@@ronzhiii you are quite right. the cleat is easier to setup than speedplay. but the pedals are stiffer. I just got them. I also cannot get them on till I use my trainer which I can use much greater force to clip in. once you clip in and out a few times, then it should be okay.
I actually use standard SPD pedals and MTB shoes all the time for all my bikes, the road ones too. For those of you who never saw such a shoe close-up (as you would have wanted to avoid the risk of throwing up in your mouth), it has actual gripped sole. It makes coffee shop stops so much more comfortable. As a matter of fact, any kind of walking around when I'm geared for/after/during a ride.
Coffee shop? ....How about when you are stopped at a stop sign on an uphill grade? Speedplay type you just step down. Look or Shimano you hope you can get your toe in and heel down before you fall over! If rather clickety clack at the coffee shop! The coffee still tastes the same!
@@robinbebbington7063 When I went clipless, I mostly did commuting and mixed surface (paved/gravel) excursions, so SPD was the clear choice. Once I got more serious in road cycling (still only on the sprotif/amateur level) I sometimes considered going for a true "roadie" pedal system, but I realized I don't want all the inconvenience with having different setup for my different bikes. One time I bought a gripless soled road shoe that accepted SPD cleats too (it was a shimano shoe, before they introduced SPD-SL), but I quickly figured it out that it did not worth the minimal weight/aero benefits for me. Some claim that road specific cleats have a better power transfer, but I haven't found any actual research backing this up.
I had a titanium version of these. Was immediately struck by the apparent quality, appearance and light-weight. However, I spent half a day installing and then fiddling with the C clip to attempt to clip in. May have been the same problem Bart Schrijvers mentions below. I am not a mechanical dimwit, yet I couldn't get them to work. I wrote to the suppliers and they weren't interested, just said the item was "high quality". Sadly I binned them, and put them down as a bad experience (balanced against lots of good Chinese imports). Love the channel Luke.- you are my hero.
Just wanted to point out your presentation skill/quality seem to have improved amazingly! One thing I specificly noticed is that you almost completely got rid of the filler words and the scripts/editing is making the video very smooth and enjoyable!

Used this for a while now and I think this is a pair of excellent pedals! Weight saving, good walk-ability, board customisation and very stiff! The lack of comprehensive installation manual is probably why it is causing so much trouble. Make sure all of these are followed properly to get the best experience; 1. Choose the correct 3/4 holes adapter. Making sure it is completely flat after installing the 4 screws. Check it with a ruler. 2. Make sure the C Clip is not inversely installed. The slanted edge should face the floor. Most people can't get their pedal in because of this. 3. Apply 1-2 drops of dry / wax lube on the c clip after installing the cleat. 4. Practice clip in and out around 20 times per side to break in the pedal. First few times may be a little harder. To get the pedal in, try not to face the pedal backwards. Push it in with the ball of your feet while the pedal is facing upwards or slightly forward. Happy pedaling!

I am subscribe to multiple cycling channels but you my friend are by far the most entertaining one. I stay engaged throughout the whole video and never skip the timeline. I don’t understand how you don’t have a way bigger audience. Honestly I think you are one of the best cycling channels out there, by tailoring to the everyday man that want to get into cycling but don’t want to work just to feed their cycling addiction.
used these cleats with speedplay pedals. fully compatible and work well and so much cheaper but just like genuine rip off speedplay cleats they wear quick and you get the horrible rocking feeling quite quickly, even quicker if you lock the position which is pretty much the point of the speedplay concept. tried for 2 years, moved back to SPD SL.
I bought my first pair of steel Chinaplays a couple of months ago (along with the cleat covers) based on this video's recommendation. I can't fault them in any way. I've previously used both SPD and SPD SL pedals and the Chinaplays are by far the easiest to clip in and out of and unclipping only ever occurs when I want it to. The cleat covers are a dream to walk in, compared to the other two alternatives. I was so impressed that I bought a second pair in Titanium. Thanks so much for the video!
2183 miles is a very short life for the C-spring clip. I have gone through 4 pairs of the Speedplay cleats, and each pair lasted at least 6,000 miles before I replaced them, and I never had a spring clip break on me.
So I mean this may have just been a bit of an anomaly, I've only had the one of cleats. But then again I suspect the speedplay cleats are probably made of some slightly better materials. I guess time will tell with my new cleats...
I’ve kept the c springs over the years and binned the other worn parts of my Zero cleats. I’m thinking to buy a pair of these Chinese cleats and throw away the supplied springs and replace them with original Speedplay springs assuming the Chinese copies share original machining specs. I’m not surprised the Spring broke on the copy as it’s always going to be the weakest link in the cleat.
I’ve been using Speedplays for a few years and had two C-springs break. I always carry a spare in my tool pouch just in case. It irks me that they don’t sell the spring as a spare part.

At the beginning was quite frustrating because non of your recommendations worked. However two hours later I think about what you said regarding that after two hours came to my attention what’s you said about improving clipping after 10 clip ins. Then I disassembled the clip and manually wide the metal clip with a set of pliers, and voila! Now I’m in love with this clips. To all if you purchase this set also consider to purchase the rubber covers
I've ridden Speedplay for 15 years now. I have never had a C clamp break on me. I also ride Speedplay specific shoes. They have an even lower stack height than with an adapter, and are far easier to set up. It's imperative, though, to have the metal shim under the cleat so you don't gouge out the carbon or fiber sole of the shoe.
Glad U reviewed my pedals. I own titanium version. I ride mine set for 2 years and they are pretty much worned out now. Really great pedals. Only negative side u did not mention is that rounded part placed on left and right side of tread surface start to worn early. I can see in ur video same problem.
After viewing the video and reading the comments...I still went ahead and purchased these pedals. I was using a gen 2 set of Speedplay pedals so I sold on the float. Most of what I read is accurate, but as I assembled the cleats I used dry lube on the retaining ring in anticipation of a struggle. It took about five minutes to get clipped in on each side, and a few more minutes to get the knack of how they worked. They are stiff but much easier after about ten minutes of in/out. For the price, I'm thrilled. For $47.15, these new ones are worth the initial hassle.

I have used Speedplay pedals for around 5 years now and in my opinion they are awesome to use. In that time I have had to replace the cleats and the striker plates on the pedals. Both items l used Chinese replacements. The only thing I can say about the Chinese replacement cleats was that the clip was not as strong as the original ones but certainly good enough to feel secure when clipped in. Once again Luke you hit it out of the park with your review and given us more than enough information to make a decision on whether to purchase these pedals. Great job 👏
I bought these same pedals from AliExpress (at least visually the same). The dont engage at all with the cleats provided or with my own speedplay cleats. Both cleats engage fine with speedplay pedals.
My titanium set were impossible to clip in. I carefully expanded the "C" clip in the cleats with a set of pliers and now work great! Also, I would recommend a quality spray dry lube, like Liquid Wrench, which will not attract as much dirt in cleats.
@@suhazliey I used reverse pliers which made it easy to expand the "C" clips. Now have over 1000 miles on these, absolutely sold! Best pedals, great support...love these! Just get past the "too tight clip in" by expanding the "C" clips! What ever it takes, just don't over-do it!
Got a set of Titaniums recently and also find them near impossible to engage! I've used actual Speedplays for decades with no problems, but these are sooooo frustrating! I'll be riding along and my foot falls out cause not engage. This is so f'ing dangerous cause it's so hard to tell if you're engaged or not! I'll try your suggestion and spread the c-clip. Thanks
Another brilliant video! Must say, I’ve missed you man! I’ve been using normal SPD cleats on my road bike for years. It’s just easier to walk in them with shoes that recess the cleats, no wear issues, and no clip in problems, ever! But shoes choices are quite limited. I considered speedplays, which seemed like the best answer, but $$$$. But these look great! Just ride with the covers on! Maybe throw a spare c clamp in the repair kit. Thanks for the great content!
@@robertwalkerdine1178 Agreed. I’ve been considering the Fizik Terra Powerstrap, but now Luke has got me thinking! Speedplay style cleats have some better adapter options for midsole installation.
They're little rubber covers that go over road cleats. I'd never go anywhere without them. Not necessary for MTB cleats as most shoes have the cleat recessed, unless they're those weird road-style shoes that take both type of cleat.
I've always used the spd mountain pedals on my road bike. You don't even have to go to Ali Express, the $40 shimano pedals that will last for thousands of miles and you don't have to add anything to make them walkable.
Luke, I've been following you from the start because we basically share the same interests, being high value bike upgrades at a reasonable price. A lot of the products that you review, I already own but your videos are so enjoyable that I watch them completely and rewatch them a few days/weeks later. Absolutely great man! @@TraceVelo I do have a pair of these pedals, however I think I might have bought them to early. The first pair I've got made it almost near impossible to clip in, the cleat and the pedal... the measurements simply did not match properly and I basically destroyed both C-springs :-D. However, the seller rectified the situation and had sent me the "next generation" (read not monday-or-friday-produced) cleats :-). And after using those, I was sold for the concept. I am a lighter rider, more of a climber/time trialer profile, not a sprinter, so I really don't mind that it feels a bit more loose compared to a standard look keo pedal at its tightest. However, this setup has a metal cleat and it does provide me with a bit more stability compared my keo's even... I do have cleat wedges tough... so my feet are always straight on the pedals. ANYWAY my first pair were the red versions, ended buying another pair, the black ones like you have with the red end cap, BUT I bought black end caps (crank brothers, but they fit these chinaplay pedals and are also ordered through AlieExpress) it made them look even more pro and pure as they already did ;-)
@@TraceVelo An other interesting thing to note Luke, I just bought real original speedplays, used ones from a friend. And the chinaplay cleats also work perfectly on those! I didn't need to buy an extra pair of shoes en cleats to ride all my bikes :-)

Luke, not sure if you are gonna read this message, but I still want to write this down. Because of this vlog, I bought the pedals. Firstly,I was disappointed because they didn't clip in, after riding for 10km, I realized you need to press it hard, especially for the outer sides (right side of right feet,and left side of left feet). Plus, put some oil would help. But I must say, if you are used to LOOK or Shimano, it takes time to get used to the new system.

I had the Speedplay Zero chrome-molys for around 2000kms before the cleats developed some play. I greased and cleaned them after every ride and despite this the cleats still wore out super quickly. I couldn't bring myself to spend around £60 on a new pair of cleats and so I sold it and went for the R8000 SPD-SL instead. I also ended up getting a pair of winter shoes and a winter bike and so being able to buy cheaper cleats and pedals for that while keeping everything compatible was a huge plus for me. Might've been a different story had I got these pedals!

Got these, took maybe 3 days to get it working . ShoutOut to those comments pile down and open bit wider those “c” clips. Paired these with chinese cycling shoes Speed. Got 50Kms on it now. They light and really good looking pedals. Glad I went for it.

Hey guys, for anyone having problems with these, make sure you have the C-clip facing the correct way and also stretch the C-clip with pliers or vice. I had to stretch mine by quite a bit before I could clip in and out. Hope that helps.

Great review Luke .... I've been using Speedplay Zero pedals with longer spindles for the last twenty years now, and would be loathe to even contemplate using anything else at this stage. I was curious about trying a set of these Alibaba knock-off's for ages now. The c-clips on Speedplay cleats appear to be made of a hi-tensile spring steel, where the ones replica pedals have titanium c-clips... I'n all my years of riding Speedplay Zero's, I've never broken a c-clip although I always carry a spare one in my seatpack just in case.. Unfortunately the Speedplay as a brand has gone to the dogs ever since It was acquired by Wahoo last year...
I've had a pair of second hand speedplays. One of the con's is they will gradually wear out and allow your foot to tilt outward without noticing. After moving to flat Shimano cleats, it was so nice to not be riding around on clapped cleats for a few months.
Honestly, cleat covers feature is the second best feature in my opinion lol. I can't tell you how hard it is to walk with Look cleats for me. Awesome review mate, thanks a lot, will probably order a pair of these.

10:33 I hope that what I’m seeing is just mud and not the totally destroyed plastic housing. In any case that metal C clamp should not break easily as it doesn’t move that much. If it broke that’s indication of shoddy material used.
Right! It's the equivalent of a broken spring in any other pedal. It's nice that replacement is cheap, but still, it shouldn't happen, especially at 2000 miles.

I usually use my clipped in foot to push off from a stand still... Might sound strange to most... I use Look cleats without the rubber sole, and they are OK for walking on most surfaces, with the only exception being ceramic tiles.
so far I’ve bought 4 Titanium set for my client bikes, the only major issue I’ve found is getting additional cleats when you have more than one pair of shoe or for replacement! I can’t get them to fit with the pedal!!! I’ve tried using the speedplay cleats but the fit is not so good, I have taken some measurements of the China pedal diameter (flat area before the chamfer) vs the Speedplay Zero 1.350”, and the China one is 1.385”. The 2 set of China cleats are perfect with the Speedplay Zero Pedal. I’ve contacted several sellers on Aliexpress on buying extra cleats with the pedal set that they sell, and everyone say NO NO NO...WTF??? so that has been my experience with these. The Speedplay Titanium are $300+ vs China Ti $75 with very similar weight, but if you can’t get replacement cleats then your out of luck. I’ve resorted to buying used Speedplay Zero alloy pedal and upgrading them with China Ti Spindle & plates for total cost of around $100, and this guaranteed that I can use real or China cleats.
@@yonseimatt my conclusion is that the cleats sold on Amazon and Aliexpress are made for Speedplay Zero pedals, the China pedals are about .035”-.040” larger than the Zero which makes them nearly impossible to clip in but fit perfectly on 6 different set of Zero pedals I’ve tried. I’m planning on taking the China pedal plates apart and grinding the diameter down a bit to match the Speedplay Zero.
The double-sided design is a huge difference, especially if you ride in traffic. Nothing worse than having a grumpy truck driver trying to kiss your butt when the light goes green, only to have your foot slip off the wrong side of a single-sided pedal and do a digger into the tarmac and send you over the bars. It seems even long-term experienced SPD-SL owners do the clip-in dab dance. I've been a Speedplay user for many years, and will never go back to single-sided SPD-SL The action is also more like SPD-MTB, so less adaptation required when switching bikes. You can reduce release tension by Dremeling the inside of the C a little. I agree low maintenance if you stay out of the dirt. On the cleat covers I use Shoo Goo to glue them in place. If you have to negotiate stairs (hello Sydney Harbour Bridge) a lot of walking will stretch the plastic. Shoo Goo keeps them in place, but they can still be pulled off and the polyurethane glue strippped off easily if you need to change a cleat spring.
I have Shimano 105 pedals for the last 8 months and am ready to replace my second pair of cleats. Wish I had known about these back then, I would have given them a shot, saved some money, and saved on pain from when I miss a clip-in at a greenlight and hit my 'soft tissue' on the seat.
A bit left field... but if you want winter lightweight bombproof pedals try Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3. A lot less stuff to go wrong plus easy to setup on a pair of mtb shoes like spd. I have been using them on the road bike as well as the mtb for about 10 years. Great video keep em cumin
Great review, I changed from Look, to Speedplay then Shimano to Keywin before settling on the Keywins and that was 15 years ago!! Love the Siroko jerseys and their bibs look pretty good too, a shame that the XXL in the jersey is still 3 cm too narrow in the chest for this body, pity because I love their designs.

Yeah, so I ordered some and it was actually impossible to clip into them. I tried opening up the metal C-shaped ring, it helped a bit, but I've gone back to my Look Keo/Exustar pedals. They are a bit heavier but I can clip in + out bo problems.
I ordered a set of these pedals, and extra cleats and covers.....based on your hearty recommendation. Have been using Look Keo Max for 10+ years ,and XTR on gravel bike. Personally, I'd love to use XTR on roadie just so I can walk normally when off the bike.....but looking for a good light pair of mtb shoes. Will let you know how they go when they arrive. OK, out of the box, they are exactly as advertised. Incidentally, there isn't a left and right pedal. They are interchangeable. I installed immediately, and found it not so smooth to clip in. That has continued for the 120km I've done to date, road cycling. And today, the right pedal started to develop a click. After getting home soft pedaling, I found the red pedal lock system at the end of the axle is moving in and out along the axle about 4mm. So there's obviously a loose nut or similar, inside. I've taken off the black plastic cap on the lateral end, and tried to undo the 6 sided nut on the end of the axle, but haven't been able to shift it yet. Will press on.......Needless to say, I think the pedals are shipped in an unsafe state....and would advise anyone buying them to strip them down, and to lube and retorque all components. If they continue to give me trouble, I will get a refund. So, so far.....not rock frkn solid.....for moi.
200km later. OK, I resolved the loose right pedal issue. The black plastic cap on the outer end of the axle plays a key role in stopping the pedal sliding along the axle. It therefore should be fitted with loctite, which it wasn't at the factory. As for the too tight clip in, I resolved that after watching a speedplay installation video. Because these pedals are designed similarly, they need to be installed similarly. There are no instructions on how to install Chinaplay pedals, so Trace might have shown how he installed them. It is critical to only apply 2Nm of torque to the bolts that hold the lower metal plate to the plastic base. Speedplay actually say to tighten the bolts until you get resistance, then turn another 1/4 turn, and no more. This ensures the C spring doesn't have excessive pressure preventing its correct function. Speedplay also recommend oiling or greasing the cleat so the cleat/pedal clip in has less friction. So the above fixes have made the pedals a lot more reliable for clipping in. However, I have decleated a dozen times without intending to, so I am unwilling to get out of the saddle and pedal hard. The cleat covers arrived yesterday, and these are as Trace says. They don't interfere with clipping in/out, and make walking on the cleats totally safe. At this point, I would not recommend these pedals for stronger riders who get out of the saddle a lot. I will work on a solution for unintended unclipping.
6 mths later at an average ~125km/week, some weeks hitting 300km. I continued to have the end threaded plugs twist loose on both sides. However, I resolved this by using plumbers tape on the threads. I did this rather than use loctite, as the plugs are very thin and fragile, and I did not want to have to use a lot of force to remove them in the future. Nevertheless, every few rides, I make sure I check the plugs are not winding loose. It is important they are tight as they hold the bearings in place. The cleats are going very well. They have worn a little so now clip in reliably with little fuss. Decleating is also very predictable and no fuss. I can twist my heel in or out, and get a quick release. Bearings don't feel worn whatsoever. I still do not trust the pedals to get out of the saddle and pedal like a crazy man. Fortunately most of my cycling is on the flats. I have the cleat covers, and they are a treat....just get off the bike at local cafe and walk care free. They are holding up very well. no sign of failing yet, and I do walk on them more than most.
@@arrivingarriving5166 THanks. I always appreciate real world feedback on products I am interested in buying. Another update after 12mths use: The pedals and cleats are going fine. The plumber's tape has stopped the unscrewing of the axle end caps, so no more problems with loose bearings. The cleat covers have heaps of service life left in them, and work really well. I often pick up fruit and vege or stop at a cafe when out riding, and it is really nice not to slip around on concrete or have to walk funny. I still don't get out of the saddle much. I am in my 60s, and cannot afford to fall off and break a bone. Maybe 1 out of 20 times, I do not click in first time. But with a wriggle of the foot, this is overcome. As with the speedplay, I think these pedals require optimal set up to work perfectly - correct torque of cleats and a little lube at cleat/pedal interface.
Oh my gad! Got mine a week ago before your review. But mine is rebranded here in the Philippines called "Speedone" from a local shop. Got the titanium version too but pair of pedals is only 140g. Less 10g. They are all look the same. It cost 2.1k php or 43$ only
I had them. They are not nearly as good as speedplay (mine failed) but I will buy them again as the entire pedal/cleats cost the same as a pair of new speedplay cleats
I love the pedal part, not the cleat part so much. The spring in the cleat broke after a few hundred miles making my shoe completely stuck to the pedal. If others have not had problems with the spring then go for it!
Just one thing to point out.... AliExpress now charge VAT on anything under £135 since start of the year. They have to by law...probably because of UK leaving the EU. Great video as usual Luke.

These did not work at all for me. Tried everything. Can't clip in. If I some how do manage to get clipped in I'll update.

@@TheStandlau That's the first thing I tried, didn't help. I stretched the C clips and one side works okay. The other side works 30% of the time.

For those of you who never saw such a shoe close-up (as you would have wanted to avoid the risk of throwing up in your mouth), it has actual gripped sole. It makes coffee shop stops so much more comfortable. As a matter of fact, any kind of walking around when I'm geared for/after/during a ride.
Coffee shop? ....How about when you are stopped at a stop sign on an uphill grade? Speedplay type you just step down. Look or Shimano you hope you can get your toe in and heel down before you fall over!
If rather clickety clack at the coffee shop! The coffee still tastes the same!

@@robinbebbington7063 When I went clipless, I mostly did commuting and mixed surface (paved/gravel) excursions, so SPD was the clear choice. Once I got more serious in road cycling (still only on the sprotif/amateur level) I sometimes considered going for a true "roadie" pedal system, but I realized I don't want all the inconvenience with having different setup for my different bikes. One time I bought a gripless soled road shoe that accepted SPD cleats too (it was a shimano shoe, before they introduced SPD-SL), but I quickly figured it out that it did not worth the minimal weight/aero benefits for me. Some claim that road specific cleats have a better power transfer, but I haven't found any actual research backing this up.
I had a titanium version of these. Was immediately struck by the apparent quality, appearance and light-weight. However, I spent half a day installing and then fiddling with the C clip to attempt to clip in. May have been the same problem Bart Schrijvers mentions below. I am not a mechanical dimwit, yet I couldn't get them to work. I wrote to the suppliers and they weren't interested, just said the item was "high quality". Sadly I binned them, and put them down as a bad experience (balanced against lots of good Chinese imports). Love the channel Luke.- you are my hero.
Just wanted to point out your presentation skill/quality seem to have improved amazingly! One thing I specificly noticed is that you almost completely got rid of the filler words and the scripts/editing is making the video very smooth and enjoyable!

Used this for a while now and I think this is a pair of excellent pedals! Weight saving, good walk-ability, board customisation and very stiff! The lack of comprehensive installation manual is probably why it is causing so much trouble. Make sure all of these are followed properly to get the best experience;
1. Choose the correct 3/4 holes adapter. Making sure it is completely flat after installing the 4 screws. Check it with a ruler.
2. Make sure the C Clip is not inversely installed. The slanted edge should face the floor. Most people can't get their pedal in because of this.
3. Apply 1-2 drops of dry / wax lube on the c clip after installing the cleat.
4. Practice clip in and out around 20 times per side to break in the pedal. First few times may be a little harder.
To get the pedal in, try not to face the pedal backwards. Push it in with the ball of your feet while the pedal is facing upwards or slightly forward. Happy pedaling!

I am subscribe to multiple cycling channels but you my friend are by far the most entertaining one. I stay engaged throughout the whole video and never skip the timeline. I don’t understand how you don’t have a way bigger audience. Honestly I think you are one of the best cycling channels out there, by tailoring to the everyday man that want to get into cycling but don’t want to work just to feed their cycling addiction.

used these cleats with speedplay pedals. fully compatible and work well and so much cheaper but just like genuine rip off speedplay cleats they wear quick and you get the horrible rocking feeling quite quickly, even quicker if you lock the position which is pretty much the point of the speedplay concept. tried for 2 years, moved back to SPD SL.
I bought my first pair of steel Chinaplays a couple of months ago (along with the cleat covers) based on this video's recommendation. I can't fault them in any way. I've previously used both SPD and SPD SL pedals and the Chinaplays are by far the easiest to clip in and out of and unclipping only ever occurs when I want it to. The cleat covers are a dream to walk in, compared to the other two alternatives. I was so impressed that I bought a second pair in Titanium. Thanks so much for the video!

This channel challenges the gentrification that cycling has been going through the last years, and I can't say how much I appreciate that.
The gentrification in cycling is caused by people who use words like gentrification.
2183 miles is a very short life for the C-spring clip. I have gone through 4 pairs of the Speedplay cleats, and each pair lasted at least 6,000 miles before I replaced them, and I never had a spring clip break on me.
So I mean this may have just been a bit of an anomaly, I've only had the one of cleats. But then again I suspect the speedplay cleats are probably made of some slightly better materials. I guess time will tell with my new cleats...
But the cost is almost 1/8 of the set of Speedplay Zero Pavé. Even if it only lasted 1/3 of the Speedplay, that's still a good value.
I’ve kept the c springs over the years and binned the other worn parts of my Zero cleats. I’m thinking to buy a pair of these Chinese cleats and throw away the supplied springs and replace them with original Speedplay springs assuming the Chinese copies share original machining specs.
I’m not surprised the Spring broke on the copy as it’s always going to be the weakest link in the cleat.
I’ve been using Speedplays for a few years and had two C-springs break. I always carry a spare in my tool pouch just in case. It irks me that they don’t sell the spring as a spare part.

At the beginning was quite frustrating because non of your recommendations worked. However two hours later I think about what you said regarding that after two hours came to my attention what’s you said about improving clipping after 10 clip ins. Then I disassembled the clip and manually wide the metal clip with a set of pliers, and voila! Now I’m in love with this clips. To all if you purchase this set also consider to purchase the rubber covers
I've ridden Speedplay for 15 years now. I have never had a C clamp break on me. I also ride Speedplay specific shoes. They have an even lower stack height than with an adapter, and are far easier to set up. It's imperative, though, to have the metal shim under the cleat so you don't gouge out the carbon or fiber sole of the shoe.
Glad U reviewed my pedals. I own titanium version. I ride mine set for 2 years and they are pretty much worned out now. Really great pedals. Only negative side u did not mention is that rounded part placed on left and right side of tread surface start to worn early. I can see in ur video same problem.

After viewing the video and reading the comments...I still went ahead and purchased these pedals. I was using a gen 2 set of Speedplay pedals so I sold on the float. Most of what I read is accurate, but as I assembled the cleats I used dry lube on the retaining ring in anticipation of a struggle. It took about five minutes to get clipped in on each side, and a few more minutes to get the knack of how they worked. They are stiff but much easier after about ten minutes of in/out. For the price, I'm thrilled. For $47.15, these new ones are worth the initial hassle.

I have used Speedplay pedals for around 5 years now and in my opinion they are awesome to use. In that time I have had to replace the cleats and the striker plates on the pedals. Both items l used Chinese replacements. The only thing I can say about the Chinese replacement cleats was that the clip was not as strong as the original ones but certainly good enough to feel secure when clipped in. Once again Luke you hit it out of the park with your review and given us more than enough information to make a decision on whether to purchase these pedals. Great job 👏
I bought these same pedals from AliExpress (at least visually the same). The dont engage at all with the cleats provided or with my own speedplay cleats. Both cleats engage fine with speedplay pedals.
My titanium set were impossible to clip in. I carefully expanded the "C" clip in the cleats with a set of pliers and now work great! Also, I would recommend a quality spray dry lube, like Liquid Wrench, which will not attract as much dirt in cleats.

@@suhazliey I used reverse pliers which made it easy to expand the "C" clips. Now have over 1000 miles on these, absolutely sold! Best pedals, great support...love these! Just get past the "too tight clip in" by expanding the "C" clips! What ever it takes, just don't over-do it!
Got a set of Titaniums recently and also find them near impossible to engage! I've used actual Speedplays for decades with no problems, but these are sooooo frustrating! I'll be riding along and my foot falls out cause not engage. This is so f'ing dangerous cause it's so hard to tell if you're engaged or not! I'll try your suggestion and spread the c-clip.

Another brilliant video! Must say, I’ve missed you man! I’ve been using normal SPD cleats on my road bike for years. It’s just easier to walk in them with shoes that recess the cleats, no wear issues, and no clip in problems, ever! But shoes choices are quite limited. I considered speedplays, which seemed like the best answer, but $$$$. But these look great! Just ride with the covers on! Maybe throw a spare c clamp in the repair kit. Thanks for the great content!

on my roadie i use xc shoes and shimano spd mtb pedals, what are cleat covers?? 😁
They're little rubber covers that go over road cleats. I'd never go anywhere without them. Not necessary for MTB cleats as most shoes have the cleat recessed, unless they're those weird road-style shoes that take both type of cleat.
I've always used the spd mountain pedals on my road bike. You don't even have to go to Ali Express, the $40 shimano pedals that will last for thousands of miles and you don't have to add anything to make them walkable.

@@TraceVelo I do have a pair of these pedals, however I think I might have bought them to early. The first pair I've got made it almost near impossible to clip in, the cleat and the pedal... the measurements simply did not match properly and I basically destroyed both C-springs :-D. However, the seller rectified the situation and had sent me the "next generation" (read not monday-or-friday-produced) cleats :-). And after using those, I was sold for the concept. I am a lighter rider, more of a climber/time trialer profile, not a sprinter, so I really don't mind that it feels a bit more loose compared to a standard look keo pedal at its tightest. However, this setup has a metal cleat and it does provide me with a bit more stability compared my keo's even... I do have cleat wedges tough... so my feet are always straight on the pedals. ANYWAY my first pair were the red versions, ended buying another pair, the black ones like you have with the red end cap, BUT I bought black end caps (crank brothers, but they fit these chinaplay pedals and are also ordered through AlieExpress) it made them look even more pro and pure as they already did ;-)
@@TraceVelo An other interesting thing to note Luke, I just bought real original speedplays, used ones from a friend. And the chinaplay cleats also work perfectly on those! I didn't need to buy an extra pair of shoes en cleats to ride all my bikes :-)

Luke, not sure if you are gonna read this message, but I still want to write this down. Because of this vlog, I bought the pedals. Firstly,I was disappointed because they didn't clip in, after riding for 10km, I realized you need to press it hard, especially for the outer sides (right side of right feet,and left side of left feet). Plus, put some oil would help. But I must say, if you are used to LOOK or Shimano, it takes time to get used to the new system.

I had the Speedplay Zero chrome-molys for around 2000kms before the cleats developed some play. I greased and cleaned them after every ride and despite this the cleats still wore out super quickly. I couldn't bring myself to spend around £60 on a new pair of cleats and so I sold it and went for the R8000 SPD-SL instead. I also ended up getting a pair of winter shoes and a winter bike and so being able to buy cheaper cleats and pedals for that while keeping everything compatible was a huge plus for me.
Might've been a different story had I got these pedals!
You can now find cheep Speedplay Zero cleats on eBay that are China copies. Unfortunately, no cheep China Speedplay model X cleats. :-(

Hey guys, for anyone having problems with these, make sure you have the C-clip facing the correct way and also stretch the C-clip with pliers or vice. I had to stretch mine by quite a bit before I could clip in and out. Hope that helps.

Great review Luke .... I've been using Speedplay Zero pedals with longer spindles for the last twenty years now, and would be loathe to even contemplate using anything else at this stage. I was curious about trying a set of these Alibaba knock-off's for ages now. The c-clips on Speedplay cleats appear to be made of a hi-tensile spring steel, where the ones replica pedals have titanium c-clips... I'n all my years of riding Speedplay Zero's, I've never broken a c-clip although I always carry a spare one in my seatpack just in case..
Unfortunately the Speedplay as a brand has gone to the dogs ever since It was acquired by Wahoo last year...
I've had a pair of second hand speedplays. One of the con's is they will gradually wear out and allow your foot to tilt outward without noticing. After moving to flat Shimano cleats, it was so nice to not be riding around on clapped cleats for a few months.
Honestly, cleat covers feature is the second best feature in my opinion lol. I can't tell you how hard it is to walk with Look cleats for me. Awesome review mate, thanks a lot, will probably order a pair of these.

10:33 I hope that what I’m seeing is just mud and not the totally destroyed plastic housing. In any case that metal C clamp should not break easily as it doesn’t move that much. If it broke that’s indication of shoddy material used.
Right! It's the equivalent of a broken spring in any other pedal. It's nice that replacement is cheap, but still, it shouldn't happen, especially at 2000 miles.

I use Look cleats without the rubber sole, and they are OK for walking on most surfaces, with the only exception being ceramic tiles.
so far I’ve bought 4 Titanium set for my client bikes, the only major issue I’ve found is getting additional cleats when you have more than one pair of shoe or for replacement! I can’t get them to fit with the pedal!!! I’ve tried using the speedplay cleats but the fit is not so good, I have taken some measurements of the China pedal diameter (flat area before the chamfer) vs the Speedplay Zero 1.350”, and the China one is 1.385”. The 2 set of China cleats are perfect with the Speedplay Zero Pedal. I’ve contacted several sellers on Aliexpress on buying extra cleats with the pedal set that they sell, and everyone say NO NO NO...WTF???
so that has been my experience with these. The Speedplay Titanium are $300+ vs China Ti $75 with very similar weight, but if you can’t get replacement cleats then your out of luck. I’ve resorted to buying used Speedplay Zero alloy pedal and upgrading them with China Ti Spindle & plates for total cost of around $100, and this guaranteed that I can use real or China cleats.

@@yonseimatt my conclusion is that the cleats sold on Amazon and Aliexpress are made for Speedplay Zero pedals, the China pedals are about .035”-.040” larger than the Zero which makes them nearly impossible to clip in but fit perfectly on 6 different set of Zero pedals I’ve tried. I’m planning on taking the China pedal plates apart and grinding the diameter down a bit to match the Speedplay Zero.

Man gags at mountain biking, also rides in public wearing nothing but his underwear. 😂
The double-sided design is a huge difference, especially if you ride in traffic. Nothing worse than having a grumpy truck driver trying to kiss your butt when the light goes green, only to have your foot slip off the wrong side of a single-sided pedal and do a digger into the tarmac and send you over the bars. It seems even long-term experienced SPD-SL owners do the clip-in dab dance.
I've been a Speedplay user for many years, and will never go back to single-sided SPD-SL The action is also more like SPD-MTB, so less adaptation required when switching bikes.
You can reduce release tension by Dremeling the inside of the C a little. I agree low maintenance if you stay out of the dirt. On the cleat covers I use Shoo Goo to glue them in place. If you have to negotiate stairs (hello Sydney Harbour Bridge) a lot of walking will stretch the plastic. Shoo Goo keeps them in place, but they can still be pulled off and the polyurethane glue strippped off easily if you need to change a cleat spring.

I have Shimano 105 pedals for the last 8 months and am ready to replace my second pair of cleats. Wish I had known about these back then, I would have given them a shot, saved some money, and saved on pain from when I miss a clip-in at a greenlight and hit my 'soft tissue' on the seat.

A bit left field... but if you want winter lightweight bombproof pedals try Crank Brothers Eggbeater 3. A lot less stuff to go wrong plus easy to setup on a pair of mtb shoes like spd. I have been using them on the road bike as well as the mtb for about 10 years. Great video keep em cumin
I love my egg beaters, wish id have bought another pair rather than these, I can see them being very temperamental with the slightest bit of grit.

Great review, I changed from Look, to Speedplay then Shimano to Keywin before settling on the Keywins and that was 15 years ago!! Love the Siroko jerseys and their bibs look pretty good too, a shame that the XXL in the jersey is still 3 cm too narrow in the chest for this body, pity because I love their designs.

Yeah, so I ordered some and it was actually impossible to clip into them. I tried opening up the metal C-shaped ring, it helped a bit, but I've gone back to my Look Keo/Exustar pedals. They are a bit heavier but I can clip in + out bo problems.

OK, out of the box, they are exactly as advertised.
Incidentally, there isn't a left and right pedal. They are interchangeable.
I installed immediately, and found it not so smooth to clip in.
That has continued for the 120km I've done to date, road cycling.
And today, the right pedal started to develop a click.
After getting home soft pedaling, I found the red pedal lock system at the end of the axle is moving in and out along the axle about 4mm.
So there's obviously a loose nut or similar, inside.
I've taken off the black plastic cap on the lateral end, and tried to undo the 6 sided nut on the end of the axle, but haven't been able to shift it yet.
Will press on.......Needless to say, I think the pedals are shipped in an unsafe state....and would advise anyone buying them to strip them down, and to lube and retorque all components.
If they continue to give me trouble, I will get a refund. So, so far.....not rock frkn solid.....for moi.
200km later. OK, I resolved the loose right pedal issue. The black plastic cap on the outer end of the axle plays a key role in stopping the pedal sliding along the axle. It therefore should be fitted with loctite, which it wasn't at the factory.
As for the too tight clip in, I resolved that after watching a speedplay installation video.
Because these pedals are designed similarly, they need to be installed similarly.
There are no instructions on how to install Chinaplay pedals, so Trace might have shown how he installed them.
It is critical to only apply 2Nm of torque to the bolts that hold the lower metal plate to the plastic base. Speedplay actually say to tighten the bolts until you get resistance, then turn another 1/4 turn, and no more.
This ensures the C spring doesn't have excessive pressure preventing its correct function.
Speedplay also recommend oiling or greasing the cleat so the cleat/pedal clip in has less friction.
So the above fixes have made the pedals a lot more reliable for clipping in.
However, I have decleated a dozen times without intending to, so I am unwilling to get out of the saddle and pedal hard.
The cleat covers arrived yesterday, and these are as Trace says. They don't interfere with clipping in/out, and make walking on the cleats totally safe.
At this point, I would not recommend these pedals for stronger riders who get out of the saddle a lot.
I will work on a solution for unintended unclipping.
6 mths later at an average ~125km/week, some weeks hitting 300km.
I continued to have the end threaded plugs twist loose on both sides.
However, I resolved this by using plumbers tape on the threads.
I did this rather than use loctite, as the plugs are very thin and fragile, and I did not want to have to use a lot of force to remove them in the future.
Nevertheless, every few rides, I make sure I check the plugs are not winding loose. It is important they are tight as they hold the bearings in place.
The cleats are going very well. They have worn a little so now clip in reliably with little fuss.
Decleating is also very predictable and no fuss. I can twist my heel in or out, and get a quick release.
Bearings don't feel worn whatsoever.
I still do not trust the pedals to get out of the saddle and pedal like a crazy man.
Fortunately most of my cycling is on the flats.
I have the cleat covers, and they are a treat....just get off the bike at local cafe and walk care free.
They are holding up very well. no sign of failing yet, and I do walk on them more than most.

Another update after 12mths use:
The pedals and cleats are going fine.
The plumber's tape has stopped the unscrewing of the axle end caps, so no more problems with loose bearings.
The cleat covers have heaps of service life left in them, and work really well. I often pick up fruit and vege or stop at a cafe when out riding, and it is really nice not to slip around on concrete or have to walk funny.
I still don't get out of the saddle much. I am in my 60s, and cannot afford to fall off and break a bone.
Maybe 1 out of 20 times, I do not click in first time. But with a wriggle of the foot, this is overcome. As with the speedplay, I think these pedals require optimal set up to work perfectly - correct torque of cleats and a little lube at cleat/pedal interface.
Oh my gad! Got mine a week ago before your review. But mine is rebranded here in the Philippines called "Speedone" from a local shop. Got the titanium version too but pair of pedals is only 140g. Less 10g. They are all look the same. It cost 2.1k php or 43$ only

From a local bike shop here in the Philippines. Actually it already released way back 2018. This is already an older stock.
I had them. They are not nearly as good as speedplay (mine failed) but I will buy them again as the entire pedal/cleats cost the same as a pair of new speedplay cleats

I love the pedal part, not the cleat part so much. The spring in the cleat broke after a few hundred miles making my shoe completely stuck to the pedal. If others have not had problems with the spring then go for it!

On ebay now, the name is "pave". I used this type of cleat with my Speedplay x series and one broke after 2000 miles. Have extras on hand for sure.
Just one thing to point out.... AliExpress now charge VAT on anything under £135 since start of the year. They have to by law...probably because of UK leaving the EU.
