    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  4 года назад +1

      hi Jan, you would be best to experiment with that because the idea of the tissue paper is to act as a barrier, it stops glue seeping through, if you use another fabric it would have to pass the seep through test, but worth a try if it were a dense tightly woven fabric. I have used a single layer canvas fabric from spotlight in tonight's video, that doesn't let the glue through great idea hugs Donna

    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  4 года назад +1

      no probs GiGi, no it's not the same, interfacing has iron on adhesive on one side, this fuses both sides, first iron onto the fabric then it adheres the tissue paper. the tissue paper is what acts as a barrier to the glue. hugs Donna

    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  3 года назад +1

      hi Darice, thanks a lot, the reason you can't leave the heat and bond backing on is bc it's non-stick, it has to be, to be able to release the fusible web. plus the tissue paper is very thin mine is 17gsm the thin paper is required ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna

    • @daricet.2958
      @daricet.2958 3 года назад

      @@JunkJournalideas Thank you for explaining that...it makes sense. Is your tissue like what you wrap gifts with because that’s pretty thin. I’m trying to see if it’s an item I already have. Great video, I’m making strips of fabric glued onto fused interfacing which is the same idea as yours...heat & bond is another interfacing or any fusible fabric put in layers first...thanks...

    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  4 года назад

      thanks a lot Lorraine, in this instance interfacing is different because interfacing is thicker and has adhesive on one side only, once you iron it to your main piece of fabric, its re-enforces the fabric, which is great, depending on the fabric and the interfacing glue may still find it's way through the layers? heat & bond is a very light fusible medium that adheres both sides allowing you to add the layer of tissue paper which then becomes the glue barrier between the fabric and the next bit of fabric or book board :-) 🦋 Hugs Donna

    Thank you so much for this, Donna. It was quite opportune that you made this tutorial at this time as I'm making a junk journal for my sister and plan on covering it with fabric - my first time - and I had plenty of questions around how best to do it! I also plan on making an altered book from an old Readers Digest book. Can you advise how to clean the cover before working on it. I think there is some sort of rubber that is used? If you could let me know I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again.

    • @JunkJournalideas
      @JunkJournalideas  4 года назад +1

      You are so welcome Linda! I didn't and haven't cleaned any of my covers because the ones i've used have had jackets on and have been in pretty good condition. If anything you could just wipe them over with a very damp cloth just water, I'm not familiar with the rubber other than a rubber used to remove glue. If your covering the recycled book cover entirely and bringing the cover to the inside of the book and mitering the corners you could sand the cover if its shiny. If its a book cloth like the one i used you don't need to do anything because the glue will grab perfectly on its own. 🦋 cheers Donna

      Linda, I bought an Absorbene Dirt Eraser off Amazon for $6 (it's huge, like the palm of your hand huge). It's made of vulcanized natural rubber and is made to clean books. It brightened up my 1942 hardcover pretty well without making light spots and stuff like that. It's extremely gentle and probably won't erase really dark spots, which some people complained about. (I'm not re-covering my altered book cover since I want to keep the engraved title; I'm just going to do a simple collage on it.)

    • @JunkJournalideas

      it's hard to say Jan because it all depends on the fabric and the glue? I just glued a cover onto a recycled book and didnt do this method first, bc it didnt need it, so some fabrics will be safe and wont need the extra backing to stop seep. its really great for the thin fine fabrics check out the fabric i used here its quiet thick and course it never had any seepage at all, cheers Donna ruclips.net/video/Cgff2D2-ptg/видео.html

    Are you a mind reader, Donna? Gluing fabric as a cover was my next project :D Ok so question time: I meant to use an ugly fabric then paint it. Would the paint (acrylic) mess things or not? (I was thinking first glying the fabric on my cardboard then paint it.)

    • @JunkJournalideas

      It seems i am a mind reader lol the steps i have taken to paint fabric is to paint it first, let it dry...if it needs backing, make into faux book cloth, then cut it to size. Glue it to the cover, this way it will reduce/prevent glue seep (you can glue then paint but it will be more work, and need to be done in sections, which may show joins, totally depends on what your then going to do on top of that) 🦋 hugs Donna
