Glad it brought back memories Lola! It was fun, for sure, but apparently two people didn't think so that gave it a thumbs down.. LOL.. What kind of moron would give a slide a thumbs down? It was a blast, and a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Used to live less than a mile from this in 1991. Been on this several times. I was 12 in 1991. Have heard SO many stories of people crashing from travelling too fast. It was cool to take the ski lift up to the top and watch all the people racing down. My friend's mom was the manager of this park on Raccon Mountain...
It was a hoot to go there for sure. One of our friends did a royal crash right over the side of it and landed way down the hill when he took a curve too fast.. He was kind of stupid though, and we knew he would never make it to the bottom without crashing. LOL. Bet you loved those years living that close.
I went on this when i was a teenager. It's called "Raccoon Mountain". Ive crashed and burned on that slide more times than i can remember. Was a cool place to hang out in the 1980's. Before they bubble wrapped the world for "Our Protection". I'd do it again if I could find one.
Thank you so much for posting this! My father used to take us to Racoon Mountain to Alpine Slide and to water slide on family trips and on church youth group trips on our way to Hiawasee River rafting. Nostalgia. It kills me that it's gone.
I sure am glad that I decided to video it all those years ago with a full sized camcorder.. Seems I am the only one to get film of it before they tore it all down, or let it be destroyed by nature. I have not found any other footage of it anywhere. I am glad you appreciate the significance of the memory!
I am sure glad I took my camcorder down it before they closed it! At least we can all see what it was like.. I should have gone down the other side of it too, just so I had both tracks on video..
I went there several times...that thing was awesome! Had a friend that crashed on it...he was road rash from head to toe...he was a Signal Mountain police officer...of course, we were all adrenaline junkies back then...I was a fireman. I actually ran over a copperhead crossing the track...I never slowed down...cut it in like 3 pieces...lol.
Sounds like a fitting end for a copperhead. One of my drivers back then had a son that launched off of the track. We never found his remains lol. He launched into the twilight zone..
Thank you so much for sharing this! For the first time I am able to show my kids what REAL fun in Chattanooga used to look like. I loved that ride, even when I watched idiots rock their slides and end up over the edges. Yeah, those were the days!
Back in my college days at UTC,we were some of the first to enjoy this place. I left a lot of hide on that slide 😂 Nothing like going over the side at top speeds in the curves. Those were the days!
You don't know how hard this was to film with full sized VHS camcorder! I was amazed I didn't crash, or have the huge camera fall off of my shoulder when I went down it. I wanted to go down it as fast as I could, so the viewers could see how it really was at speed. I don't know how I managed to make it with the balancing act, but it worked out.. Today, it would have been much easier with a cell phone.. lol.
My best friend and I spent tons of money racing each other. If you pushed down on the brake instead of pulling it up, it would put down the rollers on the track and you’d fly. We always bragged about never using the brakes lol real fun ❤️
I remember riding this as a kid in the mid 90s, I remember hearing someone at the time warn us that people had gone off track before. I always had fun with it though, haven't been out that way in years though, only lived on that area for a year or so
No problem.. I am just glad I found it! I don't know if there is any other footage on here of it in operation. A couple of it's remnants of it in ruins, but I think this is the only one on here of it as it was when it was running.. I may be wrong..
There’s one up here in NH; Gunstock Mt. resort. In the 80’s the track was cement just like this one, now it’s safer steel rods holding the cart down. Great video game music.
Hilarious though about the music. I think my family thought I was watching some kind of porno, before I quickly got the wireless earbuds going. They all turned at once said. WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING!? Haha. Great memories for sure Klark! We love TN. Saw those caverns once, never that slide though!
Especially since it was one of those gargantuan full sized VHS cameras from way back when.. It belonged to my dad, and I was afraid of dropping it on the way down the track.. Can you imagine explaining that one? Ummm Father dear, I totally trashed your expensive Camera today going down a mountainside on a plastic sled.. YOU WHAT?
I bet it was. I remember those gigantic things lol. My ex husband got beat and banged up a little on it,but our two friends got hurt pretty bad. One guy had to got to ER.
We used to have a blast on it Kathy, back when there was nothing much to do on a Saturday afternoon, we'd go ride that a couple of times.. I guess the insurance company made them tear it down.. Lots of folks went way too fast and flew off the track! Thanks for commenting.
I was sad watching your video, just as you were sad filming it. Such a great place to go to leave the city for a bit, get out in the country and have such a great time, doing something that fun! At least I thought to preserve it on film so we can still ride it on video all of these years later. My step mom said she watches this all of the time! Believe it or not, this is the top video on my channel all of the time! Way ahead of anything else!
Thank you for sharing this. I was like many and quite disappointed that it was not around for my kids to enjoy. And I know the joy of trying to video with a bulky camera. I drove around a village with an old VHS camera (the kind that recorded directly to a VHS tape) with a stick-shift car but never looking through the viewfinder. I look back now and wonder how. (/watch?v=JMwkcMjngm4 if you are curious)
Quite the trip going down there with the camera.. I had a few moments of balance trouble, but made it work. It is cool that I thought to catch this on video, I think it is the only one on youtube of the Alpine slide in operational condition. Thanks for the comment.
No doubt.. Instead of thinking, 'wow I was stupid to try to go too fast in that curve".. Nowadays it's.. "Well you shouldn't have put a curve there, I'm gonna sue you"..
I went on this slide as a teenager in the 80's. So much fun! Thanks for sharing this!!!

There is one just like this somewhere out East.. I saw a video on it just last week.. I am not sure where it is though.
I will always remeber this. If you grew up in TN this with the likes of ChattanoogaaCHooChoo, The Incline, Lake Winne. This was gold!

@@kadj1016 I absolutely do appreciate it. Thank you so much for sharing your smartly won treasure!
what good memories I recall doing this at ole Raccoon Mountain. Thanks for sharing!
My pleasure Amy!
Thanks for the video! Pretty sure thats the one my family stopped at back in the 80's. It was fun!

Great memories!! Did this there in 1996!!!
That was one of my favorite Saturday afternoon haunts for sure.. I loved that place.
Wildwood ga here. I was 11 in 87'
Wow, you lived close to it for sure.. Bet you went down it a time or two.
Thank you so much for sharing this! For the first time I am able to show my kids what REAL fun in Chattanooga used to look like. I loved that ride, even when I watched idiots rock their slides and end up over the edges. Yeah, those were the days!
One of my employees actually flew off the track one day and landed in the cudzu and sticker patch.. He was kind of a dope to begin with though.. LOL
@@kadj1016 Ha!
My husband and I rode this in 1982 on our honeymoon!
How cool. Now you can relive that anytime!

Yep, push forward let those puppies fly for sure!

Too bad it's closed now :(
It was a blast.....hated when they closed. Thanks for sharing this video ~ great memories.

What a wonderful video! So glad you shared. Cheers!
Wish I was on it now! That would be a hoot.
Thanks for sharing this.
It brought back a lot of great memories.
I'm saddened that it's no longer used.
Thanks for the comment.. Yes, I am glad I captured it on video It was kind of a hard thing to do with a huge camcorder, but I got it done.
Someone else got it on video back in 1988. They just posted it last May. They went down both sides of it. . ruclips.net/video/5DRj-Q0cM1o/видео.html

Yeah, someone did a video like this on yours once that I saw it.. Awesome!
Jazz Cat, the one at Racoon Mountain, The Alpine Slide was, is fiberglass not concrete.

KADJ that looks crazy as hell, you gotta be nuts...
Oh hell yeah I'd ride it in a NY sec . ✌🏼
It was a hoot for sure back in it's day.
Looks like it was a fun ride. I'm impressed with your ability to steer/brake and hang onto the camera!
Especially since it was one of those gargantuan full sized VHS cameras from way back when.. It belonged to my dad, and I was afraid of dropping it on the way down the track.. That is so cool!!!
That was such a fun place to go to on a Saturday afternoon, and then go to the cavern there right after riding the slide. Ah memories!
I was on it back in the 80s. I took the alternate slower safe lane.
It was hard riding with a full sized old time camcorder!
I bet it was. I remember those gigantic things lol. My ex husband got beat and banged up a little on it,but our two friends got hurt pretty bad. One guy had to got to ER.
Looks like fun 😎

Great find my friend. It was sad filming my video and seeing it in ruins

It’s a shame we can’t have stuff like this anymore because people are so quick to sue now a days
No doubt.. Instead of thinking, 'wow I was stupid to try to go too fast in that curve".. Nowadays it's.. "Well you shouldn't have put a curve there, I'm gonna sue you"..
Used to want to go back then. We never did. Its ok.
Sure wish it was still in operation.. I had so much fun on that slide.
I think they have one like it in the Smokey's near Gatlinburg. So if ya ever want to ride one, there at least is an option for you.
