I absolutely love the games twist on the “evil clone” trope Despite being so abrasive and combative, Pitoo is just as good natured and righteous as Pit is, Their good heart is the axis from which they both reflect eachother and meet at a common ground. Pitoo is the true reflection of Pit, Because while Pit is a soldier who fights for what’s right, and for lady Palutena, Dark Pit is an independent spirit who fights for what he believes in and under no flag but his own One is order, The other is freedom, But both are nonetheless good people when it comes down to it. And in a weird way; they both make up for eachothers weaknesses like brothers. While all sides in the war between the gods have committed horrible acts, It’s Pitoos friendship with Pit that makes him realize that Hades is the true enemy, And through Dark Pits influence, we get a better picture of how petty the conflict is, Even in regards to the side we fight on.
I'm willing to bet Dark Pit was inspired by the first idea brought up for this game. Originally, it would have seen Pit cast out of Skyworld after being banished by Palutena, forced to survive on Earth. Over the years he would grow more independent while also delving into dark magic, which would have turned his wings black. His hair was black as well.

Ough okay I gotta geek out about musical theming in narratives once more hold on- Dark Pit (the character) is one who doesn’t like to hold himself to a particular set of morals. He doesn’t truly join the bad guys, but he also doesn’t truly join the good guys. He does his own thing, of his own accord, on his own time. Much like Dark Pit (the character), Dark Pit (the song) doesn’t really “join in” with the other music. While most of the other songs are traditional orchestral scores, Dark Pit (the song) goes off and marches to its own beat. The musical choices in the game are top-notch.
I think another way for me to think of Dark Pit is almost like a "mercenary" they aren't particularly "good" or "evil" they just do the job they are paid to do. And for Dark Pit it's not being "paid" and more so whichever side happens to benefit him most. For example against Pandora he teams with Pit only to turn on him when them working together isn't beneficial to him anymore.
