The RAF used them in Afghanistan for Medevac or MERT (Medical Emergency Response Team). Standard 4 man crew (2 pilots, 2 Loadmasters) a full trauma team (Surgeon, Anaesthetist, Nursing Officer, a couple of Paramedic) and a 4 man Force Protection team to secure the Landing zone when they made the pick up. Saved a lot of lives.
One of the most awful experiences of my life... being flown in a Chinook from RAF Aldergrove to a field on the border in Fermanagh, full blackout. After landing in the field, we each ran out, weapons loaded (not made ready) and lay beside our corresponding infantryman from RGJ (I think?) in all round protection, as they jumped up, got on the Chinook and headed home. We lay there in the damp grass for about 15 minutes as the famous sound of the blades faded, heads were counted and bricks were patrolled out to the barracks, our home for the next five months. Mind you, I wouldn't swap the experience for anything. Thanks for the video lesson! Stay safe out there
Flew on one many a time in both Afghanistan and the Falklands. Most startling experience of my life was in one coming back to Camp Bastion when, without warning, the crew fired off a LOT of flares. Fearing we were about to be shot down, it made of a nervy few minutes to landing. Later discovered that the airframe was going in for servicing and the safest way to deflare it was to simply fire them off! So we weren't about to be shot down by a legacy CIA-provided Stinger passed from the Mujahadeen to the Taliban after all...
A little tip for axis assignment: controls that don't reallly have a midpoint, like the wheelbrakes, are ideally set as "Slider", which makes its curve go differently. In some planes, the brakes are very sensitive, so making the curve shallow can improve controllability
In 1999 i flew many times in the Chinook with the Royal Netherlands Air Force in Albania and to Kosovo to deliver medical supplies and other goods to refugee camps for Operation Allied Harbour. With a crew of 3 OGRV (Airforce Object Ground Defence) responsible for securing the landing zone when the wheels hit the ground. You dont want the blades to chop a volunteer or even worse a kid who runs curious to the chopper. What a mighty beast this is, being squeezed in your strappy seat when vertically taking off on max collective, going low and fast through mountaino areas, even lifting very old ex-iron curtain choppers to make way for other AFOR choppers on the airfield we were stationed. Great to see it now as a module in DCS. And h*ll it can do some funky moves.
Big Windy! I love that this helo is in DCS. The first time I loaded a CH-47 onto a C-17, I just didn't believe it would fit, despite the fact that it had been done hundreds if not thousands of times before! It took about 2 hours the first time, but by the time we got to number 40 we had it down to about 45 minutes.

But also would be nice to see some of the MSFS simmers coming into DCS for logistics too. Many thanks.

Hey @Grim Reapers, make the drag race one more time bc you did it the wrong way and completely out of schtyyle (as the late good old Sean Connery would have said). This time do it without the DAFCS enabled. Fun fact: First night out with our lovely lady Chinook, she was quite a handful with the system turned off. Guess I got a few extra grey hairspots..

When the Helicopter is moving forward, there is a point in the Blades Rotation where they are moving with the direction of travel, slowing them down relative, then when it's moving away from the direction of travel it breaks the sound barrier
I was watching a video that had a Chinook in it for a wreck removal, the pilot talked about the chopper and said a few things that I never knew. They've got 3 engines (1 is a pony) but can fly full of people on one. Over 2000 horse power. To fly legally in the military it needs a minimum of 3 crew and 2 for civilian use. And I think the one in DCS is the luxury version because normally they don't have the fabric insulation inside. Personally I'd love to own one, but it's where to park it. 😆

Like most of our community, I eagerly awaited the arrival of the ED CH-47F and was naturally disappointed when at the last minute and despite some obvious clues which, with hindsight should have prepared me, it’s release was delayed. No need for me to point out the obvious shortcomings of any company that spins up hopes and expectations and yes, misleads their customers with disinformation, lack of information and so on. We are where we are as they say. So the CH-47F finally graces us old fashioned kids, with its arrival. Yes there are some real positives about the ‘Hook’ but unfortunately any number of positives are overlooked in the face of a few negatives - that’s a fact. Anyway, I have watched quite a few vids on the ‘Hook’ and all I can say is that I must have a different install to everyone else. The most common phrase ‘easy to fly’ is absolutely not my experience. I know how to fly DCS choppers and this one is terrible. Yes I know about trimming (1st time I heard of it on the collective though, sorry ‘thrust’, depending on which ED content you watch and by the way, bind the Thrust Brake switch on the Thrust Control Lever grip to then depress, to move the Thrust Control Lever or collective across its axis - well makes no difference as the collective moves over the axis regardless. Furthermore and despite @BritishAvgeek telling us to make sure we bind a key to the Centering Device Release (CD REL) button to depress when moving the Cycliq over it’s axis, well that does not work either. For the Cycliq you actually need to bind the force trim function and that does work. By default the Cycliq Trim is set to Auto and the System Sel set to ‘Both’ but that makes absolutely no difference to the flight behaviour. So either take off in a rolling take-off or a hover, increase the thrust appropriately and tilt the nose down no more than 2 in on the Longitudinal Stick Position Indic and it flies ok, for a few seconds, then pitches violently up or down and you can be sure if you look at the trimmed position on the little trim overlay, the Cycliq has not moved. Ok, so provided I am high enough, it’s possible to recover using some violent stick movement; settle down, apply force trim then it‘s erratic behaviour will rinse repeat again within seconds or the engine just cuts out. Other aircraft I have purchased previously were not in the early days of EA other than the Apache and that was fine from day one. In my view the ‘it’s in EA’ card doesn’t fly here as it’s sadly lacking some basic flight control and for the life of me I can’t fathom why no one else is griping about this.
