- Palermo, the capital of the Italian island of Sicily at the heart of the Mediterranean, has been a crossroads between cultures for centuries and continues to do so today.
Sicily is one of the southern-most points of Europe and the different conquerers and cultures which reigned there have all left a mark - not least on the food.
"I think every culture, every people that has come here and that has conquered Sicily has left its imprint - not only on the architecture but also on the cooking," says food historian Mary Taylor.
In this episode of Street Food, we explore how in a city where cooking is an art form, past influences and modern challenges have an effect on the local cuisine.
Editor's note: This film was first broadcast on Al Jazeera English in 2008.
"It's really nice. And it tastes great!"
Seriously? That's your description of a gourmet, signature dish in a world class restaurant, prepared by the featured chef just for you?
she's very arrogant!
🤣
I've been to Italy 18 times, never been to Sicily or Sardinia, would like to visit both
Thanks for the great video and effort.
Thank you for the video, it was great! Next year I go to Palermo, this year I went to Napoli, last year I went to Rome, and I love the people from Italy who I respect, and I want to see so much. I think this part of the world is amazing, and I can not wait to come back. Love from the UK.
I must visit Palermo now.
A big thing I miss about not living in Europe is the architecture. At 2:30 You can see the detailed water-fountain, same with the facade of the building behind it, old -school looking street lamp too. Europe's nice for those lol
i wish the show was less in history and more about street foods
karan karan food is about history, buddy.
Ooooo you said arancino instead of arancina. Them fight words in palermo
so much ignorance in this comments...
Enzo Ciao completely agree... many Americans around, you know!
Ciao bravo grazie Mille
Great Palermo
Italy and France - the only western countries with great, decent cuisines.
you haven't travelled Europe that much, have you?
hélas, trop souvent.
Sicily is not Italy
Leo XIV Giuseppe garibaldi conquered Sicily to join Italy.... try not to assume stuff if you don’t know)
Faux Manchu
You attend your local psychiatric clinic of course.
Dinner Italian Best sicilia
would've been better if the host knew how to describe food and not just keep saying this is "very good". take some notes from Anthony bourdain
CDN R Bourdain was dedicated all his life to food... this woman is just showing some of the daily life is Sicily, including talking about the mafia involvement in food.
Arancina comunque
I thought it was about street food but made a 360 to the mafia. Wtf 😳
ciao from the PH
Fabolous
no need for dubbing, subs is enough!
Dismay some bitter comments
I'm getting hungry
A pity that she does not say clearly what she is eating and discussing. The first dish for example were involtini (I could see) from goat meat (she said?). Then she bought an arancino a rice ball which can be filled with almost anything. I think I even saw pass before my eyes a panino con porchetta (not really Sicilian). Anyhow I got irritated and i'll watch it again when I have more patience. Being part Italian myself I am curious what she comes up with.
The mafia bit makes me cringe. 😖
"So then what meat /do/ the poor people of modern Polermo eat?"
"They don't."
this woman is so irritating. surely they can find someone more genuine to do this!
first one to comment and like
She sounds like Sofia vergara:-)
Eleonora Scifo don’t make ridiculous assumptions or worthless comments, instead... say something important about the topic.
is she italian?
She sounds English
Why do you care?
