Thank you. Just saved me being stuck had thrown everything I knew at it key jiggle wise lol. Was 50 miles out caught in a snowstorm in alaska off road lol. Thanks
Always, always, always make sure the vehicle's transmission is in park or neutral so engine doesn't fire up and you accidentally run yourself over. I can't stress this enough! People get injured and often killed every year from said unsafe practice. It's a tragic thing that can easily be avoided. Having grown up farming, I realize the need to do this sort of thing on occasion to get a job done. Regardless, the best thing you can do is fix/replace the starter solenoid or ignition switch feed circuit (trigger wire, as you call it in the video) the correct way as soon as possible.
Excellent point, this procedure has gotten me home many times where I could fix the starter. Also a cure for the Classic hot Small Block Chevy starter issue. But safety first is always the rule
If you are trying to start the vehicle this way you need the key on to give electricity to the coil, computer, fuel pump etc. May not work on vehicles with safety interlock.
it means the starter is good and it could be a different issue, including, but not limited to the ignition switch, the key cylinder, a loose wire, etc.
Typically it’s the solenoid or key switch that needs replaced. If you jump it and it does nothing then the starter is bad or the gear in the starter is stuck. Hit it with a hammer to loosen it up. If all that fails you need a new one or rebuild it.
on manual transmission, do i just turn the key to "on" (obviously in neutral), will the starter do the rest of the work or do i need someone in the driver seat to turn the ignition on while this is happening?
what's ironic is my 84 z28 is broken down at advance auto where I work and I'm thinking that doing this will be just enough for me to get it back to my garage. I hope this saves me a towing bill
surpss No, it's really not magic at all. It's an all too common yet very, very potentially dangerous bypass method. Please be extremely careful if ever trying this. Always make sure that your vehicle's transmission is either in neutral or park when attempting such a practice, to avoid accidentally running yourself over. Nobody wants to read about you in the obituarys!
Impossible to tell without being there and looking at things. You could check the voltage before and at the connector to see if there is a voltage drop.
Does not mean the starter us bad, could be an ignition or wire problem. On older Chevy engines, the heat from the engine would soak into the solenoid and cause excessive resistance so the starter would not engage. I used to have to start my 68 camaro this way till I put a heat shield around the starter to keep the heat from the headers from soaking into the solenoid.
+MightyThor yup cuz i went to autozone one day and i saw a Lil tiby jumping cable so i may conect the normal jumping cables with the lil ones an then connect them to the solenoid
+Hola soy pollo it's because my guy from the city next to me was selling a 99 Pontiac grand a. it looks clean from outside but he didn't send me pic of inside and it was a 1000 buck now he said 500 just because he said the starter doesn't work and I got a simple question if I jumped stared like that can I ride the car for lets say 20 mins? so that I get to a yunk yard of my city and buy a used starter and install it myself?
That all depends on whether the starter is broken or not. This will not usually work on a broken starter. This is usually done when there is a problem with the wires going to the starter, or when a starter is too hot and the solenoid has too much resistance (hot chevy starter). If it is only the solenoid that is bad this might or might not get you running. If the starter motor is bad this will not fix that problem.
+MightyThor yup it's just in case of emergency I know it won't fix it xD but I hope it works if not I just have to buy the starter first and just replace it on his house thanks man !!!
jonathan rodriguez Most likely the starter solenoid is bad or potentially the starter bendix is bad. Either way, it's likely time for a new starter in your vehicle. Additionally, if you jump across the two larger terminals on the solenoid, and not across the hot heavy positive battery wire to the small "start" wire, on many starters, the bendix will not engage the ring gear on the flywheel, and you will only hear the starter motor spin over, without any engine cranking. Hope this info helped you better understand.
It will spin the starter, it won’t start a vehicle unless the key is in the ignition and other safety measures are engaged such as the foot on the brake etc.
Thank you. Just saved me being stuck had thrown everything I knew at it key jiggle wise lol. Was 50 miles out caught in a snowstorm in alaska off road lol. Thanks
Thank you for pronouncing it SOLE-en-oid and not SILL-uh-noid like everyone else.

Will this work on a 2007 Freightliner Century?
Ôii
Also should mention, ignition must be turned on for it to start.
With ignition off, it may turn but shouldn't start up.
Can confirm I have been ran over by my car doing this. Check that it's in neutral or park. I was extremely lucky
SAVED my A.S.S. -> can't tell you how grateful I am and deepest thanks
You just saved me a towing bill! Thank you!
Wish I would have seen this yesterday. Broke down at work and had to get like a 50 mile tow.... Cost me a boatload..
If you are trying to start the vehicle this way you need the key on to give electricity to the coil, computer, fuel pump etc. May not work on vehicles with safety interlock.
Saved my life!
AND MAKE SURE YOU’RE IN NEUTRAL BEFORE YOU JUMP IT OVER. This has been a public service announcement.
Great vid, thank you very much.
Is this with all gm? I have an 81 c10
is it bad for my car if the starter is connected directly to the battery wire and there's still a faint light on the charge
So if this method works and starts my Detroit 671 ..does it mean my starter solenoid is bad? Or does it mean my ignition switch is bad?
it means the starter is good and it could be a different issue, including, but not limited to the ignition switch, the key cylinder, a loose wire, etc.
Is the starter bad in this case or good?
Typically it’s the solenoid or key switch that needs replaced. If you jump it and it does nothing then the starter is bad or the gear in the starter is stuck. Hit it with a hammer to loosen it up. If all that fails you need a new one or rebuild it.
great video
I have had replaced the starter but still won't work unless I keep doing this process.
What could be bad? Ignition switch?
Help please
Im having this same problem!
on manual transmission, do i just turn the key to "on" (obviously in neutral), will the starter do the rest of the work or do i need someone in the driver seat to turn the ignition on while this is happening?
I know this is a super late response but I if you have a manual it would be easier to push start it
what's ironic is my 84 z28 is broken down at advance auto where I work and I'm thinking that doing this will be just enough for me to get it back to my garage. I hope this saves me a towing bill
So to do this would I need to jack my van up to get to my starter? Can I do this on my 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6 van?
No
tht looked like pure magic bruh
surpss No, it's really not magic at all. It's an all too common yet very, very potentially dangerous bypass method. Please be extremely careful if ever trying this. Thanks for the advice some people should stay away from car engines and leave it to the experts who know what they are doing.
Dont cross the two small terminals?
I have an 05 equinox and this is what I have to do....it's the connectors....is it just the connectors I need to replace? Has a brand new starter
Impossible to tell without being there and looking at things. You could check the voltage before and at the connector to see if there is a voltage drop.
Can this wirk in a pace arrow 1989?
If this starts my 2002 Silverado 1500hd, that means my starter is good? And that my problem is some where else?
yup
@@christopherpreciado7578 where should I check next?
Does the car still drive
Yes, once started it should drive.
So If Im doing this on my 05 Impala , does that mean a bad starter ?
Does not mean the starter us bad, could be an ignition or wire problem. On older Chevy engines, the heat from the engine would soak into the solenoid and cause excessive resistance so the starter would not engage. "the trigger wire"
I have a G6 coupe works when it wants to sometimes error on the dashboard some one had to start my car from the starter I'm so sick of that car
Is this bad for the starter
No, this just bypasses all the wires from the ignition switch, making sure any problems in that system are not involved.
Will that work with cadilacs ?
Yes, it will work with any GM Starter that had the solonoid on the starter motor.
MightyThor ok. What about a 95 cadilac
Yes, it will work. make sure the trans is in park.
MightyThor ok
thankssss
can i use a jumper cable?
You can use jumper cables, might be really tight trying to hook them up to the starter itself, might be easiest to hook to the battery cables.
+MightyThor yup cuz i went to autozone one day and i saw a Lil tiby jumping cable so i may conect the normal jumping cables with the lil ones an then connect them to the solenoid
+Hola soy pollo it's because my guy from the city next to me was selling a 99 Pontiac grand a. it looks clean from outside but he didn't send me pic of inside and it was a 1000 buck now he said 500 just because he said the starter doesn't work and I got a simple question if I jumped stared like that can I ride the car for lets say 20 mins? so that I get to a yunk yard of my city and buy a used starter and install it myself?

mine just spins up what does that mean

Wrong wire
Yes
will it work on a 06 Silverado
yes
no... heres why: anti theft
It will spin the starter, it won’t start a vehicle unless the key is in the ignition and other safety measures are engaged such as the foot on the brake etc.
😂🤣😂💯💯💯💯Thanks
Can this work on a 2001 honda accord. Help
no, not this way although you can find out where your silonoid is located and jump it from there
it may be on the fender
I have a buick can find starter
lol
