This video made my week man! I'm rebuilding a 98 2.8 quattro w/ the 5spd, it's a blast. With those miles though I'd do yourself a favor and check to see if the previous owner had the timing belt and hydraulic tensioner replaced!
Great review! Had the A4 B6 and same generation Passat with the 5V 1.8T engine. Found one of these for cheap with only one owner throughout its life. Mint condition throughout. Wasn't planning on buying another car but I can put it to use this upcoming winter. Torsen and the V6 sound should keep me happy until spring :)
Very nice!! wow does it make a great induction noise, and its just a happy nice car to drive around in, a few complex things to repair if they go wrong, but not much worse then other cars. One owner, sounds like a real find, especially in the ludicrously expensive current used car market.
I just bought a blue 2001 a4 2.8l 30v quattro for 400 it is really nice just needed a timing chain tensioner they were going to scrap the car because they didn't want to work on it so I replaced the tensioner now just waiting until Friday to have someone do the timing I cant wait now I'm even more excited after this video I've drove a 6,000 dollar 2001 a4 1.8t but it wasnt half as nice as mine thats what's nice about living in a small town in Montana everyone drives trucks so you can find killer deals on really nice cars great video
The A4 B5 is a great car, however I think anyone who is looking for one should save up for the b6 as it is much nicer features wise. I'm not sure if there is any problems with reliability or anything else as I live in europe where most of them just come with the indestructible 1.9 TDI engine
I'm sure you're right about the B6, they still came with motors that didn't have the rear timing chain problems as well. I would have enjoyed more power as well that the B6 comes with, I'm not sure any of them came with the 1.9 here in North America, everything is gas outside of a few VW models. Thanks for watching!
I have both the 12valve b5 and the last gen 2001 20valve b5 and I love BOTH .. 12valve is so much simpler but the 30 valve makes a significant amount more power. They're both just awesome
@@Kingsoupturbo could just be my 12v is more tired compared to the 30v .. but yes the difference is real! The transmission on my 01 has tiptronic so that's a big plus as well
Found mine covered in moss and dirt with two flats and a dead battery at a junkyard. At first I saw it and it was straight all around, I looked underneath and saw a shiny exhaust front to rear and said hmm could we start it up. Turned right on and was way too quiet then I saw the mileage. Mid 5,000 miles and said damn I'm buying a car today. Just passed 16k like three months ago, five speed too
@@Tony-dn8xu $1500. Only needed tires, and a new battery. Maybe wasted money on changing the oil because it was gold when I drained it at the 5000 miles it had. Around 49,000 miles now.

Do regular check ups on the fan clutch. When it fails you get no warning and my mechanic never mentioned the existence. I went through 4 ac compressors on my ‘96 Front Track MT 5 speed. I sold the car cause of the rotted out suspension and other stuff was so costly to repair. I had driven it for over 20 years! But such a amazing car in so many ways.
I have a 1996 Audi A4 2.8 Quattro Ive owned for almost 5 years now, 3rd one Ive owned for that specific year/model & my favorite model. B5 ftw! The 12V 2.8 is slightly less powerful but MUCH more reliable than the 30V which is a tradeoff I'd take any day. Also have a 2000 Audi A6 2.7T Quattro, I gotta say the 2.7T motor is so complicated and needy. Not for your average joe! No Audi shoud be owned, driven or serviced by people who arent mechanically familiar
Nice!! I've seen the timing chain setup on the 2.7 and later 3.0 etc motors, pretty scary stuff! nice! I didn't know the 12v was that much more reliable, superb!!

Just bought a 2001 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 liter 5 speed. $900! Mine has the 30 valve head though. A lot quicker than the HP numbers would suggest. and still almost 30Mpg. Living in Wisconsin, I was looking for a cheap AWD car for my daughter to learn in (15 yrs old) Yes it needed a new CV joint, tires and some other minor things. Fixed it on the cheap myself. Motor is smooth up to redline. Never had any car like that before.

I have owned a 96 A4 5 speed manual since about 2006 and I can't part with her.My Samantha needs some work but her big brother the A8 demands my attention. I plan on starting a restoration project on it this summer. I bought it from a dealer near Chicago. I still have the pictures of it that were posted online from the dealer. I took a one way grown ups trip on a plane from BWI to Chicago all by myself. I didn't have navigation so I printed out the directions from mapquest. I caught a cab from the airport to the dealer and Inspected the car when I got there. I am a mechanic so I knew what to look for and everything checked out ok. Great price but a long drive home, I enjoyed the scenery tho. I had never driven that far before but I was able to get her home safely. It was the prettiest car I had ever owned at the time and its been highly reliable. Well over 300,000 miles now and still kicking, no plans of getting rid of her at the moment.

I bought the last year with a timing belt. I did my research after putting a deposit on a a beautiful top of the line A8 at a dealer. Found out that it had a timing chain issue, it was a very faint sound you could only hear with the hood open. A slight slap of the chain inside due to slack in the timing chain. The worst part is the dealer knew but did not acknowledge it until I asked for my deposit back. Anyway i found a 06 with a timing belt and I'm happy with that so far!
Prices on used cars are so crazy around the world right now, its really regional. Is that in USA? that might be normal now, usually you'd expect a 2007+ 2.0T Quattro for 5000$ but you know, crazy times! thanks for watching

@@MrSamsunggalaxytab You're not wrong, Audi parts, some are less expensive but some are pricey and harder to find. This engine did have a bunch of oil leaks and they are hard to service. If its your one car, personally, I'd look for something newer with easier parts and service, Honda accord, Camry, Subaru Legacy, something like that. The Audi is really cool if you can fix your own car, but they are overly complex for a single car daily driver at this age. I had to get a single suspension bolt for this car at the Audi dealer, it was 42$, FOR ONE bolt. Thats how it goes, best of luck in your search!

I think the upper control arms and wheel bearings can be almost worn out coming up to 60k miles, but I think its really dependent on use. I'd expect if its only got 45k miles, its been driven gingerly, and likely is in excellent shape! overall they're pretty reliable and well built, just need to keep on top of things so they don't build up and get out of control like this car became for the previous owner!
How much you buy it for I found one like yours but black exterior with 200k miles it had timing belt replaced it’s up for 1,000 it looks in mint shape they say it runs great with no issues as well

Kingsoupturbo super clean too! Looks like no rust which is amazing. I have a 96 2.8 in emerald mica (green). I hated the colour but now it’s one of my favourite! The odd colours are always the best. Most B5 generation A4’s here are Santorin Blue or one of the 3 blacks

Its got a big crack! in Calgary they put a lot of course stone down on the roads in winter for traction, most windshields are cracked in this city. Interesting! 2500$ US is a good amount of money for a A4 of this vintage, I'd want to be sure its in excellent shape for that cash! best of luck with your purchase!

They bought a tank on the cheap because they couldn't afford the $70K plus transportation for a running one. Have they even moved it from England yet to the Netherlands? That alone will cost them around $15K. Again, I WANT Milo to prove me wrong and make me eat my words because I enjoy tank restoration projects. If you don't see another post from Milo about this tank, there's your answer. Remember our fragile man ego about being wrong, making a mistake. We hate admitting we were wrong, made a bad purchase, etc...

I read some other comments as well on that video from people asking why he didn't just buy a runner from central europe instead of that, frankily, pile of garbage from the UK. Oh, and Yes, I've bought an expensive project that I had to let go. I think a lot of us have done that. Big dreams, talk ourselves into dropping money on it, then reality slaps us in the face but our ego's don't let us walk away from it. I think Milo is there right now. If it was a WWII German tank in the same condition, doesn't matter which one, then I would have bought it, but not a Walmart version of a T-55. I do give him credit for his ambition, that is admirable.
@@chadlares Agreed, many times now I"ve not know when to quit on big projects that weren't worth the time! we've all been there, the excitement of that tank got the better of him I think, hopefully, he backs out of it and re-routes to something that will be interesting but not so expensive and time intensive! I suppose the WW2 tanks are far more interesting eh! That T69 is pretty neat if it wasn't totally ruined, it'll be interesting to see what happens! I don't think Milo has ever tackled anything remotely close to this level of pain!

They bought a tank on the cheap because they couldn't afford the $70K plus transportation for a running one. Have they even moved it from England yet to the Netherlands? That alone will cost them around $15K. Again, I WANT Milo to prove me wrong and make me eat my words because I enjoy tank restoration projects. If you don't see another post from Milo about this tank, there's your answer. Remember our fragile man ego about being wrong, making a mistake. We hate admitting we were wrong, made a bad purchase, etc...
No kidding! the answer got edited! I'm surprised at that! I agree I think its beyond the scope of what they'd find fun. I read some other comments as well on that video from people asking why he didn't just buy a runner from central europe instead of that, frankily, pile of garbage from the UK. I love his channel and seems like a great guy with interesting projects, I hope he does bail on that UK scrap and find something more worthy, maybe a BMP that is less expensive. Thanks for your info! I've bought so many wrong projects and really tried to learn from them, never admit I'm wrong, keep hammering away wasting time and money on something not worth it.
Oh, and Yes, I've bought an expensive project that I had to let go. I think a lot of us have done that. Big dreams, talk ourselves into dropping money on it, then reality slaps us in the face but our ego's don't let us walk away from it. I think Milo is there right now. If it was a WWII German tank in the same condition, doesn't matter which one, then I would have bought it, but not a Walmart version of a T-55. I do give him credit for his ambition, that is admirable.
@@chadlares Agreed, many times now I"ve not know when to quit on big projects that weren't worth the time! we've all been there, the excitement of that tank got the better of him I think, hopefully, he backs out of it and re-routes to something that will be interesting but not so expensive and time intensive! I suppose the WW2 tanks are far more interesting eh! That T69 is pretty neat if it wasn't totally ruined, it'll be interesting to see what happens! I don't think Milo has ever tackled anything remotely close to this level of pain!
