I recommend using a seam ripper - it slides really well under the hair and snaps the strands with very little force. It's much easier than trying to use chunky scissors or a box cutter.
Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated.
Thanks. I had to do the same thing when I found that the screws holding the plate on, were put in by machine. The muscles in my right arm are shot, after the arm was broken twice and reset, 40 years apart. Since I couldn't remove the screws manually, I used the seam ripper. (Don't point the seam ripper towards yourself!) A 6" pair of scissors, works just as well. Cut the hair, pull it out until the roller is clean.
Shut up!!! THATS SO SMART!!
thanks for sharing I am just embarking on doing this right now and came upon your timely video - so thanks
Thank you for this video, in terms of my vacuum it was very easy to out the brush roll so I was quite lucky there and I made use of scissors just like you had and it easily solved the hair problem.
I have three cats and the hair that the vacuum collects in just one cleaning is unbelievable.
Same here… I have an animal sanctuary and the struggle is real.
The 3 long cats’ hair accounts for 95% of what gets caught on the brush roller. In my experience, long-haired cats are also the only ones who get hairballs.
Good things to be aware of before adopting a new kitty. 😽

It easier with sewing thread cutters. Tips of scissor are too thick! The thread cutters thin shape is great to clean within the brushes!
I use the letter openers that look like cards that businesses like UPS give out. Works really well!
Thank you!
This was super helpful
Can't believe I didn't think of this
Saved me the trouble of taking it apart
Excellent!
I have that same shark vacuum… The three gray plastic locks with the flathead indention… They unlock easily so you can take that bottom plate off, makes it much easier to access the roller the same way you’re doing… But without that guard on there
Im glad i’ve been doing it right lol i thought maybe taking it apart was better for it but i’ll just keep doing this 😂
I use a tiny pair of sharp, curved scissors so that I can get all the way to the edge. My roller is scarred up from digging them under the hair on the belt side. My hair is down to the back of my knees, so hair is a big issue for me and my vacuums. :) What you are doing is also what works for me.
HEY CHUCK! Could you show how to remove the lid to the roller?
Do people really not think of this? I had to do this with my crappy Shark for years, between every single vacuum session. Then I got a vacuum with great agitation that has a quick remove brush roll without tools (SEBO). I got their canister vac but even their Felix upright has the same ingenious feature. High recommend against the vacuums that have "power fins" or a fake brush roll as it doesn't clean carpets of dust and deep debris. You need agitation, which is what a sturdy brush roll can supply.
IKR? I've been using scissors to clean the roller since I was in high school and it's really not that efficient. I guess the search for a better method continues...
I've been lookin for something like this. I have multiple long haired animals and cleaning the brush roll has just about driven me mad. Can't afford a new vac rn but I'll def be checking out sebo
@@ghost-fs7th Hope you can save up for a SEBO in time! It has a steep entry price but considering it's easily a 20+ year vacuum with an insane warranty, it's totally worth it and a pleasure to own. I have enjoyed this vacuum more than almost any other home appliance purchase I have made, and our allergies have improved dramatically! Owner Shark, Dyson, and robot vacuums, and none could come close to comparing to SEBO.
I need to get hair/thread out of the axle connection. This doesn't do the trick.
Can you use a lighter and burn it?
turn on suction while cutting
The hair on the brush is only one problem. Hair in the bearing each end is a bigger problem, filling the void between the brush roller and the body of the machine if not completely stopping the roller from turning can course friction in the same place
I have a Hoover OnePWR Cordless Stick vacuum. The brush stopped turning. I cleaned it as best I could but still no luck. I needed to remove the roller but the supposedly easy to turn with a coin thingy would not budge no matter what. I wound up removing most of the out casing and pried the roller out. The belt was fine but it turned out a thin rubber seal had gotten bunched up and was inside the roller end making it impossible to turn. I cleaned out the debris and put it back together. Works fine now. I have no idea how the little seal managed to work it's way out of place but I suspect shoddy materials. Never did get the "turn with a coin" lock to move. Smh.
I owned 3 of these and they r crap everytime I cleaned the brush roll by removing it .. and the gears would lock up and stop moving .. I own a cleaning business and ckean my vacuums like every other day so to say the least I’m.. 3 strikes Hoover sucks and not in a good way lol
Do vacuums really need brush roll?
Switch it on turn upside down as per the video. Then run an open pair of scissors along the bar and it will cut the hair and suck it up at the same time. Don’t try and open and close the scissors just run them along slowly touching the bar - keep a firm grip and not with bars with hard beaters on them! Just brushes. Obviously 🙄
This method is not easy or fast. The roller is deeper on mine than yours making it very difficult to access. And they made it so you cannot take it apart.
My shark was a nightmare to clean too. Then I got a SEBO, which allows you to easily pop the roller out without tools to clean it. Fabulous investment! If you like upright, go for a Dart or Felix, and if you like canister, go for an E3 or D4.
Box cutter might work too.
I’ve never seen a different way to do this. If people aren’t cutting them off then I’m puzzled how else they’re doing this job
I cut and pulled on the hair and it still wouldn't come out.
I hate this job. I now wish I bought the brand vacuum which has the hair detangling technology
You say that.. but the brands that have self hair detangling technology are able to do so because they don't actually have a good brush roll, so they provide very little agitation, which is necessary to deep clean a carpet. I almost got one as you mentioned and then learned the reality and got a SEBO vacuum, which has a quick remove brush roll that doesn't require tools. Highly recommend!
@@sublimesamoyed good to know .
@@ukrena I swear by SEBO! If you have any questions feel free to ask. I don’t sell them or anything like that lol, but I am kinda passionate about the topic of vacuums lol.
@@sublimesamoyed SEBO is it a brand ?Is it expensive ?I bought my first wirelles vaccum ,it was just a cheap one but do the job although our long hair gets tangled .I remove them often .But after seen your comment i realised i dont need the anti hair wrap .dometimes we cant have everything in one .thanks for helping
The hair and fur gets too tightly wrapped to use scissors almost have to do it everytime
BIC TORCH LIGHTER WAY EASIER
Lol yah cut the BRISTLES XD ykwis *says in silly voice like gene on bobs burgers*
Man I just cleaned my vacuum after 20 minutes of disassemble it, then try it within 1 minute more hairs again 😪
Butane torch haha
Good husband. Most husbands do not want to do it, not even housekeepers. And it will cut housewive's nails. Better get tile floors and sweep them
Mine looked like Cousin it was up in there 😂
