Good & easy AF recipe. Thanks! I've just tested it without adding artificial colour, and with brown sugar instead of white, and it turned out beautiful brown. This is the recipe I've been looking for. Ketchup brown sugar recipes is what I grew up on everytime mom tried homemade Chinese food. I know there are ketchup brown sugar sauces in commercial kitchens too but I have never been to one that made decent food. Working in Chinese restaurants, I knew the recipe was something close to this one. One thing the restaurant did that I will try, is they started by making a citrus broth. Basically boiling a greater ratio of orange halves to lemon halves. After removing fruit they would then add sugar then thicken with starch slurry. Not sure of the fruit ratios as they were making 5 gallon batches but it was definitely the more common one most people think of. Thanks for the recipe.

Nice recipe! Its good to see these without ketchup. The Chinese restaurant I used to go to used black vinegar, chicken stock, sugar and soy sauce for their sweet and sour sauce. I was told that this is how they make it in China, no ketchup required.
I am old enough to recall when you used to get pineapple, carrot slices, pickles, and an occasional green pepper chunk in the take away container with this sauce. Standard items for S&S Chicken but bonus for when it was given as a dip for Rangoons. Additions I might add when using this recipe on my own. Fantastic to see a video from you. Love your teaching style!
Fantastic recipe & spot on, well done. For those that are interested in my making this more Keto or Low Carb Friendly, you can substitute the sugar for 1/4 cup monk fruit sweetner & 1/4 cup bochasweet, you can also substitute the corn starch for 1/4 teaspoon of Xanthan Gum, Xanthan is a little trickier to use over corn starch as the liquid need to be whisked & the gum needs to be sprinkled in while constantly whisking until fully blended. Thanks again for the wonderful content!

Hello! OMG! Yes indeed. I searched several times today for this sauce and got some very complex recipes or didn't have all the ingredients. After I made my home made crab ragoons I decided to look one more time before eating them as is AND lool at here. ALL the ingredients were basic itmes around the kitchen and I honestly though...no way is this going to be good. I also thought what do I have to lose. I made and to my astonishment it was just like the restaurants... flabbergasted. Thank you so much...you satisfied and completed my super.
Pretty much sugar water indeed. Restaurants have a very narrow profit margin so keeping food costs down is a top priority. And considering Americans go through sweet and sour sauce like ketchup, they need to make it cheap. There is no room for special or expensive ingredients. The fewer and cheaper the better.
Just use apricot sauce Apple sauce Apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar, or lime juice, soy sauce, and seracha sauce for heat!! Yum!! No added sugar! And the secret ingredient, a touch of Maggie seasoning. All the Chinese restaurants use it. It’s American. Just make apricot and Apple sauce the main ingredients and add the rest as u like. Taste test as you go. Let me know how it worked out. 🌼🌝😊
I just now found this video and it is the MOST WONDERFUL sweet and sour sauce…so simple…so quick….love love love this recipe❤️❤️❤️THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH for sharing this.
Just recently found you. My mouth was watering just looking at the many options of recipes. Going shopping today to get the items I need for your sweet and sour sauce and eggroll recipes. Will be using red wine vinegar in the sauce, and making my own wraps. I am a very good cook, and you are the only cook/chef I have subscribed to based on the several videos I've watched. Thank you! Unlike most other's cooking videos which I often think, "oh no", and leave, yours get watched all the way through.
Hi there CC I have enjoyed your videos for years now and like all your others this one is very good but with One Big Difference. Due to the cost of food here in California 2021, I am now cooking more than ever to cut food costs so my wife loves Sweet and Sour dishes and I'm a very good cook and pastry and baker as well. I learned from my family in France I live there over13 and they own a bakery "Boulanger" But as I said in this video that I like very much have One Bid Difference. I looked at ALL THE OTHER SWEET & SOUR videos and They ALL use Ketchup in their recipes. Even so, I am still going with YOUR RECIPE. It is better looking in clarity and extremely simple to make. Thanks, CC
I'm a pineapple hater, and the only sweet & sour recipe I've ever had is one with pineapple in it. For years now, I've been on the hunt for a pineapple-less sweet & sour sauce and thanks to you, I found it! Respect!
Thank you so much for this! I'm using this sauce for my Filipino Pork Lumpia that I'm selling. It's even better that it doesn't need any special ingredients to make this. It's so good...😋
My favorite Chinese restaurant used to serve "cold sauce" which was this mixed with applesauce and chilled. It was SO good on egg rolls! I think it's because of the mixture of cabbage and apple. Try it asap!
Funny you mention the mixture of cabbage and apple... we make red cabbage and it's a German side dish you might pair with mashed potatoes and some kind of sausage for the meat. The liquid it is cooked in is APPLE CIDER. It sounds odd, but it is FANTASTIC. Basically you cut up 2 pieces of bacon and put in the pot at a higher heat and once it gets some brown on it you turn the burner down and throw in half an onion that you chopped up earlier and cook until onions are translucent. Then you put in the chopped up red cabbage, 2 bay leaves, 5 cloves, a spoon full of apple cider vinegar, and then use apple cider for the liquid. The cabbage will cook down, so you don't need as much liquid as the think you do. Then you just cook it for a long time with the lid on, stirring every now and again, until your cabbage cooks waaay down and is soft. I'll have to try this cold sauce out with the leftovers from making the sweet and sour sauce!
I was always thinking that this sauce have pineapple juice inside. At the Chinese restaurant were I go have pieces of pineapple inside. I'm crazy for crabs with this sauce and I'm happy now that FINALLY!!!!!# I found the correct recipe. Thank you
Thank you so much! You don't know how tired I am of looking for a recipe for this and seeing ketchup in the ingredient list! Sweet & Sour sauce should definitely not be tomatoey! Thank you, thank you!
I know this is a 2018 vid but I made this sauce today and I can honestly say, it tastes just like my local chinese takeaway sweet n sour sauce in England. Very Very Pleased with this thank you!!!
Thanks SO much for this ! Tired of saving the packets from takeout lol . BTW your Mexican rice is the absolute BEST ! What brand is that saucepan, I’ve seen a few people using bowl shaped smaller pans lately. Looks like they work well for this kind of thing.
Glad you enjoyed the Mexican rice recipe! The sauce pan I used in this video is an All-Clad 1 quart 'saucier' pan. It stays on my stove top because I use it nearly every day. It's the perfect size for making sauces, melting butter, heating up water for hot cocoa, etc. Probably the most used pan of all the pans I own.
This was pretty good. They stopped selling the non-ketchup based bottled sauces here so I was desperate for a replacement and this comes really close even without the red dye. Was maybe a bit sweet but that could be because I used rice vinegar.
Super Easy!! a super easy BrownSauce is equal parts Soy Sauce, Sugar (brown sugar works better) and Mirin the rice cooking wine, bring to a boil and slow simmer until thickened, multipurpose just like the Red Sauce. Good Eatin'!!!
The Chinese way to make it is mix dark and light soy sauce, sugar, shaoxing wine (Chinese yellow wine), water, and chicken stock or msg. Pour that onto your stir fried contents in a wok/etc. and simmer it, thus braising. Near the end, add a little slurry of starch and water to thicken the sauce. That’s called making “Hong shao” or “red/brown braised” dish, and it what they mean when they say a dish is “in brown sauce”.
Just tried it for the first time. It works well but I might reduce the sugar a bit next time. As recommended, I made sweet & sour chicken with it. Thank-you.😀👍

ALL the ingredients were basic itmes around the kitchen and I honestly though...no way is this going to be good. I also thought what do I have to lose. I made and to my astonishment it was just like the restaurants... flabbergasted.
Thank you so much...you satisfied and completed my super.
Omg. Just made this. Thank you thank you. Tasts just like it should:) it made my family and myself very happy 😊
I love the fact it's simple with very few ingredients. Definitely going to give this a try and I'll let you know how I got on.
So it's really basically sugar water lol
I'm gonna give it a try though, planning on cooking some asian food for new years eve
Pretty much sugar water indeed. Restaurants have a very narrow profit margin so keeping food costs down is a top priority. And considering Americans go through sweet and sour sauce like ketchup, they need to make it cheap. There is no room for special or expensive ingredients. The fewer and cheaper the better.
forgot the vinegar
He clear as day put white vinegar in there
Toniesha Cooper I’m pretty sure they are aware of that...But the main ingredients are sugar and water which is what gives the sauce it’s texture
Just use apricot sauce
Apple sauce
Apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar, or lime juice, soy sauce, and seracha sauce for heat!!
I made this and it turned out amazing! 👍🏻Would recommend. ❤️
Thanks for this one, I will try it. I already gave the recipe a thumbs up however, because I like to live dangerously!
Thank you so much for this straightforward recipe. I just made it and cannot believe how easy and spot-on it was. Mind blown!
I've just made this and it tastes EXACTLY like the restaurant version!
Thank you!
Well done! Concise, simple and to the point. Plus you even put it in writing! Must be a professional.
Great!! I always wanted to make my own! This looks really good and easy.
Thanks, CC
Tried this yesterday and it was sooooo delicious!! Thankyou 😋😋🙌🏻
*The best recipe by far!*
I was reluctant to add soy sauce and salt, but it really needed it to tone down the sugar.
I love this recipe, I can't get enough of it.
Your recipe is the best I always use yours I'm having egg rolls tonight and I needed sauce and there you are so thank you again stay safe
I'm a pineapple hater, and the only sweet & sour recipe I've ever had is one with pineapple in it. For years now, I've been on the hunt for a pineapple-less sweet & sour sauce and thanks to you, I found it! Respect!
This is LEGIT! Mine turned out pink cause I used the wrong food color I guess, but the taste is spot on 👌🏻👌🏻 I added a tsp of vinegar
HAAAANNNNK

Nailed It! I have been looking for this recipe for ever, now my life is complete thank you.
I just found your recipe for crab rangoons from 6 years ago. I can't wait to make both.
Thanks.
Thank you
This is delicious, followed the recipe exactly and it’s amazing
Thank you so much! You don't know how tired I am of looking for a recipe for this and seeing ketchup in the ingredient list! Sweet & Sour sauce should definitely not be tomatoey! Thank you, thank you!

Aldi 4 pack of egg rolls doesn't come with sweet n sour sauce..Just made a quarter of your recipe in minutes. Thanks again.
So happy to see you posting again! You’re so talented.
You are absolutely correct it's the best I use only yours it is delicious I love it egg rolls wontons oh yeah thanks again
I just made it and I love it. Thanks for sharing
That is the best sauce ever thank you so much
This was pretty good. They stopped selling the non-ketchup based bottled sauces here so I was desperate for a replacement and this comes really close even without the red dye. Was maybe a bit sweet but that could be because I used rice vinegar.
yah use regular white vinegar
Thank you for sharing I thought that it was more difficult making this sauce but is a piece of cake thank you again
Super Easy!! a super easy BrownSauce is equal parts Soy Sauce, Sugar (brown sugar works better) and Mirin the rice cooking wine, bring to a boil and slow simmer until thickened, multipurpose just like the Red Sauce. Good Eatin'!!!
Ooooohhh!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍 This sounds VERY INTERESTING!!.... What do you eat/pair with this sauce?
What do you use the sauce for?
The Chinese way to make it is mix dark and light soy sauce, sugar, shaoxing wine (Chinese yellow wine), water, and chicken stock or msg. Pour that onto your stir fried contents in a wok/etc. and simmer it, thus braising. Near the end, add a little slurry of starch and water to thicken the sauce. That’s called making “Hong shao” or “red/brown braised” dish, and it what they mean when they say a dish is “in brown sauce”.
This recipe is amazing! My husband, my mother and I all loved it! 💕 thank you so much for posting
This sauce is delicious! Thank you!
Just tried it for the first time. It works well but I might reduce the sugar a bit next time. As recommended, I made sweet & sour chicken with it. Thank-you.😀👍
My kids and I absolutely love your channel! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching!
Popping in 3 years later to say thanks for this! As close to restaurant style as you can get and was so easy and delicious!
