I've always felt that in sprint finishes, it's the sprinter's job to be there or there-abouts on the wheels of their leadout riders. This frequent looking back and subsequent sudden pulling up/out, can be dangerous. A bazillion years ago in a smaller pro/am road race in New Jersey I was a Cat 2 with leadout duties on my team. Coming into the finish I was on the front and I had the field strung out. I give a quick glance and see the Navigators pro team on my wheel. I had to trust that "my guy" was close enough, and so I kept on the gas if for no other reason than to keep things safer for the field there at the front.

Chris, you are the best play by play sports announcer and sport strategist! Why are you not on the Tour coverage, I would be so much more exciting.

Interesting ride by Bora. Do you have any word on their tactic? They stayed at the back right behind a main part of peloton where there’s more room.

It just wasn't Alpecin's day. Coming into the final stretch, Mathieu having a mechanical and Jasper getting held up due to a crash.

Amazing win for Girmay, a bit messy for the pure sprinters lined up behind him, timed to perfection.

Curious that MVDP couldn't catch the peloton after his bike change. I assume the DS told him to forget it because Jasper was held up from that crash, so there was no point wasting energy if Jasper didn't need a lead out. I'm not clear on the timeline of how all of this unfolded.

He tried, and came down to 33 seconds at one point but then they went so fast the gap grew again, and he gave up with 2-3 km to go iirc

The peloton rides at 65 km/h at that point, no rider on his own can close that gap of 45 seconds anymore.... Since the rider will need to ride at 70 km/h for several km's... And nobody can do that....

VERY interesting to see how long the 'dark horse' Carapaz can hold on to the yellow jersey~🤔
