This was a great run-down on the location of everything under the hood. I recently purchased a worn out '05 van with hopes of turning it into an "adventure/camping van" for the family on a very limited budget. I've done a lot of research, but learned 75% more, in the last 15 minutes, sitting in front of the computer, watching your video vs. climbing around under the van to figure out where everything is located, and how everything is interconnected. Great video! Thank you!
Killer video man. Loved the clarity, and quick notes you added. The best part part by far was your quick diagnostic advise for each component regarding possible issues you might look out for. Cheers
Excellent video. I wish I had come across it 10 years ago. The presentation was well done and covered just about every component that give trouble in these vans. I thought I would not get anything from the video but actually picked up 2 or 3 new nuggets of info Very helpful to someone who recently purchased a used sprinter 02 through 06. Thank you bearsbuilds for your effort !!
I bought an 06 t1n in July of 2020... This has got to be the best overview of the engine bay I've seen since then!! I'm currently trying to diagnose why my van went into limp home mode yesterday, so needed a refresher of where everything is... Well done, and many thanks!!
I just bought a 2004 316cdi Automatic from the fire department. Only 30k miles in 20years. Having some challenges but getting there! Overall, almost the best van I have. My Viano 3.0 V6 Ambiente is still my favourite!
Ah, the familiar red horns! One of the first things I took off my Sprinter when I bought it. The red Hellas speak with far more authority than the original MB horn. Thanks for the tour.
Ahhh the turbo resonator... I have an 06 low mileage Great West Vans 30th Anniversary Edition bought used with 15k miles. First trip was from the east slope of the Rockies in Alberta to Vancouver Island (Tofino) and back. There was a TV show called Highway Through Hell about tow trucks working that stretch of road. All good until it went into limp mode at just about the peak of the climb out from Hope, BC. I had an idea it was the turbo resonator so luckily I managed a roadside fix with duct tape but not before my wife had called a tow company and the truck arrived to 'rescue' us. I Was confident in the fix and it ran fine, my wife wasn't - so onto the flatbed truck it went and $1500 later we were at a MB dealer getting a new part installed. We now have AMA RV Roadside Assistance if/when another problem occurs....there endeth the lesson!
Hi great video, this is definitely going into my van info playlist. You missed the abs module! Right after you touch on the master cyclinder and brake booster would've been the perfect time to point out the abs module down there near the fuel filter. Thanks again for the video. Cheers
Just purchased my '06 with the same engine, currently trying to figure out the key error code. However this was extremely helpful overall. Thanks for posting this!
I know I was having a key issue at one point, it could be the transponder is just not communicating with the reader in the cylinder. You can buy a used cylinder/key combo on eBay usually. That is always a tough one to trouble shoot though, best of luck!
2nd time commenting, but just wanted to thank you for this. I took notes and screenshots of all the different parts so I can get up to speed with what's going on in my engine (first time doing DIY mechanical work)
You got this! Just take one component at a time and it sometime helps me to track components and within the individual systems (I.e. coolant, ac, air, fuel etc).
Thanks! I"m new to T1Ns and went to look at one yesterday this would have helped IMMENSELY to have watched first. On thing I learned after looking at that 2006 and doing some research is that some vans came factory with a roof AC unit which had a secondary AC compressor at the bottom drivers side (front) of the engine below the cab ac compressor. I was SUPER confused because on the model I was looking at, the belt had been removed when a previous owner replaced the roof ac with an aftermarket unit. So I was looking under the engine and scratching my head as to why the compressor was disconnected. That combined with not knowing how to use the AC controls (who designed that cab interface? A monkey?) led me to assume the AC system was shot. Great overview.
I really appreciate your comment. You taught me something new, exactly why I love RUclips. I didn’t know about the passenger vans having the separate compressor, very interesting! Hope your search for a van goes well. They are getting older and cheaper. I’ve been keeping my eyes open for another Van also. Best of luck!
A very nicely done video as my friend just pickd up a 04 for two hundred dollars in western Canada all it has is a ground wire issue from engine to body.
What a solid overview! I learned so much. Would you consider doing a video that talks about how the engine generally works? I realize that’s a HUGE ask- but since you did this video it seems possible ! Thanks again
That is pretty neat. I know the control panel for the AC in general doesn’t exactly make sense.... admittedly I’ve never seen a running D5 so that is very cool. The D2 I installed under the passenger seat worked exceptionally well.
If I understand your question correctly the two tubes house a portion of the wiring harness. If you track them forward you may find them going to sensors and headlights…. Hopefully that helps 👍
+Greg Roberts I’m glad you liked the video. I know it is really high level but it is a starting point. Hopefully all went well checking out the 2005 Sprinter!!!
@@GetBusyBuilding 1 thing u failed 2 mention is the 1 thing I'm looking 4, the battery. I think it's an important question because a lot of diesels have 2 batteries. It would've been nice if u specified how many this vehicle houses and their locations.
@@Getyourdoe It has 1 battery.... you can install an auxiliary battery which would typically be put under the passenger seat (I believe). But almost all 2002-2006 sprinters have 1 battery.
Yes, we did T-Rex tintable bedliner for the paint. Worked well but sprayed on a windy day and it kind of showed up in the final result. People did enjoy feeling our van at gas stations and the coating protected it from pretty much everything.
Might want to Add: Just forward of the air filter is the Mass Air Flow Sensor. On my 2006 3500 5-cylinder Turbo Diesel, this thing has gotten fouled several times in the 6 yrs I've had it. Vehicle will suddenly go into Granny Mode/Limp Mode. Can't go over about 40 mph. Learning to clean this thing will save any owner a lot of frustration & $$$. I always carry a can of Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner. The only other equipment you need is (as I recall) a 10 mm socket. You have to remove the metal heat shield, but it's seriously not rocket science. I've both replaced the sensor & cleaned it a few times. Takes less than half an hour. There are more than one good RUclips video on the step-by-step. The most important thing is not to stick anything inside the MAFS housing. If you touch the sensor itself, you'll be buying a new one. Mine was simply shot when I bought it. If you have a Blue Driver, the code is P0101
Thanks for putting this orientation of major engine components of the l5. I'm a DIYer too. Had to quickly get acquainted with this engine after going into limp mode and had to replace the resonator. Just one thing, you say the fan clutch is easy to replace. I did not find that to be the case when mine failed. Ended up removing the radiator to get to it and bolts that hold it on. I'd be interested if you knew another way. While I was there I also replaced the serpentine belt tensioner, water pump and idler pulleys.
Glad you got the problem solved, I’m still surprised that there are resonators out there going bad. It was pretty much just a stock issue and I would assume no stock resonators are left 🤔. Sorry to hear that on the fan clutch. I was able to replace mine from the top, barely enough room to squeeze in there once you remove the shroud and loosen a few things up. You can slide the old one out and with a little yoga move or two get the new one in. My forearms felt it after.... but it can be done. Cheers -Bjorn
Perhaps worth pointing out the location of the serpentine belt tensioner pulley (between and left of power steering and A/C in this video). It's has a moulded in fitting (Torx on mine, apparently 3/8 on some others?) to fit a lever in to it, to get tension off the serpentine belt so you can remove it. Easy enough with the radiators swung out the way, trickier with all that still in place, particularly if you don't know where it is.
I am not 100% sure. If I were you I would look up the schematic for the Espar D5 (or D2… I forget off the top of my mind) and see how it is routed in the system, you could tap the coolant system mimicking that setup.
Awesome video! Off the top at 7:36 there’s some colorful wires that connects to each other on the right of your pointing stick ., would you happen to know what that is for? I just purchased a sprinter and that is disconnected ..? I don’t want to connect it and have the van blow up ? Lol. If you can help please.
If I think it’s what you’re talking about then it is just the connector to the Espar D5 heater… it may just mean that yours doesn’t function. It is only there for cab heat when the engine is not running and it comes standard in the delivery/utility sprinters (I.e. not passenger sprinters). Hopefully that is it and maybe that helps. I would google Espar D5 and if it looks like the connection than that’s all it is.
Appreciate the video, where is the over flow hose going? On the coolant expansion tank. I have one and it keeps going out that hose. And it is not running hot. Just loosing coolant out hose. The system holds pressure .
If it’s the overflow hose it would just dump out next to the expansion tank. That’s odd that it keeps overflowing. I don’t fully know what to look for in that case but I’d consider doing a complete coolant flush or replacing the cap. Let me know if you end up finding a solution.
One of the best, informative video on Sprinter. I have 2005 Sprinter (Winnebago) and this vid made me familiar with the engine. I have one defect in my transmission. I replaced my transmission two years ago in indianapolis and last year my gear lever stick will change by itself from higher to lower gear and have to push the lever to wards passenger side. Most of the time Gears will shift properly and works fine but suddenly it will change and i have to keep an eye on gear display in the dash all the time. Any suggestion ??
That is a weird one! Way over my head though, hopefully you find an answer. Personally I would think it’s an issue with your shifter and not your transmission but I honestly don’t know
My 2006 sometimes won't shift up out of 2nd geer? I have to pull over, shut off and restart. They want $1,400 to replace the trans speed sensor. I'm retired 15 years and to cheep to get it done yet.
Please show where the MassAirFlow sensor is and the glow plugs and the glowplug module which is under the battery. This vehicle is not a 04-06 cause my baby is that age. I just replaced the median bearing on the two piece drive shaft with a redesigned bracket (MB part) that shifts the median bearing and drive shaft over to the passenger side for extending the life of the drive shaft components and life of the median bearing. Also the hand brake yoke under the van needs some oiling now and then. Wheel bearings need about 1/4 turn off from full tight when setting the tension after relube or replacement. The water in the overflow for the radiator should be filled to about 1/2" above the coils. Thanks for the vid BB.
I would suggest you fit the schraeder valve caps on your AC system.....dust is a killer. And the valves themselves may not be 100% leak proof....caps will help with any leakage.
Great vid! Just bought a 2006 Sprinter and cannot figure out all the dash controls (all symbols) and if the LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time? Could you make a vid and explain the DASH CONTROLS and how they all work? Thanks!
@@GetBusyBuilding No, I'm talking about ALL the controls on the control panel which includes the HVAC controls, locks, fans, lights, etc. And I also want to know if the HEAD LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time because mine are and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn them "OFF". Thanks!
That is a great question. I hope others leave comments here for that. My biggest go to is the OBDII reader… it helps trouble shoot anything. Next might be duct tape…. You can temporarily repair a lot of hoses that way to limp wherever you have to. Beyond that I’m not sure what else I would carry constantly on the road with me. The more the merrier, but space is always limited. It may vary on a vehicle by vehicle basis as you gain background with your sprinters own quirks
Exhaust manifold are very similar on just about all engines, they almost all look the same and are bolted on either side of engine. Easiest way to find it would be to Google an image of an exhaust manifold or look up the part for your sprinter on an auto parts website (autozone, oreillys etc), then locate the part on your engine. Another way to do it would be to start with your exhaust pipe, trace it back to the turbo, and from there keep tracing to the exhaust manifold. I just spent time and tried to understand each system independently. It makes sense when you think about the flow of air, flow of coolant, flow of oil, flow of gas. All these systems are or mostly separate, once you trace components with a given system it can become easier. Best of luck to you!
I'm having issues with the coolant system. The coolant keeps going out the pipe next to the cap. What is this pipe, is it some sort of pressure release? Thanks
I just bought a 2005 2500 diesel sprinter freightliner, I'm in the process of converting it to an RV..my question is, should I worry about not finding a auto shop on my travels across the USA that would fix my van if needed...
Congrats on the van! I’m stoked for you. If it were me I wouldn’t be too worried about finding a network of shops. I would learn what you can about the engine so if something comes up you know whether you can fix it or if you need a mechanic; if something comes up you’ll have to use the forums or whatever else to find a mechanic. Most things you can be done fairly easily on your own though. You’ll find what’s best for you in no time at all!
@@GetBusyBuilding sound advise ,. Thanks to your video I'm more familiar with the engine, I will revert back to it when Needed.tks again for taking the time to inform other folks it really helps...
Good video. I might be picking one up, I’ll definitely delete the fan clutch and do a ford taurus electric puller fan, fan controller, and block off the egr. What is the point of a turbo resonator? Can it be deleted?
This video could have saved me a LOT of time over the years.

Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Missed the lower intercooler hose below the left headlight. There are 3 hoses to check for leaks when it goes into limp mode.
Good call, thank you!
Great video of the engine, can you make a video of any of the problems you had ?
Thanks brother
So helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I would suggest you fit the schraeder valve caps on your AC system.....dust is a killer. And the valves themselves may not be 100% leak proof....caps will help with any leakage.
Great point 👍
Great vid! Just bought a 2006 Sprinter and cannot figure out all the dash controls (all symbols) and if the LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time? Could you make a vid and explain the DASH CONTROLS and how they all work? Thanks!
Are you specifically talking about the AC controls?
@@GetBusyBuilding No, I'm talking about ALL the controls on the control panel which includes the HVAC controls, locks, fans, lights, etc. And I also want to know if the HEAD LIGHTS are supposed to be on all the time because mine are and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn them "OFF". Thanks!
very helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you!!
THANK YOU!
thanks for the info
Thank you
Another question...is there a list of spare parts one should have stored in the van, ie serpentine belt a etc...
Great video, thanks! Do you know where the heck the exhaust manifold is? Also how did you learn all this/ where did you even start?? Thanks!
@@GetBusyBuilding wow, that's all super helpful - thank you!!
Do u have to plugged in exterior outlet on winter and where is the plug located thank you
No, so far we haven’t needed a block heater. We started up in as low as -4 degree weather
I'm having issues with the coolant system. The coolant keeps going out the pipe next to the cap. What is this pipe, is it some sort of pressure release? Thanks
Maybe check your coolant reservoir cap, they have testers at most auto parts stores
Nice run through. think i was about 90% with you. maybe some more horn details, yes OEM is embarrassing. brand, install
