It's not really the hot water that will felt the yarn. It's mostly the combination of hot water and friction that can destroy it. I don't mean use boiling water either, but lukewarm water is fine. The main recommendations are : don't twist/move your knits around too harshly while washing and no drastic change of water temperature between the washing and rinsing 😊
Even your hottest tap water is fine, as long as there's no agitation. I run the water until it's hot, use a tiny squish of dish soap, then add the knitting and don't touch until it's fully cold. Andrea Mowry's advice.
