As someone who loves philosophy this seems so fun! and its not just the trolley dilemma but also other popular problems such as the ship of thesus! how fun!
When we did a research about this, a lot of factors go into it as to why people would or would not pull it. While it would have been very interesting to see some of Max and Ross' input before pressing the buttons on the first few decisions, I also like the fact that the video isn't too serious and there's still friendly banter. (YES, I DID IT, I PUT ON THE *BANTS*).
I think the baby Hitler one is interesting, let's use the Endgame rules Max and Ross used, you go back in time and kill baby Hitler, to then come back to the present where nothing has changed, sure you created a timeline where Hitler never existed and the events of ww2 never happen, but you and everyone else don't experience that timeline, which means the events of ww2 still did happen. Plus when you go back in time and get to baby Hitler, he is not only a baby, but is currently innocent of everything he's done in the future (which opens up a whole new question of, should a past version of yourself be punished for something you did in the future). So, would you go back in time and kill a currently innocent baby, to then never experience the outcomes of what you did, the only reward you get is knowing that you created a whole new timeline where things could possibly be better.
@@DrgnZip that is something I was going to cover in my original comment, but I decided to stay away from hypotheticals because that is bottomless can of worms
Oooo, I really like that. There's a lot to think about when it comes to the rabbit hole of time travel and morality. It may never end, but it is always a little bit fun to think about.
I think Everytime someone makes a decision it creates different timelines of either decision, branching into multiple timelines that we never experience. it's like a tree almost, when a tree grows it starts off as something small and it grows branch after branch, creating a tree. Just an epiphany I have.
Hey Max, please do the map “There is No Learning Curve” I think the second one is better but it would be better if you do both, it is a 3 player puzzle map and it is really good
Anyone else just see it’s like 12:55 everyday and automatically think oh hold on let me just reload the for you page of RUclips till Max’s video shows up 😭😂
I wasn't expecting to see The Trolley Problem have the Ship of Theseus(If you systematically change out every bit of a ship if and when does it become a new ship) put in the middle of it.
5:56 it’s more like neir’s example, if an android replaces every part with a new one is it the some android. The point is the parts are identical to the original one’s. I feel it’s between (all new parts are part of the old train slowly transferring “ownership”, I don’t know how to word it but ya) or (none of the original parts are part of the train, there for new train). Also the same goes for people as their cells die and get replaced.
@@joshuaarnett762 I know and neir automata had a character who literally replaced every part but their leg because they thought they wouldn’t be themselves anymore if they did.
Later All The Choices Max And Ross Made Have Come True Having The Estimate Of Being That A LOT Of People Died (It’s a joke don’t take it seriously people) ALSO ROSS KILLED ME AT THE ONE BILLION DOLLARS ONE
20:40 honestly they didn't think about if the train kills one person in no "specified time period" they could've gotten the same result of killing Hitler out of all the people in the world at that time or not.
when in school we talked about the trolley problem in one of my classes, and the thing that really hit me was that my friend told me why some people wouldn't do anything, and basically it was they thought if they did something they could be held liable for killing one person if they diverted the trolley. If they didn't divert it they didn't have any hand in killing someone, and if they did they were purposefully killing someone, while ultimately saving more in the process but they still had a hand in killing one person
I solved the math problem anyways. In case you wanted to know, I found the trains would collide in 12.8 minutes. I'll work it out if anyone actually cares lol
I enjoy watching these videos while I work on my art, projects and such, it has always been a way for me to feel better and wind down cause mithzan and the bois are a bunch of goofballs and make my day a million times over
1:21 as soon as saw that thing up a head I new what this map was being I saw someone who posted this about their map on Twitter 8:38 does a sick backflip lol
Because I don't see anyone doing the math, The Trains would Collide in 10 mins and 40 seconds. The Trains start with 80 chunks between them, since a chunk is 16 blocks long then that 1280 block in total (assuming the trains are not move diagonally across the chunks). One train is moving 40 blocks per minute and to other train is moving 80, adding the two together would give us the total distance lost between the trains per minute, which is 120 blocks per minute. Then we just divide our 1280 total blocks with our 120 blocks per minute which give us 10.6666(repeating) minutes or 10 mins and 40 secs.
The difficulty of the original Trolley problem is you be passively responsible for 5 deaths or actively responsible for one. Most people would just let it go, no matter what they say they would do, if you're actually in that situation you're probably not gonna act
See, this is interesting because it also raises the question of whether or not the answers would be the same if this wasn’t something being recorded. You can’t help thinking that someone’s answers would be different if they knew thousands of people would hear them.
I love where Jerry and Pookie were trying to solve the math problem and still couldn't figure it out when every other sane person would have chosen not to do it! 🤣
honestly, if 51% of the train gets replaced instantly, it's a new train. If it gets replaced over a period of time, the parts that were replaced become part of the original train
When it got to the “or go back in time to 1889 to kill baby Hitler”, I would’ve chosen that because, either when time travelling to the past, it becomes antimatter, and gets destroyed by the air, and creates a huge antimatter explosion that kills us all from the past and the present, or everything we have done in the past already happened, time traveling will not create paradoxes because the universe might throw in an event/scenario that makes everything normal or makes the present normal, even if the past is altered…but then again, the portal opened for like minutes, wouldn’t the family would’ve ran away from the portal because they can’t understand it? But then again again, time travel isn’t possible in the world, quantum realm? Sure. Relativity? Hypothetically. But in the normal realm now…impossible. But then again again again, this is all just a game, and everything that’s impossible in the game (floating trees) can’t exist in the normal world.
Still probably my favorite video of y'all's to date lmfao good soup Your content has always made me so happy but watching you totally not murder a bunch of people is so funny
the thing with these scenarios is that I overthink them because I have to. like is the person a bad person or are they good. cause that makes a huge difference to me. and I never like how vague the prompts are. but idk. still liked the vid lol
Talking about the butterfly affect the best example I know is an episode of supernatural where they stopped the titanic from crashing which caused a lot of dead people to be alive lots of different people being born and for the main character driving a different car, changing history even bad history doesn’t alway mean it will be better for everyone
I mean when asked a hypothetical situation, I imagine myself in the situation where possible. And I'd rather kill 1 person rather than 6 if I'm being honest
Is x = 12.8? If we consider that both trains are going to the same point of collision we can do; Where m = x 40 b/m + 60 b/m = 100 b/m 1 chunk = width of 16 b 80 x 16b = 1,280 b 100 x m = 1,280 m = 1,280/100 * m = 12.8 ** x = 12.8
Just thinking/ making a argument here, feel free to skip past if ya don’t want to read! :D I’m going to argue about that infinity problem. Assuming it’s killing at a slow pace, for like once a year a person dies by the train or something like that. If you stop the train, it still killed infinite people. I will also assume everyone will die the moment the train stops. If you stop the train and everyone dies, that’s not infinity, in that instance everyone is dead, no one is alive to kill. So the choice is either have a slow kill over time, or call the bluff of the infinity and stop the train.

If we consider that both trains are going to the same point of collision we can do;
Where m = x
40 b/m + 60 b/m = 100 b/m
1 chunk = width of 16 b
80 x 16b = 1,280 b
100 x m = 1,280
m = 1,280/100
* m = 12.8
** x = 12.8
