Have you tried Space Rangers?
A great game!
There used to be toys in the 80s called Starcom. The figures had little magnets in their boots and you could use them to activate certain features on the vehicles/base. Like the elevator on the base set would go up when you put a figure on it because the boot magnets lifted the switch under the elevator to cause it to rise. I think Coleco was making that toy line before they went out of business.
It had a pretty decent cartoon series that went with it.
oooo. i have a few of those.
I had all of that because my dad loved all the clever little mechanisms and ideas those toys had, so i was his excuse. I still remember putting on all the decals on a 'sidewinder' fighter together and being told why it was important to take time and care over it.
@@Silverfirefly1 Same!

Captain, this is HR. We've set up a mandatory appointment for you to come in and discuss your behaviour.
Really enjoyed the first Starcom game, gonna wait till this hits 1.0 before jumping in but hopefully it will be as fun as the first.
I started playing both games during early access and I have to say, unknown space is a hell of an improvement on nexus, which was already an amazing game
Based on Splatty's stream of it, (that just finished a few minutes ago) this one is a banger!
i've been burned enough in the last few years that i've completely sworn off ea games. damn this one is tempting, though.
It has released in 1.0 now!
This looks awesome but I've started waiting for 1.0. Been burned too many times now or just growing tired of either buying and waiting multiple years or playing every single update and being bored once full release happens.
It should be good. Their first game, Starcom Nexus, was a really fun game. I went into it blind after it randomly caught my eye and read some reviews, enjoyed it.
The first game was amazing. Really felt unique. The only problem was it was a wee on the short side and wasn’t all that relatable. Still an outstanding 2D space game.
This just looks like an improvement on that formula, and that’s saying something.
Been fiddling with this one for the past year. I usually play a campaign whenever a new beta build comes out. It's steadily improved and is a pretty good experience. Edit: When it comes to distributing crew skills, it IS better to spread them out--to a point. There are diminishing returns and other crew-oriented tech tree skills that accentuate a jack-of-all-trades approach. The gist is to have a specialist, but all crew members with some training in all skills.
id have to disagree.. unless youre using the crew skills theres no point to diversifying...it will only make you weaker when you get out of the starting areas and need high stats to get keep events done. Even if you ARE using the crew skills, you have to read carefully as some only need 1 point and others need 2.
@@rpscorp9457 It's a strategy. This will depend whether you initially value exploration or combat prowess. Going deep will help with exploration that hinges on that stat--and they all get used somewhere. Going broad will help with combat, which you're going to get caught up in regardless. You can always come back later to explore. If you don't use the crew tech tree, then it's just a matter of what crew skills you prioritize. However, things get rough later on and you may want the significant bonuses that come from the crew tech tree.
Starcom: Nexus, was legit one of the best games I have ever played. It was great fun, I have very much been looking forward to this one.
00:45 So basically Star Trek: Voyager but in the form of STARCOM Unknown. Say no more; I already like the premise!
But seriously, Star Trek: Voyager was my favorite series of the franchise. I just loved how everything was practically new uncharted territory for the fleet, and that two separate groups had to put aside their differences and work together if they wanted to return home. A lot of emphasis on galactic exploration and the humanizing of two opposing groups who, at the end of the day, have more in common than they realize.
Of course, I don't know if STARCOM take anything remotely like that into its game. Either way, space exploration with the goal of returning home sounds fun to me!
"When you come across a space-faring race that has tusks, you know they're going to be a problem."
LOL! So true!
man I miss Star Control. them devs need to straighten that shit out and make all the fans happy already.
Reminds me of a less complicated Space Ranger 2. It's beautiful but definitely much more low key.
If you've got nothing to do for a few months, why don't you start a series? If you have subs who actually like watching you, then they'd probably like to see that. Saying, "Nothing is coming out for a while" is a bit silly to say when there are plenty of new games coming out, but if there's nothing appealing to you, then try a series. Finish a game on your channel for once.
He does that a little bit already.
I think time isn't so kind to him as he seems to be busy... not that I know anything anyway...
man if i knew i got free life advice for starting a youtube channel, id done it a long time ago
He can’t stop talking long enough to do anything.
Loved the first game. Can't wait till this one comes out. Also as a fellow sesquipedalian lover it made me smile that someone else knew the meaning of shiboleth.
Starcom: Nexus was so atmospheric. It really captured the loneliness of deep space but also kept the action pretty intense whenever you encountered it.
What's the biggest ship you can get in this game? Can I get a dreadnought and become Death, Destroyer of Fleets, like in Starpoint Gemini 2 and Rebel Galaxy? I'm still waiting for a spiritual successor to Rebel Galaxy, complete with playable dreadnoughts, because Rebel Galaxy Outlaw is not what I wanted.
Just FYI. Biblically, the word shibboleth was used to identify enemy soldiers escaping a battle they lost to the Israelites. You were correct that it was because the other side could not say the word correctly.
After that, love your stuff. Gotten into a lot of great games because of your half hour shows. Keep it up!
they used this during a riot against french in Sicily in 13th century, too :)
Isn't Starcom a 80s cartoon with a giant toyline lol
yes. they had magnets in their feet
"Magna lock on". I had so many of the toys.
20 years later and still nobody can come even close to the 2000's Space Rangers
Man Space Rangers is still one of my favorite games ever made. Remember that kick ass soundtrack? damn was it fun.
@@randalthor6872 soundtrack and sounds, everything was perfect, will replay it someday
I was more of an Escape Velocity Nova guy
Space RPG 3 is an option for those who want something more combat focused.
I loved the first one. I hope the second one is even better.
It definitely is, it has improved content, graphics, and story compared to the first game
Looks like game been heavily inspired by Space Rangers from early 2000s
Hey Splatty there's a book I'd like to recommend to you called Tusk Love.
I went to add this to my wishlist and realized I already added it the last time you reviewed this. Looking forward to this coming out of early access.
This is exactly what happens to me, more often than i would like 😅
Reminds me a lot of Star Control 2 and Space Rangers, which is great!
I felt the original STARCOM story was surprisingly good for an indie space game.
Wish Wayward Terran Frontier hadn't died mid development
"All StarMax and StarWolf...SCRAMBLE!"
Reminds me of something i played in the 90s
100% can recommend for those who love check all events (in both games there is both a lot of them and they damn interesting). Ship crafting is basic (yet fun in its own) and space grinding is boring. Events is strong part of both games.
Oh.... so this is basically Star Trek Voyager: The Game. Nice! I always wonder how Voyager scenario would be like in a video game context. Your survival's on the line, your crew's survival is on the line, while your morals being questioned at every turn.
Typically AAA studios release during the holidays so I bet most indies avoid releasing during this time of the year to avoid being overlooked even easier than usual.
shibboleth
/ˈʃɪbəlɛθ/
noun
a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people, especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important.
"the majority, under the influence of vague nineteenth-century shibboleths, understood him to be associating himself with the doctrine that every nation has a right to be a sovereign state"
It's like Star Valor except in v3.0
Another fun word, klaxons! That's what we call the alert devices that people associate with the "red alert" starship / naval sounds. I believe people also use "klaxon" to describe the sounds themselves. An advanced space ship probably doesn't have a dedicated noise box anymore. That's more of a traditional naval thing, or I suppose a backsliding culture like Battlestar Galactica.
32:25
I have to say, this caught me off guard lmao. I was listening to the video in the background and that sound was extremely accurate, that has literally been the template of "Spaceship alarm" in my brain for my entire life lmao Excellent voicework
This game looks great! Definitely my cup of tea, thanks for showcasing Splattercat!
New to the channel. Love your coverage of indie games especially space games.
You should check out starsector, it's simply brilliant. Your audience will appreciate I think.
Keep up the good work 👏
I'm waiting for the starship Enterprise to get some seatbelts for all the chairs on the bridge.
Really enjoyed the previous game by this dev, this is looking like a big upgrade :)
That synopsis in the beginning is basically the entire plot of Star Trek Voyager.
23:11 I don't know of any reason why it couldn't be considered a missile without the explosive part, so maybe it just has propulsion and guidance, so the fast impact generates the explosion. A relativistic kill missile has missile in its name after all.
Feels like Space Ranger
Wait, "StarCom"? Isn't that a cartoon from the 1980's?
Enjoyed every iteration it's gone through so far, think that was four or five I was there for
So, Jepthah, Judge of Israel, said, "We really kicked those Amonite's butts. I told you that we didn't need the Ephramites."
And his advisors said, "Yes. Ephramites should spend less time amongst their sheep. They are foolish and never stay in formation, and would have cost us the live of many of our men."
And Jepthah said, "The Ephramites spend too much time in their tents with sheep, and not enough time with their women. They also talk funny. We had better keep an eye on them."
The Ephramites found out that they had missed the war and said to Jepthah, "You went to war with the Amonites without us?! But we wanted some of those rich spoils of war! We are highly irritated with you, Jepthah!"
And the Ephramites left their sheep alone for a bit and put together a big army and crossed over the river Jordan.
But wayfarers saw what the Ephramites were up to and told Jepthah.
Jepthah told the men of Gilliad, "Those greedy Ephramites are coming, just like I figured they would, so get your spears!"
Jepthah waited until the Ephramites were across the fords and upon the plains of Jordan, and then put a whole bunch of guards on the fords.
And Jepthah told the guards, "The Ephramites talk funny, so tell everyone that wants to cross to say 'Shibboleth'. If they can't say 'Shibboleth', don't let 'em cross over and leave the plains of Jordan."
The guards asked Jepthah, "And if they put up a fuss?"
And Jepthah told the guards to double tap 'em.
Then Jepthah and the men of Gilliad, having had just about enough of Ephramite sass, went and whooped some Ephramite @ss.
The Ephramites left their wounded behind and tried to get away from the Israelites by crossing the river Jordan to go back home to their sheep.
But, the Ephramites said 'sibboleth' instead of 'shibboleth' and got double tapped by the guards.
So, on that day, 42,000 of the greedy and ill-tempered Ephramites got unalived to death.

starcom: unknown space

airship: kingdoms adrift
Which do you like better?
Just a tidbit for people looking to try this. You will beat the available content pretty quickly here. I've got 11 hours on the game and pretty much completed all the available content and some of that was menu time, feedback, ect. If there is more available content its not presented. I uncovered the whole star map (according other maps on google), researched most stuff but not all, and generally found the whole experience alright. I last played Nov 23rd so maybe there is an update between my comment and when you read this but this should give you kind of a ballpark. My metric for games is .50 cents and hour. If I don't get that I'm not happy. Obviously I didn't get that here but thats not to say it wont be possible in the future. It just needs time in the oven.
the combat does seem pretty mechanically tight, the planet exploration stuff is always cool for games like this...and the ship building modules look really decent.,
Does anyone else remember AoL Games back in the day? There was one called Silent Death Online that is like the grandfather of this type of game. I'll have to check this one out cuz this is really giving me a nostalgic kick.
Mind you, this is from ONE dev. He chats with the players often getting feedback. Patchs often too.
This looks a lot like legendary slavjunk Space Rangers, but much more polished, damn its interesting
Oh, hey! Splat! I wanted to ask if you could maybe cover Colony Ship again as it's been a while-went to their steam page and was surprised to see the game released yesterday.
So, yeah! I'd love to hear your thoughts on it
Does anyone remember a 2d space game called solar winds? I think it was like late 90s or early 2k? If i remember the name correctly. That was first game like this that did it really well
Yep, loved Solar Winds. Not sure which one I played since that was a really long time ago.
Yep. I played Solar Winds. I think I've got the floppy disks around somewhere... 1993. The graphics were pretty decent for '93, as I recall. Everything was very readable and the UI worked well enough.
One thing I liked was that you actually had to cross the gulf of space to reach other star systems. Your first few missions were to get an experimental warp drive to let you explore other star systems. It took about 30-40 minutes at normal speeds to get there otherwise lol.
If the missile is "faster than light" it's probably using some sort of sci-fi space drive that bypasses the lightspeed limit (like warp drive) so the missile wouldn't gain the benefit of increased relativistic mass.
I miss Splattercat series...They Are Billions with Splat's intelligent commentary was great for me.
almost getting like a Starflight vibe from this, which coincidentally is my favorite game ever... >.>
There is a game Space Rangers, which was released 10 years ago by Russian developers. Starcom is just a pathetic copy.
I could see someone mod the main ship to resemble Voyager, as well as tweak crew names making this a Star Trek game. Name the area Delta Quadrant. That said, fires and smoke trails in the vacuum of space is an odd gaming/design choice.
I'm still waiting for a game like FTL but like this in action. Or a Space engineer that plays like FTL.
100% on the wishlist. Really looking forward to when it hits 1.0
You should have another look at Stellar Tactics. It's very different from when you last looked at it, Splat!
Thx for the video!
1:52 no releases? Is it because it's start of winter or because of, khm, certain game engine problems?
13:45 Partial fusion. Would also like to know the answer to this, I'm not an astrophysicist so I'm confused too.
Fusion is what happens in stars that much is fairly basic info. But for that to partially happen to a planet? I think it might be extremely rare.
Something something the mass in a gas giant isn't great enough to force the reaction so it fails the star exam.
I dunno, something about this Asteroids-esque, top down game design really doesn't do it for me. It's like an immediate turnoff for me.
In what ways is this similar to Escape Velocity? I used to love EV back int he day, was so amazing.
I’m always really put off by the ship design style here and in other games where the ships are essentially two dimensional. The ships growing in a lateral way looks really ugly and unrealistic to me. I think of a ship I think about a three dimensional object, not a hexagon.
Bit of Escape Velocity in this one.
Splat it likely would take more energy to move a heavy rod than a conventional weapon thus missiles being preffered to heavy rods.
Fantastic game. 30 hours in since this video went up. Build and modify your ship.
Soooo basically the aesthetics of Star Trek combined with the plot of Farscape? XD
this game immediately reminded me of Solar Winds from 1993 and I was like 'shut up and take my money'
How does this compare to Starsector? because personally Starsector is so good (especially with its wast modding scene) that any game like this has to be really goods to challenge it.
So not quite Starsector, but rather a more rpg focused one... that's good, now I have options between Starsector and this.
This really reminds me of Transcendence but with more modern visuals and gameplay.
Ohhh, a Starcom:Nexus sequel (more or less)?
Nice, and wishlisted.
Would it be recommended to play the previous game for this? Starcom Nexus
If researched, 1 point per crew member, per class, gives bonuses.
Yeah, this basicaly sounds like just ST Voyager.
Reminds me of SPAZ just without TotalBiscuit.
The original game was oretty fun. I bought it on GoG
Ooh this is kinda like Star Control! My favorite Sega Genesis game
LICK IT! 🍭
If there isn't any ship boarding and procuring, I'm not interested.
Hey Spattercat, can you share where you got the image for the thumbnail?
Me likes this. I have seen it on steam but passed it by thinking it was just another shooter. Me buys this me thinks.
Why not go around looking for some older indie games that you never made a video of that are still getting developed?
So Splat is saying this 1 ship and starbase has "gone who no man has gone before"? :)
Nothing like Everspace. Don't want it. It is a cartoon game.
looks like Space Rangers HD but better(?)
Over a year in early access, that's a shame, it was looking interesting.
did he just describe the whole plot of Star Trek Voyager lol
You described the plot of Farscape TV show, haha.
ooooh yes, now i know how to waste my after-graduation months!
thanks splat
Hi splatt, how is this game different from Starsector?
> tfw Splattercat accidentally invents RKKVs
been looking for a replacement for Armada on Dreamcast for years.
Played through the prequel, was pleasantly surprised, will definitely buy this :)
Also Shadows of Doubt when? :D
Just bought it. Looks like the beginning of a great game. Thanks for sharing.
its like a spiritual successor for Escape Velocity Nova , ill have to take a look
