I really like this song. Like this is right up my alley. But... this doesn't fit Half Life 1 at all. Especially the second part of this song (Intro III). It sounds hopeful. Uplifting. Rising power. Ethereal. Transcendent. Trancey. The instrumentation is rather contemporary and poppy. The 6 4 5 6 progression is a big reason for it sounding like this as well. Honestly, if it didn't have progression and just sat on 6 the whole time, it would be passable.
There's no reason for any of that at this stage in the game. Remember that in the original games, there was no music in the intro sections. If there is going to be music for them, it should be minimal and ominous. There is no reason for Barney to be hopeful. For all he knows it's just another day of work to him. It's only once he gets into the building that he would have any idea that things are starting to go wrong.
Half life's music has bluntly put been simple compositions and let the instruments do the talking. It almost universally doesn't use progressions like this. And if a song does, it is a 2 note progression to not give the composition too much feeling. The feeling comes from the instrumentation which is mostly industrial.
Like I said, I really like this piece. I heard it on MaxBaik's Half Life timeline video, but it just doesn't work for a Half Life 1 game. It could perhaps fit with Half Life 2, but it still would clash in certain ways. When I hear this, the breathey airiness of the synths makes me imagine a futuristic sci-fi setting. On those sweeping piano notes I see the flashes of a beautiful girl's face. A character is seeing the face of a loved one and finding the strength to rise up and fight after being knocked down. Not riding on a tram in 1998. Any of the progressions that involve 4 5 6 give that feeling of overcoming something or rising up. But it doesn't fit here. Once again, really cool piece though if it existed in a vacuum.
