I’m not sure I understand why you would crack them to see what was in them instead of candling them?

My suspicion is because it's maran eggs, the shell is very dark brown, and thick. My husband and I just finished incubating 16 Black Copper Maran chicks too (Acres of Adventures' marans are splash marans but all maran eggs are dark brown). When we candled the eggs just before lockdown (day 18), the only slight see-through was the air pocket. In the end 3 eggs didn't hatch. We're told to give extra 3 - 4 days because maran eggs have notoriously hard shell. The 3 eggs that didn't hatch for us were in 3 stages: low/no development, the white of the egg was opaque like a raw boiled egg; medium development, there's an embryo but mostly just blood red sack. The last was almost developed but for some reason stopped. The chick had all the parts, the beak, the claws, eyes, feathers, but the yolk sack hasn't been fully absorbed, like the one in this video that's cracked in the incubator.

Homesteading life is definitely not for the faint of heart, but it is a lifelong learning journey, and just like life, you have your good days and bad days. Good experiences and bad experiences. I love that you guys are not afraid to share your journey with the world.

You sure got that right. One bad bird can make everybody's life miserable. Good you got it straightened out and some chicks going.
I've got a girl running around the yard with 14 tagging along. Another one that just got her youngens off the nest this morning after sitting for almost two months. Bless her heart, she sure earned it. And hadn't been seeing many eggs lately. When checking on a third hen this morning I found them all. Girl has been getting off the nest letting everybody lay in her box. She's sitting on a mountain of eggs. Not sure how I'm gonna stop that? lol
    Chicken drama...... Gotta love it.

Never had issues with chickens, but did with my breeder cats. 1 momma would have babies & not feed them. I learned & next time bred another queen same time who raised both litters (i recooped my $$ investment & fixed the bad mom & rehomed her)

3:42 you should have one hen per nest, more than one hen in just one nest is the biggest problem, that’s why all this killing babies and crazy hens, also you should notice how they are lying eggs and make them incubate the eggs with the same time, that’s why some chicks are born with different times
