      My sister is recovering now from covid and pneumonia. She was critical, on ventilator and ECMO. They work well together, however not for prolonged periods. Glory be to God, the doctor's turned the ECMO off today and her O2 levels have remained stable. She's responding to her nurses and doctors. Still slightly sedated but doing better day by day. They paralyzed her body; coma last week so the machines could work for her. Now my sis is coming out of the woods, little by little; improving daily. Two weeks in hospital; one in ICU at one of the best hospitals in Atlanta. God is an awesome God. The prayers of the righteous availeth much. By grace and mercy she is alive and recovering; slowly but surely.

Almost a month in the hospital. Almost 2 weeks in ICU. She's rehabbing, up walking around, breathing treatments etc. Oxygen levels in range, glucose good, no organ damage etc. God, the nurses and doctor's who cared for my sis were amazing. They didn't give up on her when her body didn't react to the medicines. They told our family that she is a fighter! She battled it and kicked covid and pneumonia in the butt! The prayers of the righteous availeth much. Much love to the staff that are working 100 plus hrs weekly caring for all the covid virus patient's.

    Interesting to understand after seeing my mum on ecmo. She had VA ecmo and was kept completely sedated as her state was so fragile for almost a month. It's a simplified heart/lung machine...the technology is fairly old, it's been used since the late 50s/early 60s in cardiac bypass surgery...but what's new is the small size and the lower doses of blood thinners and reduced likelihood of bubbles in the blood...so there have been improvements in the technology, as well as environments where they are found. They are out of the OR now, and found in the ICU/ER and some EMS units can transport patients with these devices...quite fascinating...

    WHO official stated that China had high capacity to administer ECMO to COVID 19 patients which resulted in a lot of recoveries. In the U.S. ECMO is a luxury at limited hospitals, but hey we have the Space Force and we pay basketball players tens of millions of dollars to dribble a ball while our healthcare workers are dying from lack of basic gowns and respirators.

    • @dcentral
      @dcentral 4 года назад +1

      Jll Lihsa You might be correct. The more I read about the relationship between WHO director and Chinese government, I became suspicious that WHO was not being independent and was pushing pro-China narrative. The delay in calling a global pandemic, initial misinformation that the virus is not human to human transmitted or that’ it’s not airborne based on China’s data and not WHO analysis is troubling. There was a story today how a local funeral home in Wuhan received two shipments of 5,000 cremated remains each which would make China’s official death toll highly suspicious considering how wild the virus has spread and claiming lives in other countries who are under lockdown too.

    I think that the problem is the staffing required to safely operate these machines. In the US and Canada, two nurses are required for every three patients in ICU units using ventilators. ECMO requires a team of highly specialized doctors to use. With the pandemic in full force and the limited number of medical professionals available ECMO machines may not be practical or even possible.

    • @life_withl
      @life_withl 4 года назад +2

      Justo Torres That’s what I was thinking too. It’s a great technology - perhaps during non pandemic times. If education on these systems, and staffing was available to use it then great. But right now I feel like we need to use what more are familiar with perhaps?

    If there was ever a sever shortage could CPAP devices provide any assistance for people in need of respirators? I know it wouldn’t be perfect but would it help at all? Maybe with the settings tweaked or something. I mean if CoV-19 is going to cause extreme shortages maybe it would be worth looking at?

    • @nickisnyder3450
      @nickisnyder3450 4 года назад +5

      Help at all? This is 1000 times Better than a venilator for Covid patients. The covid sufferer has lungs full of fluid...so you can blow air in all day until the cows come home but the oxygenation is not happening! The air is not coming in contact with the blood at the aveoli level. Every time I hear them on TV talking about needing ventilators I want to shout at the screen that what they need are ECMO machines. You are right on in your realizing this is what we need now during covid outbreak! I am a hospital RN...btw

    • @zee1645
      @zee1645 4 года назад +4

      Nicki Snyder i dont understand why would CPAP be superior than a ventilator by 1000 times. The COVID initially causes interstitial pneumonitis, not a plug. If ventilators dont even work, CPAPs or a BiPAP which basically just provide a PEEP via a facial mask with limited capacity to deliver oxygen would do absolutely nothing.

      ECMO is better than ventilation because the patient can be alert and awake and they won't be intubated as with the ventilator. There is another option on the horizon. Multi stem cell therapy for patients with ARDS
      Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, wich is the leading cause of Covid deaths. This stem cell therapy is still in clinical trials. I hope this can be admi administered in the future before they do either ventilation or ECMO.

    ECMO is a last resort effort

    • @thecocksaysmoo
      @thecocksaysmoo 4 года назад

      @Maria S. ECMO is more dangerous than ventilators. Brain bleeding is a huge risk & the longer a patient is on ECMO, the more the risks increase. Doctors won't keep someone on EMCO for more than a few weeks at a time because of the morality & risks involved. EMCO is a last option. Many CDH children I know have died from complications, like, sever brain damage & the one's that I know that survived wound up profoundly deaf because of ECMO treatment. It's just really stressful on the body to be hooked up to a machine pumping your blood like that. You are in a medically induced comma on ECMO. That would not be something you'd want to be awake for 😣
