So how much junk were you able to clear out? What type of junk took up the most space? PLEASE NOTE: if you are calculating how much space you got back in gigabytes, you may need to quit and reopen the Photos app a few times in order to get the accurate number.
Very grateful for this tutorial and the advice on power photos. It's an app I've been missing for a long time. Got my cleanup done, removed ~500 photos and found some big videos to decide what to do with. I love that power photos lets you manage multiple libraries, so I may archive some pics that are taking up lots of space in the cloud. Thanks so much!
Hi David..I was concerned about the quality loss by changing screenshots to JPG. I did a search and found that "JPEGs are for photographs and realistic images. PNGs are for line art, text-heavy images, and images with few colors". I see JPG is the same as JPEG? Often I will grab a screen shot of a beautiful nature scene and use it for my desktop picture, thus, I want it to be the highest quality. Also, can you comment on the heic photo format? I often have to export photos I air drop to my Mac as JPG, since some destinations do not like heic. I'll have to investigate as to what the default format/codec is for photos on my iPhone. I thought it was JPG, but they all end up as heic when I move them to my Mac. Thanks for your episode.
I really enjoy your videos I was trying to put my finger on it the other day. But there’s just something about the feel of your videos I don’t know if it’s the way you film it if it’s the bumpers you use if it’s the graphics it’s probably all of it combined but there’s a peaceful modern clear feel about it about your contact. I really appreciate it. Hello from phoenix Arizona.
After I finished recording this tutorial, I went through my own personal library and was able to clear off 500 videos, 2k photos, and reclaimed over 70GB!!!!
Ok, This is great, my largest file is 10.95 GB and is a high resolution 55 min video of darkness. There was just enough video to see me set the phone down on the counter top. Thanks!
Quick question. Why when I'm in the photos library there are folders by year with the wrong year(2030, 2033, 2035 for example) How can I fix this issue? Thanks.
About "Two second videos": file size is NOT an accurate determiner of a video's duration. The video file's format and resolution can greatly impact the file's size. Photos or PowerPhotos needs a Duration sort criteria to be useful for managing videos.
Thank you David, you are quite right that Terminal does not like the screen code in this video. Works ok after the code in the link. Coffee sent from my Paypal account. Thanks Mike
Excellent videos. I am trying to sort my 20 k photos and your video has been a great help. I have Google photos and I cloud as back up, is that overkill. I find Google photos easier, if you could point me to a video which will help me with iCloud I’d be v grateful. My photos are on an external hard drive and do not seem to sync that well with iCloud. Best wishes from freezing UK.
Just found your videos and software and it seems to be just what I'm after. Ive had a 1015 MacBook that I carefully curated labeled, rated & keyworded over 40,000 photos in and haven't updated the system software because I feared loosing the photo library. I've recently purchased a new M2 MBP and my first missing is to update my photo libraries that are now spread over a few computers and several devices and you software seems to be a cool tool to achieve it. Am I correct in thinking that is essentially a utility for managing the libraries and you still view them in "Photos" Do you know if there is a way of only using iCloud for some photos and not all of them ? Also when looking at duplicates do you also merge keywords ? Thanks I can't see why you won't be getting a sale from me.
Thanks for the comment. I'm happy to help you with these questions, but as a small business, I have to charge for private support. If you'd like to work with me one on one, feel free to book a session at techtalkamerica.com/techtherapy if you don't believe me, check out the testimonials page: techtalkamerica.com/testimonials
For you, maybe. Many people import all their photos into a single digital library, and the process couldn’t be more straightforward. You connect your camera or its SD card to your Mac, you open Photos and you click Import. This has always been the intended use of the iPhotos app, long before the first iPhone came to be.
Hey David once you do this is there a way to copy a photo album or a created screensaver to a DVD on your Mac? I can’t seem to decide on a software to do that with what is your recommendations for just a simple burning to a DVD. I have seen Toast, several options, I have a dvd drive connected to iMac running Mac OS Catalina version 10.15.7 . thanks for all you do to help us seniors…
This video will almost immediately need an update as iOS/macOS/iPadOS 16 will have photo duplicate detection built in. Kind of bummed that this video is about using an app that costs money. I assumed this would be about tools built into macOS Photos itself.
The built in duplicate detection feature you are referring to that is built into Mac OS Ventura has a fatal flaw (I've tested it). Just like all the other duplicate removal apps, it does NOT take into consideration whether or not a photo has been saved into an album. If you have taken the time to organize your photos into albums, then going with the built in duplicate detector will totally screw up that organization. Also... duplicates are just one type of junk.
Please, sir, what do you recommend that is similar to your apps here that works with WIndows/Google photos/Android? Hope you can recommend something. Thank you!
PowerPhotos kind of work, but not with the results desired. My photo library has almost 175,000 photos in it. After a scan with PowerPhotos, it found 26,109 duplicates, which I expected.51.49 Gigs of space. After carefully inspection the files, I deleted them. After the clean up, I ended up with almost 148,000 photos and videos. The Apple Photos said "updating" for days, I thought it was cleaning up iCloud Photos to sync with the cleaned up database on the Mac. After about four days, all of the deleted photos were back on the Mac. So if PowerPhotos delete files from my Mac, they don't sync back to iCloud to clear them from my other Macs, iPhone and iPads. I tried deleting a few photos in the Photos app on my Mac, and they did sync to all of my devices. I ran PowerPhotos a second time and it seemed to work this time. The problem seems to be iCloud Photos not syncing correctly.
I just bought the app and installed it.. Since I have over 177,000 photos, the scan is going to take a while. I take a lot of photos and delete very few. Once I switched to iCloud Photos it merged photos from all of my computers and devices creating a lot of duplicates. I have been looking for something to do a clean up. This might do the trick. Digital film is cheap.
Here is the conundrum there are a few apps out there that allow you to do some of the same things from your iPad, but the problem is they have absolutely HORRIFIC privacy policies and I would never ever recommend them to anyone. Frankly I’m shocked that some apps are still in the App Store.
I don't understand ,you have so many 19K photos and videos? I have 1,891 photos & 577 videos and my ICLOUD storage is full & won't update. I don't want to pay Apple $10.00 a month for more storage. Wish I can find a video that shows me how to get photos & videos off my iPhone to give me more space but not delete them on my MAC. It's very frustrating for me and ok I am 72.
I work with thousands of people in the average person these days has right around 20,000 photos considering how long digital photography has been a thing. I’m sorry that you don’t see the value in paying $10 for iCloud storage, but you should consider that that saves you from having to buy a new device with more storage. iCloud gives you the ability to optimize your data which is exactly why it’s worth it.
Great video, nothing goes wrong when David teaches his classes before they are dismissed 🫣 I’m going to get this app through your link, it’s a bummer since I forgot to get it last time. This is for mic but how to get rid the photo library on iPhones?
14,489 images; 4218 dupes; 10 gb space saved. A fantastic program and a great recommendation. Thank you, David!!!
Wow!!! That's awesome and a GREAT testimonial!
Bedankt
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support 🙏🏼

Hi David. Can you mention the name of the second tool for similar photos? Also what are your thoughts on gemini 2
Hi David! You rock! Great video! Keep up the great work!

Do you have a recommendation for an app that does the same duplicate finder for music?
I have always looked to you for the right advise.
Thank you kindly!
Software looks great but only for MAC - is there a PC equivalent version ?
Can you automate? Like exporting automatically to a folder
What version of Photos are you using? I don't have list mode.
Quick question. Why when I'm in the photos library there are folders by year with the wrong year(2030, 2033, 2035 for example) How can I fix this issue? Thanks.
David, what if it is a terribly bloated Recents folder that I want to say "Goodbye" to?

Hey, my pocket photos are some of my best work!
😂
Can you safely delete thumbnails without deleting the original photo? So much I'm reading says you shouldn't touch them.
Excellent videos. I am trying to sort my 20 k photos and your video has been a great help. I have Google photos and I cloud as back up, is that overkill. Thanks, David, I will upgrade and use the screenshot trick. Where is the super thank you heart for a "tip"?
Just did it on your website Tech Talk America. You are a gem!

This ONLY works with Apple photo library it is useless for drives full of photos taken by anything other than a phone as far as I can see.
For you, maybe. Many people import all their photos into a single digital library, and the process couldn’t be more straightforward. Toast is probably your best course of action.

@@TechTalkAmerica Fair point. Still, I saw this video, and assumed it would be with built in hidden tricks, not require a pay tool to do it.
Please, sir, what do you recommend that is similar to your apps here that works with WIndows/Google photos/Android? Hope you can recommend something. Thank you!
Sorry. It's not my area of expertise. I'm 100% Apple fan boy.
What if you have saved one copy to one album and the other to another album? I think you explained it but not certain
The keeper stays where it is and the trashed gets replaced. (Your albums look the same)

Be sure to let us know in another comment how much you were able to get back
112,340 photos before duplicates run. 98,430 photos AFTER deletion of duplicates.
