Join me as we tour the city in this video to get some very 1st impressions of Saigon and of Vietnam in general. Let's meet some people, try some food and feel the vibes of Ho Chi Minh City.

    Hello, I am Vietnamese. Actually, in Vietnam, they mainly sell birds to locals, not foreign tourists. You can often see them being sold in front of temples with the purpose of creating "merit" - a Buddhist concept that aims to release captive creatures and grant blessings to those who perform this act. According to Buddhist belief, this act can bring about good fortune. You can also randomly buy fish or turtles from the market to release them into nature for the same purpose.

    I have watched other RUclipsrs to travel to Ha Long Bay and Da Nang, where are beautiful, I suggest you go there also!
    That temple is called "上公廟", and the characters are now called Mandarin. The word "Chinese" is no longer used, because China no longer uses traditional Chinese!
    上公 is 黎文悅. To put it simply, he is a local hero, he has a Chinese adopted son who is in charge of the trade between the two countries.
    Because of his contribution to the local area, later generations built a temple to commemorate and thank him!
    I know Cranes and tortoises are representatives of longevity in Eastern culture, and they are symbols of auspiciousness wherever they appear! But I am not sure is that bird a crane.
    The street food at the end looked delicious, and the warmth of the locals convinced me that a smile is the best language! You did a really great job, thanks a lot for sharing!👍😄👏

Interesting tour around that beautiful temple. That crane standing together with the tortoise represent a healthy long life of happiness. It's amazing to meet that group of friendly youngsters with their colourful Vietnamese traditional clothes. Vietnamese baguette and street food BBQ look yummy. It's understandable why English isn't spoken as widely there as other countries...whilst Vietnam was busy fighting wars (it's a country riddle with war in it's history, unlike Thailand or the Philippines), other countries enjoy peace and allowed US military bases or had a history of British colonization. However, the younger kids are starting to learn English more.

      @@maxlol1173 Hi Max. HCM was a down trodden city at that time. War was a ll around. When I look at the recent videos of the city I'm so happy that the people are and are recovering from the ravages of the past. The French, the Vietnam War, having to oust Pot Pol from Cambodia, disagreements with the Chinese, lots of conflicts preventing Vietnamese society from prospering. Finally, the economic embargo was lifted in the mid 90's. The Vietnamese are good people and at this time the young people of Vietnam don't have be too concerned about combat coming to their doorsteps. Many parts of HCM City look beautiful and I'm pleased to see that.

    Jasmine tea.. 😁 Actually, Thailand in general is pretty clean, come to think of it. Almost no trash anywhere. Compared to Malaysia and Indonesia - rural West Malaysia is REALLY bad. People just seem to throw garbage everywhere. East Malaysia is different, I've stayed at an Iban longhouse (way out in the middle of nowhere) and there was NO garbage lying around. People do tend to collect garbage in Indonesia, but they burn it right there, plastics included. What REALLY impresses me about Thailand is the toilets - REALLY clean, if you're used to Malaysian ones. (One thing I didn't know - but I learned from RUclips.. 😁is that in Thailand you can always find public toilets in temples... )

      Haven't read all the replies so not sure if others have answered your questions, but I'll try:
      1) I'm not Buddhist though so this might be incorrect, but in Vietnam, people buy birds and fish to release because they believe it will being good karma to them, it's called Phóng Sanh
      2) China used to dominate Vietnam for thousands of years, because of that influence, we used to write in Chinese characters, but we have different spoken language. Until the French came to Vietnam, then they brought Roman letters to us, they actually helped us create our written language now that's not characters. We're the only country in Asia that uses Roman letters and not characters
      3) Until recently, English was not the chosen language to teach in school, Russian was. That's why a lot of older generation do not speak English well. Find younger people and they are more than likely to speak English to help you. In the last 20 years Vietnam started to understand English is the language to interact with outside world and has started to teach more in schools is what i heard
      Have a good time in Vietnam, i haven't been back for 20 years and i left since 1994 so it's fun seeing Saigon again

    Welcome back to VN my friend . Hope you will enjoy more this current trip than the previous one . During the Covid period , people were more cautious and nervous so why your first visit in North Vietnam was not very pleasant . BTW how did you know this district . Ba Chieu is actually a very local area , not many tourists come here so why most of the vendors don't speak English . FYI in VN the turtle is one of the four sacred animals ( Dragon , Lion/Unicorn ,Turtle and Phoenix) in our mythology . It's the symbol of longevity, hard working and resilience , so why this animal is always present in pagodas , temples or mausoleums, carrying on its back either an heron or a stele meaning everlasting devotion to Buddha , the deities or the buried person in the tomb .
    One advice for you : just be careful with your valuables like camera , bag , wallet , Iphone , watch , etc...while strolling in those low-end districts because after the pandemic many people here are jobless and financially not too good . So they might try to do some reprehensive things to make their living . Don't tempt the Devil . It's better be safe than sorry . Are you planning to explore more regions in the South and the Center of VN . I highly recommend you to check-out the Mekong delta , Phu Quoc island , Con Dao island , Nha Trang , Dalat , the Central Highlands (Tây Nguyen) , Da Nang , Hoi An , Hue and Phong Nha/Ke Bang .
    Have a nice and safe trip in Vietnam Bro .

    From my understanding, Vietnam used to be part of China and then gained independence so there are a lot of remains of Chinese governs there, I’m not sure if you can say that is not Chinese, cause usually when I consider British remains in the colonies, I’d say that’s still a British building rather than part of the local culture, but people may have different thoughts on that.

    Love your vlog, thank you for the great videos! As for the birds on the street - it's a Buddhist tradition to buy and release the birds to earn "good karma" points. Unfortunately, some people use this as an opportunity to make money. They capture the birds, sell them for release, and often recapture them again. Of course, knowing that I personally would still release them anyway!

    Hell yes Ken Vietnam is my favorite country is SE Asia! I am excited to see where you go! Not to be mean or anything, but just so you know, those birds you pay to release usually fly back to the cage to get “freed” by another tourist. Weird tourist scam thing haha but it’s not a scam if you enjoying holding it and letting it fly! Keep making content Ken I love your channel!

    • @Crafterasher
      @Crafterasher Год назад +1

      It’s true. The birds are meant to be sold to the locals, particularly those who believe in Buddhism. It’s a religious belief that releasing a live bird brings merits. It’s not meant as a scam.

    • @KenAbroad

      I'd say it's pretty similar. As soon as you leave the tourist areas, the level of English gets quite low, at least among the older generations

    Usually the same bird will return and fall into the same trap and get resold again. You did not really buy freedomm for the bird. To answer your question, Vietnamese believe this will bring good luck. You will see them selling birds near budha temples

  • @Crafterasher
    @Crafterasher Год назад

    The writing on the temple most likely not Chinese. It’s the old ancient Vietnamese writing. It looks like mandarin but it’s ancient Vietnamese characters before the transformation to the current writing.

      It's Traditional Chinese, just like Japan, and Korea, Vietnam is also one of the Sinophere countries (heavily influenced by Chinese culture). Before the 19th century, Vietnam used Chinese characters for official writing language, so even now you still can see Chinese characters in some ancient buildings in Vietnam...
