For me, the biggest difference between B99 and Psych is that Brooklyn 99's characters feel like characters. No one in real life behaves like any of them. They're caricatures. Stereotypes. And it's really entertaining. Psych's cast feels like people. They behave realistically, and none of them are particularly exaggerated. You could meet somebody who behaves exactly like any one of them, with the possible exception of Shawn.
Yeah. And on that note, everyone seems to know Shawn acts ridiculous, and they treat him like he's ridiculous all the time, so his exaggerated actions still fit in with the rest of the performances because their characters are aware of how over-the-top his character is.
It is also the perfect balance of Comedy and Police Drama. It keeps you tuned into both the police aspect of the show and of course the perfect comedy in the show. Oh and best duo of best friends in tv history for me
You forgot to mention that usually in the beginning it teaches you a real life skill that can help you. (Or sometimes it’s just a flashback from the past)

A major theme of the show is that it’s basically a love letter to the 80’s. Cultural references, music, guest stars - it’s all there and for people that grew up in those years, Psych is an amazing nostalgia trip.
Coming to the show as someone who didn’t live through the 80s, I may not have understood most of the smaller references, but it was still the most consistently funny and entertaining show I’ve ever watched. I have genuinely lost count of the amount of times I’ve rewatched this series (at least 30) and have been watching it for most of my life.

What I love most about Psych is that it's a comedy crime show, but it's not 50/50 or 70/30... it's 100% comedy, AND 100% crime show, which is absurd - but very Psych... :) Gus: That's not how percentages work, Shawn!
A viewer from the U.K. here and both my partner and I rate Psych as our favourite show, and there are some great shows past and present out there, but Psych, What! A terrific ensemble cast and as funny as anything i have ever seen. The relationship and chemistry between James Roday and Dule Hill is something to behold, it's magical, you believe that they really have known each other since they were kids. Seen every episode and all of them more than once, including the last Christmas movie, and I'm really happy that they are doing more of those. I actually felt pretty bereft when the show came to an end. You know that's right!
They did it right then, they left you wanting more, that's the sign of a good show that knows when to stop, but can still cash in with the occasional movie specials. Far too many shows drag on past being good to the point where people stop watching the show gets cut and nothing gets resolved.
Psych is my all-time favorite show. I agree with most, if not all, of these points. I would also bring up the heavy 80's nostalgia and references that much of the comedy revolves around, as this could be a selling point for some, or a deal breaker for others. I like the Brooklyn 99 comparison as I feel that the 2 shows are very similar in tone and cast chemistry. Also, the guest stars are almost always amazing and definitely worth a mention.
Don't forget to mention the feel of the show. It feels very home-like...like you are with them in the show and feel like you are at home. There's always beautiful scenery to help with that.
Comment back when you are at 20 times each episode of every season and 8 times on the movie. And because of this video im about to start episode 1 season 1again.
I just started watching Psych a few months back and I told my wife it is one of the greatest adaptations of Sherlock Holmes on television! Any fan of Holmesian literature would appreciate Roday's take on Holmes as Shawn Spencer. Just as Holmes, he's hyper-observant, he's witty, he knows more than everyone in the room but is not pretentious about it, he is not afraid to admit shortcomings and ask for help, he's at odds with the chief inspector but he still respects him even though he knows hes wrong, and his best friend is someone whom he is very attached to and depends upon...also his friend is in the medical field. To me Psych is better than BBC's Sherlock, simply because SH was not "weird", he was just eccentric just as Sherlock Holmes was.
I disagree slightly. First of all, Shawn was very pretentious about it (ok maybe the better word here is narcissist, I mean it's basically confirmed in that episode where he went to a mental hospital) and also I personally feel that Shawn has more energy and off-the-wall crazy that the calm, methodical Holmes. Otherwise agree👍
When you see James and Dulé interact together off screen to this day, they still are so much like Shawn and Gus together. James was doing an interview for something and just the way he was speaking and doing the interview for this show he was doing on ABC he still was giving me major Shawn vibes. He was just born for the role. And Dulé has performed on Broadway now, they are such their characters that it's not funny.
Honestly, watching the whole cast interacting outside of the show... it's like they are still on the show lol They have a lot of their own actual personality traits and chemistry in their characters.
Psych will always be my favorite show, always. It always makes me laugh, it always makes me feel all the emotions. Like one thing Psych does so well, is that it does take a punch to the guts, like the episode where Gus tells his college friends from the band, on how it broke his heart, Dulé did such a good job with that one line. But the show doesn't make you so depressed, it gives you hope, or it at least gave me hope, when I needed it. Another thing that you did mention, is how they don't rush the storylines. Like take for instance Shules, they could have easily made them a thing in so many times, but they took their time, and trusted that they would be able to show it, and that is a thing honestly a lot of shows do not. And you can tell that this cast and crew love each other, like a couple of days ago, they showed the Zoom call of them talking about their favorite episodes, and you could tell they all love each other. I just am forever grateful for this show, and so thank you for showing that us Psychos are still strong! (Can't wait for the second one!!) But thank you so much for this!!
I become a Psych-o way back when it first aired on USA and I'm currently binging it on Amazon Prime. It truly is an amazing show and really showed its staying power. One of my favorite things is that Psych repeatedly paid homage to other shows and movies, often doing whole episodes that centered around them. The nostalgia they presented was spot on and I don't think any other show on TV did as well as Psych. I do wish you would have talked about the villains a bit more, (Mr. Yang was my favorite) and talked about fan favorites characters like Despereaux.
Just how incredibly entertaining the bloopers alone are speaks volumes Like, seriously, what other show can you find where there's just hours of hysterical bloopers?
This show will always be in my top 10 list for favorite shows. My dad started watching it with me when I was like 5 and I haven’t hated a single episode
8:51 I LOVED ENCYCLOPEDIA BROWN AND PYSCH!! I can definitely see where you’re coming from as they creatively stretch the genre to new lengths. Their writing is phenomenal, even without comedy with the cases they create
I think you nailed it, but instead of saying other random nerd shit, I would of specified, area codes, newspaper articles, and currency? Especially the episode with the counterfeiter and how he tells Shawn about how and why currency will change colors, etc etc. and Gus uses his knowledge of area codes in the episode with Juliet’s imposter. Otherwise I think it was really good.
I don't get why shawn and the show describes the relationship with his dad as dysfunctional, i think they're perfect and henry is such a loving father ❤
Looking back at many of the funny flashbacks Shawn tried to avoided doing things his father have to straighten out of him to do. He could had gone to college and become a criminal profiler but spent part of his youth being angry at his father. Than his mother told him to get over it because it was she who decided to leave home for her dream job. His father got nothing to do with her leaving. She credit Henry for raising their son right (and gift of observation).
Did You know the main reason his dad nurtured the hyper observant thing is because he has an eidetic memory he gets from his mom. His dad just taught him to pay attention to everything so he missed nothing. Which is also the main reason, before the psychic thing, he couldn't hold down a job. He's hyper awareness and memory means he gets bored when everyday is the same. I'm in love with this show too. I've also read all of the books. I can't wait for the new movie.:)
I love this show, too. It’s one of my favorites and most rewatched ones. The last couple of seasons kind of lost the magic of the show a bit, especially when focusing on Juliet and Shawn’s relationship drama rather than Shawn and Gus but oh well. It really is a unique show, where you would never have guessed the criminal’s motives until the end because clues aren’t sprinkled throughout like Monk, and pineapples are everywhere lol. Great cast, lots of fan service, great theme song! Also love the guest stars.
A couple of things: I loved how in the end, they confirmed Psych to be in the same universe as Monk. “One of us is black and one of us is tan.” “Henry Spencer, where are your pants?” I do think one of the worse ones was the vampire episode. If I’m correct, the entire tone felt off, and the episode suffered from a lot of shaky cam. Though production may have acknowledged it because the title was, “This episode sucks.” Both a reference to the vampire theme and the lower quality that my family felt the episode had. “I know who the West Side rapist is!” In the middle of a children’s tap dance performance.
Another thing I think you could add is that Psych is really great with its guest stars. Some of them have so much chemistry with the main cast that they appear several times, like Cary Elwes for instance. And they always use their guest stars in creative ways as well, like in the Twin Peaks homage episode. Overall, I just think that's another thing to love about the show!
I've seen every episode too and I tend to rewatch it after a big pause between watching the show again so it's not so fresh in my mind. Even so I always remember most of the episode I'm rewatching.
I started watching this show when I was about 5 (I was left unsupervised) and it obviously shaped my childhood and I subsequently shaped my entire personality based on it. I have too many episodes memorized and it is my frame of reference for too many things in life. The amount of times my family has heard me say "this is like that one scene in Psych where..." is immense. I love it with my whole heart and my favorite birthday gift was a shirt that said psych on it. it makes me so happy.
Psych is my 2nd favorite show ever, Monk being the first. Both are world class in their execution of plots, characters, emotions and connectivity to other episodes. They're both truly wonderful.
It's fun to see a straight arrow like Lassitor become more and more crazy as he teams up with Sean during the seasons. Also Sean just naming Gus different nicknames as the show goes on gave me a laugh too.
@@thebrutusmars I liked the character in the episode, Michael Weston was someone I was hoping to become a reoccurring character honestly... the show itself was so so...
Very good point, I literally never get bored of rewatching it. It’s even structured in a way that I know where to find every episode because there is an actual story line.
This show was my comfort tv as a teenager. I picked it up in the tap dancing episode, then I watched it religiously every time the show aired. I love hearing you talk about all the things you enjoyed about it and the ways it stood out from other crime shows, because this is the first time I’m stepping back and noticing reasons why I love rewatching these episodes but not other crime shows necessarily.
Another show about an observant detective that i really enjoyed was Monk, though that one has almost nothing to do with Psych aside from... both being a show about an observant detective. Very different moods, but I also quite liked it.
I’m watching this video because my dad absolutely loves Psych. I used to play behind the couch while he watched it. He was so excited about the movies too, and told me all the behind the scenes tidbits he would hear (from interviews, articles, etc.). Can’t wait to learn more about my dad’s favorite show!
Excellent analysis of what works! The balance is everything and each character and storyline components is critical. Love how Psych works...cogs fit perfectly on the wheel.
What's highly extraordinary about "Psych," for an American TV/comedy/crime series, is absence of foul language. And Kofie misses this very refreshing aspect. Even when Kofie describes this engaging and hilarious show, he typically substitutes "shit" for "stuff" because he evidently wants to show he's "with it." But "Psych" is so good it feels right with clean language throughout. And as George Carlin liked to say, "My things are 'stuff,' yours are 'shit.''"
I liked the running gags and sayings: “Come on son! “Gus, Don’t be a_____” “I’ve heard it both ways” Weird names given to Gus Weird pronunciation of character names like “Clithby and Craaaaig” Random 80’s shout outs and cameos Also liked all the themed shows that resembled popular movie franchises- Indiana Jones, Rush Hour, Fast and Furious, etc. Lastly, I liked how they would change the theme song to fit the episode. Wasn’t there one sung by Boyz II Men?
I was first introduced to this show when I was about 9 or 10. Its been around 7 years and I have seen every episode at least 5 times and it never gets old. I feel like these characters have watched me grow up. It's truly such a special show.

I enjoyed the list of guest star cameos, from Curt Smith to Ralph Macchio to Cary Elwes to Freddie Prinze, Jr. The list goes on and on.
Psych is easily one of my favorite shows. Been watching it since I was 7; now that I am 20 years of age, this show is practically family for me.
I wish James Roday would be as popular or more than Andy Samberg, I want him in more things.
Glad this is back in my recommends, this is the only show to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside
I love that for hole eps they bring in entire casts of films to parody them, eg the clue ep, or the twin peeks one. Also pineapple hunting is fun
I've seen every episode too and I tend to rewatch it after a big pause between watching the show again so it's not so fresh in my mind. Even so I always remember most of the episode I'm rewatching.
I used to obsessed w psych. Still am. When the theme song pkayed i immediately started dancing lol
#1 TV show ever!!! It the GOAT! Who's ready for Psych: The Movie 2?
psych was really fun! maybe it's time for a rewatch...
No way I love this show, and this is amazing that you love it also
Psych is my 2nd favorite show ever, Monk being the first. Both are world class in their execution of plots, characters, emotions and connectivity to other episodes.
They're both truly wonderful.
True, Dexter is in my list though too.
Absolutely one of the most re-watchable shows ever!
I can't wait for the next movie!
I've heard it both ways.
Wait...... No, I haven't
Such a useful line
Woody is also a great supporting character, especially in the later seasons.
It's fun to see a straight arrow like Lassitor become more and more crazy as he teams up with Sean during the seasons.
Also Sean just naming Gus different nicknames as the show goes on gave me a laugh too.
Cw Flash show should have taken notes from psych when you think of it
You heard about Pluto? That's messed up, right?
Should've mentioned the time they literally remade their own season 1 Ep. in season 7!!!!
Ah yes, with the lawyer and murder at the news station
no he shouldn't have; took a mediocre episode and made it worse, simply for a gimmick, never should have happened.
James Lewis
I actually really liked the original episode, I wasn’t a big fan of the remake.
@@thebrutusmars I liked the character in the episode, Michael Weston was someone I was hoping to become a reoccurring character honestly... the show itself was so so...
I really didn't like how in the end gus became childish and shawn became mature in the last episode. Gus really got screwed in that ending.
Very good point, I literally never get bored of rewatching it. It’s even structured in a way that I know where to find every episode because there is an actual story line.
my favorite show, I just keep watching on a seasonal loop!!
I love Psych so much lol. I feel like Shawn and Jules made the show more interesting so you had more of an emotional connection with the show.
The Mentalist is similar to psych in a way that you can solve the crime yourself for most of the episodes
Good job. Just started watching 👀 Psych. Very entertaining. One element of the series I enjoy is the guest actor appearances. 😁
Kofie, you are the man. This is my favorite show by a long shot. Fuckin awesome that it's yours too
Excellent analysis of what works! The balance is everything and each character and storyline components is critical. Love how Psych works...cogs fit perfectly on the wheel.
I missed those guys a lot. Thanks for your video, not many talk about this beautiful series anymore
This has literally been my favorite show since it first aired! Back then, USA network was bringing the fire!
If everyone watched Sean and his partner with 104 nicknames then racism would end.
What a wonderful video that I've completely missed for the last 6 years!
You are an underrated youtuber
You forgot that Shawns mother has a photographic memory. Which was obviously passed down to him.
Remember when you marathon, look for the pineapple every episode and never ever use this show for a bingo or drinking game.
thank you for voicing why i love this show...honestly couldn't come up with what exactly made it so good!
One does not simply make an episode about Psych without mentioning the pineapple, and the many names of Gurton Buster.
A Psych/Brooklyn 99 crossover would be interesting.
Strongly agree, yes I do, oh boy oh boy.
brooklyn 99 has nothing on psych
Oh boy psych is better by far
Hello There
Rodian Gamer General Kenobi
What's highly extraordinary about "Psych," for an American TV/comedy/crime series, is absence of foul language. And Kofie misses this very refreshing aspect. Even when Kofie describes this engaging and hilarious show, he typically substitutes "shit" for "stuff" because he evidently wants to show he's "with it." But "Psych" is so good it feels right with clean language throughout. And as George Carlin liked to say, "My things are 'stuff,' yours are 'shit.''"
I bought the box set, Shrink wrapped it and put it in longterm storage for the Grandkids.....they will love it. This show will never die.
was wondering why kofie’s delivery style on sb videos were so familiar.
Psych is a fantastic TV show. It never gets old. I’m on my 10th watch and still discovering new subtleties
Juliet was such a marriage material.....well done maggie lawson 😍 ❤
Apparently there are supposed to be a few movies and I'm so excited!
This show is so nostalgic for me I literally cried when it ended
this show will stay with me forever, I think I've rewatched it at least 6 times. time to make that 7. the movies are great too :)
I liked the running gags and sayings:
“Come on son!
“Gus, Don’t be a_____”
“I’ve heard it both ways”
Weird names given to Gus
Weird pronunciation of character names like “Clithby and Craaaaig”
Random 80’s shout outs and cameos
Also liked all the themed shows that resembled popular movie franchises- Indiana Jones, Rush Hour, Fast and Furious, etc.
Lastly, I liked how they would change the theme song to fit the episode. Wasn’t there one sung by Boyz II Men?
The best show ever I love it. Mix of mystery and humor and it balances it so well.
I was first introduced to this show when I was about 9 or 10. Its been around 7 years and I have seen every episode at least 5 times and it never gets old. I feel like these characters have watched me grow up. It's truly such a special show.
I KNOW YOU KNOW~
THAT I'M NOT TELLING THE TRUTH
the intro is was i tell myself everytime i see the show name, always up for it
