- Join the Old Sloth Hiker, Fred Donelson, as he teaches you how to make an inexpensive yet efficient underquilt that will keep you warm down to the 40s F for about $15! The key component is a reflective solar blanket, using reflective mylar to reflect your body heat. Works when wet, and only weighs about 4 oz.
Great idea, thanks for showing the process. I wonder if a non mylar emergency blanket would work, thinking it would be quieter. Could you install this between your hammock and UQ and get a higher R rating, assuming proper fit?
I've thought about adding a Costco quilt inside the mylar. The noise doesn't bother me, but I know it does some folks. I'm looking for light weight.
If I need a high R Value, I just use my normal down UQ. But you are correct ... the insulation would be higher with proper fit.
@@freddonelson5505 I was talking about using the SOL blanket, it does not crinkle and tear. Just got one in my hands, it is completely quiet so far, have to do some measuring and then give it a go.
I am a first time hammock hanger and I'm making an underquilt. Please tell me the dimensions of your 3.0 quilt. I don't want to be at my camp and have it wrong. The S.O.L. I have is 58x98 inches and I know I will have to cut some off. Thank you for not using terms I am not familiar with. God Bless you.
Hey, this is a great idea! Did you have any condensation issues when using it?
I have not had condensation issues. People said I would, but I haven't.
@@freddonelson5505 ok thanks for the answer, I'm building a space uq too. And I'm thinking, even if there is condensation I would just have to lower the uq to let a little air flow under the hammock
