the big band cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” or The Gourdes’ cover of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”.
Your views are really interesting and it is entertaining and informative at the same time. Just one thing: Delay is not echo. Delay: "DELAYyyyyy...." - Aprupt ending of a sound is delayed and softened. Echo: "ECHOechoecho..." - Sound bit is played in a loop with decreasing volume.
Amazing cover! I was a Maiden, Priest, Queensryche, fan at the time but this just rocked. Then, sadly, I found the whole "Less Than Zero" movie association disturbing and unsettling and didn't watch Robert Downey Jr. again until Iron Man. Still great, even with the conflicted recollections. 😂

My highlight will always be "Something to believe in". An album track (so no official video), composed and sung by Michael Steele, the red head bass guitarist. So beautiful, so emotional - about finally finding someone, finding happiness. "Maybe this loser's luck is turning". Beautiful harmonies once again. It's track 4 of the album "Everything".
Making me choose one is not fair. I would honestly say I love this one the most. Eternal Flame is great as well. But they were an amazing band. The fact that Suzanna is on Instagram and does acoustic Manic Monday is fantastic.
The pitch seems high on the song playback, like it's a bit speeded up. First noticed the drums were sharper and higher than usual, then the voices too. EDITED TO ADD: Yes, I just listened to the original music video, which sounds lower (and correct).
The Bangles were always really underrated because they were pretty women making pretty music. Each and every one of the were skilled musicians. Susanne Hoffs is still playing great music. For bonus points, she looks twenty years younger than her 65 years.

You do know that in the United States, they were hated and made jokes about them in the 90s?
What an amazing take on the Simon and Garfunkel version. Beautiful. Thanks for showing this gem to me.
Easily one of the greatest cover songs of all time!
The entry of the instruments is so garage punk, I just love it.

The Bangles achieved amazing harmonies on just about every song -- even during live performances.
The Bangles were the best thing to come out of that retro-Sixties thing that happened in L.A. in the Eighties. Great Musicians all.

Bangles - In your Room
I'm a huge fan of their album, "Everything" - and there's one song on there, "Watching the Sky", that always sticks with me.
@ So many had a crush on Susanna - for me, it was always Michael. And "Something to Believe In" is *fantastic*.
Super dank
listen to "because" by the beatles....you will love it...

Something i noticed that wasn't mentioned is the guitar was moving side to side in my headphones.
Hi Beth good day from México
The pitch seems high on the song playback, like it's a bit speeded up. First noticed the drums were sharper and higher than usual, then the voices too. EDITED TO ADD: Yes, I just listened to the original music video, which sounds lower (and correct).
Suzanne Hoffs and Beth, just hit that certain something. You know what I mean?
Thanks. Great song that i kind of forgot about. Bonus; the video includes snippets of Robert Downy Junior before he reset and got sober.
👍
Worth checking out the movie it came from “ less than zero “ Robert Downey Jr does a good job in this story of excess in late 1989 LA.
Love this version. Also who knew that Robert Downey JR was playing himself
