- When doing the Head-Up Technique your goal is to take the weight of the head and neck off his poll and atlas. You can do this by having it rest on your shoulder, your arm, or your hands, wherever he is most comfortable. If he has a lot of tension, it's probably best you try first to take the weight off his poll by resting his head on your hands, as Jim does in the video.
You can start by doing a little bit of Lateral Cervical Flexion to bring his head slightly to the side. This will make it easier for the horse to relax his head in your hands. It's important to go slowly, stay as relaxed as possible, and give the horse time to relax in this position.
Once the horse is relaxed you can gently move the joints of the poll, atlas, and upper neck very slowly through a gentle range of motion. If that is too much for your horse, you can simply just hold and wait for the horse to feel it. You will notice his eyes softening or closing, and his head will get heavier as the muscles relax. Watch Jim's video until the end to learn how to get the feel of this technique.
