Hi just a quick question, I done a level 2 electrical installation course 6years ago in college, I am thinking of doing a level3 course now, but because it's been so long I would like to know whether I should do level 2 again or not?
I was a full time Firefighter for 30 years, I went to college at the age of 40 to do my City & Guilds to become an Electrician, I worked for free at various firms to gain knowledge rewiring houses etc etc this give me the hands on. 3 years at college. I then started my own Electrical business and never looked back, you have to give something to get experience. I was NIC qualified once I got my college City & Guild. I was never out of work once I started. I also travelled the World doing electrical work once I retired at 50, live in Thailand now and still keep my hand in. The Electrics are so bad here. I worked in Europe on workaway projects doing Electrical work accommodation and food for free, Once you have a trade the World is yours, I never looked back once qualified, working for yourself is the way to go.Now almost 60 and still enjoy the challenge of electrical work and fault finding. One of the best videos I’ve seen on how to become an Electrician. Do it, it works.
I have just been made redundant, after watching this video and reading this comment has put me more at ease. For 2 years I have hesitated as I was comfortable in my position, and it is a completely new career. Having a mate who is willing to take me under his wing, and the right direction...Hopefully in 3 years time I too can say the same things as you.
I’d say go for it, once the hard work is done you will never be out of a Job.im doing some electrical work here in Thailand next week, at a daily rate of £25 per day not the £150 per day in the U.K. but I still enjoy it. Best of luck.
I got an apprenticeship at the age of 36! Was supposed to be taking my am2 this year but covid 19 has put a spanner in the works. I worked as an overhead linesman but was sick of working away. Found the college work ok but I had forgotten a lot of my maths!i work for a firm that does mainly commercial work and I don’t feel it’s the best work to learn on. I helped out a friend rewiring his house and learnt more on that job than nearly 4 years on commercials. He allowed me to make mistakes and sort them out myself which made all the difference.
Hello there I’m 29 now an I’m wanting to go down this route, and am looking for courses to do to get into the trade quickly, as I can’t be without work for too long for financial reasons/ living cost what would you recommend I should do in regards to courses?
Im in a simialr postion 35 and looking for an aprentaship like job , looking at courses which they are asking for around 8k for the training. Would love to find a company to offer me something similar.

Good advice. I worked for a firm as a mate and went to night school. Took me a good 3 to 4 years to get to the point I wanted to be. But it’s important to remember you never stop learning in this industry.

I am 27 years old, i only just started my electrician course , I’m doing a domestic electrical installer, online via weekend practical. also just started work as a sub contractor electrician mate about a week ago, definitely want to carry on learning to become fully qualify and work in different areas. I've worked in electrical wholesaling for 7 years with 4 years as a manager and I'm doing my C&G 2365 lv 2&3. My one advantage is I have loads of product knowledge and a good understanding of the products and what works together. I'm hoping to work for one of my customers and make up for my lack of experience in installing with my commercial knowledge of the products and pricing.

My goal is to complete the 6 month course with EV/renewable training then work closely with colleagues on the side whilst I earn a decent wage to learn as much as I can. I plan on focusing on specialising on one thing at a time and taking more courses/shadow experience to specifically learn the next challenge. It seems like a somewhat never ending learning ladder, but definitely worth it. But.. we’ll see. I’ll update you in ten years to advise if I ever made a yearly 6-figure sum..
I started in 1962 at 15 with one years probation and then five years apprenticeship on an electricity board. An electrician in those days connected and did fault finding and we had wireman to do the wiring. Took me until 1972 to become approved. Some little nerk looked down his nose recently and said it was only the 13th edition regs we did. I told him in the final for a full tech we didn't take anything into the room with us and had to know the regs book by heart. Great apprenticeship though, overheads, jointing, commercial and industrial plus HV to 11kv. Even did three months with Prestcold on refrigeration. That training took me all around the world when I was younger. As an aside heat pumps came up at Prestcold all those years ago, we were told unless you had a river at the bottom of your garden forget it.
I'm leaving the forces in a couple months and am just about to do an intensive electrical course as part of my resettlement. That's what I'm worried about now, needing to find someone who will let me gain some experience with them. Daunting.
I've been working with an electrician for the last year and a half. The job is nearly all domestic and I love it. I have recently purchased the 18th edition regs and plan to do one of these intensive courses early next year. I'm 52 and this will hopefully be my last career change.
I'm an electrician at 33, and i find older (30's and 40's) people are MUCH better apprentices because most of the time they're willing to do the hard work and learn. I've had so many 20 year olds complain why they're doing the menial jobs or lifting the heavy loads. very annoying.
I’m retiring from flying and always wanted to learn the basics for a trade, been practically handy. My intention is to renovate small apartments/houses, I purchase, so I need to do the rough work and get a full qualified electrician to sign my work out. Therefore I need a basic course on wiring eg sockets, lights, trunking ie all small intensive high work load work This will not include boilers, etc, just basic trunking and rewiring homes. My advise would be as soon as you have finished diploma get on to 2391 testing and inspection course and do 18th edition companies will then take you on that's what ended up doing been working on social housing for over 1 year now on testing. And am going to start my nvq soon
I'm 50 and wanting to retrain as an electrician. It is difficult to know where to start. I can't afford a full course at the moment, so am doing some research. This video was helpful. I'm doing a PAT testing course soon as it will be useful for some projects I have, but it seems my only realistic route is to try and approach some companies to see if they will take me on as an Electrician's mate (for very low or nil wages) while I study in my spare time.
Chris I'm also 50 very soon and thinking of retraining as an electrician, same problems as yourself, it's very daunting, but no reason why we can't do it, fortunately I have many years experience doing building work/Maintenance so have worked along side electricians many times, which I think will help a lot, I would love to hear how your getting on in the months coming and any help we could pass to each other!
Must be a 50 thing... I am also on the cusp of 50 and having been interested in domestic electrics having DIY’d a few tasks at home I am looking into it. I am on the verge of booking the 18 day DEI course with TradeSkills4U. However, as I am not necessarily considering a career change at this point am unsure if this would be excessive for a keen DIYer?? I think PAT testing is a touchy one. The PAT testers we've had in testing our kit over the years, clearly just did a simple PAT testing course on how to use the machines and to class themselves as PAT testers, which apparently isn't much. You can then buy a PAT testing machine and labels and do PAT testing for companies but doesn't mean you're an electrician. Another IT engineer and I were looking into it as it seems like such a massive racket and didn't need to be an electrician. Obviously there are companies that do it who are also fully qualified electricians. Unfortunately most companies end up picking the cheapest PAT testers, they tend to be ones with only a PAT testing qualification and not a electricians one.

I did my electrical apprentice starting a few days after my fifteenth birthday in 1972 and finishing on my twenty-first birthday in 1978. I was paid 13p per hour in 1972 and I think electricians got 52p per hour. I have 14th, 15th, 16th 17th and 18th Editions qualifications. Sorry to say that I now seem to spend half my time correcting other electricians work. Of some recent memorable 'electricians' I've worked with one did not seem to known what a brass bush was. Another who did not know what a Spur does. Another connected ten telephone sockets in an office then opened the other box of ten telephone sockets and because they were not the usual make he worked with he could not connect them. Another did not know that you have to pull out the bar of some 100 amp 3P switches to turn switch off, he tried pushing the red knob on the end of the bar down while bar was still in switch. One asked the foreman for 'an easy job'. One fitted a fluorescent light over a lathe in a workshop that only had a single phase supply. I could go on and on. I think it's a sad state of affairs when 'qualified' electricians know less than an apprentice would knew in the 70's.
My apprenticeship was about 3 years with the first year one month at college then next at work and alternating, 2nd year it was about 3 months at work to 1 month college.3rd year work for a year before AM2, I used to alternate between Domestic,schools,Hospitals, industrial learning different skills on site
I took a career break at 33 last year. Did my L2 and L3 and regs. Currently working full time with a spark who is on site training while I do my nvq 3. Wish I'd done it sooner... But it's expensive.
@@lostinadventure9333 the city and guilds 2365 ( level 2 and 3) including my 18th edition was 7k. And another 2200 for my nvq3 and am2 which I'm going through now.

@@lostinadventure9333 I used trade skills 4u. Started Jan 2019 finished August 2019(L2 and L3 + regs) . I started working with a spark in the may 2019. I started my nvq3 in December and still working it.... Tbh I'm in no rush to finish it as getting as much on site experience. Every day is a learning day. But I hope to get the nvq3 finished within 6 months depending on how work is going with the current situation. Hope this helps.

Just about to finish my building regs exam week for my course, not doing an apprenticeship as I work so had to schedule it around that. It helped that I worked with an electrician when I left school so I was already ahead. Just need to get my experienced worker CSCS card and some work experience.

I'm looking into becoming an electrician (I'm 28) and was considering going to college to do my level 2 & 3. I'm glad I seen this video and realised that work experience is as valuable, if not more valuable than the qualifications themselves. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for some apprenticeships instead, or maybe look for employment as an electricians mate for now. Cheers
That's the route I went when having my career change worked as electrician mate then did the intense course to get the qualifications but learnt everything on The job just gutted I waited till I was 30 before retraining
Winner of a video, been searching for "electrician courses uk london" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Diyarah Electric Freedomify - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.
I worked as an electrician for 20 years in the early seventies through the eighties and into the early nineties. I was completely self taught and there were no laws back then that said you had to have any kind of training. I was into electronics as I was growing up so "ordinary electrics" were really simple to me. It was all about cable sizing/rating, cable length and fuse and breaker ratings. Really simple stuff. There is some skill in connecting conductors into fittings but from what I've seen over the years many electricians actually never acquire this skill. I'm from the Midlands but worked mostly in wales. Wages and the cost of materials in Wales were a lot higher than in the Midlands. A roll of cable in a little Welsh town would cost exactly twice as much as in the Midlands. So I would buy my materials in the midlands. I didn't charge welsh prices for materials or labour but I made a bit and they saved a bit. I was on £800 a week subbing for building firms but if I picked up a private job for my self such as a weekend on an extension I could easily make £800 a day and that was quite a bit cheaper than local electricians would charge. If I needed a temporary electrical supply or a final connection then I would just call MANWEB and they would come out and connect up the supply. The guys at MANWEB (usually John) would always compliment me on my neatness and the thoughtfulness and skill that I had put into my wiring and often said that they wished that MANWEB employees would do the same. It's not rocket science and many electricians on youtube such as Thomas Nagy who seem to spend all of their wages on Costa Coffee and Gregg's and just waffle on and show everyone how nice their van is just get on my nerves. We've got all this part P nonsense now and I know many electricians who quit rather than go to college to learn something they've been doing for 30 years. It's just another tax tax. I moved into plumbing/gas fitting (they're almost the same thing) as I could make more money. The trades all seem to have gone a bit silly now with yellow designer ladders and girly soft tool bags full of tools that I would never use. I retired at age 48 before all the trades went silly.
Would you reccomend plumbing/gas fitting over electric work then? Im debating on a 18month 7k cost course to get NVQ3 qualified as an electrician, currently in joinery and its a deadend in regards to making decent money.
@@BradleyCTurner There's more money in plumbing and gas fitting but gas fitting and servicing is more specialised than electrical work these days. You need to buy all the gadgets but you can make more money on a 2 hour boiler replacement than you could make in 2 days wiring a house. But it would be good to learn some electrical skills as you go. Your carpentry skills will come in handy if you do either trade as there's always floor boards to be lifted and replaced. Many sparky's and gas fitters wreck floorboards when they lift them. Of course, there's often more money to be made in industrial wiring than domestic but some electricians do both.

I’ll be leaving in 2027 after nearly 24 years service and getting myself a trade as an electrician is what I want to do. I’ve already started looking at the courses I need to do and the cost. I'm doing the second option as I'm too old for an apprenticeship it's so difficult to get one after age 18 ish so I'm doing my 2365 over 2 years will also do my 18th edition and 2391 inspection testing just struggling to get a company to give me a chance to get on with them.
David Wakely the problem I think these days is insurance, they can’t insure you if they don’t employ you, that’s the problem I had many years ago, even working for free can cause problems because of red tape. Good luck

I'm doing the level 2 C&G 2365, I emailed over 170 Electricians for free work experience, eventually found a company and am in the process of gaining some work experience.

Starting college this September on electrical level 2! Covid through a spanner in the works while I was looking for an apprenticeship, got turned down a few times due to recruitment freezes which is sad, but I do now have an interview with a company who reached out to the college and I heard about it, really want the hands on experience

Adam Hussain it all depends on your knowledge tbh in the uk I done 1 year level 1 and I stopped there for 2 years and I applied for college again and then they took English and maths tests of me I got level 2 in maths and level 1 in English and they offered me a level 2 electrical installations. My mate was a milkman for 20 years since he left school , a year ago he went on an intense 3 month training course that taught him everything about domestic electrical work including hands on work experience on various jobs , he sat all his exams and passed and became fully qualified and the company that trained him even got him a job with an electrical contractor , he now earns 3 times what he used to and is well happy , the only down side was that it cost him 7 k to do the course but he said it was worth every penny , so those out there that like to knock these fast track methods better think again because they are here to stay and seeing that there is a nationwide chronic shortage of qualified sparks due to the governments lack of getting young kids into apprentice training these fast track courses are the way forward if done through a bonafide training provider.....that's my two bobs worth anyway.......👍 Cheers Jordan

I've been assisting electricians for years and had hands on experience in all types of settings, alarms and cameras, to industrial installations. I'm very confident with the hands on work and have an understanding of the safety and regulations, I just have no idea on where to start with getting my qualifications and what options, I have to get the best type of education for me. There's never a price for any courses, so, I don't know how much I'm going to need to save up before, I make the commitment. Also time, how much time will it take me, is based off time served education or is it based off of your practical knowledge. As time is money and nobody has either lol. Love your videos man, learnt a lot from your problem finding and your order of doing things. You keep it interesting and it's great to see your thought process.
I'm going to do the intive 12 week course. I agree with needing experience I'm doing it just to do my stuff in my house. And maybe offer my weekends free to an experienced electrician. Might be able to help. Him or her out with any plbing as I am a qualified plumber no gas tho.

I was just wondering if the electricians work is hard on the body as I have turned 62 years old. Although I would love the trade after years of fairly light work, offices, cleaning, warehouse work etc.

Alright mate, I went to college as a young lad to do electrical installation, did my level 2 then found an apprenticeship for a domestic company and did it for a year. Went to uni for 3 years to study something else, then came back to another electrician job working as highway electrician mainly testing lamps etc.and did that for 2/3 years. Question I have really is I only have my EAL level 2 at the moment and 17th Edition, if I update to 18th Edition what else do I realistically need in terms of quali's just to work as a self employed electrical installer if I wanna do the work and sign it off as well? Ideally i'd like to register with NICEIC and get my ECS card renewed (I had one with old company but it ran out and can't seem to get one on my own without working for a company or having Level 3 and 18th ed), but now hearing different things about wether I need anything more than 18th edition to register with a . 5 years electrical experience in total just messed up with getting all my qualification to back it up, now gonna have to pay the price..? Thanks for the video. I'm 38 and would like a new direction in life. Im not able to do an apprenticeship as the opportunity in my are isn't great. I've looked at a few 'fast track' courses that all seem to offer similar packages for roughly £8k, including PAT testing, current edition 18th wiring, fundamental inspection @ testing, periodic inspection & testing, level 4 elect @ design, Part P followed by a level 3 NVQ (which takes an additional year). Does this sound about right for being a qualified electrician? (not experienced obviously) My current plan is to do the fast track study, then start the NVQ which requires experience, whilst taking your advice and become a sparky buddy to gain the relevant experience. I hope this enables me to be more than competent! Do the governing bodies of the certificates matter? (c&g vs others)
Same, 38 needing a career change from office environment. Degree in film and classics 2010, didnt really pursue. Thought about electrical work about 10 years ago, now I'm seriously trying to make that happen. Hopfully be an apprentice soon as there's loads of opportunities. Good luck with your journey.

Hi, just a quick question. I am a landlord been doing my own electrical work for 10yrs plus including rewiring. Now I wish to do abit of a career change to become a qualified electrician. What's the quickest way possible? I don't mind the cost involved. I want to be in the position where i can issue other landlords electrical test certificates. Thanks
A few years ago I was rewiring kitchens for a local council and the company I worked for hired a newly qualified Domestic installer to help out, the first day he said electricians don't do chasing out when on 1st fix and I had to show him how to connect a switch fused spur, so it's best to get onsite experience as well as the class room
@Artisan Electrics short and intense course have a bad rep in the industry however I think it has a lot to do with the individual also. Options 2 and 3 have the a place for the right people. However saying that option one should be the ideal option for youngsters. (Just my view) Option 2 and 3 for more mature adults(again my view) Training world is nothing like the real world. If you think you can walk out of an intense course and do a full rewire or major jobs you are mistaken. My advice to anyone would be start small with the basics. Offer work to friends and family. You’ll be surprised how difficult it can be just adding two sockets to a ring and the mess you will find in some properties. Even fitting outside lights in a property is very different to a bay simulation. You should build a portfolio from start like you would do on a course or an apprenticeship. Small jobs through to big jobs etc. Continued learning is also a must. Everyday is a school day regardless how long you have been in the industry. The day you think you know everything is the day you become unstuck. I’ve seen good and bad work by people who have done option 1, 2 and 3.
what would be advice to get appropriate certifications for foreign people living in UK? who are experienced and already spend years at school/ apprenticeship in EU countries and just need the certificates. the best way maybe easiest fastest way . I personally went through wiring regulations 17th edition course before and applied for ecs card but as i couldn't prove nvq level 3 just received ancillary operative card which expired recently. thank you
I'm currently doing an online electricians course, (At the age of 29) been doing so for around 6 months now, out of 2 years. I'm terrified of actually qualifying because I don't feel like I'm learning as well as I would be if I were doing practical(As this is the best way I learn). I'd love to be able to do an apprenticeship. But, I just couldn't live on that kind of money.

Ive passed my 18th regs exam and i'm now considering joining the NIC to become a Domestic installer. Philot sopher in theory yes but it will take a lot of hard work and persuasion to get there but if you’re determined and work to a high standard I’m sure you will succeed!
I've already got experience with installation work but my plan is to do the C&G at a training provider and then work as a mate for a couple of years to get the experience that i would have gotten as a proper apprentice. Of course you can still take on more simple jobs privately. I nice and gently clicked the 'like' button with my mouse.
What if I don't want to become an apprentice but do want to learn some basic 12v electrical to kit out my van? Seems like there is nothing between a 4 year program and DIY.
im 19 left college 7 months ago have my level 2 and 3 c&g and have only had about a month on sight experience since was really hard finding someone to work with now the guy i was working with doesnt want to work with me anymore any tips on what to do next i want to get my nvq but struggling to find a company to do it with any help or advice will be appreciated

I'm finding it so cinfusing which courses I need to do though to get started. I'm aware there are centers you can go to that offer "crash courses" in like 6 weeks... but I'd rather remain in work and learn part time. Any advice on courses would be much appreciated.
It’s very hard to find a good course I can’t speak much because I haven’t been on one of those types but I know it can be a challenge to find a good provider

I currently work in a factory in the UK i have seen package deals online to acquire my NVQ level 3 within 18-24 months is this possible or will i inevitably need to take time out of work to complete the course essentialy being jobless in the meantime

What course would you recommend as there is loads online including your course or should I go back to college and do the course there. I’m highly qualified with a first class degree in mathematics but I can’t stand office work and I’ve always thought about becoming an electrician due to the practical side, science and job satisfaction. I'm changing careers hopefully to become an electrician and have tried to do free work experience with about 20 or so companies and not one has got back to me, or if they have it's never gone any further than 1 email. I was a full time Firefighter for 30 years, I went to college at the age of 40 to do my City & Guilds to become an Electrician, I worked for free at various firms to gain knowledge rewiring houses etc etc this give me the hands on. 3 years at college. I then started my own Electrical business and never looked back, you have to give something to get experience. I was NIC qualified once I got my college City & Guild. I was never out of work once I started. I also travelled the World doing electrical work once I retired at 50, live in Thailand now and still keep my hand in. The Electrics are so bad here. I worked in Europe on workaway projects doing Electrical work accommodation and food for free, Once you have a trade the World is yours, I never looked back once qualified, working for yourself is the way to go.Now almost 60 and still enjoy the challenge of electrical work and fault finding.

I have just been made redundant, after watching this video and reading this comment has put me more at ease. For 2 years I have hesitated as I was comfortable in my position, and it is a completely new career. Having a mate who is willing to take me under his wing, and the right direction...Hopefully in 3 years time I too can say the same things as you.

I’d say go for it, once the hard work is done you will never be out of a Job.im doing some electrical work here in Thailand next week, at a daily rate of £25 per day not the £150 per day in the U.K. but I still enjoy it.

I got an apprenticeship at the age of 36! Was supposed to be taking my am2 this year but covid 19 has put a spanner in the works. I worked as an overhead linesman but was sick of working away. Found the college work ok but I had forgotten a lot of my maths!i work for a firm that does mainly commercial work and I don’t feel it’s the best work to learn on. I helped out a friend rewiring his house and learnt more on that job than nearly 4 years on commercials. He allowed me to make mistakes and sort them out myself which made all the difference.

Good advice. I worked for a firm as a mate and went to night school. Took me a good 3 to 4 years to get to the point I wanted to be.

I've worked in electrical wholesaling for 7 years with 4 years as a manager and I'm doing my C&G 2365 lv 2&3. My one advantage is I have loads of product knowledge and a good understanding of the products and what works together. I'm hoping to work for one of my customers and make up for my lack of experience in installing with my commercial knowledge of the products and pricing.

My goal is to complete the 6 month course with EV/renewable training then work closely with colleagues on the side whilst I earn a decent wage to learn as much as I can. I plan on focusing on specialising on one thing at a time and taking more courses/shadow experience to specifically learn the next challenge. It seems like a somewhat never ending learning ladder, but definitely worth it.
But.. we’ll see. I’ll update you in ten years to advise if I ever made a yearly 6-figure sum..

I started in 1962 at 15 with one years probation and then five years apprenticeship on an electricity board. An electrician in those days connected and did fault finding and we had wireman to do the wiring. Took me until 1972 to become approved. Some little nerk looked down his nose recently and said it was only the 13th edition regs we did. I told him in the final for a full tech we didn't take anything into the room with us and had to know the regs book by heart. Great apprenticeship though, overheads, jointing, commercial and industrial plus HV to 11kv. Even did three months with Prestcold on refrigeration. That training took me all around the world when I was younger.
As an aside heat pumps came up at Prestcold all those years ago, we were told unless you had a river at the bottom of your garden forget it.
I'm leaving the forces in a couple months and am just about to do an intensive electrical course as part of my resettlement. That's what I'm worried about now, needing to find someone who will let me gain some experience with them. Daunting.
I've been working with an electrician for the last year and a half. The job is nearly all domestic and I love it. I have recently purchased the 18th edition regs and plan to do one of these intensive courses early next year. I'm 52 and this will hopefully be my last career change.

I'm an electrician at 33, and i find older (30's and 40's) people are MUCH better apprentices because most of the time they're willing to do the hard work and learn. I've had so many 20 year olds complain why they're doing the menial jobs or lifting the heavy loads. very annoying.

I’m retiring from flying and always wanted to learn the basics for a trade, been practically handy.
My intention is to renovate small apartments/houses, I purchase, so I need to do the rough work and get a full qualified electrician to sign my work out. Therefore I need a basic course on wiring eg sockets, lights, trunking ie all small intensive high work load work

That's what I'm worried about, I just started college but I don't want to end up with 3 years of useless diploma.
My advise would be as soon as you have finished diploma get on to 2391 testing and inspection course and do 18th edition companies will then take you on that's what ended up doing been working on social housing for over 1 year now on testing. And am going to start my nvq soon
I'm 50 and wanting to retrain as an electrician. It is difficult to know where to start. I can't afford a full course at the moment, so am doing some research. This video was helpful. I'm doing a PAT testing course soon as it will be useful for some projects I have, but it seems my only realistic route is to try and approach some companies to see if they will take me on as an Electrician's mate (for very low or nil wages) while I study in my spare time.
Chris I'm also 50 very soon and thinking of retraining as an electrician, same problems as yourself, it's very daunting, but no reason why we can't do it, fortunately I have many years experience doing building work/Maintenance so have worked along side electricians many times, which I think will help a lot, I would love to hear how your getting on in the months coming and any help we could pass to each other!
Must be a 50 thing... I am also on the cusp of 50 and having been interested in domestic electrics having DIY’d a few tasks at home I am looking into it. I am on the verge of booking the 18 day DEI course with TradeSkills4U. However, as I am not necessarily considering a career change at this point am unsure if this would be excessive for a keen DIYer?? I think PAT testing is a touchy one. The PAT testers we've had in testing our kit over the years, clearly just did a simple PAT testing course on how to use the machines and to class themselves as PAT testers, which apparently isn't much. You can then buy a PAT testing machine and labels and do PAT testing for companies but doesn't mean you're an electrician. Another IT engineer and I were looking into it as it seems like such a massive racket and didn't need to be an electrician. Obviously there are companies that do it who are also fully qualified electricians. Unfortunately most companies end up picking the cheapest PAT testers, they tend to be ones with only a PAT testing qualification and not a electricians one.

I did my electrical apprentice starting a few days after my fifteenth birthday in 1972 and finishing on my twenty-first birthday in 1978. I was paid 13p per hour in 1972 and I think electricians got 52p per hour. I have 14th, 15th, 16th 17th and 18th Editions qualifications. Sorry to say that I now seem to spend half my time correcting other electricians work. Of some recent memorable 'electricians' I've worked with one did not seem to known what a brass bush was. Another who did not know what a Spur does. Another connected ten telephone sockets in an office then opened the other box of ten telephone sockets and because they were not the usual make he worked with he could not connect them. Another did not know that you have to pull out the bar of some 100 amp 3P switches to turn switch off, he tried pushing the red knob on the end of the bar down while bar was still in switch. One asked the foreman for 'an easy job'. One fitted a fluorescent light over a lathe in a workshop that only had a single phase supply. I could go on and on. I think it's a sad state of affairs when 'qualified' electricians know less than an apprentice would knew in the 70's.

My apprenticeship was about 3 years with the first year one month at college then next at work and alternating, 2nd year it was about 3 months at work to 1 month college.3rd year work for a year before AM2, I used to alternate between Domestic,schools,Hospitals, industrial learning different skills on site

I took a career break at 33 last year. Did my L2 and L3 and regs. Currently working full time with a spark who is on site training while I do my nvq 3. Wish I'd done it sooner... But it's expensive.

@@lostinadventure9333 I used trade skills 4u. Started Jan 2019 finished August 2019(L2 and L3 + regs) . I started working with a spark in the may 2019. I started my nvq3 in December and still working it.... Tbh I'm in no rush to finish it as getting as much on site experience. Every day is a learning day. But I hope to get the nvq3 finished within 6 months depending on how work is going with the current situation. Hope this helps.

Just about to finish my building regs exam week for my course, not doing an apprenticeship as I work so had to schedule it around that. It helped that I worked with an electrician when I left school so I was already ahead. Just need to get my experienced worker CSCS card and some work experience.

I'm looking into becoming an electrician (I'm 28) and was considering going to college to do my level 2 & 3. I'm glad I seen this video and realised that work experience is as valuable, if not more valuable than the qualifications themselves. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for some apprenticeships instead, or maybe look for employment as an electricians mate for now.

Winner of a video, been searching for "electrician courses uk london" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Diyarah Electric Freedomify - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.
I worked as an electrician for 20 years in the early seventies through the eighties and into the early nineties. I was completely self taught and there were no laws back then that said you had to have any kind of training. I was into electronics as I was growing up so "ordinary electrics" were really simple to me. It was all about cable sizing/rating, cable length and fuse and breaker ratings. Really simple stuff. There is some skill in connecting conductors into fittings but from what I've seen over the years many electricians actually never acquire this skill. I'm from the Midlands but worked mostly in wales. Wages and the cost of materials in Wales were a lot higher than in the Midlands. A roll of cable in a little Welsh town would cost exactly twice as much as in the Midlands. So I would buy my materials in the midlands. I didn't charge welsh prices for materials or labour but I made a bit and they saved a bit. I was on £800 a week subbing for building firms but if I picked up a private job for my self such as a weekend on an extension I could easily make £800 a day and that was quite a bit cheaper than local electricians would charge. If I needed a temporary electrical supply or a final connection then I would just call MANWEB and they would come out and connect up the supply. The guys at MANWEB (usually John) would always compliment me on my neatness and the thoughtfulness and skill that I had put into my wiring and often said that they wished that MANWEB employees would do the same. It's not rocket science and many electricians on youtube such as Thomas Nagy who seem to spend all of their wages on Costa Coffee and Gregg's and just waffle on and show everyone how nice their van is just get on my nerves. We've got all this part P nonsense now and I know many electricians who quit rather than go to college to learn something they've been doing for 30 years. It's just another tax tax. I moved into plumbing/gas fitting (they're almost the same thing) as I could make more money. The trades all seem to have gone a bit silly now with yellow designer ladders and girly soft tool bags full of tools that I would never use. I retired at age 48 before all the trades went silly.
Would you reccomend plumbing/gas fitting over electric work then? Im debating on a 18month 7k cost course to get NVQ3 qualified as an electrician, currently in joinery and its a deadend in regards to making decent money.
@@BradleyCTurner There's more money in plumbing and gas fitting but gas fitting and servicing is more specialised than electrical work these days. You need to buy all the gadgets but you can make more money on a 2 hour boiler replacement than you could make in 2 days wiring a house. But it would be good to learn some electrical skills as you go. Your carpentry skills will come in handy if you do either trade as there's always floor boards to be lifted and replaced. Many sparky's and gas fitters wreck floorboards when they lift them. Of course, there's often more money to be made in industrial wiring than domestic but some electricians do both.

Can you not learn electrics in the Army? I'm just trying to start out as an electrician too but my grandad was trained in electronics by the RAF?
@@kier1568 Yes you can learn it in the Army but it’s not my trade. Look at something like the Royal Engineers for trades like Electrician.

I'm doing the second option as I'm too old for an apprenticeship it's so difficult to get one after age 18 ish so I'm doing my 2365 over 2 years will also do my 18th edition and 2391 inspection testing just struggling to get a company to give me a chance to get on with them.
David Wakely the problem I think these days is insurance, they can’t insure you if they don’t employ you, that’s the problem I had many years ago, even working for free can cause problems because of red tape. Good luck

Adam Hussain it all depends on your knowledge tbh in the uk I done 1 year level 1 and I stopped there for 2 years and I applied for college again and then they took English and maths tests of me I got level 2 in maths and level 1 in English and they offered me a level 2 electrical installations. My mate was a milkman for 20 years since he left school , a year ago he went on an intense 3 month training course that taught him everything about domestic electrical work including hands on work experience on various jobs , he sat all his exams and passed and became fully qualified and the company that trained him even got him a job with an electrical contractor , he now earns 3 times what he used to and is well happy , the only down side was that it cost him 7 k to do the course but he said it was worth every penny , so those out there that like to knock these fast track methods better think again because they are here to stay and seeing that there is a nationwide chronic shortage of qualified sparks due to the governments lack of getting young kids into apprentice training these fast track courses are the way forward if done through a bonafide training provider.....that's my two bobs worth anyway.......👍

I've been assisting electricians for years and had hands on experience in all types of settings, alarms and cameras, to industrial installations. I'm very confident with the hands on work and have an understanding of the safety and regulations, I just have no idea on where to start with getting my qualifications and what options, I have to get the best type of education for me. There's never a price for any courses, so, I don't know how much I'm going to need to save up before, I make the commitment. Also time, how much time will it take me, is based off time served education or is it based off of your practical knowledge. As time is money and nobody has either lol. Love your videos man, learnt a lot from your problem finding and your order of doing things. You keep it interesting and it's great to see your thought process.

I'm going to do the intive 12 week course. I agree with needing experience I'm doing it just to do my stuff in my house. And maybe offer my weekends free to an experienced electrician. Might be able to help. Him or her out with any plbing as I am a qualified plumber no gas tho.

I was just wondering if the electricians work is hard on the body as I have turned 62 years old. Although I would love the trade after years of fairly light work, offices, cleaning, warehouse work etc.

Alright mate, I went to college as a young lad to do electrical installation, did my level 2 then found an apprenticeship for a domestic company and did it for a year. Went to uni for 3 years to study something else, then came back to another electrician job working as highway electrician mainly testing lamps etc.and did that for 2/3 years.
Question I have really is I only have my EAL level 2 at the moment and 17th Edition, if I update to 18th Edition what else do I realistically need in terms of quali's just to work as a self employed electrical installer if I wanna do the work and sign it off as well? Ideally i'd like to register with NICEIC and get my ECS card renewed (I had one with old company but it ran out and can't seem to get one on my own without working for a company or having Level 3 and 18th ed), but now hearing different things about wether I need anything more than 18th edition to register with a . 5 years electrical experience in total just messed up with getting all my qualification to back it up, now gonna have to pay the price..?

Thanks for the video. I'm 38 and would like a new direction in life. Im not able to do an apprenticeship as the opportunity in my are isn't great. I've looked at a few 'fast track' courses that all seem to offer similar packages for roughly £8k, including PAT testing, current edition 18th wiring, fundamental inspection @ testing, periodic inspection & testing, level 4 elect @ design, Part P followed by a level 3 NVQ (which takes an additional year). Does this sound about right for being a qualified electrician? (not experienced obviously)
My current plan is to do the fast track study, then start the NVQ which requires experience, whilst taking your advice and become a sparky buddy to gain the relevant experience. I hope this enables me to be more than competent!

Same, 38 needing a career change from office environment. Degree in film and classics 2010, didnt really pursue. Thought about electrical work about 10 years ago, now I'm seriously trying to make that happen. Hopfully be an apprentice soon as there's loads of opportunities. Good luck with your journey.

Hi, just a quick question. I am a landlord been doing my own electrical work for 10yrs plus including rewiring. Now I wish to do abit of a career change to become a qualified electrician. A few years ago I was rewiring kitchens for a local council and the company I worked for hired a newly qualified Domestic installer to help out, the first day he said electricians don't do chasing out when on 1st fix and I had to show him how to connect a switch fused spur, so it's best to get onsite experience as well as the class room

@Artisan Electrics short and intense course have a bad rep in the industry however I think it has a lot to do with the individual also.
Options 2 and 3 have the a place for the right people. However saying that option one should be the ideal option for youngsters. (Just my view)
Option 2 and 3 for more mature adults(again my view)
Training world is nothing like the real world.
If you think you can walk out of an intense course and do a full rewire or major jobs you are mistaken.
My advice to anyone would be start small with the basics. Offer work to friends and family.
You’ll be surprised how difficult it can be just adding two sockets to a ring and the mess you will find in some properties. Even fitting outside lights in a property is very different to a bay simulation.
You should build a portfolio from start like you would do on a course or an apprenticeship. Small jobs through to big jobs etc.
Continued learning is also a must.
Everyday is a school day regardless how long you have been in the industry. The day you think you know everything is the day you become unstuck.
I’ve seen good and bad work by people who have done option 1, 2 and 3.

what would be advice to get appropriate certifications for foreign people living in UK? who are experienced and already spend years at school/ apprenticeship in EU countries and just need the certificates. the best way maybe easiest fastest way . I personally went through wiring regulations 17th edition course before and applied for ecs card but as i couldn't prove nvq level 3 just received ancillary operative card which expired recently. thank you

I'm currently doing an online electricians course, (At the age of 29) been doing so for around 6 months now, out of 2 years. I'm terrified of actually qualifying because I don't feel like I'm learning as well as I would be if I were doing practical(As this is the best way I learn). I'd love to be able to do an apprenticeship. But, I just couldn't live on that kind of money.

Ive passed my 18th regs exam and i'm now considering joining the NIC to become a Domestic installer. Hi I am going to start night school and do my city and guilds level 2 and the hopefully move on to the level 3. Then I want to do my 18th edition and complete my inspection and testing. I will try and get some hand on experience. Will this enable me to do small jobs on my own or will I need to create a portfolio and get my gold card?

Philot sopher in theory yes but it will take a lot of hard work and persuasion to get there but if you’re determined and work to a high standard I’m sure you will succeed!

Yeah it’s a good trade and good pay however it’s hard to get there, however you will always have that qualification to fall back on
I've already got experience with installation work but my plan is to do the C&G at a training provider and then work as a mate for a couple of years to get the experience that i would have gotten as a proper apprentice. Of course you can still take on more simple jobs privately.

im 19 left college 7 months ago have my level 2 and 3 c&g and have only had about a month on sight experience since was really hard finding someone to work with now the guy i was working with doesnt want to work with me anymore any tips on what to do next i want to get my nvq but struggling to find a company to do it with any help or advice will be appreciated

How long does it take to be qualified via apprenticeship?
I'm currently looking for a career change to an electrician. I want to go the night school route with working a day a week for free for experience. I'm finding it so cinfusing which courses I need to do though to get started. I'm aware there are centers you can go to that offer "crash courses" in like 6 weeks... but I'd rather remain in work and learn part time. Any advice on courses would be much appreciated.
It’s very hard to find a good course I can’t speak much because I haven’t been on one of those types but I know it can be a challenge to find a good provider

What is the course called which provides night schools
I currently work in a factory in the UK i have seen package deals online to acquire my NVQ level 3 within 18-24 months is this possible or will i inevitably need to take time out of work to complete the course essentialy being jobless in the meantime

I'm changing careers hopefully to become an electrician and have tried to do free work experience with about 20 or so companies and not one has got back to me, or if they have it's never gone any further than 1 email. I'm guessing it's just a case of them not wanting me to be a hindrance (which I understand) do you think? Or maybe I'm doing something wrong!😂
