  • Palermo, the capital of the Italian island of Sicily at the heart of the Mediterranean, has been a crossroads between cultures for centuries and continues to do so today.
    Sicily is one of the southern-most points of Europe and the different conquerers and cultures which reigned there have all left a mark - not least on the food.
    "I think every culture, every people that has come here and that has conquered Sicily has left its imprint - not only on the architecture but also on the cooking," says food historian Mary Taylor.
    In this episode of Street Food, we explore how in a city where cooking is an art form, past influences and modern challenges have an effect on the local cuisine.
    Editor's note: This film was first broadcast on Al Jazeera English in 2008.

    "It's really nice. And it tastes great!"
    Seriously? That's your description of a gourmet, signature dish in a world class restaurant, prepared by the featured chef just for you?

    Thank you for the video, it was great! Next year I go to Palermo, this year I went to Napoli, last year I went to Rome, and I love the people from Italy who I respect, and I want to see so much. I think this part of the world is amazing, and I can not wait to come back. Love from the UK.

    A big thing I miss about not living in Europe is the architecture. At 2:30 You can see the detailed water-fountain, same with the facade of the building behind it, old -school looking street lamp too. Europe's nice for those lol

    would've been better if the host knew how to describe food and not just keep saying this is "very good". take some notes from Anthony bourdain

    • @33thdegreescottishrite16

      CDN R Bourdain was dedicated all his life to food... this woman is just showing some of the daily life is Sicily, including talking about the mafia involvement in food.

    Arancina comunque

      Fabio Cannizzaro Come mai c'è questa differenza? A Palermo è arancina e da altre parti dicono arancino... Non capisco!?

    • @lpbud
      @lpbud 7 лет назад

      Tufayel Miah è solo una questione di genere, in quanto nella Sicilia occidentale le arancine sono viste come delle palle, quindi femminile. Se aggiungiamo che le arancine sono state inventate nelle zone siciliane dominate dagli arabi quindi Palermo in primis, ne deduco che sia corretto chiamarle in questo modo.

    A pity that she does not say clearly what she is eating and discussing. The first dish for example were involtini (I could see) from goat meat (she said?). Then she bought an arancino a rice ball which can be filled with almost anything. I think I even saw pass before my eyes a panino con porchetta (not really Sicilian). Anyhow I got irritated and i'll watch it again when I have more patience. Being part Italian myself I am curious what she comes up with.
