Meet Nick Taylor, a Khmer-American professional footballer born and raised in the United States. He previously played for Orlando City B in the MSL Next Pro and has recently moved to Cambodia to represent his homeland, where he signed a new contract with the Cambodian club Siev Rieng FC. Today, he shared his feelings about representing his country, participating in the Cambodian League, his experiences living in Cambodia, the challenges he faces as a Cambodian American in the country, and why he enjoys it here.
Just a minor correction, it's MLS Next. My 11yo son is currently playing for Albion Soccer Club in San Diego and his dream is to play for Cambodia's national team! Hoping to be able to get some advices from Nick Taylor :D!
I’m Laos and I used to be shy to talk Laos. I’m from east coast but stayed in Cali for a while where I learned more Laos. I wrote down stuff I didn’t understand and I was around all my laos people daily. I practiced to make not perfect but better. I used to get made fun of now people say I speak Laos pretty good. I was also born in US. You actually make me wanna learn to speak Khmer especially moving from NYC area to NC/SC area.
Nick, it is an important to speak your native language .if you are proficient in Khmer, it would bring you more opportunity. You just need to practice like you are playing football. You should embrace both cultures in American and Cambodian. Don’t be shy. Wishing you the best of luck in your career and in life !
Don’t give up Nick,I can understand your frustration. You speak Khmer very well. I know Khmers like to laugh because of your accent but don’t worry they are nice people they don’t laugh at you they laugh with you.
The best thing for is to practice speaking everyday to everyone, you will get better. Nick Taylor, you’re look like young Ricky Iglesias . Handsome young man.
Awesome video Austin! I'd suggest remove the background music for these types of long commentary/podcast like this. It will be easier for the audience to focus on the guest. Amazing video as always!!!
I left the country alone in 1979 after surviving the genocide and most of my family members did not live. I've returned to visit the country every year for the last ten years since my retirement from US. I also have some businesses to run and help some needy people there. Cambodia has come a long way since the civil war was officially ended in 1998. Wish Nick all the best with his brighter future. Peace from a genocide survivor ✌️
Very awesome story my country Cambodia is the best we don't have war we don't have earthquake we don't have much bad thing welcome to Cambodia Khmer handsome Star all thank you guys for sharing video I wishing you all the best in life live healthy life good luck to you all God bless you all 🙏😇🙏👌👏👍🍀🫶🍀🫶🍀🫶
He’s reminded me of my sons. I’m Khmer and my husband is Irish American. So basically they’re raised as an American. They’re wrestlers and boxers coached by their dad of course. My youngest is into MMA. I hope one day they would want to take a chance going there to Cambodia and represent Khmer also. Congratulations on your success🙏 thank you for sharing God bless
I think the prices of Cambodian food and other commodities are high because of the mix of U.S. dollars with Khmer riel. It creates this psychological phenomenon that it's okay for Khmer vendors to charge people more. I recommend people practice haggling to get the best price possible. Another commenter said that a lot of things in Cambodia are imported, which is true. Perhaps, if Cambodia invested in manufacturing, they wouldn't have to import as much which would allow prices to drop a little.
My advise for the foreigner who to learn to speak Khmer, first you start learning alphabets and vowels, as long as you pronounce them correct as they should be, then your accent to Khmer language will be improved.
I know how you feel cuz I’m Cambodia and it is bit diff cuz my friends make fun of my name to😢 Well I know how to speak English and mostly people can to in Cambodia maybe you should go to differ city in cam they have Siemreap kom phong Cham and more and they have a lot of waterfall❤
What about the ones that are Chinese/vietnamese mix? What do yoou call them? What about the millions of Chinese/Vietnamese in Cambodia? Do you call them Khmer? I bet you are one of them.
It will come naturally if one chooses to live in a different country with different language. Just look at the Chinese and Vietnamese in Cambodia. It’s natural to absorb the culture snd language once you live there for so long.
everything is more expensive because we don't produce anything and because of high logistic costs to import goods. this is the reason we are building the techo funan canal
Regarding Khmer language, just speak more bro and you’ll get better. Cambodians don’t expect your Khmer to be perfect. In fact, they expect your Khmer to be broken. It would be very strange if you speak perfect Khmer to them. So, keep practicing it and if people laugh, it’s not intended to embarrass you. It’s a laughter to acknowledge that you’re a foreigner. Enjoy Cambodia and your heritage!
It should be a two-way street, not one. Their ancestry is tied with us. If they want to abandon their history, that is up on them. We're not the ones who don't have a root. So there's nothing to worry about. We'll just keep being who we are: loving, understanding, and supportive.
And you why we know why our Cambodia has a bad reputation out there. It is not from the real tourists’s experience, It has been from the defaming attempts of that one nation who had invaded some land in the past and attempts to invade more as well as rob our culture while playing victim.
He is American lol but with Khmer ancestry. We are full Khmer Americans too, it’s ok not be both. Idk about his gf she is too plastic and surgery done, but to each their own.
Feel free to share your observation from the video 🙌🏾

The words he's spoken "We need you educated mixed Cambodia to help our country" was touching man😭💕
There’s plenty of mixed people in Cambodia. Even you have plenty of Chinese blood. Look in the mirror.

No you’re lying. YOUR KHMER ACCENT IS SO GOOD 👍👍
Enjoyed that?…music is a bit annoying
I hope one day he'll realized that the Khmer people are oppressed by the current government ruling 40 years now.
👍🇺🇸🇰🇭❤️
I’m sorry for U upset I understand what you says

Why don't you put Khmer language in your Video? 🇰🇭
Traffic in Cambodia is not good yet, to be honest.
Guess what guess what I'M CAMBODIA
Thailand wants Cambodia to be submissive to them. How can we have good relationships?

Food is more expensive than neighboring country might be because they bought it from them.
Making comments regarding things that you don't know anything about makes you look foolish.
your khmer pronunciation is very native, Nick. Maybe u should unleash ur language potential and give it another shot.
I don’t think food in Cambodia expensive in Thailand their food cost way more than in Cambodia 🇰🇭 😂
Ah your girlfriend is a Singer, what is her name again? hhhmmm... You are both are so a beautiful couple ❤🎉🙏
