- Helping your horse release tension in the back with Masterson Method bodywork is a great idea. Tension that develops over time can cause rigidity in the back, affecting movement and adding stress to other parts of the horse's body. For example, lower back muscles and fascia that don't have a full range of motion can transfer stress to other parts of the hind end, like the stifle, lumbar, hamstrings, and gluteals. A restricted back can also result in a short-striding gait.
The Lateral Rocking Technique is a great Masterson Method®️ technique to help the horse release tension along the entire back because it creates movement in the soft tissue between the individual vertebrae of the spinal column. It consists of gently rocking the horse's spinal column side to side, from head to tail, in a relaxed state. This exercise also simulates natural hind-end movement in the relaxed horse. Watch Jim explain how to do this technique and get the rhythm going!
