In this video, we’re gonna focus on those losers. Er, uh...those losing candidates. While there have been 45 different individuals who have served as President in American history, there have been tens of thousands of people who have run for President, and yes most of them stood little chance of winning. Approximately 55 of them were actual contenders, meaning it appeared they had at least a solid chance of winning going into the final weeks of their campaigns.
My criteria for qualified candidates is simple:
They had to be a major contender
They had to run before the year 2000
They couldn’t later win the Presidency.
Now, how I picked these top 10 is also simple. I looked at:

“The Great Compromiser”
I sometimes see Canadians brag that our election campaigns are "so short" compared to American ones, but it's hard to do a one-to-one comparison. Americans generally count the primary campaign as being "part" of the general election, even though technically, under US law, the general election only begins after the two parties both officially nominate their candidates in the summer. That makes a formal US presidential race take place from August-to-October which isn't THAT long.
A Canadian election would also last a year or more if we count it as starting from the moment people start running to be heads of the different parties, and thus candidates for prime minister. So you could say the current election for prime minister has been ongoing since January of 2020, since that's when the Conservative Party leadership election began.

@@donkey7921 Nominations by popular vote for political parties is one of the worst ideas the US has ever had. We would have much more moderate candidates from both parties if party insiders were the only ones who could vote on nominations. We should only be able to vote in general elections and we should not allow government to subsidize private organizations like political parties in their attempts to nominate a candidate through the primary system.

@@donkey7921There is no such thing as a “two-party system”. If you think we have one, the entire problem is in the mirror. We only have (and SHOULD only have) a choice between status quo and radical change to the political left OR radical change to the political right, giving us three options in EVERY election IF democracy is to work at all. That means we either need a three party system OR we need both of the two parties to mirror each other. However, the two main parties sold you and every other American who foolishly believes in the primary system s bill of goods. They claim, “why vote for third parties when you can vote for change in your own party?” However, this is NOT the way it is supposed to happen. This is because radicals in the two main parties dominate the primary system, so they push us to radical change in EVERY election, which is why Washington DC is so dysfunctional. I am sorry but too much democracy actually DESTROYS democracy and anyone who wants the primary system to stay is a supporter of a purely evil system that is designed to work poorly. It is literally the major reason our entire country is being destroyed from as radicals end up controlling both parties and moderates are sidelined from public discourse..
The purpose of third parties is to force change in the two main parties. That is their ONLY function but they are NECESSARY for the system to work. When the Whigs and the Democrats made the Compromise of 1850, the Free Soil Party came on the scene, NOT to win but rather to force the two main parties to change. That is how we eventually abolished slavery with the Republicans rising up to replace the Whigs because the Whigs refused to change. Every subsequent major change, the two main parties decided to change because of a third party threat and ONLY because of a third party threat.
You see, the way the system is SUPPOSED to work is your ONLY choice is SUPPOSED to be status quo (either Democrat or Republican - it is NOT supposed to matter which one you choose) OR third party. Third parties are NOT “spoilers” or “wasted votes” - they are literally SUPPOSED to be the the ONLY option for change and you are SUPPOSED to have at least THREE options: status quo (with Republicans to the slight right of center and Democrats to the slight left of center). What about third parties? They are supposed to pull BOTH parties to the left OR the right, as the case may be. Third parties should ALWAYS and ONLY be given your vote if you want change. If you are voting for one of the two main parties, you ALWAYS are voting for status quo no matter who you vote for.
If both main parties are not stable but are instead either radical left or radical right (as it is now due to the primary system) then you have NO CHOICE for status quo and you can only choose between radical visions of the country, which is no choice at all if you want stability.
@@donkey7921 WRONG! The CURRENT system is anti-democratic because it is TOO democratic. The only way to save democracy is to ensure a choice between moderates and third parties but you are eliminating moderation. The public should pick the eventual winner in the general election. Only stupid people (like you) who want the two main parties to dominate forever would argue in favor of the current system. Elites are SUPPOSED to put up the status quo candidate and then the public is SUPPOSED to either vote for one of the two main parties OR a third party, which will force the actual change in one of the two main parties (or in both parties). It is NOT supposed to occur from within the parties themselves or else people start naively believing they are forced to choose between the lesser of two evils and you end up with insane presidential candidates like Trump leading the Republicans.

In fairness we haven't even had great candidates from 2000 - 2020 besides maybe Al Gore. The rest were a bunch of Neo Liberals and Neo Cons

@@nicholasclay1382 I'm referring to canadiates who got the nomination to one of the major parties because let's be honest Ralph Nader and Gary Johnson were never going to win. Andrew Yang didn't receive the nomination, so I don't count him either.
I think it’s because he didn’t vote in any elections before 2000. (He mentioned it in the retrospective election video, I think.)

I'm glad to see Ross Perot on here. I grew up in Texas more conservative than I've become, and Perot was very appealing to young me. I remember having a mock debate in school, where three of us had to portray the candidates and argue points they would make. Somehow I was chosen to play Perot - perhaps it was my big ears. Miraculously, I won our mock debate, just like the real guy won his. (A side note: my uncle Ron was an executive at EDS and apparently was fairly close to Perot, which is fun.)

Voted for Perot twice. In hindsight, a wasted vote, Clinton did a rather good job as President
I supported Perot as well. He made sense and I didn't care for the other 2 candidates.
John Anderson was the only Canidate I've met out in public. I saw him at a restaurant in 1979 and asked to talk to him about his plans for the environment, mainly to ask what his opinions are on what the environment of the distant future would be like. Strangely, he was happy to talk and offered me a seat. He was spot on with his predictions, he was wrong about how fast companies would fully adopt green alternatives though, he thought it would be much faster. When I had to leave, I paid for his meal as thanks. I would never see him in person again, I wish I asked for a way of contacting him directly
I remember kids in college in 1979 promoting him, students for Anderson blah blah blah, having campus booths and rally’s in the “grove”
I asked a few at the booth, “what policies of his do you particularly like?”
They said “I don’t know them but boy is he great!”
I was a freshman in college at the time

Not a Potato, he doesn't do Presidents after 2000 because 2000 was the first election in which Mr. Beat voted for President, and he keeps his actual votes to himself.

Robert Kennedy? I mean, he died, but if he had lived, I think he would've made a great president.
He would have had the Mafia escorted right to prison. And the communists would have received little mercy. He also would have won in a landslide using his brother's popularity. The whole world was robbed of two great men when the Kennedys were assassinated.

I LOVE your number one choice!!! In 1980 I served as local campaign chairman for Anderson and then travelled the country supporting his candidacy.
My only compensation was a stack of bumper stickers which I have yet to exhaust. Every car I’ve owned in the past 41 years has sported an authentic, original “Anderson for President” sticker.
It doesn’t happen all that often, but I do occasionally get pulled aside by an old geezer who remembers Anderson fondly. We chat about him and always agree that we’d have a better country today if JA had been elected.

I love that idea! Midterms have a massive impact on the second half of every president's terms. Maybe he doesn't need to cover every single one, but at least going back to 1900 would be really cool.

Surprised no ones mentioned him so far but by far my favorite candidate to never win is Henry Wallace, the Progressive Party candidate from 1948. I agree a lot with what he stood for at that time and I really enjoyed his platform. He kinda fell off after that point but I would’ve loved to see a future where he defied the odds.
He would never ever win 48 as a populist. His best chance would be 1948 as the sitting president, if he was still VP when FDR died

Perot was the first person I ever voted for. He would have won in he hadn't dropped out of the race then got back in.
That and his choice for running mate.
I think he may have gotten some electoral votes but the two main parties wouldn't have let a third party win

I loved your conclusion on the characteristics of good leaders! Another one that I look for is the ability to listen in their communication style. Too often the loud-mouthed candidate gets popular attention and is lauded as bold for never changing their mind on anything. What those candidates actually demonstrate is an unwillingness to integrate new information into their decision-making process.

Fun fact: Two of my favourite people in history was born in the same year. Abe Lincoln and Charles Darwin were both born in 1809.

You're right, I did love the #1 pick. Anderson is one of my favorite presidential candidates. I actually managed to get my hands on one of the few remaining copies of the book written about his campaign.
I grew up in Northern Illinois. I remember being 11yo and hearing my dad get all worked up when John Anderson announced his candidacy. A true WTF moment at my house.

Constantly learning great deal of stuff, no matter how familiar I might be with names! And I always love the endings of your videos - You manage to outline right on spot things that cross my mind as well. The red flags on a potential candidate and not being able to help but think to yourself "My! Why is that person even happy to be advancing in the race... Does he not know this job will be the HELL of his lifetime??" Yeah, for real! :D

Hey, Mr.Beat, just a suggestion of a video: Who would be the person that descends from most U.S presidents? I was watching a documentary on Richard Nixon and realized that his daughter was married to Eisenhower's grandson, making their children descendents of two presidents. I was wondering if there is someone that has more than 2 presidential ancestors.
Yes, there are people with multiple direct ancestors who were president.
The daughters and grandchildren of George W. Bush have both Bushes for ancestors. As do the descents of John Quincy Adam’s have both Adams as ancestors. Descendants of Benjamin Harrison also have William Henry Harrison as a direct ancestor.

You got 19,000 less votes than Thurmond and if you hadn't run Truman would have won New York meaning that 1916 would have been the last time New York went to the losing Republican instead of 1948.

@@koreywitabagg665 Thanks and Truman lost New York in 1948 by 61,000 votes to Dewey. Wallace got over 500,000 votes in New York in 1948 and Wallace pulled a lot of liberal voters away from Truman who previously voted for FDR causing Dewey to win New York by a 1% margin. But even though Truman lost New York, he still got 303 electoral votes and won the election. If he won New York, he would have gotten 350 electoral votes.

Henry Clay would be mine, although Hubert Humphrey an Tom Dewey are really underrated also. Humphrey in particular came super close to actually winning in 1968 and I think would have been able to do a ton if he’d won given his experience in the Senate helping to pass stuff like the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Am i the only one who founds US history more interesting than the history of his own country ( I am from Czech Republic).

Personally I find Czech history pretty interesting, from the Kingdom of Bohemia and Hussites, to interwar Czechoslovakia, the later Communist regime and Alexander Dubcek and the Prague Spring 🇨🇿
I’m from Italy and yes, US history is more interesting then my country’s history
History is interesting. I had a chance to visit the Czech Republic and Slovakia in the fall of 2019 and found it very fascinating. I love US history, but I’m most obsessed with the history of Great Britain. Perhaps we find interesting those topics we don’t necessarily grow up with?

Could you make a top 10 US Attorney General list? I think it would be quite interesting and bring light to a relatively unknown position compared to Senators, President, and Vice President.

WHAT ABOUT MY MAIN MAN TRPPLE H??? He was for civil rights back in 1948 way before it was cool, he had loads of vision, always had the support of labor, basicly the main force behind Medicare and Medicaid, an incredible public speaker, was super chill about his loss in 1968 despite the popular vote being so close. Basicly a legend in Minnesotan politics as fighting Bob was for Wisconsin politics there's slot of stuff named after him in the Minneapolis St. Paul area. Also was a huge influence on Walter Mondale who I also think should have made the list. (Can you tell I'm Minnesotan.) Great video tho John Anderson does get overlooked glad to see him get a shoutout.

Fact of the Day: I own a campaign shirt of John B. Anderson! I got it for an excellent price, and couldn’t be more happy to own it. Anderson was very underrated, and similar to your stance, I wish he would get more attention.

Ay, I got an Anderson campaign button from an antique shop.
Another thing about these candidates, over half of them were third party candidates (including your top 3). So the outsiders tend to have an advantage here.
Also my dad voted for John Anderson in his first election, but never really told me why. All he says is his dad told him it was a wasted vote.
Many of us supported Anderson because he was smart, honest, and centrist, and we didn't want to have to choose between Carter and Reagan. An Anderson quote about those two: "Reagan would lead us in the wrong direction, and Carter has been leading us in circles."

As I recall, in 1992 there was a guy supposedly running who included giving every american a YoYo in his platform. I don't know how you missed him.
I've always wanted to make a channel similar to yours but for British politics instead. Like using this video as an example, I can think of thousands of people off the top of my head who ran for PM, and would've made great PMs, but sadly lost. It's a shame I don't really have much time to do something like that.
I think Eugene Debs should be the number one honorable mentions. I completely agree with your list though. But Debs was amazing!

4) ross perot (didn’t agree with his war on drugs stuff or his flat tax, but a win from him would’ve been HUGE to break to duopoly and we’d probably have a strong third party today if he won)
3) henry wallace (we’d see a far better second half of the twentieth century if he won or if he wasn’t robbed at the 44 convention. he was so far ahead of his time and the people of his time hated him for it)

Bernie Sanders is only a populist for a small but vocal part of the population. Not a populist like Mateusz Morawiecki or Viktor Orbán.
William Jennings Bryan would’ve been a great option, but if McKinley hadn’t defeated him we probably would never have gotten Teddy Roosevelt.
I think Perot supported raising the top marginal tax rate to 35%, while Clinton supported raising it to 39%. Essentially I think Perot was a Moderate Populist version of Bill Clinton. This is because Clinton and Perot has similar policy platforms, with the exception of Perot being even more of a Fiscal Conservative than Clinton.

Can we really expect that capitalism is the final form of economics? If not, what comes next if not a form of socialism

Great video! Glad you put WJB in this list- I just love this guy, he was definitely ahead of his time and unfortunately one of the most underrated figures in American history.
My #1 is usually Fighting Bob or Henry Clay but I can to an extent respect Anderson. Would’ve preferred if he beat Reagan and Carter. Speaking of which, you should do a “What id John Anderson was elected in 1980?” video.

Interesting list. A lot of good names, though I note that only 3 of the 10 were nominees of one of the two major parties, and of those only one (Tilden) came close to winning the electoral vote. I would be curious which other major party nominees (Humphrey? Mondale? Dole?) you would put on the list beyond Tilden, Wilkie, and Bryan from that category.

I like that you present facts without putting any spin to it. You do objective analysis of issues at hand without corrupting the content with your bias or political opinion like most RUclipsr do. I would request you to make video on how great American cities like Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago became ghettos and unsafe places. Most of the videos i have seen squarely puts the blame on one community.

@@iammrbeat I did watch it. It was informative. I am just looking for video which can explain the downward spiral of these great American cities. I believe corruption in local government, Institution and government's apathy towards people of color contributed to this decay. I have seen a lot of travel videos where the creator is telling that these cities are unsafe and there has been mass migration out of the cities. Just wanted to know your objective analysis on these cities especially focussing on Government's action (or inaction) which contributed to the demise of these cities.
